#1019 A 20-year-old flipping burgers at McDonald's decided one random day to build a business from scratch — and by month five, he had over 100,000 social media followers and was turning away customers! In part 1 of this 2-part episode, Bryan Lopez of WashMaxxing shares how he launched his trash bin cleaning business in Houston with just a $150 secondhand pressure washer, no capital, and a door-knocking strategy built on offering free cleanings to prove demand and collect content. He breaks down how he priced his services to avoid looking "cheap," the simple cleaning process that takes as little as 15 minutes per bin, and the social media playbook — consistent short-form posting across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook — that helped him rack up 60,000 followers and 60 million views in his very first month. If you've ever wanted to start a business but didn't know where to begin, this episode is the blueprint! What we discuss with Bryan: + Started with $150 secondhand pressure washer + No capital, no experience — just went all in + Free cleanings first to test demand + Filmed content while working for free + 60K followers, 60M views in month one + Priced at $35 for two bins, not the cheapest + 15-minute average cleaning process + Now earns $700–900 on a full day + 99% of customers come from website/social media + Serves a 15-mile radius around Houston Thank you, Bryan! #1020 He's cleaned trash bins for hundreds of customers and never spent a dollar on business cards — because he'd rather put that money toward getting more clients! In part 2 of this 2-part episode, Bryan Lopez of WashMaxxing returns to break down the business side of scaling a service company: why he ditched monthly subscriptions in favor of prepaid cleaning packages (and how that simple pricing shift boosted upfront cash flow), why he's deliberately avoided branded merch and QR codes until his client base grows, and why he chose a name flexible enough to expand beyond trash bins into pressure washing, window cleaning, and beyond. He also opens up about staying lean without employees, why he's not worried about competition, and his advice for anyone wanting to replicate his success in a different city or a completely different service niche — from lawn care to pet waste removal. Plus, he shares the sales psychology behind helping customers see the value in a service before ever mentioning price. Whether you're mowing lawns or cleaning trash bins, Bryan's playbook for turning a $150 investment into a 10K first month is one you don't want to miss! What we discuss with Bryan: + Prepaid packages over monthly subscriptions + Why he skips business cards and branded merch + Choosing a scalable brand name (WashMaxxing vs. "Bin Bros") + Securing the .com domain immediately + Staying lean: no employees yet + 80% profit margins in trash bin cleaning + Future plans: pressure washing, windows, soft washing + Selling the problem before the solution + Advice for replicating the model in any niche Thank you, Bryan! Profit Cleaners: Grow Your Cleaning Company and Redefine Profit
In this episode of The Profit Cleaners Podcast, Brandon Schoen and Brandon Condrey tackle one of the most expensive problems hiding inside cleaning businesses: employee turnover. While many owners assume they are dealing with a labor shortage, the Brandons explain why the bigger issue may actually be retention and why constantly replacing cleaners can quietly drain thousands of dollars from a business. They break down the true cost of losing a cleaner, including recruiting expenses, training, lost productivity, owner time, and revenue lost when routes cannot operate at full capacity. Using a hypothetical $10,300 cost per lost employee, they show how a cleaning company with 20 employees and 200% annual turnover could be looking at roughly $412,000 a year in turnover-related costs. Suddenly, that employee who disappeared after a week is a very expensive ghost. The Brandons also explore the changing labor market, including rising service-industry wages, increased competition for workers, and why cleaning businesses need to prepare for higher labor costs. They discuss the importance of responding quickly to applicants, offering more predictable schedules, using technology to simplify day-to-day work, and creating an employee experience that makes great cleaners actually want to stay. Finally, they explain why better retention goes far beyond hiring. Strong culture, ongoing training, reliable systems, employee recognition, and consistent leadership can turn your existing team into one of your best recruiting tools. Instead of endlessly pouring new hires into a leaky bucket, the goal is to fix the leaks, understand the numbers, and build a business where both employees and customers want to stick around.Listen now!Highlights:(01:42) Why cleaning businesses are facing a retention crisis, not just a labor shortage.(04:12) The hidden $10,300 cost of losing and replacing a cleaner.(07:58) How rising wages and a shrinking labor pool are affecting cleaning businesses.(12:13) Why responding quickly to job applicants can improve hiring success.(14:24) How predictable schedules and better systems can help retain employees.(16:08) Why a strong company culture plays an important role in employee retention.(18:32) The importance of tracking hiring, training, and turnover costs.(19:33) Why ongoing training helps build stronger, more committed teams.(22:10) How happy employees can become one of your best recruiting tools.(23:42) How auditing your hiring process can uncover costly gaps and improve retention.Links/Resources Mentioned:Profit Cleaners Website Watch the FREE Masterclass: https://profitcleaners.com/masterclass)Join the FREE Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/profitcleaners/Visit profitcleaners.com/cleanerclean to stay updated on everything coming next from Profit Cleaners. profitcleaners.com/cleanerclean

