Matt has worn many hats throughout his tenure, working in outreach, programming, research and evaluation, and, finally, as our CFO. Beyond his professional role, Matt shares how Girl Scouts has influenced his parenting: “I am absolutely a better parent because I am a Girl Scout person.” He reflects on one of the most important lessons he's learned: “I think Girl Scouts helped me remember that they have to choose. It's not really about me. I just have to be there for them.” In this episode, he breaks down what makes Girl Scouts such a powerful and transformative experience for girls and why more families should take advantage of it. It benefits not only the girls but everyone involved.

Before joining Girl Scouts, he worked at YMCA Camps, but eventually transitioned to the property side with GSHOM where he found a home, ensuring that camps remain a place of adventure and growth for girls. Now, his mission is to make camp the best it can be: “If I can be that guy… I love to use my background to make [the counselors] job easier and to make camp better.” For Rob, the biggest reward is seeing the impact of his work firsthand: “When we can see the impact we are having with kids and being able to directly affect their experience at camp—that is really where the rewards come from.” Join us as Rob shares his journey, his love for camp, and how his behind-the-scenes work helps create unforgettable experiences for Girl Scouts.

Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Molly created Nurturing Nature Knowledge education program to encourage an interest in nature and the environment in kids. Hi! My name is Molly McGarity. I am a Girl Scout Ambassador from Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and a senior in High School. I have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, making 2021 my 13th year as a member! I have earned my bronze and silver award and I am so excited to be earning my Gold Award. I am a member of the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson competitive canoe team and I have spent about half of the summers of my life at Camp Addisone Boyce. Being in Girl Scouts has allowed me to meet so many friends and try so many new things. It has also helped me realize how much I love nature and teaching people. My experiences at Camp Addisone Boyce were a big inspiration behind this project, I wanted to create something to get kids outside and excited about nature! I was also inspired by my grandfather, Sidney Horenstein, who was an environmental educator and geologist. The passion I have found for the outdoors and the environment, combined with my love of working with kids pushed me to pursue this project. In the future, I plan to become an environmental educator and continue sharing my passions with anyone who wants to listen! This project has solidified that this is the path that I want to take! This episode is a departure from our support of cancelled events for non-profits rescheduling virtually. This is quite the opposite in that it's something this non-profit provides our community. CEO Dr. Linda Farley explains 5 lessons of leadership she's implemented to allow her organization to not only perform during the pandemic but exit with a stronger team, more options for the girls and young women they serve and better prepare them for leadership roles in their lives. The content in this episode can benefit any organization, non-profit or for profit as it provides insights to be implemented, a refresher for managers or team leaders and some common sense elements to lead with confidence and decisiveness. Everyone knows their favorite Girl Scout cookie but going well beyond the cookie is the leadership in our communities that originated as a Girl Scout. This episode clearly exhibits why.
030: Nonprofit Leadership in Uncertain Times (Angela Woods)SUMMARYAs the COVID-19 situation descended on her organization with stunning speed, Angela Woods knew she would have to make critical strategic decisions without the luxury of time to thoroughly evaluate options or wait for additional data. Like so many nonprofit leaders right now, she had to rely on her instincts and experience to best “triage” an evolving situation. How she’s managed these circumstances so far is a great study in leadership in action and offers practical ideas and advice for nonprofit leaders at all levels facing similar uncertainty. Angela and I discuss how she rallied her staff, how she adjusted the mechanics of her board, how she adapted her short-term programming, and how she now views her strategic plan going forward. Typical of a good leader, she’s found ways to utilize the current challenges as a means to explore new opportunities for her organization and the girls it serves.ABOUT ANGELAAngela Woods brings over 20 years of combined for-profit and not for profit leadership experience to the Girl Scouts movement and serves as the CEO of the Hornets’ Nest Council in Charlotte, NC. Leveraging her experience as a strategist, she has increased the Council's market visibility, increasing corporate support and individual giving and led the technology platform redesign. Prior to leading the Hornets’ Nest Council, Angela served as the Chief Executive Officer for Girl Scouts Heart of the South in Memphis, TN. Before this appointment, she served as the Interim Chief Executive Officer and COO of the United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) in Washington, D.C. and she also worked for United Way of Central Carolinas where she served as the Senior Vice President of Community Building & Administration. Preceding that, she worked at Bank of America in the areas of institutional trusts, retirement planning and investments, and global finance recruiting. Angela serves on the Board of Directors for two nonprofit organizations: Charlotte Merchants Foundation and Apparo, and in 2015, the Mecklenburg Times named her as one of 50 Most Influential Women in Charlotte. Hutchison is dedicated to academic excellence and to the parallel development of mind, body, and spirit as it educates young women for success in college and for lives of integrity and responsible citizenship. Hutchison School is hosting their Camp Congress Event in coordination with Girl Scouts Heart of the South on March 30th. Camp Congress for Girls is a leadership program that introduces girls ages 8 to 15 to politics. Camp begins with a girl-friendly lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives, the US Senate or for the presidency. She will create her own campaign with a platform, campaign slogan, campaign finance plan, campaign website and a political ad for television. All campers will register to vote and then vote in an election. Once elected to Congress and sworn in, the newly installed members of Congress will learn how to introduce a bill, debate the merits of the bill, lobby fellow legislators, collaborate with the Executive branch and finally vote on the proposed bill. Camp will culminate with a ceremonial signing of the bill by our Ms. President. During the camp session the campers will meet elected officials and political consultants that will serve as honorary camp counselors.
