Join us for a read by one of Mads' favourite Queens of Crime, with Two-Way Murder, by E. C. R. Lorac. No spoilers- we do not reveal whodunnit. Mystery Business is a debrief on an excellent theatre production we saw in our summer break, Kathy and Stellar Solve a Murder. For TV Tattle, we give our verdict on Episode 1 of Agatha Raisin (called The Quiche of Death), also set in British countryside. We also discuss morris dancing, Mads' disdain for Rime of the Ancient Mariner and a return of the phrase rum. SUKY KHAKH on the differences between the book and the TV series when it comes to detective fiction. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on June 30th 2024. This week's returning guest is SUKY KHAKH who has recently been ill in bed and spent much of that time reading a lot of the sort of books that have been adapted for television which inspired us to want to talk about how satisfying - or otherwise - such adaptations can sometimes be. So during the next hour we'll chat about shows like HAMISH MACBETH, JACK REACHER, AGATHA RAISIN, THE MARLOW MURDER CLUB, FATHER BROWN and BOSCH, amongst others, because he's been doing A LOT of reading. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

About SPLITTING HAIRS Dead Men Tell No Tales Embalmer's assistant Imogene Lynch may or may not get the final sensations of the dead when she touches their hair. She used to, but something strange is going on. Her sixth sense disappears when the body of a local treasure hunter shows up at Greener Pastures Mortuary. But that doesn't keep her from becoming embroiled in two bone-chilling mysteries. Her boss's lover is awol, and a tipsy ghost is giving her the hiccups. Someone's obviously been murdered. She dearly hopes it's not the missing woman. All clues lead to Catalina Island where rumors of a pirate's buried treasure seem to have incited a gold rush. When Imogene stumbles into a viper's nest, she discovers the dead aren't the only ones with secrets. So join me and Agatha and her reliable crew in Carsely as she attempts to solve the mystery of a body that disappeared, and discover what connection it has with ice cream, a naturist society and drug smuggling...it's a doozy, but did it impress me? Remember, there will be no spoilers, I am not going to tell you whodunnit and I certainly won't be revealing who gets to go home with Agatha at the end of the night, though I have my preferences! I couldn't stay away from Carsely, so I decided that I wouldn't. With a whole series to choose from I decided to return to the small Cotswold Village with book 31 in the series, Hot to Trot. Agatha and Charles are in trouble, and it's not the fun kind. Charles's new and admittedly unbearable young wife, Mary, has been found dead and of course, CI Wilkes is placing Agatha on the suspect list. Agatha knows that she has to solve the murder before Charles is jailed for killing his bride...but the suspect list is long and time is growing short. With the help of her friends, she will find out who killed Lady Mary and get an innocent man free before things go even more wrong. Find out what I thought about this 2020 cosy mystery release, and you know I won't reveal the ending! What can I say? Agatha Raisin keeps on drawing me back in and when I got approved for the latest addition to the series I wasn't sure whether it would be a topic I chose or if I would just write a review and talk about something else. The 34th book in the Agatha Raisin series was released on the 19th of September and though still published under the name MC Beaton, the baton has been taken up by co-writer RW Green. So, what does that mean for our beloved Agatha and her friends in Carsley? Hickory Dickory Dock, the clock struck one, the mouse ran down... Who hasn't heard this rhyme? Agatha Christie was a fan of them, even though the rhyme has little connection to the story on this particular occasion. This week I am taking a look at this novel written by Christie in 1955, it is the 30th of 39 Hercule Poirot novels and includes murder, drug smuggling and an unusual case of kleptomania. But can the Belgian detective solve the crime before it's too late? You won't get any spoilers from me, but it's an intriguing book nonetheless. Delicacy by Katy Wix is a memoir with a difference. It's not written in a linear way, but that makes it an interesting read. A comedienne best known for shows like Miranda, Not Going Out and Agatha Raisin, there is so much more to her than I had realised. The events that take place are eye-opening and sad at the same time. It's a book that many will relate to, whether it's the recounting of school bullying or the complicated relationship with food.