Every time it rains, water washing off roads and highways carries pollutants into nearby streams, rivers, and estuaries. One of the most concerning pollutants is 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ), a chemical byproduct of a common tire rubber additive that is among the most toxic substances known to aquatic life. This podcast introduces 6PPDQ to planners and technical staff who may be encountering it for the first time and shows what communities can do about it. Speakers from Washington State DOT, Herrera Inc, and Stewardship Partners will share lessons learned from using green stormwater infrastructure as a solution and discuss how municipalities, transportation agencies, and nonprofits can work together to deploy solutions, engage their communities, and access funding.Speakers:Tony Bush, Stormwater Branch Manager, Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Dylan Ahearn, Principal Scientist, Herrera Inc Soumi Gaddameedi, Grants & Development Manager, Stewardship PartnersKatie Harris, Greenprint Partners (moderator) Additional Resources:EFCN Webinar | Cleaning Our Waterways: Green Infrastructure Solutions for 6PPDQEFCN Blog | When It Rains, It Runs Off: What Every Community Should Know About 6PPDQWSDOT | Stormwater Retrofit Prioritization Web Map Stewardship Partners | Adopt A Downspout
Original Air Date: 8/1/2026 Episode Number: 470Episode SummaryThree topics this week. Dan opens with a paint science segment answering a listener question about urethane and enamel -- two words that appear constantly on paint labels and mean different things than most people assume. Then a full two-segment deep dive on moss and lichen: first, how to safely remove them from different types of siding, and then a step-by-step walkthrough of how Dan cleaned his own roof, what products he used, and what the warnings are. He closes with a quick listener question about painting over old glossy trim in a pre-1978 home.Timestamps[00:00] -- Show Intro and Promises[02:28] -- Paint Science: Urethane vs. Enamel[07:38] -- Choosing the Right Paint[09:56] -- Moss and Lichen Overview[10:35] -- Siding Segment Setup[11:06] -- What Moss and Lichen Are[12:43] -- Cleaning Brick and Masonry[15:09] -- Cleaning Wood Safely[16:56] -- Vinyl, Stucco, and Pressure Tips[18:27] -- Protecting Plants[19:22] -- Roof Segment Begins[20:02] -- Why Remove Roof Growth[20:14] -- Roof Damage Explained[21:52] -- Dan's Roof Wake-Up Call[23:48] -- Kill It, Don't Scrape It[24:12] -- Hire Out or DIY?[25:03] -- Best Cleaners Compared[29:20] -- Prep and Protect Plants[30:53] -- Rinse, Brush, and Apply[33:58] -- Results and Safety Warnings[36:41] -- Listener Q: Glossy Trim[37:57] -- Lead, Adhesion, and Primer[39:40] -- Wrap UpUrethane vs. Enamel: A Plain-English Explanation [02:28]A listener wrote in puzzled by the word urethane showing up everywhere -- waterborne urethanes, urethane-modified acrylics, polyurethanes -- and wanted to know whether it means something specific or just marketing. He also asked which is more durable, urethane or enamel, and which he should be reaching for.The short answer: urethane and enamel are not competing terms. They describe different things entirely.Paint basics. Every can contains pigment (color and hiding), liquid (what lets you apply it), and resin -- the binder. As paint dries and the liquid leaves, the resin and pigment form the paint film. The resin has enormous influence over how the finished coating behaves: hardness, flexibility, adhesion, resistance to moisture, cleaning, and abrasion. What urethane means. Urethane isn't an extra scoop of durability added to the can. It's a type of chemical connection that can be built into the resin structure itself. When a resin contains many of those connections, it's called a polyurethane. That chemistry is associated with toughness, abrasion resistance, and resistance to cleaners -- which is why you see the word on products for cabinets, doors, railings, and floors. What enamel means. Traditionally, enamel meant an oil-based product with a hard, smooth, glossy finish -- the go-to for doors, trim, and metal. Today it's used more broadly. You can buy acrylic enamels, waterborne enamels, and urethane enamels. An enamel can absolutely use urethane chemistry. They're not opposites. The analogy. Asking which is more durable, a urethane or an enamel, is like asking whether a pickup truck is better than a diesel engine. One describes the vehicle type. The other describes the technology inside. You can have a diesel pickup, just like you can have a urethane enamel. The practical takeaway. For an ordinary bedroom wall, don't hunt for urethane -- just get good washability and the right sheen. For cabinets, doors, or railings, an enamel built for those surfaces makes sense, and it may well use urethane chemistry. For a wood floor, get a polyurethane specifically designed for foot traffic. For exterior siding, hardness isn't even the main priority -- flexibility, adhesion, and weather resistance matter more. The product's intended use matters more