Stephanie sits down with Pam Farrel to discuss a harrowing yet faith-affirming journey through unexpected medical emergencies, profound spiritual experiences in Christ, and the indomitable power of joy. Pam's story is not just one of survival but of thriving through adversity, guided by God's presence, Pam's steadfast faith, and the prayers of many. Heaven's Glimpse and Joy's Power During a medical emergency, Pam felt God's peace envelop her as she transitioned into a medically induced coma. In this state of near-death, she was ushered into heaven, welcomed by angels of various ethnicities, and enveloped in a sacred dance above the gates of glory. Experiencing deep peace and engaging in a mental conversation with God, she saw visions of her loved ones benefiting from her prayers. Her profound spiritual encounter with Christ reaffirmed her mission on earth and underscored the miraculous elements of her faith journey. A Family Visit Turned Medical Emergency What started as a joyful family gathering in Salt Lake City for Mother's Day turned into a harrowing experience for Pam Farrel. In the middle of the night, severe pain led Pam to the emergency room.. The diagnosis was clear: the chilling reality of stage 1 ovarian cancer. Always seeing the bright side of her circumstances, Pam reminds us of the blessing that pain can be, in the crucial role pain played in alerting her to the severity of her condition. Pain allowed for an early diagnosis that is rare with ovarian cancer, which is often not detected until it reaches stage 4. Pam was transferred to a main hospital where a divine coincidence awaited—a Christian oncologist familiar with her book, "Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti." Pam's journey through six rounds of chemotherapy three weeks apart, her struggle with hair loss, and her graceful acceptance of these side effects paint a portrait of resilience. Throughout, Pam continued to contribute to her ministry and even received a Life Impact Award at the Golden Scrolls. Rebuilding and Cultivating Joy Pam's recovery period with her son's family demonstrated the importance of a supportive community. Despite undergoing rigorous treatments, Pam persisted in her work, mentoring others, and presenting at conferences. She emphasizes the key importance of joy, especially during adversity. Pam shares her methods for cultivating joy, including: ·         Proactive Joy : Create a list of simple, joy-inducing activities and commit to one daily. ·         Reflective Joy : Maintain a gratitude journal to note everyday blessings. ·         Rejoice in the Lord : See joy as a proactive choice, focusing on calming actions during stressful times. ·         Creative Joy : Engage in creative activities like Bible art doodling to shift focus away from problems. ·         Interactive Joy : Use joy to enhance relationships, making interactions more positive. We spend about 200 days per year traveling to conferences for men, women and couples. We meet fascinating people, eat at interesting places and experience every climate imaginable. And, when we are home, we live on a boat in Southern California. Through our videos and blogs, we would like to take you with us." Bill and Pam are prolific conference and church communicators. They speak together at marriage and parenting conferences with a unique ability to “speak as one” in all their presentations. Bill helps people gain strength and real-world wisdom through messages at men's retreats and church services. Pam equips and encourages women to be courageous, influential and strong in faith at women's gatherings around the world. With seamless transitions, natural timing and contagious energy, Bill and Pam inspire audiences around the world to live better, laugh often and love skillfully. It has often been said, “More is caught than taught,” and this is the secret to Bill and Pam's effectiveness. They are a real couple helping real couples. As couples watch Bill and Pam present, they see a couple in action, experience the kind of support that builds trust in relationships and can visualize their own success. Bill and Pam don't just teach about marriage, they demonstrate it for their audiences. People who hear them speak say: “They made it simple to be in love again.” “After hearing them, I know what to do next!” “I was nervous about coming because I thought I would hear about what I was doing wrong but boy am I glad I came.” “This was awesome.” “They didn't just tell us what to do, they showed us how.” “We rediscovered each other this weekend.” “We haven't laughed together this much in years.” Find Pam and Bill at https://www.love-wise.com/  Receive Pam's Infectious Joy 30 day e-book by subscribing to her newsletter here: https://mailchi.mp/love-wise.com/infectiousjoy    We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. In his book, Surprised by Joy, C.S. Lewis writes, “From my earliest years I was aware of the vivid contrast between my mother's cheerful and tranquil affection and the ups and downs of my father's emotional life.” He went on to say, “My father, whom I implicitly believed, represented adult life as one of incessant drudgery under continual threat of financial ruin.” Lewis got his emotional cues from his parents. And so did we in ways we may not have even been aware of. What are we projecting to others about the Christian life—whether it's our children, neighbors, friends, or colleagues? What place should joy hold in the Christian life? The answer may…surprise you.