As you can tell from the title of this episode, I'm going to discuss the Agatha Raisin television show on Acorn TV versus the books in order to avoid spoilers, I'm going to focus on how Agatha is portrayed, not the events in the show and novels. Fingers crossed, I stick to my notes and this show remains as spoiler-free as possible. You get it. I've tried to not ruin things for you, but just be aware I could slip up and start talking plot before we get started.I should also point out that I've watched season one and two, but not three because I couldn't purchase it on Amazon prime video--it's only available on the Acorn TV streaming service. Actually, this isn't true anymore. I've caught up since I wrote this script and I'm rewatching season one, but currently, seasons one to four are available. We have finished watching season four and Amazon Prime Video recommended the Quiche of Death, again, which is the pilot episode--it's not officially a part of season one. And I thought, "Ooh, maybe I wanna watch that." Then, I got trapped into watching season one again--the things you do as a podcaster. But I'm glad I did this because it refreshed my memory and it reaffirmed the things that I've said in the script that I still hold to be true. On top of this, I'm also hoping to keep this as a short episode. So without further ado, let's get into the episodeShow Notes, Podcasts, and Tools MentionedShow NotesAgatha Raisin TV Series on Acorn TVAgatha Raisin TV Series 1 on Amazon Prime Video *Join The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook GroupGot an idea for a podcast episode? Murray - Murder in the Master(Level Best Books). It isn't the first time real estate agent Helen Morrisey has found someone naked in bed while showing a house. But this one is different. One glance at the bluish cast around his lips and the vacant, staring eyes, and Helen knows developer Al Capelli is never going to sign another sales agreement. His death is big news for a small Chesapeake water town where a family empire is built around secrets and their brash money style is resented by locals. Within days, his lover, her old friend, begs Helen to find the killer before she's arrested for murder. Helen quickly realizes that solving a murder mystery in real life is a lot more dangerous than reading one. She decides to create her own Detection Club of expert sleuths-Miss Marple, Jessica Fletcher, Nora Charles, Agatha Raisin, and, yes, Nancy Drew to help unearth the truth.Detective Joe McAlister recognizes Helen's insight into back office real estate deals and local players. And for the first time since her husband's death, Helen meets a man who might return zingers as quick as she tosses them out. Mystery lovers hungry for a smart gutsy woman, a fast-moving plot, and an insider's look into a business everyone talks about, but few understand, will devour this first in a series.Jan Brogan - The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston's Struggle for Justice (Bright Leaf Press). At the end of the 1976 football season, more than forty Harvard athletes went to Boston's Combat Zone to celebrate. In the city's adult entertainment district, drugs and prostitution ran rampant, violent crime was commonplace, and corrupt police turned the other way. At the end of the night, Italian American star athlete Andy Puopolo, raised in the city's North End, was murdered in a stabbing. Three African American men were accused of the crime. His murder made national news and led to the eventual demise of the city's red-light district.Starting with this brutal murder, The Combat Zone tells the story of the Puopolo family's struggle with both a devastating loss and a criminal justice system that produced two trials with opposing verdicts, all within the context of a racially divided Boston. Brogan traces the contentious relationship between Boston's segregated neighborhoods during the busing crisis; shines a light on a court system that allowed lawyers to strike potential jurors based purely on their racial or ethnic identity; and lays bare the deep-seated corruption within the police department and throughout the Combat Zone. What emerges is a fascinating snapshot of the city at a transitional moment in its recent past.Product Details About the Author

In my last Bookshop episode, I took a trip to the Cotswolds and introduced you to Agatha Raisin. So I figured that now would be a great opportunity to introduce you to Agatha's inspiration in the form of the character I believe to be Agatha Christie's greatest creation (though everyone has their favourite), Miss Jane Marple. The Murder at the Vicarage was published in 1930 and serves as the official introduction to St Mary Mead and the village's most observant resident, Jane Marple, who, until the brutal killing of a rather distasteful resident, has used her skills to solve simple mysteries that keep everyone amused. Did I like it? Did I remember the killer? Give this episode a listen to find out whether I will be making another trip in the future. Also, if you're an eager reader, do you have a physical TBR list? Would love to know how you keep track of what you plan on reading next. Get in touch and let me know.

Whether you love Miss Marple or Murder, She Wrote, you'll be familiar with the genre of cosy mysteries. And if you, like me, love them, then you'll probably enjoy Agatha Raisin's inaugural adventure as she adjusts to country living in the Carsely, a small village in the middle of the Cotswolds. Picturesque and full of old-country charm, there is a bit of darkness in the centre. Think PG-rated Hot Fuzz (no don't!). If you're anything like me, then this is the perfect Sunday afternoon read. It may be a brand new genre, but if you've seen even one episode of Murder, She Wrote and solved the crime along with Jessica, then give Agatha a try.

