It is important to follow good signs in life. A missed one can create a detour and even disaster. Learning to follow signs may lead to effective leadership and healthy relationships. It is especially important to pay attention to the signs God gives us in life. A good sign gets our attention. A good sign gives clear direction. A good sign expands knowledge. The signs help us know that God will do anything to communicate His love to us. Jesus’ words about being the bread, the light, the door, the shepherd, the resurrection, the way/truth/life, and the vine are nice but it’s not the thing: those words are the promise of everything. Jesus doesn’t want to be engaged to you; He wants to be married to you. The ring isn’t the thing but it opens up everything. When I see myself as in Him, grafted into Him, chosen by Him, nourished by Him, and empowered by Him, I begin to see He is the daily bread I need to sustain and manage the hunger of my heart: for deep down, I want more than this world can give. Sermon published May 10, 2020. Jesus’ words are more than code for a plan of salvation. We must not cheapen Jesus and His rich gospel with less than a careful reading, diligent study, and good thinking. Jesus deserves our best effort, focus and devotion.What direction do we go to get somewhere? Depends on where we are. Until we know where we are, we’ll never know how to get anywhere. The direction we take is a guess unless we know our position.No matter where we live, we have very limited time. We will be going somewhere else one day, and we want to see Jesus coming to get us. When our hearts are troubled and tossed, believe and look. Jesus is coming. Which direction do we go? A sheep chooses to follow the shepherd’s voice. They are not naturally inclined; they must be taught. We become what we choose, and our choices shape our future. We long for satisfaction. We long for freedom. We long for acceptance. Jesus is the door to experience that life and experience it abundantly. We can’t experience Jesus if we don’t take the first step of faith. All of Jesus’ parables contained various levels of communication. The parables were simple stories using concrete language to reveal transcendent realities, values and truths. These everyday stories projected significant messages. Jesus is always the best answer for facing the challenges of our lives. Jesus didn’t come to condemn us for our flaws; He came to redeem us from our flaws and restore us to His purpose. Second chances come naturally to those who make sacrificial choices.Nothing else in the world can give us what Jesus can give. He gives us the joy of knowing our feet are solidly rooted in reality, and He gives direction and purpose for living. Jesus’ light affects how we see: we gain clarity and focus. Jesus’ light affects how we live: we grow in morality and understanding. Jesus’ light affects what we believe: we experience reality and accountability. You don’t have to believe Jesus blindly. Examine Him. Check Him out. Jesus doesn’t want us to believe in Him simply because we were told to. Or to think that reciting and memorizing a creed is all there is. Or that a fact can cleanse your soul. Jesus is better than that. He’s more real than that. He doesn’t want to tell us about life; He wants to give us life — His life. Because Jesus is alive, He can make us alive through Him. This is the abundant life that Jesus promises. Jesus wants us to experience resurrection. When we take that step of faith, we find out that we can indeed experience resurrection. We can cross over from death to life. From darkness to light. From fear to faith. From defeat to victory. He wants us to experience His resurrection by opening our eyes to see more than we can see, to know more than we can know, and to experience more than we can experience. He wants us to see and know that He is enough. Jesus is determined to transform our motivations. He does so by clarifying, cleansing, and changing those motivations. What is it that we expect from Jesus? Do we want what He can offer us? What He can do for us? Or, do we long to know Him, to experience Him, and to see Him as the ultimate gift.What we pursue either satisfies or starves our souls. Jesus came to create an appetite for the things of God: the things that last, the things that give meaning to life, and the things that satisfy our souls. God always relates to His people out of a heart of love, for He is love. Because God is love; He is loving in all He does. He defines what love is: love seeks, calls, identifies with, comforts, defeats death, redeems, renews, and restores. God is love, and He made a love story with His people. He is calling you to be a part of this grand story of the new heaven and new earth. God is completing His story by removing all of the things He never intended His creation to face: sin, disease, destruction, and death. How? Sermon released on March 22, 2020. Throughout history, God’s people have resisted the advance of God’s mission. God’s people profess to want to be with God and His mission, and yet they resist where His mission takes them. The change God calls us to make is the change we need to make. God’s mission starts by transforming the inner person so that they can change the world in which they live. God is sending His people out to love those in the world around them. Every interaction with someone is an opportunity to love, serve, and show hospitality. Fixing a broken relationship is not easy work. Worse than those breaks and distances is the fact that most are willing to live them, to think that is just the way life is. God created the world according to His design and made humans in His image with the capacity and power to choose. God's goal was to create a world that is empowered by the exchange of His love and reflects the glory of His overcoming love and forgiveness. God's love is greater than our failures and His forgiveness greater than our sins. As God’s highest creation, humanity was not created whimsically but purposefully. We are not an afterthought to God’s plan- we are imprinted with His very nature. We are called into His love story for creation, and created to reflect the artistry and love the Creator. The search for meaning in life begins and ends with God. But how do we know God exists? We know through revelation: the revelation of who God is through creation, history, culture, the person of Jesus, and the written Word of God. We don’t just know truth in theory; we experience these truths daily in our lives whether we are aware or not. It’s only when our hunger is activated for the Living God do we experience His presence in our lives. How do we get to know God? We read His word. For it is in the reading of the Word that the way to Jesus is revealed, the truth is illuminated, and knowledge of the Holy Spirit is imparted. Our hunger for God fuels our experience of God and His Word.
