Sorry, but I have to say it...We are optimizing our way to boredom.Measure everything, test every variation, and optimize the customer journey until it's "perfect". That seems to be the mantra of modern business today. But in this first episode of 2026, our guest Kendra Shimmell throws a big wrench in this machinery.Kendra argues that while things like A/B testing validate what works right now, they often come at a steep cost. Because if we rely solely on reacting to quantitative data to make small, incremental improvements, we eventually, you guessed it, optimize our way to mediocrity and boredom. We lose the soul in our services.Kendra shares a painful example of this phenomenon in action: social media algorithms. You click on a cool backpack once, and the system thinks it has you figured out. Suddenly, your entire feed is just backpacks. A lot of backpacks. The algorithm is "optimized," sure. But it has stripped away all the serendipity, turning a place of discovery into a repetitive, boring experience. As Kendra put it, just because you can keep a user clicking doesn't mean you aren't exhausting them. So, the question is: Why do organizations default to this? Why are we so focused on squeezing out efficiency rather than exploring new avenues? When I asked Kendra, her answer was blunt: "Greed, Fear, and Confusion." Ouch. The greed to squeeze out the last 1% of revenue. The fear that if they try something new, they won't find product-market fit again. And the confusion that comes from ignoring the fact that humans are wildly irrational beings driven by feelings, not spreadsheets. This conversation is a wake-up call to stop treating our customers like subjects in a scientific experiment and start treating them as people to co-create with. And if your organization isn't ready to hear that? Well, Kendra has some advice on how to be a little "sneaky" to get the work done anyway! The conversation ends with a question that pairs perfectly with a long walk, somewhere where you can let a little serendipity back into your day: "When, where, and how is it most important to be human?".Happy New Year and keep making a positive impact!Be well, ~ Marc--- [ 1. Are we living in the Matrix? Rizwan Virk—an MIT computer scientist, leading video game pioneer, entrepreneur, film producer, venture capitalist, professor, and a founder of Play Labs @ MIT—is a leading authority on simulation theory. Now he comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to discuss the issues raised in his new book The Simulation Hypothesis: An MIT Computer Scientist Shows Why AI, Quantum Physics, and Eastern Mystics All Agree We Are in a Video Game. Virk says the evolution of our video games, including virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing, will lead us to a technological singularity. We will reach the simulation point, he argues, where we can develop all-encompassing virtual worlds like the OASIS in Ready Player One or The Matrix—and in fact we are already likely inside such a simulation. Though that sounds like science fiction, many scientists, engineers, and professors have given the simulation hypothesis serious consideration, including Elon Musk, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Nick Bostrom. But philosophers of many traditions have long contended that we are living in some kind of “illusion” and that there are other realities that we can access with our minds. Virk's work in Silicon Valley as a video game designer caused him to wonder where our technology would take us and how long it would take us to create something like the world of The Matrix—and why he's now 70 percent certain that we're already inside a simulation. Whether you are a computer scientist, a fan of science fiction like the Matrix movies, a video game enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply a fan of mind-bending thought experiments, come hear Virk for yourself and you might never look at the world the same way again. The Reclaimed Leader Podcast: Helping You Lead Change Without Losing Your Roots
Pastor, how's your inner life going? Do you feel at rest? Are you experiencing God's peace and strength? Life's demands certainly get in the way, so how can you stop living from the outside-in, and start living from the inside-out? How to find your true rest.
I'm back .... We're so often taught that clarity means choosing one thing. One path. One feeling. But what if multiple things can be true at once? What if honoring that is the most truthful thing we can do? Today's solo episode is a little more personal, a little more layered — and if I'm honest, it's been brewing inside me for a while. I want to talk about what it means to hold multiple truths at once — without needing to choose just one, or explain away the rest. I'm living in that space right now — loving life here in Costa Rica and knowing it's time to root part of my year somewhere else. Feeling grateful for the health practices that once saved me and realizing they're no longer what my body needs. This episode is for anyone standing in that messy, beautiful, expansive place between what was and what's becoming. Let's talk about what it means to live truthfully, even when it's not neat and tidy — especially then. Takeaways We're talking about: The paradox of loving where you are… and still feeling the call to go somewhere else Why the health routines, relationships, or beliefs that once worked may be keeping you small The parts of yourself you haven't fully mined — and how the world is asking you to show up, open-hearted and true What it means to hold yourself with both compassion and accountability — and become the support system you actually need How to stop trying to make life neat and tidy, and instead live in the truth of your wholeness If you've been standing in a season of contradiction, expansion, or quiet reckoning — this one's for you. Want more? If this episode stirred something in you, I'd love to invite you into my Breathe Into Being Breathwork Membership — a space to regulate, release, and reconnect with the truth of who you are. You Are What Your Microbes Eat: Gut Health 101 This week, we're talking about your gut—home to trillions of microbes that can help you sleep better, lose belly fat, and reduce inflammation… or wreak havoc. We'll explore:
Today we talk about every hollow earth speculation and we even debunk the theory. WELCOME TO CAMP!
