Arts and Entertainment: Rancho Cordova is known as the "City of Events" and houses one of the best Art Complex in our region The MACC. The City has its own orchestra, Symphony D'oro, a Swing Dance Band, a Black Box Theatre, and features one of the largest July 4th fireworks displays in the region, and a whole slate of large outdoor events. Every month Director/ Curator of The MACC, Cheryl Gleason speaks to visual artists, musicians, actors, theatre groups as well as other notable influencers in the art scene in the Sacramento Region. It is not uncommon to hear people marvel at the explosion of the arts in Rancho Cordova, and for good reason. Where ever you go in our city, you are likely to experience a bit of art – whether painted on the side of a utility box, as music heard wafting through a grocery store or enjoyed during a casual wander through the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center. It's true that the arts have continued to grow in Rancho Cordova in so many ways that it is easy to forget that it has been only 10 years since this spark was ignited, and how the wonderful Marsha Mason has guided it to success. Marsha brought a background as a landscape architect with experience running large programs in the public sector to Rancho Cordova's newborn arts movement back in 2012. She was CEO of Sites Pacific, Inc., a landscape architectural firm specializing in public works projects and visual impact assessments. She taught landscape architecture courses as a lecturer at U.C. Davis. Marsha served as President of the Sierra Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, was a founder of WalkSacramento. Those skills all come together in 2012 as Marsha joined a small group of local artists to work with the Cordova Community Council to form what has become known as “Rancho Cordova Arts.” That year, the first City Hall exhibit launched with a fine art exhibit of local artists aptly named “Genesis.” Most artists are content – and prefer -- to simply work on their art, but Marsha is not like most artists. Understanding the importance of having an organization of people committed to an artistic future, she rolled up her sleeves to accomplish less glamourous foundational tasks like creating a non-profit organization, developing a website, creating a newsletter and focusing artistic energy in the community to produce memorable art events.

In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The second-quarter earnings season, in which companies report their results for the second quarter, will be picking up steam soon. The results will likely have a significant impact on stock returns for the remainder of the year as investors assess how companies are dealing with inflation, rising interest rates, and concerns about economic growth. In addition, the number and amount of negative earnings adjustments that are taken this quarter may impact the overall earnings results as they have during past market downturns. Also, While the major stock indexes were down as much as 20% earlier this year there are several areas of the market where the losses have been much greater. The cryptocurrency area as well as technology companies that recently went public have experienced losses of 70-80% over the past nine months. However, many mainstream investors did not participate in these investments making their experience much different. And, The IRS recommends that taxpayers, including those who are on extension, not wait until the last minute to file their returns. The IRS is already dealing with a large backlog of returns to be processed so the sooner a taxpayer gets their return into the IRS the sooner their refund may be processed. Those who wait until the deadline may end up at “the back of the line” which could lead to a long delay in processing. Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- Planned Solutions sponsored and Chase and Joel played in a golf tournament in support of the Katie Nues Foundation. The Katie Nues Foundation founded the first clinic to treat children with Rett's disease on the West Coast located in Oakland, CA. The Foundation continues to fund the clinic's operations and offer support for families whose children have been diagnosed with Rett's disease. How a local utility company is driving global innovation and fueling entrepreneurs… SMUD, the 6th largest community owned utility company in the country, like other large corporations at some point in their life cycle, are facing the innovator's dilemma. Their industry is in the process of being disrupted and if they do nothing they could find themselves out of business. Sound familiar? Think Blockbuster, Radio Shack, Circuit City and many other companies that refused to change with the times. Arlen Orchard, the CEO of SMUD, recognizes they are in the process of being disrupted and is taking action to make this an opportunity for SMUD, entrepreneurs, and the entire Sacramento Region. SMUD is leading the drive, with the help of countless partners, for the creation of the California Mobility Center. Arlen Orchard, SMUD's CEO, joined me on the podcast to talk about how this initiative was born, why it matters for this region, and why SMUD, a large, community owned organization is investing so heavily in leading and funding this effort. What energized me the most about our discussion is how the California Mobility Center has put entrepreneurs at the center of their effort – with plans to foster innovation through assets like prototyping facilities, a trained workforce, and an investment fund. Entrepreneurs are the answer…they solve the world's biggest problems like the future of mobility and clean transportation…and with the region's key resources so significantly aligning to attract, support and amplify entrepreneurial efforts, I believe anything is possible! What you will learn listening to this episode: Utility companies are being disrupted. They are becoming two sides of the same coin and will be the fuel provider for the future of transportation (2:54) Arlen shares shares how SMUD is leading the charge on the public/private consortium California Mobility Center and the fund that will stand alongside it. Description: A discussion on the current state of hate crimes, the challenge with underreporting, the impact on victims and the targeted groups and what is being done today to protect the community against these crimes. Guests are US Attorney McGregor Scott, District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp, Supervising Deputy DA Thien Ho, President of the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region Deborah Gonzalez and SALAM Islamic Center Chairman Waseem Bawa. Show Notes: The conversation starts with the difference between a hate activity vs. a hate crime. If people are not sure if something is a hate crime, they should still report it and let law enforcement make that determination. The group discusses the state of hate crimes today. Faith leaders talk about and security measures that are now needed at houses of worship and faith-based events, and the pursuit of grants to fund additional security. The topic turns to the impact hate crimes has on its specific victims and the targeted groups that are attacked – which is unique to hate crimes. It’s a very personal crime against who a person is, a part of their identity. The Hate Crimes Task Force is working to bring law enforcement and community groups together to share information and protect the region from organized and individual (lone) hate crime attacks. Several examples are given of how law enforcement is informing and protecting the faith community and the direct, two-way open communication the Task Force has with faith and other community organizations. The US Attorney’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office have specialized Hate Crimes Units. Some Sacramento County stats and a fully adjudicated hate crimes case example was shared. The group talks about the most significant challenge with hate crimes – underreporting. Everyone agrees many hate crimes are not reported for various reasons. They believe the key to overcoming this issue is educational outreach among faith and other community groups. The US Attorney’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and Sacramento FBI Office all have community programs that help to educate the community about their constitutional rights and protections as well as their responsibility as a community member.