than the words on the label. Stop into any RepcoLite, tell them what you're painting and what kind of abuse it'll take, and they'll sort it out.Moss vs. Lichen: What You're Actually Looking At [11:06]Before cleaning anything, it helps to know what you're dealing with, because moss and lichen behave differently from the algae and mildew covered last week -- and they have to be handled differently as a result.Moss is the green fuzzy stuff -- little soft pillows of growth, kinda charming, definitely not good for your house or roof. It grips whatever it's growing on and holds moisture against the surface.Lichen is stranger and tougher. It looks almost painted or glued on -- flat, crusty patches or small leafy, ruffled growths. It can be gray-green, orange, chalky white. Lichen is actually two organisms living together: a fungus that builds the structure and grips the surface, and an algae that makes the food. Together they can live almost anywhere and attach with a grip that's very hard to break. That's the core reason they need their own conversation -- algae and mildew are essentially films sitting on the surface. Moss and lichen are anchored into the surface, into the pores of brick, the grain of wood, down into mortar. Removing them incorrectly can cause more damage than leaving them.Cleaning Moss and Lichen Off Siding [12:43]Brick and masonry. Gently knock off the thickest mounded moss first -- but gently is the word. Plastic scraper, wooden edge, or a stiff-but-not-metal brush. No wire brushes on brick, especially older or softer brick. Nothing mounted on a power tool. Working through the harder outer face of the brick exposes the softer material underneath, which holds moisture longer and becomes even more vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage. You can create next year's problem while cleaning up this year's.After removing loose material, treat remaining moss and lichen with a cleaner labeled for both the growth type and the surface. Wet & Forget is a popular spray-and-leave option -- apply it, leave it alone, and rain carries away the dead material over weeks or months. Make sure whatever you use is designed to kill moss and lichen, not just clean the surface.Wood. Be careful with straight chlorine bleach on bare or weathered wood -- it breaks down lignin, the natural binder in the wood fibers, and can leave cedar blotchy and damaged in ways that don't reverse. Sodium percarbonate (oxygenated bleach -- essentially OxiClean) is gentler on wood and on nearby plants. Soft brush, go with the grain, low pressure, no wire brush.Vinyl and aluminum. More forgiving -- growth doesn't anchor as deep on non-porous surfaces. Soft nylon brush or cloth with a cleaner labeled for that siding type, let it sit, gentle scrub, rinse. Don't spray upward under the laps.Fiber cement. Check the manufacturer's guidance. Keep it gentle and low pressure.Stucco and EIFS. Porous and on the brittle side -- soft wash, right cleaner, low pressure. Older synthetic stucco (EIFS) is especially risky; aggressive washing can force water behind cracks and joints. If the surface is already cracked or failing, call a professional.Plants. Wet down all landscaping before starting. Cover sensitive plants with light plastic, but get it off quickly -- they'll cook under it. Rinse everything again when you're done. Why You Can't Leave Roof Moss and Lichen Alone [20:02]Moss growing thicker around the edges of shingles interferes with drainage and can cause shingles to lift or deteriorate -- creating openings for water to get in. That alone is a good enough reason to deal with it.Lichen is worse on a roof than on siding because it attaches directly to the protective granules on the shingles and can cause irreversible damage as it grips and eventually pulls them loose. There's also a curb appeal issue: moss and lichen-covered roofs read as neglected or failing, whether or not that's actually true.Dan put off dealing with his own roof growth for a couple of years, telling himself it wasn't a big deal. A roofer from Sheriff Goslin Roofing -- who came out to assess the roof's lifespan -- pointed out that the moss and lichen were actively taking years off the roof by pulling granules and giving moisture more places to work. That's what finally prompted action.Hire Out or DIY? [24:12]Before getting into the process, Dan makes the case for hiring it out -- because for a lot of people, that's the right answer. There are companies that specialize in roof and exterior cleaning. If the roof is steep, high, difficult to access, or if heights aren't your thing, hiring a professional is absolutely the right call. A fall is a lot worse than a moss problem. If you're still planning to do it yourself, read on.Cleaner Options for Moss and Lichen on Roofs [25:03]Wet & Forget. Apply per label directions and leave it. The treatment kills growth over time, and rain carries the dead material away over the following weeks and months. No rinsing, no aggressive follow-up. Depending on your roof pitch and setup, you may be able to apply most of it from a ladder or even the ground -- though you have to be very careful not to force water up under shingles at the wrong angle. Dan's roofer confirmed his customers have had good results with it.Oxygenated bleach / sodium percarbonate (essentially OxiClean). This is what Dan used. Mix approximately one pound of oxygenated bleach per two gallons of water. Apply with a pump-up garden sprayer. This is gentler on plants and on...