Too often, only too often, couples live lives of quiet despair. Without knowing that's not ordinary, that's not what coupledon is all about, that we can't have lifetimes compromised to the extent that an entirety passes by and there's nothing to show for it. Life is valuable and nobody, no relationship, has a right to take away from the preciousness of each moment. Because we have too few in the entirety of a lifetime to be in a position to even lose a single one of them. We need quick reparation, priority conversations, time to sort things out, to sit down with the intent of resolution, to come halfway - if not whole - to mend. But that's easier said than done. For the simple reason that hurts are deep-seated, more cavernous than ego. And fault lines once created are like deep crevasses. The solution is not bandaid, neither surgery because the scars which remain still hurt. It's only massive change and a change of attitude that will act as the silt to fill those fissures - a flood of gratefulness which would leave its residue behind, a continuous level of self-awareness of how our inadequacies are compensated by the other's presence. Couples are a team, and much more than the centripetal forces of differences, it's the pre-assumption of intent which destroys. Close relationships have to start with gratefulness, take each other as gifts and stay in the moment, to find real joy. Zen is not a strategy for love, it is the first principle. Nothing is impossible if intent and awareness are the emotions which lead. Ordinary lives are then haloed in quiet beautiful ways. In his Confessions, Augustine dedicates the book's final section to reflecting on time. How do Christians live within time yet still live towards eternity, the telos of all time, the appointed time? Many Christians live in the past, bound by their memories, regrets and accomplishments, while others live in a state of anticipation, living in the future. But the past is past, never to return, and the future never exists in itself. We can get lost in the memory of—or anticipation of—non-existence. Rather than getting lost in time, Augustine explains how all time can be brought to immediate awareness in three different aspects. He writes: “The present considering the past is the memory, the present considering the present is immediate awareness, the present considering the future is expectation.” The only proper place for human attention is the present moment which ever presents itself. But this awareness must be “merged into” or brought before God Himself. The means that there is a need for humans to bring our existence in time to the eternal presence of God. We worship our way towards eternity. Our lives aim not to amass a hoard of things but to encounter God through sacred moments. Therefore, how we face time matters immensely. Christians sanctify or redeem time by bringing God's eternal reality into their present moment. The Church trains her sons and daughters to do this through the Sacraments in which God's own life is offered by grace. Through the sacraments the Church enters eternity, and most specially, the Holy Eucharist brings the faithful into the eternal moment of worship through the once for all sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Christians also encounter God through sacred moments as they follow the Church's calendar by dedicating the seasons and weeks to the life of Christ and his saints. Living according to the calendar of the Church helps Christians realize that eternity is not some future reality after death but the ever present and commanding reality in which time unfolds. These events marked history as such to influence the naming of two epochs, B.C. and A.D. – Before Christ and In the year of our Lord. How shall we engage with time? Redeeming time (KJV): Ephesians 5:15-20 Sanctifying time: Genesis 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. OK, God didn't rest because He was tired! Shabat is mainly used as “to cease, to stop.” All done! Instead of God doing more, He ceased from doing. And that's the idea of the 7th day … a pattern for us to cease from doing and “be” still (cease from striving) and know (wonder, contemplate, imagine, exalt) … that I am God. So God sanctified time sort of like we sanctify food … we approach food sometimes like it's something to be crammed and flushed out our bodies! Sanctifying creation: I Timothy 4:4-5 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. We make created things holy by the word of God and prayer. Holy time, Holy water, holy oil, holy communion, holy food, and so forth! Holy? To set apart with thanksgiving to the one who created it and gifted it to us! This is a call to live in a sacramental universe. To be a royal priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices until the Lord returns.

What's an outline? We don't know her! We have officially accepted that we are both world class yappers and in this episode we riff and rap about it all! Music and our favorite albums. We revive an old segment called “ I Know Why The Choppa SIngs,” where we air out our grievances. We celebrate the power of knowing when to shut up and when to yap, and we eventually dive into our weariness around all the political propaganda swirling around in times such as these. We also introduce our 2nd new segment “Message!” where we break down and critique an event from pop culture or the news. And of course, we close it out with our prophetic proclamations with our segment Put Yo' Name On It! Why do your kids believe what they believe about the world and the purpose of life? Are you equipping them to make good decisions now and in the future when you're no longer there to protect them? Will their knowledge of truth, logic, and God's Word ultimately prevail against the conflicting (and sometimes hidden) messages they might hear from friends, teachers, and TikTok? If you're a Christian parent, these are the questions that keep you up at night, but have no fear--the great Shanda Fulbright is here! As a mom, former California public school teacher, and certified apologist, Shanda is no stranger to the challenges Christian parents face during these crazy cultural times. In this week's podcast episode, Shanda and Frank discuss the subtle ways that secular society is indoctrinating or "discipling" today's youth with destructive and even anti-Christian ideologies. During their discussion, Frank and Shanda will answer questions like: What made Shanda question her faith as a 17-year old raised in the Church and what helped her overcome her doubts? What are the 3 key characteristics of "discipleship" and how is it more than just a religious term? What are 3 ways that the public school system is strategically discipling K-12 students? How did Shanda react when a teacher shared a book about transgender ideology with her son's class? What do the statistics show about faith in God among America's youth and their parents and what does that mean for the Church? What are Shanda's top 3 tips for parents who want to be more intentional about discipling their kids? Parents and other caregivers--consider this your wake-up call! The reality is that your kids are being discipled by someone or some thing. If you don't disciple them with THE truth, who will? We know you'll benefit from this week's podcast episode, and as a follow-up, consider enrolling your middle-school student in one of Shanda's self-paced courses this summer, or join Shanda LIVE in her 'Train Your Brain: An Introduction to Logic' PREMIUM course this fall!