In honor of Tartan Day we bring you three Scottish mystery writers to check out.Murder in a Scottish Shire (A Scottish Shire Mystery #1)by Traci Hall Known as the Brighton of the North, Nairn is both a charming Scottish town and a popular seaside resort—but to Paislee Shaw, it's simply home—unfortunately to a murderer . . . For a twenty-eight-year-old single mum, Paislee has knit together a sensible life for herself, her ten-year-old son Brody, and Wallace, their black Scottish terrier. Having inherited a knack for knitting from her dear departed grandmother, Paislee also owns a specialty sweater shop called Cashmere Crush, where devoted local crafters gather weekly for her Knit and Sip. Lately, though, Paislee feels as if her life is unraveling. She’s been served an eviction notice, and her estranged and homeless grandfather has just been brought to her door by a disconcertingly handsome detective named Mack Zeffer. As if all that wasn't enough, Paislee discovers a young woman who she recently rehired to help in the shop dead in her flat, possibly from an overdose of her heart medicine. But as details of the death and the woman’s life begin to raise suspicions for Detective Inspector Zeffer, it’s Paislee who must untangle a murderous yarn . . .A Song for the Dark Times (Inspector Rebus #23)by Ian Rankin "He’s gone…" When his daughter Samantha calls in the dead of night, John Rebus knows it’s not good news. Her husband has been missing for two days. Rebus fears the worst – and knows from his lifetime in the police that his daughter will be the prime suspect. He wasn’t the best father – the job always came first – but now his daughter needs him more than ever. But is he going as a father or a detective? As he leaves at dawn to drive to the windswept coast – and a small town with big secrets – he wonders whether this might be the first time in his life where the truth is the one thing he doesn’t want to find.and last but not leastM.C. BEATON has won international acclaim for her bestselling Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin mysteries. She is also the author of over 100 romance titles and a series of romantic suspense, The Edwardian Mystery Series. Sadly She passed away early last year.Hamish has a reputation for laziness. He loves the town of Lochdubh (meaning 'black lake' (loch) in Gaelic and pronounced Lokh-DOO) and is content and at peace with his life and lacks ambition. Of great concern to Hamish and his fellow villagers is the threat of possible closure of Lochdubh's police station,[1][2] something his superior and archenemy, Chief Inspector Blair, would like to see. Hamish avoids promotion, occasionally even deliberately destroying attempts to give him recognition for his accomplishments. His position as "local bobby," sees him sometimes left out of official investigations and he must often work outside official channels, as the detectives from neighbouring Strathbane CID do not appreciate his help. Despite this, it is Hamish's natural "Highland curiosity" and local knowledge and intuition that combine to solve crimes.Early in the series, Hamish has an on-again, off-again romance with Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, the daughter of a wealthy local landowner. The romance ultimately ends in a broken engagement because of her sexual coldness; thereafter, his luck with women, including Elspeth Grant, a reporter with whom he has a relationship, continues to be poor. Hamish is very attached to his pets, first his dog Towser, then in later books his dog Lugs (Scots for "ears") and a "domesticated" wildcat named Sonsie (Scots for "cheeky").Hamish is tall and thin. He has hazel eyes and long eyelashes and fiery red hair.