I've been busy working the whole day and really need a peaceful time at home.(Text2)M: You should try this.My aunt made it.W: Mm, delicious. What is it?M: It's called couscous. It's made from wheat. There's some meat on top of it.(Text3)M: I'm cooking beef with potatoes. Do you want some?W: No, thanks. I'm on a diet. I only eat vegetables and fruits.M: OK, there are some grapes in the fridge. Help yourself.W: Thanks.(Text4)M: Lisa, do you think we should get a new sofa?W: Oh, our sofa is a bit old but perfectly usable. Right now, we need a cupboard in the kitchen much more.(Text5)W: Hey, Thomas. How was the movie last night?M: It was OK, not exactly a top quality one but still a welcome surprise. I would give it three stars out of four.(Text6)M: We'd like a table for four, please.W: Have you made a booking?M: No, we haven't.W: I'm afraid there will be about a ten-to-fifteen-minute wait.M: That's OK. Oh, by the way,we'd prefer a table by the window. W: In that case, you will probably have to wait longer.M: It doesn't matter.W: OK, I'll call you when the table is ready. Your name, please?M: It's Montague.M-O-N-T-A-G-U-E. Could we look at the menu while we are waiting?W: Certainly. Here you are.(Text7)W: Good evening. I hope you'll enjoy your stay.M: Thanks.(Text8)M: Oh, good morning. Susan Brown, isn't it?W: Yes, good morning.M: Oh, I'm John Reeves. I manage the Sales Department here at Rasco International. You can call me John.W: OK, John.M: Have you already been shown round the company?W: Yes. I got here at 9 a.m.And Tara gave me a tour of the place.M: And what did you think?W: It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be.M: Yes. A lot of people say that. Now we have over fifty people working here. Well, where did you hear about Rasco International?W: From my brother,Michael Brown. He worked for you a couple of years ago and he has always spoken well of you.M: Yes, I remember him. You'll say hi to him from me, won't you?W: OK, sure.(Text9)W: Sam, I listened to a lecture last night at the art gallery and the artist told us that we don't need to be professional to give our home a new look.M: So, did the artist say howto do it exactly? I'm about to decorate my house.W: Yes, I have noted down a few of the creative ways he talked about.M: I'd love to hear about them. For example, should I redesign the entrance to my home?W: Yeah, it's important. And it's the first thing people will see when they visit. It should reflect the design of the rest of your house. Depending on your budget, you might want to give your front door a fresh coat of paint.M: Mm, I'll consider that.Another thing is I have a big table in my dining room that no one ever sits at.W: Yeah. Some people never use their dining tables. So why hold onto them? Replace the big table with a smaller round table.M: That's a good idea. The whole family will still be able to sit there and it won't feel quite as polished.W: Yes, and all these creative ways can be finished on your own to suit your design style and personal taste.(Text10) Many students ask me about how to understand, and enjoy the experience of concert going. So today, I'd like to take some time to talk about it. First of all, a live concert is totally different from listening to recordings. In a live performance, what is performed, how it sounds and how the artist feels about the performance, these exist for only a very short moment and can never be repeated. As an audience responds to the excitement of such moments, feelings are exchanged between stage and hall. You have many kinds of concerts to choose from by many kinds of performing groups. Concerts by university performing groups are easily accessible, free or at a relatively low price and often of high quality. Announcements of such concerts will be found in the newspaper of our university. Performances outside the university are announced in local newspapers. These concerts tend to be more expensive but discount tickets are often available for students. Though tickets can usually be bought on the day or night of a concert, you have a wide choice if you buy them in advance at the box office or on the Internal. If possible, prepare fora concert by listening to some of the works to be performed and by reading about the musicians.

Original Air Date: 07/25/26 Episode Number: 469Episode SummaryA listener question about painting aluminum siding kicks off the show, and Dan splits the answer across two segments with a detour in the middle: a full conversation on how to identify and safely clean biological growth off the exterior of your home -- algae, mold, mildew, moss, and lichen. The aluminum siding answer wraps up at the end with product recommendations and a strong case for always doing two coats. Moss and lichen get their own episode next week.Timestamps[00:00] -- Show Kickoff[00:30] -- Listener Question: Aluminum Siding[01:44] -- Oxidation and Prep Basics[03:58] -- Wash, Scrub, Rinse[05:42] -- Hand Test and Inspection[07:21] -- Primer or Not[08:11] -- Switch to Algae Topic[08:53] -- Brick Recap and What Triggered This[12:20] -- What Growth Is It?