One of the more unusual fundraising events in Sacramento, Big Brothers Big Sisters take a unique approach to conquering fear and building relationships. Dr. Gina Warren, along with a committed team of volunteers and staff have embarked on a journey to change their childhood community with an innovative approach through education. Working to break the intergenerational trauma that has left families in poverty, homeless, incarcerated and under-educated, Neighborhood Wellness is breaking that cycle of trauma with neighborhood Navigators, many with 20,30, even 40 years of familiarity in the Del Paso Heights community. Working to develop and prepare high school students for college, vocational schooling or work, the education and awareness of opportunity and process is oriented from the inside out and bottom up. Families learn from each other how to best change for the better and begin to accept a life of experiences once thought unobtainable. Programs like "Sister to Sister" and "SHE Program" have allowed young women to be mentored and learn a different way of life. Junior Achievement in the greater Sacramento area is an institution that has been helping youth get a grasp on financial literacy for over 60 years. As with many of the local non-profit agencies and business, the opportunity to continue with their traditional fundraising events has been diminished. Learn a little more about the steps JA is taking to both maintain and grow and some of the unique programs they offer to students in the community about the awareness of money. Operating nearly totally virtually, the JA programs will be offered at no charge for the near future to give students at home the ability to participate and engage while the shelter in place rules continue. Celebrating 40 years of granting children's wishes and World Wish Day, Make-A-Wish has seen over $1M of event income evaporate as a result of shelter in place mandates during their big event season. In addition, many of the children's wishes cannot be granted at this time as they involve travel or large gatherings. However, with that same fervor of hope that a wish brings to a child, A Toast To Hope is the virtual outcome for what is typically the largest fundraiser of the year. April 29 is the date and the event will be live-streamed on Facebook as well as posted on YouTube. Included in the event will be more than 150 auction items that can be bid on, amazing getaways to Hawaii and Tahoe with no blackout dates and many great wines and baskets of goodies. This episode of the Non-Profit Podcast Series is with Stephanie Vierstra, Executive Director of Seniors First. Serving some of the most vulnerable to Covid-19, Seniors First is the primary source of food and other necessary services serving those 65 and over. This is an outstanding community program that continues to support seniors in the Placer Sierra region. The virus has so impacted the organization that they've lost all their van drivers as they were all over the age of 65. Nearly a third of the staff has had to be quarantined in spite of being an essential service. This leaves them with a greater need and that is, as a result of the limited delivery capability, they now must prepare food to last for multiple days since daily deliveries are not an option on the reduced staff. Seniors First is also the "Meals on Wheels" provider for Placer County as well. Continuing the series of podcasts for non-profits during the shelter-in-place restrictions, Kids First is the source for counseling and family therapy in Placer County. With several programs geared toward children, child abuse is the most critical and with April being Child Abuse Prevention Month, it raises the scepter even more.