Feedback The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud and Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (rec’d by Kelly) Questions 1. Hi, I’m Ben, I love the podcast! I wasn’t sure how to ask for a suggestion, so I’m emailing.  I recently read Stuart Turton’s “Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” and “The Devil in the Dark Water” and am trying to find more genre bending books like those. My preferences are pretty open, though I try to stay away from YA. I do love that the aforementioned books involve a complicated mystery, but the mystery aspect isn’t as important as the genre blending. Thank you for your help! P.s. your podcast has helped open my mind with the variety of books that y’all discuss, thanks for that.  -Ben 2. It’s been a rough year (for everyone), and I am struggling to really see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m looking for a read without too much trauma on the page that imagines a better future/society. That’s pretty open-ended, but I enjoy so much of what gets recommended on the show that I trust y’all to run with it! Thank you for all you do; you’re getting me through all this shit.  -Diana 3. Hello! On your most recent episode (the final one in 2020), one or both of you mentioned reading more nonfiction books than usual this year. I haven’t gotten into nonfiction much, but would like to read more of it. So I was wondering – what were your favorite nonfiction books that you read in 2020? Thanks! Love the show! -Kathleen 4. Meet globetrotting psychologist and sleuth Cait Morgan. Cathy Ace had the great good fortune to travel the world during her corporate career. Which is lucky for us because her Cait Morgan mysteries are each set in a different location that Cathy has lived in or spent time in. The Corpse with the Crystal Skull is set in Jamaica and as we're all mostly confined to barracks these days, it's great to hear about sunny places far away, and vacationing with friends. In my interview with Cathy she mentions two mystery sites that she blogs for. 7CriminalMinds.blogspot.com features authors, including Cathy and two previous It's a Mystery podcast guests (Frank Zafiro and Terry Shames), answering questions about crime fiction, writing, publishing, and life. And KillerCharacters.com has a focus on cozy mysteries with a different author writing a post each day. Cathy posts on the 22nd of each month. This week's mystery author Cathy Ace’s Welsh-Canadian criminal psychologist sleuth Cait Morgan has encountered traditional, closed-circle puzzle plot whodunits in eight books, with a ninth being published in June 2020. This series of books has now been optioned for television by Free@Last TV, a UK production company. The plan is to present each book as a 90 minute made-for-TV movie, the same format used for the international hit ACORN series featuring MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin, which is made my Free@Last TV. Cathy's other series of books - The WISE Enquiries Agency Mysteries - feature a quartet of softly-boiled female PIs who solve quintessentially British cases from their stately home-based office in rural Wales. Her standalone novel of psychological suspense, The Wrong Boy, is set in Wales, and became a #1 amazon bestseller. Shortlisted for the Bony Blithe Award three times in four years, winning in 2015, she’s also been shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story. Cathy was born and raised in Wales, though she now lives in Canada.  To learn more about Cathy and all her books visit CathyAce.com Press play (above) to listen to the show, or read the transcript below. Remember you can also subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts. And listen on Stitcher, Android, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, and Spotify. Except from The Corpse with the Crystal Skull Breakfast and a Body  The conversation around the breakfast table was understandably muted; we’d all had a late night, and I, for one, was feeling the effects of a few too many G and Ts. My darling husband, Bud, surveyed the food arranged on the mahogany sideboard with bleary eyes. His more-salt-than-pepper hair was still damp from the shower, but he was already sweating through his shirt; May in Jamaica can be exhaustingly humid.  “Anybody want another mango? Or this last piece of banana bread?” Bud’s tone lacked enthusiasm.  John Silver shook his head above his coffee cup, then scrunched his eyes, suggesting he wished he hadn’t made such a rash move. “Thanks, no,” he croaked, with a polite smile I read as a grimace.  He looked tired; wiped out, in fact. I’d first met him when he’d helped out with a family matter in Amsterdam that Bud and I had been looking into, less than a year earlier; back then he’d looked vigorous, and in his prime. Now? He’d aged. A lot. I wondered why. Maybe it was work-related; I’m still not entirely sure what he does – he somehow provides coordination between a number of secret service operations around the world…lots of opportunities there for stress, I’d have thought. He looked as though he needed the week-long break he was just beginning with us.  “Anyone fancy a Caesar?” Bud’s other ex-colleague, Jack White, forced a smile; they’d served together in the Vancouver Police Department for years, forging a friendship that had endured beyond their respective retirements. Jack glanced at his wife with a wink, rubbed a hand through his rapidly thinning hair, and groaned.

Scottish comedian and presenter, Fred MacAuley delves into M.C. Beatons extraordinary career. Marion Chesney is known primarily for the more than 100 historical romance novels. M.C. Beaton is the pseudonym she reserves for crime fiction, including the much-loved Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth novels. Born in Glasgow, she was a bookseller, theatre critic and fashion editor before joining the Scottish Daily Express, where she mostly reported crime. A move to Fleet Street followed with the Daily Express before leaving for America, working for The Star in New York. She took up writing romances to spend more time with her son. A holiday in Sutherland at a fishing school inspired her first Hamish Macbeth story. Beaton returned to Scotland, where husband Harry reared black sheep, before a move to the Cotswolds, which inspired the brilliant Agatha Raisin. Special Guests: M.C. Beaton In Conversation With Fred MacAuley was recorded live at Harrogate International Festivals' Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in July 2015.

Meredith and Kaytee are giddying up with a new episode of spicy opinions. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a new, most favorite ever, local bookshop win, and a triumphant return to the library. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There’s a whole slew of goodness in here, as well as a plea for a certain title from a certain author, and reflections on re-reading a decades-old favorite. We’ve got a brief Slow But Steady update to share with you and then it’s onward to our deep dive. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about cozy mysteries. Why read them? What makes a mystery cozy? What are Meredith’s favorite titles in the canon? Do they require baking and puns? Inquiring minds need to know. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got a tale reminiscent of the old west and a fun bookish fictional title that we both adore. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down!  *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links.