[13:32] -- Algae, Moss, Lichen, Mold[16:16] -- Efflorescence Sidebar[17:29] -- Moisture Causes First[19:01] -- Cleaning Safely Tease[20:01] -- Moss vs. Mold Distinction[21:00] -- Golden Rule: Gentle Cleaning[22:47] -- Pick the Right Cleaner[25:50] -- Prep Before Repainting[27:09] -- Hose, Not Pressure Washer[29:53] -- Why Not Straight Bleach[31:22] -- Protect Plants from Runoff[32:41] -- Fix the Moisture Root Cause[33:56] -- Aluminum Siding Paint Picks[34:45] -- Two Coats Really Matters[36:33] -- Best Benjamin Moore Options[38:54] -- Temperature and Wrap UpListener Question: Aluminum Siding [00:30]A listener wrote in asking about painting their tan aluminum-sided house a darker blue. They wanted to know what prep was involved, whether one-coat coverage was possible, and what products to use.Dan splits the answer into two segments. The short version on the one-coat question: two coats, always. The longer version on everything else follows below.Oxidation and Prep Basics [01:44]The single most important thing to understand about painting aluminum siding is oxidation. If you've ever rubbed your hand across older aluminum and ended up with white chalky powder on your palm, that's the original factory finish breaking down from years of sun, rain, and weather. That chalk has to come off before any paint goes on.Paint bonds to a surface. If that surface is a loose layer of chalk sitting on top of old factory finish, the paint is bonding to the chalk -- not to the siding. When the chalk lets go, the new paint goes with it. This is the most common reason aluminum siding paint jobs fail, and it's entirely avoidable.A pressure washer alone won't get you there. It'll knock off dirt and cobwebs, but it doesn't automatically remove oxidation. Dan compares it to washing your car with only a pressure washer after an entire Michigan summer of construction zones and dirt roads -- you'll get some of it, but you won't get all of it.Wash, Scrub, Rinse [03:58]Start with a good exterior house cleaner that's built to break down dirt, grime, mildew, and oxidized residue. Apply it, and then physically scrub the surface -- a soft-bristle siding brush on an extension pole makes this manageable. Work in sections so you can scrub and rinse before the cleaner dries on the siding. You can use a pressure washer for rinsing, but keep the pressure reasonable and always direct the spray downward the way rain would naturally hit the siding. Shooting water upward beneath the panel laps can drive moisture into the wall. The pressure washer is a rinsing and help-with-cleaning tool. The scrubbing still has to happen.Hand Test and Inspection [05:42]Once the siding is dry, perform the hand test: rub your palm firmly across the surface. If it comes away clean, you're good to move on. If there's still a chalky residue on your hand, keep cleaning. The surface doesn't need to be microscopically perfect, but you should not be able to casually wipe your hand across it and look like you've been handling powdered sugar. While you're working your way around the house, inspect as you go. Look for peeling paint, corrosion, bare aluminum, dents, damaged panels, and failed caulk around windows, doors, and penetrations. Bare or corroded areas may need spot priming before finish paint -- bring photos into RepcoLite and they'll point you toward the right primer. Loose paint should be scraped away and edges feather-sanded so they don't telegraph through the new finish.Primer or Not [07:21]If the original factory finish is clean, intact, and firmly bonded, you do not need to prime the whole house. No matter what you read online. A high-quality exterior acrylic straight over a clean, sound factory finish is the right call. Primer is for bare spots and problem areas only.Biological Growth: What Are You Actually Looking At? [12:20]Dan took a walk around his own house after mentioning offhand on last week's show that brick doesn't need much maintenance -- "every now and then you clean the algae off." That comment nagged at him all week until he went and looked. His back wall, under two old maple trees, was covered in green growth on both the brick and the vinyl siding on the addition. This week's middle segment covers what to do about it.Before you clean anything, figure out what you're actually dealing with. The growth type matters, and the surface it's on matters just as much.Algae is the most common. Thin, flat, greenish film, usually on shaded or damp areas. Feels slick when wet. Spreads across the surface rather than growing in clumps.Moss is thicker and softer -- you know what it looks like. It holds moisture against the wall, which creates problems depending on what the wall is made of. On vinyl it's mainly a staining and maintenance issue since vinyl doesn't rot, but on wood siding or shingles it can contribute to paint peeling, decay, and eventually rot. On brick, stucco, or stone it keeps mortar joints and damaged areas wetter longer than they should be.Lichen is crusty and firmly attached -- it can be gray, yellow, pale green, orange, or black. It's the toughest of the group to remove because it grips the surface aggressively. On soft brick or old mortar, scraping it off can pull part of the surface along with it. Lichen on roofs gets its own conversation next week.Mold and mildew tend to appear darker, blotchy, fuzzy, or powdery.Efflorescence -- the white, fuzzy stuff sometimes seen on brick or concrete -- looks biological but isn't. It's salt deposits left behind by moisture moving through the masonry. Address the moisture source; don't just clean it off and move on.Dan is covering algae, mold, and mildew this week. Moss and lichen get their own episode next week, including how to deal with them on the roof.Fix the Moisture Problem First [17:29]Cleaning is not a permanent fix if you don't address why the growth is there. Moisture is the cause of all of it.Before mixing any cleaner, look at what's creating the damp conditions: overflowing gutters, a downspout dumping water next to the wall, a sprinkler hitting the siding, shrubs growing too tight against the house and blocking airflow, mulch or soil piled