Merry Christmas everyone! On this glorious Christmas Day we are sharing Nicole's Christmas message from last year on Mary and the visitation from Gabriel. Whether you are cleaning up wrapping paper, making a Christmas feast, or quietly taking in the day, let's ponder the miracle of Jesus' birth and the awe Mary experienced together.  WHAT DOES IT SAY? Luke 1 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. WHAT'S THE BACKSTORY? What do we know about Mary: -she knew some scripture-she was faithful-she was among the believers [not venerated, but in community] Acts 1:14  14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus. Mary had no qualifications for being chosen. This beginning also mirrors our beginning when it comes to receiving the good news. All of the good news is contained here: You who are highly favored. In the context of the world, she is not highly favored. When we think of what makes someone highly favored, we tend to think of the examples we have in the world. But that wasn't Mary at all.  You have found favor with God. [favor=charis=grace] -Not dependent on anything that she (or us) can do. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers. (Deuteronomy 7:6–8) What was given through the Israelites is now passed to everyone: Galatians 3:14 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. The Lord is with you.  Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).  You aren't alone. You aren't isolated. God knows you. *Emmanuel But God with us, as in He comes to live inside us, giving us strength in place of weakness, courage in place of fear, and vibrant life in all those dark places that once felt dead. – Jennifer Slattery The power of being “with”. When people are hurting, we want to be with them. Waiting in hospital rooms. [Brantley/AJ] She receives two promises: highly favored, Lord with you. Crazy surprise – 38 “I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Basil Pennington: “my self-worth my value depends on what I have, what I can do, and what others think of me” My false self protects me with: I am what I do.I am what I have.I am what others think of me. My true self: I am. (I am worthy)I am the Lord's. (I belong)I am the Lord's servant. (I have purpose) Living in our true self is about a radical acceptance of who we are, based on what God has decided. “Some Christians base their identity on being a sinner. I think they have it wrong—or only half right. You are not simply a sinner; you are a deeply loved sinner.”  David Benner Accepting the incredible surprise of the good news means releasing control. Receiving the gift of our favor is the ability to open our hands to everything God gives, “I am the Lord's servant, may your word be fulfilled.” Radical acceptance unlocks the joy of surprise. surprise-find-shift-change WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? What sets Mary apart is her radical acceptance to God's invitation, and what defines us as children of God is our radical acceptance to the same invitation. Radical Acceptance: God has not given up on me, no matter how I feel. I do not need to try harder. My pain and struggle is not wasted. My false self protects me with: I am what I do.I am what I have.I am what others think of me. My true self: I am. (I am worthy)I am the Lord's. (I belong)I am the Lord's servant. After a courageous, tireless battle, Sharon "Snoopy" Fong left us on July 1, 2023. This Two Kens episode is the twenty-seventh time Ken Fong and Ken Kemp have come together for a podcast conversation - this time, it's a somber, solemn occasion.  It's a moment of reflection - filled with both grief and gratitude. Today's title comes from C.S. Lewis, the British literary critic, and scholar who was also known as an Anglican theologian. His writings have influenced many generations of faith seekers, including ours. Professor Lewis was known as a committed bachelor, but he married later in life. When Joy Grisham began corresponding with the stuffy Oxford don, he was smitten - "surprised by joy (Joy)" as he put it. As their romance blossomed, Joy Grisham was unexpectedly diagnosed with a cancer that took her life, all too soon. Lewis' shared his written reflections. His honesty and candor stunned many of his Christian readers because he openly expressed tidal waves of doubt, even anger that his "good" God could possibly have allowed this tragic, premature end to his beautiful awakening to married love. He wrote "A Grief Observed," which it was. Ken Fong lines up with C.S. Lewis in his willingness to share the journey openly - a journey filled with laughter and tears. The two Kens come together for a personal reflection on life and love - and the extraordinary woman who came into Ken Fong's life more than forty years ago: Sharon Snoopy Fong.
