012, A Very Chatty Mystery, Thriller, Suspense and Crime Novel Book Haul

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2023 24:13

So, way back at the end of April, I decided I wanted to start filming regular mystery and thriller novel book hauls on my YouTube Channel and Podcast every month. My aim was to share them here on this blog because I'm a bit of a bibliophile and a game nerd, as you can see by the wall of bookshelves behind me in the video. A Classic Over-Thinker As you can see from the content on this blog, I failed to follow through with my plans to film a monthly thriller novel book haul. Well, I did the book purchasing and put them in piles according to purchase dates, then I kept putting it off because I'm a classic over-thinker. Instead of buying books and then filming myself talking about why I purchased said books, I over-thought the book haul process. I convinced myself that I needed to talk about why I purchased the book and accurately discuss the synopsis and all of those things. In this particular book haul, I've included books in the mystery, thriller, suspense, and crime genres because I write in and most of the books I read are in these genres. But occasionally, I'll read fantasy or historical fiction. In saying that, many of the books I read, regardless of genre, have elements of crime, thriller, and suspense because it's what I love to read. I like something that's fast-paced, but I've started purchasing fantasy novels, but that's for a different haul. In this haul, I'm going to keep it strictly to thrillers because I'm a bit of a mystery novel nerd. About This Book Haul The books that I'm about to show you I purchased during the months of May through to August. At the time of this filming, in September, I hadn't purchased any thriller-related books. My September book purchases had been fantasy, but I'll do a separate haul in the middle of the month and be more on top of my book haul game. Spoiler alert, since it's been a while since the filming of the video and the creation of the blog post, I did manage to buy a couple of thriller novels. What can I say? I couldn't resist. As you can tell from the title of this episode, I'm going to discuss the Agatha Raisin television show on Acorn TV versus the books in order to avoid spoilers, I'm going to focus on how Agatha is portrayed, not the events in the show and novels. Fingers crossed, I stick to my notes and this show remains as spoiler-free as possible. You get it. I've tried to not ruin things for you, but just be aware I could slip up and start talking plot before we get started.I should also point out that I've watched season one and two, but not three because I couldn't purchase it on Amazon prime video--it's only available on the Acorn TV streaming service. Actually, this isn't true anymore. I've caught up since I wrote this script and I'm rewatching season one, but currently, seasons one to four are available. We have finished watching season four and Amazon Prime Video recommended the Quiche of Death, again, which is the pilot episode--it's not officially a part of season one. And I thought, "Ooh, maybe I wanna watch that." Then, I got trapped into watching season one again--the things you do as a podcaster. But I'm glad I did this because it refreshed my memory and it reaffirmed the things that I've said in the script that I still hold to be true. As always, I will endeavour to be as spoiler free as possible. The crime, mystery, and thriller books in this haul were purchased over the last six months of 2019. Yes, some of these books have been sitting in a pile on the floor in my office for eighteen months. What can I say? I'm a chronic procrastinator. Way back in March, I planned on releasing this episode but my husband started working from home and I struggled to figure out how to continue to work with my new workspace colleague, so this podcast went on a hiatus. Well, I thought it would be a short hiatus, but it didn't work out like that much like many other things in 2020. But, back to the books. As you can guess by the spoiler-y title I’m going to discuss 13 crime, mystery, thriller and Suspense novels featuring characters who are journalists. I’ve decided to divide this episode up into two parts, the first is "books I want to read" and the second is "books i’ve read.” My love of characters who are journalists stems from two places. The first is my love of the superman story. And, the second which is directly related to the first is, my love of the hit 90’s TV show, Lois and Clark.  I’m not going to lie, 14 year old me had a huge crush on Dean Cain. Not Dean Cain as Superman but Dean Cain as Clark Kent. What can I say? I love me a nerd. But, I also loved Lois—I could relate to her. She was stubborn, ambitious, and was obsessed with her work. Fourteen year old Amelia wanted to be Lois Lane when she grew up. Honestly, there’s a part of me that still does.     My Personal Tastes in Books This episode originally had sixteen books, but as I was curating this list, I realised that two of the books contained plots centred around the deaths of toddlers or young children. My family has been through the tragedy of loosing an older baby to SIDS when I was five years old. As I’ve grown up, got married, and considered having my own children, I’ve discovered that this event has had a profound affect on me. So, I removed the books from my to be read list, because I will probably find them quite triggering. In general, I tend to stop reading books that feature the investigations of crimes against children and minors under the age of eighteen. I did start reading a book that opened with the aftermath of the death of a young teenage girl and I go the hint that the crime had a sexual element, I immediately closed the book and I have no intention of picking it back up. And, there are certain curse words or racial slang that I can’t handle, so I deleted another book for that reason as well, as other reasons. I’m not saying those three book were bad, they were just not for me. Also, it’s worth pointing out that those books had a significant number of good reviews. So, without further ado, let’s get into my list of books I want to read.     Books I Want to Read See Her Run by Peggy Townsend The Dying Hour by Rick Mofina The Poet by Michael Connelly False truth (Jordan Fox Mystery Series) by Diane Capri and Beth Dexter The Secret Patient by Vaughan W. My family has been through the tragedy of loosing an older baby to SIDS when I was five years old. As I've grown up, got married, and considered having my own children, I've discovered that this event has had a profound affect on me.So, I removed the books from my to be read list, because I will probably find them quite triggering. And, there are certain curse words or racial slang that I can't handle, so I deleted another book for that reason as well, as other reasons.I'm not saying those three book were bad, they were just not for me. Also, it's worth pointing out that those books had a significant number of good reviews. So, without further ado, let's get into my list of books I want to read.  