high against the brick, or heavy shade from tree canopy keeping the wall from drying out. If you clean the wall and leave the moisture problem in place, the growth is going to come back -- sometimes pretty quickly.Cleaning Safely: JoeMax [22:47]Start with the gentlest method that will get the job done. Don't reach for the strongest chemical available or fire up the pressure washer first.Inspect the surface before you do anything. On brick, check the mortar joints -- is it solid or loose and powdery? On siding, look for loose panels, open caulk joints, peeling paint, or damaged edges. The condition of the surface determines how carefully you have to work. Also confirm you're actually dealing with biological growth and not just dirt or pollen. If it's just a surface film of grime, mild dish soap, a scrub brush, and a hose will probably handle it without any specialty product. If it's actual biological growth, the product Dan recommends is JoeMax House Cleaner and Mildew Killer. It's a concentrate that combines a mildewcide, bleach activator, and detergents. You mix it with household bleach and water. It kills mold and mildew and lifts dirt and staining at the same time, and it's rated for virtually every surface on the outside of a house -- vinyl, aluminum, painted or stained wood, trim, fences, stucco, concrete, and brick. One product covers everything. For Dan's situation with both brick and vinyl on the same house, that matters.Using it is straightforward: mix per the label, spray on, give it about five minutes to work, and rinse off. Most smooth surfaces won't need scrubbing. Textured surfaces like brick may need a light scrub. Mix only what you'll use in the next few hours -- once bleach is added, it's only good for a short time and can't be saved. Why Not Just Use Straight Bleach? [29:53]Bleach is not a great cleaner on its own. It beads up and runs off rather than wetting the surface and lifting residue. It also flashes off quickly -- it can lighten a mildew stain and evaporate before it actually kills the growth, so the problem comes right back. JoeMax has detergents that let it wet the surface, carry the contamination away, and stay active long enough to do the job properly.Hose, Not Pressure Washer [27:09]For the actual cleaning, a garden hose with a...

Your 20s are the time to build yourself into something useful. Not later. Now.In this episode I talk about the skills that every man needs to be developing right now. Fighting. Fishing. Hunting. Cooking. Cleaning. Learning how to eat right and actually take care of your body. Getting your spiritual life in order. Building real relationships. Understanding your own emotions instead of running from them. Most guys cruise through their 20s without learning any of this and then wonder why they feel lost at 30. The truth is nobody is going to hand you this stuff. You have to go get it. You have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations, learn things the hard way, and actually commit to becoming a well-rounded man. Not just strong. Not just spiritual. Not just smart. All of it.These skills aren't optional. They're the foundation for everything. For being a good husband. A good father. A man your family can depend on. If you're in your 20s right now, pay attention. If you're past your 20s and you skipped some of this, it's not too late but stop wasting time.Download the Catholic Warrior app and start your 7 Day Free Trial. catholicwarrior.com

Welcome back to Part Two of my conversation with Carl Grimes. Our conversation picks up where we left off explaining more of the five principles and then gets into how Environmental health is impacting the building of homes. EnjoyHayward Score Healthy Home Director Carl Grimes, has a unique combination of experiences. He has personal experience of the disabling impact of an unhealthy home, and professional experience working in the Indoor Air Quality field. Both these experiences lead him to the Hayword Score where they are helping people live healthier lives by first believing in the negative health experiences they are having in their home, and second by offering a tool that can help homeowners understand these experiences. Carl understands that moisture and mold are not the only things that lead to poor indoor air quality and is trying to work out the synergistic interactions between occupants, house, and building science that can result in either a health supporting or health degrading environment.Carl Grimes on LinkedInHayward ScoreIndoor air quality Association The Quick Environmental Exposure and Sensitivity Inventory(Symptom Star)ASHRAE Guideline 10-2023 -- Interactions Affecting theAchievement of Acceptable Indoor EnvironmentsToxicant-Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT) - ChemicalIntoleranceInstitute of Inspection, Cleaning and RestorationCertification (IICRC)ANSI S520-2025 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation

How often do you find yourself rushing… even when nothing is actually wrong? You're hurrying your kids to get in the car. Speed-walking through the grocery store. Eating lunch while answering emails. Counting down to Friday. Thinking, "I just need to get through today." Somewhere along the way, I think we've started treating ordinary life like it's an emergency. I started saying these 5 words to myself... "This is not an emergency." Today we're going to talk about how to stop living like every single thing is on fire... ...because it isn't. And when you start reminding yourself that this isn't an emergency... you don't just become calmer… you become happier overall. We Have Accidentally Turned Everyday Life Into An Emergency Think about how many times today you probably said... "Hurry." "We're late." "Come on." "We don't have time." "Let's go." Most of us are moving at emergency speed... ...without an emergency. Ask yourself... If someone watched security camera footage of my life... would they think I was constantly responding to disasters? Or just making breakfast? Because sometimes they look exactly the same. Examples We Rush Through Every Day Getting kids ready for school Instead of... "Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!" Imagine saying internally... "This isn't an emergency." Will they still get dressed? Yes. Will yelling make it faster? Usually not. But it definitely changes everyone's morning. Waiting in line We immediately grab our phones. Complain. Get frustrated. Instead... "This isn't an emergency." Maybe it's two extra minutes. Maybe this becomes your breathing break. Traffic Somebody cuts you off. You're late. Heart rate skyrockets. Except... You arriving thirty seconds sooner changes almost nothing. Grocery shopping People rush aisle to aisle. Barely noticing anyone. Never smiling. Never enjoying choosing food they'll feed their family. Life becomes one giant checklist. Cleaning your house Instead of... "I have to get this done." Try... "I GET to create a home my family enjoys." Same task. Different experience. Folding laundry Jay Shetty often talks about mindfulness inside ordinary moments. Laundry isn't stealing your life. Laundry IS your life. These ordinary moments ARE your life. The "Can't Wait Until..." Trap This one is huge. People spend decades saying... "I can't wait until..." The baby sleeps through the night. They're potty trained. They're in kindergarten. Middle school. High school. College. Retirement. Vacation. Friday. Summer. The remodel is finished. When we finally move. When the house is clean. When I lose twenty pounds. Jay Shetty talks often about how our minds live in the future... and miss the only place life actually exists. Today. What If This Was The Good Part? This might be the chapter you'll miss someday. The noisy dinner table. Little baseball cleats by the door. Teenagers asking for rides. Kids needing hugs. Messy kitchens. Dog hair everywhere. The chaos... might actually be the dream. Looking For What's Wrong One thing I've noticed... When we're rushing... our brain becomes a problem detector. Traffic. Mess. Noise. Delays. People moving too slowly. Bad service. Rain. We're constantly scanning for irritation. Instead... What if we asked... What's beautiful about this moment? What would I miss if this disappeared tomorrow? The Brain Finds What It Looks For If you're looking for inconvenience... you'll always find it. If you're looking for joy... you'll find that too. This is something both Mel Robbins and Jay Shetty return to in different ways: attention shapes experience. You don't control every circumstance, but you do have influence over where your mind rests. Different Phases Of Life Young parents Instead of... "I just need bedtime." Think... "This little voice asking for one more story won't last forever." Parents of teenagers Instead of... "I can't wait until they're independent." Think... "One day they'll stop needing me this much." Working professionals Instead of rushing meeting to meeting... Take thirty seconds. Breathe. Drink your coffee while it's hot. Look out the window. Nothing explodes. Entrepreneurs Everything feels urgent. Every email. Every customer. Every notification. Every opportunity. But if we're honest... very few business decisions require panic. Good businesses are built through consistent decisions... not frantic ones. Questions To Ask Yourself Whenever you feel yourself speeding up... Ask: Is someone in danger? Is this actually urgent? Will this matter next week? Can I slow my breathing? Can I speak softer? Can I smile? Can I enjoy this? Can I choose peace instead? My Favorite Reset Whenever I notice myself getting worked up... I literally say... "This is not an emergency." Sometimes out loud. Immediately... My shoulders drop. My breathing slows. My voice softens. I become a better mom. A better wife. A better friend. A better business owner. Not because my circumstances changed... but because my nervous system changed. Tiny Moments That Become Better Waiting for your coffee. Watching your child tie their shoes. Cooking dinner. Folding towels. Driving to volleyball practice. Standing in line at Disneyland. Watching Little League warmups. Listening to your teenager tell a story that takes forever. Walking your dog. Sunsets. Rainstorms. Family dinners. These moments don't need to be escaped. They're the moments we're going to remember. CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK This week... Every single time you notice yourself rushing... Pause. Take one deep breath. And simply say... "This isn't an emergency." Then intentionally slow down by just 10%. Walk slower. Talk slower. Eat slower. Drive calmer. Listen longer. Smile more. You might be surprised how much life you discover in those extra few seconds. Life isn't usually asking us to move faster. It's asking us to be more present. The irony is that we spend so much of life racing toward the future... that we barely experience the life we're actually living. So this week... Give yourself one simple reminder. "This is not an emergency." Because most of the time... it isn't. And when you stop treating ordinary moments like crises... those ordinary moments become extraordinary. I hope this episode helps you slow down & enjoy the beautiful life you're already living.