Books I Want to ReadSee Her Run by Peggy TownsendThe Dying Hour by Rick MofinaThe Poet by Michael ConnellyFalse truth (Jordan Fox Mystery Series) by Diane Capri and Beth DexterThe Secret Patient by Vaughan W. As suggested by the title, I’m going to dive into the depths of my Kindle app and share with you the mystery and thriller novels that are lurking and waiting to be read by me. Don’t worry; I’ve managed to narrow this list down to twelve books. While I’m talking about my Kindle app, I will also get a bit nerdy and discuss my organisational habits with you. I also plan to do an episode focused on what’s in my audible library, but I won’t share that next. Why? Because, I realise that there will be several shows in a row focused on my reading habits and I want to start talking about books, because this podcast is supposed to be a virtual book club. But first, I want to discuss my reading goal for 2020. Concluding Thoughts After, you’ve listened to the episode, I have a few questions for you. Do you like to read on a kindle device or kindle app? If so, what’s on it? And, how do you organise your kindle? While, I’m asking lots of questions do you have a reading goal for 2020? Let me know by sharing your thoughts in the comments section on the blog post. Or, if you’re this way inclined, I’ve just set up a Facebook Group for this podcast, so come on over and join in on the discussion after the show. The Facebook group is called The Book Nerd Reader Club. I started it because I thought it would be easier to create discussion on Facebook than under a blog post. For the sake of transparency, the facebook group is so new that it’s just me in the group at the moment. I know it super embarrassing but I’m all alone. For some reason, I think of Home alone when I say that. Thank you for listening and happy reading, everybody. I’ve never been the type of reader who will solely read a single genre of fiction. I’m a little eclectic when it comes to reading. How bad am I?Basically, if the cover pulls me into the story, then I’ll read it. I guess you can say I’m a bibliophile. And that’s why I created this podcast. For those of you who are just like me who are bibliophile’s that will read anything that’s page-turning. What is The Book Nerd Podcast? The Book Nerd is a virtual book club that comes out every second Sunday. Each episode will be a maximum of 20 minutes Long. I wanted to make each show short and be respectful of your time because I get it, you're busy and may not have a spare hour to listen to a podcast or watch a video. It's a relaunch of one of my older podcast, Thriller Novel Nerd that pod-faded at the beginning of 2020, after episode six. To be honest, I felt constrained by the name of the podcast, and the lockdown happened. Since then, I've had a rethink about what I want to achieve, and I figured out how to work from home with my husband, manage my writing and podcasting. So, what's different about this version of the podcast? The main difference between the Book Nerd and Thriller Novel Nerd is I've ditched the video episodes, along with recording stereo. These changes should fix the sound issues. And, I'm now recording in seasons. Each season of the podcast will have thirteen episodes scheduled to go live every two weeks. Figures crossed this will help me to achieve a better writing and podcasting balance.   Who will enjoy this podcast? As suggested by the title, this podcast is for writers and readers who are passionate about the Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense genres. If you love discussing what makes a good thriller novel or are just looking for your next read, then this podcast is for you.   Concluding Thoughts If you love novels within the mystery, thriller, and suspense genres and if this sounds like the podcast for you, then click the subscribe button and listen to the next episode. And, make sure you connect with me on social media.   Thanks for listening. Over on that channel, I have the video version of the podcast as well as behind the scenes vlogs. The other day, I decided to start doing a few tag videos. And, I realised this particular tag would be great for the Thriller Novel Nerd Podcast. So, in this show, I’m going to answer the questions in the book-buying tag and discuss my book buying habits with you. To join in on the discussion come on over to the Thriller Novel Nerd Book Club Facebook group and share your book buying habits with me, under the podcast episode. The Facebook Group is new, and I’m tragically all alone. So come on over and join me. I’ll leave a link to the group in the show notes in your favourite podcasting app. I almost forgot to share this with you. The original creator of the tag is Megan Olivier. She doesn’t have a podcast, but I’ll link her YouTube channel below and a link to the original video.   Here are the questions: Where do you buy your books? Do you ever pre-orders book and if so, do you do this in-store or online? On average, how many books do you buy a month? Do you use your local library? If so, how my books can you or do you borrow at a time? What is your opinion on library books? How do you feel about charity shop or second-hand books? Do you keep your read and TBR pile together on the same bookshelf or not? Do you plan to read all of the books that you own? What do you do with books you own that you feel you will never read or did not enjoy? Have you ever donated books? Have you ever been on a book buying ban? Do you feel that you buy too many books? As you can guess by the spoiler-y title, I’m going to discuss 13 crime, mystery, thriller and Suspense novels featuring characters who are journalists. I’ve decided to divide this episode up into two parts, the first is “books I want to read” and the second is “books I’ve read.”     My love of characters who are journalists stems from two places. The first is my love of the Superman story. And, the second which is directly related to the first, is my love of the hit 90’s TV show, Lois and Clark. I’m not going to lie, fourteen-year-old me had a massive crush on Dean Cain. Not Dean Cain as Superman but Dean Cain as Clark Kent. What can I say? I live me a nerd. But, I also loved Lois—I could relate to her. She was stubborn, ambitious, and was obsessed with her work. Fourteen-year-old Amelia wanted to be Lois Lane when she grew up. Honestly, there’s a part of me that still does.   My Personal Tastes in Books This episode initially had sixteen books, but as I was curating this list, I realised that two of the books contained plots centred around the deaths of toddlers or young children. My family has been through the tragedy of losing an older baby to SIDS when I was five years old.