On this episode of The Ty Brady Way, Ty sits down with Tom Richter, regional developer for Jan Pro of Utah, a commercial cleaning franchise that has grown under his leadership from a second mortgage and a two-person operation into a 125-franchisee network with a multi-million dollar economic footprint across the state. Tom's story is one that will resonate with anyone who has ever looked at a corporate career and wondered if there was something more, and then actually did something about it. Tom grew up in Nebraska as a farmer, which he describes as the original entrepreneurial proving ground. Risk, reward, and no guaranteed outcome were baked into his upbringing. He carried that mindset into a 21-year corporate career, but after surviving three mergers, acquisitions, and hostile takeovers, the writing was on the wall. Rather than find another company to work for, Tom started looking at what it would mean to finally bet on himself. A former boss had bought into Jan Pro down in Tampa, Tom flew out to meet the founders, and something clicked. Their core values lined up. By the time the flight home landed, his mind was made up. Seven of his eight siblings were entrepreneurs, and he realized he was not supposed to be working for anyone else either. Tom and his wife Carol took a second mortgage out on their home and purchased the rights to develop Jan Pro across the state of Utah, becoming only the 12th city to come on board with the brand and one of the first two locations in the entire Western United States. The first three to five years were exactly what you would expect from any startup. Tom was making sales calls, training new franchise owners, handling operations, and doing whatever needed doing while Carol managed the office while still working remotely for Intermountain Healthcare. Just the two of them for the first six months before bringing on their first hire. Today that team has grown to 12 support staff serving 125 franchise owners across Utah. The Jan Pro model is something Tom explains with a lot of clarity and obvious pride. Rather than sending franchise owners out to fend for themselves, Jan Pro handles the sales, the client contracts, the audits and inspections, the invoicing, and the collections. Franchise owners come to Tom knowing how much business they want to build, they get trained, and then the regional development team goes out and gets their clients for them. Tom compares it to being the general contractor while the franchise owner supplies the labor. It removes most of the barriers that cause small cleaning operations to fail, and it is why the people who follow the model consistently succeed. The success stories are hard to ignore. One franchise owner came in from Logan with just $950, the entry level at the time, starting with $500 a month in cleaning revenue. Twenty years later he is generating $40,000 a month and employs around 20 people, all while keeping his full-time job. Another owner arrived from Venezuela on refugee asylum status after losing three auto mechanic shops in Caracas to the political environment there. He is now Jan Pro Utah's largest franchise owner, on track to hit a million dollars in revenue in just his fifth year with around 35 employees. These are not outliers. They are what the model produces when people commit to it. Tom is candid about what gets people into trouble. The biggest issue is not the cleaning itself, it is management. A husband and wife team or a two-person operation can generally get to $75,000 or $100,000 in revenue on their own, but something shifts when they bring on employees. The expectation that an employee will care about the work the same way they do is where things start to fall apart. Without proper training, supervision, and ongoing engagement, it can unravel fast. His advice is direct: if you do not have strong business acumen, go get it before you need it, whether through SCORE or another resource that can fill in the gaps. Tom also touches on what it takes mentally to make the leap into franchising or any kind of business ownership. He believes roughly 90% of people want to start something of their own, but half of them talk themselves out of it when they honestly assess their risk tolerance and their ability to push through the hard early years. That self-awareness is not weakness, it is honesty, and Tom respects it. But for those who do have that fortitude, the Jan Pro model is structured to give them as much runway as possible to succeed. Looking ahead, Tom expects 20 to 30 percent year-over-year growth for the next five or more years and is on track to earn Gold Circle recognition among Jan Pro's top 20 offices worldwide. His son has been part of the business for 12 years and is moving into ownership, setting up a transition that will carry the business well beyond Tom and Carol's chapter. After 27 years of building, refining, and proving the model, the legacy looks like it is in good hands. "We are the invisibles. We clean when no one is around."Most people work during the day. But for nearly half of Europe's cleaners, the shift begins when everyone else goes home.In this episode, we examine the hidden toll of night work and split shifts—and why daytime cleaning is a proven, humane alternative. We hear from two cleaners living in two different realities: one trapped in the exhaustion of the night, and the other working under a better system but with its own challenges. In this episode, we hear from:

High performance isn't about waking up at 4AM, cold plunging, or adding more to your already full plate. In this episode I break down the three things that actually separate high performers from everyone else - discipline, systems, and standards - and walk through exactly what I'm building into my own life right now to level up in this new chapter. What I cover:
Most car enthusiasts overlook one seemingly minor detail that can turn into a major headache—what happens when you polish or coat over factory or aftermarket paint that isn't perfectly uniform? If you've ever dealt with weird streaks, patches, or ghosting on a vehicle's finish, you're not alone—and this episode is your ultimate guide to understanding and resolving these tricky paint anomalies.Join Marshall and Nick as they dissect real-world scenarios from the Hyper Clean Specialist group—like mysterious patches on a 2026 Z4 with factory matte paint, uneven coating after a body shop repair, and what to do when emblem removal leaves an imprint behind. Together they break down what causes ghosting and streaks, how to tell whether the issue is in the paint or the coating, and the safest steps to correct or prevent these problems without risking damage. You'll also hear practical advice on PPF, coatings, and carbon fiber, including when polishing is safe, when to leave something alone, and how to think about wait times after repainting. The conversation even covers quick protection options for customers who want short-term defense without committing to a full stak, plus a few real-world detailing techniques for washing, claying, drying, and wheel care.Chapters0:00 — Questions from the community2:05 — Choosing the right polisher13:36 — Glass cleaner in hot weather21:38 — Coating removal and PPF on matte paint26:13 — Strange paint line on factory satin finish34:01 — Emblem imprint on carbon fiber and PPF37:57 — Repaint wait times for coating43:15 — Quick protection options: SLIQ vs spray coat48:38 — Rust on wheels after detailing53:17 — Preventing algae in water tanks
