Two exhausted spacemen gamble their lives on an impossible return from Venus while an isolated outpost waits for rescue that may never come. As Earth races closer by the second, one reckless landing idea stands between them and a fireball over the Pacific. Message from Venus by Russ Winterbotham. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Although he isn't remembered as a major contributor to science fiction Russ Winterbotham's career lasted more than three decades. He wrote seven novels and more than 60 short stories beginning in 1935.Winterbotham was paid $44.55 for the story back in 1941. Adjusted for inflation that would be about $570 today. How do we know how much he was paid? Comet magazine paid a penny per word for every story it published. Which may not seem like a lot but two competing science fiction magazines that got their start about the same time didn't pay anything at all. Those two magazines combined for only seven issues before they ceased publication. Russ Winterbotham's story was published in the January 1941 issue of Comet magazine which lasted for only 5 issues. This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. We're back with another commentary track, this time for a movie by a director we almost covered: David Cronenberg. His 1988 identical twin gynecologist horror-tragedy DEAD RINGERS deals with all kinds of themes we love: the nature of the self, of experience, of the body, of morality. It's also got the guy from Soderbergh's KAFKA and the lady from TIGHTROPE and OBSESSION. Listen to this along with the film or just listen on its own - it works either way, in our opinion! "Dead Ringers" by Ron Rosenbaum & Susan Edmiston Thanks as always to Jetski for our theme music and Jeremy Allison for our artwork.

We're talking all about Survivor's 50th Season Premiere because I got invited to be a part of a Q&A panel for the show tonight with former stars of Survivor! Guess being on Fox's The Floor finally paid off, eh? Huge thanks to Matt Bischoff and Little Miami Brewing for putting this together. I brought in Lucky, as he's the biggest Survivor fan that I know; we talked about the show, we talked a little strategy, but we REALLY talked about all kinds of fun international fruits that we tried here. Turns out, we should learn a little more about picking ripe fruit before the show starts! Along the way, we get off on some delightful tangents leading into me giving one of my classic passionate speeches about media criticism framed around great games and movies like Red Dead Redemption 2, and the original Ninja Turtles franchise. I can't stop looking at my dog Morison, who is a DEAD RINGER for Master Splinter, and saying "All fathers care for their sons." Anyway, it's another fun one from us, it's silly, and we tried a lot of fruit. "This is the wettest the podcast has ever been, and you can quote me on that" - Mark Borison

In this spoiler-filled review, we break down Dead Ringer by Chris Hauty, a political thriller centered on JFK assassination conspiracy theories, Cold War espionage, and modern intelligence operations. We analyze the full plot, major twists, and dual-protagonist structure, dig into how the novel reimagines the JFK conspiracy, and discuss what works, what strains credibility, and how Dead Ringer compares to other conspiracy-driven thrillers. If you enjoy political thrillers, CIA intrigue, historical conspiracies, and deep spoiler discussions, this episode goes all in.—
On today's Radio Night Live: Fun Friday! Christiani Pitts, star of the Broadway play: Two Strangers (Carry a Cake across New York); & John Nimick, President at Squash Engine, Inc. & Event Producer of Sprott Tournament of Champions presented by Crowd Street ABOUT CHRISTIANI: In Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), Christiani Pitts plays Robin, a 26-year-old New Yorker struggling to find meaning while stuck in an unfulfilling, monotonous routine. Pitts was drawn to the role of Robin because of the character's relatable experience of depression, which the actress appreciates for not being over-explained in the production. Pitts' Broadway debut in A Bronx Tale, beginning as an ensemble member before taking over the co-starring role of Jane, was followed by the leading role of Ann Darrow in King Kong. She made history as the first woman of color to play Darrow, working to flesh out the character traditionally depicted as a damsel-in-distress archetype. Now, following the pandemic and the birth of her first child, Zora Makena, Pitts is back as one half of the two-hander musical rom-com Two Strangers with co-star, Sam Tutty. Currently, she recurred on Starz's Power Book III: “Raising Kanan” and starred in the Netflix feature Resort To Love. Her other credits include: Dead Ringers, “Blue Bloods,” “The Good Fight,” “Evil,” “Elementary.” Christiani is repped by Buchwald Talent and Authentic Talent & Literary Management. ABOUT TWO STRANGERS (Carry a Cake Across New York) Meet Dougal, an impossibly upbeat Brit who has just landed in New York City for the first time to attend the wedding of the father he's never met. Meet Robin, the sister of the bride and a no-nonsense New Yorker with a lot of errands to do for the bride—including picking up the groom's estranged son from the airport. These two strangers begin their journey together navigating New York City, secrets, and second chances. ABOUT JOHN: Nimick began playing pro squash in the 1980s, when hardball squash was growing in the U.S., though the sport wasn't played in arenas and received relatively little press coverage. John achieved a ranking of No. 2 on the World Professional Squash Tour in 1990-91 and won four “Grand Slam” singles squash titles during his professional career. John also won the Intercollegiate Singles title, U.S. National Singles title and numerous other singles and doubles championships. Nimick is now the president of sports marketing company Squash Engine, the leading promoter of international squash. Nimick's comprehensive, value-driven approach to sports championship and entertainment management quickly established Squash Engine as the leading promoter in international squash and enabled his forerunner company Event Engine to provide similar services to the tennis, golf and classical and popular music markets. His company is known for hosting squash championships in non-traditional venues. Its tentpole event, the Tournament of Champions, is held in New York City's Grand Central Terminal. Now, the “ToC” is the largest squash spectator tournament in the world. ABOUT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: The Tournament of Champions can trace its distinguished international squash lineage back to 1930 when it was first staged as the “U.S. Professional.” In the late 70's it became the World Professional Squash Championships and then the Tournament of Champions in 1992. A women's invitational draw was added to the event in 2001 with a full championship draw added in 2002-2003, 2005-2007 and 2012 forward. The tournament is the oldest, annual competition for squash professionals in the world. The list of titleholders is a veritable “who's who” of squash through the years. The tournament has been played in 17 different cities but is now closely identified with its majestic Grand Central Terminal venue where the ToC was first presented in 1995.
Stuart Maconie's tiptoeing the line between dark and light in this week's Loose Ends. When she won Strictly Jill Halfpenny got the highest ever score for her sequin studded jive, but there's not a glitterball to be seen in her latest role as the traumatised mum Eve in the dark psychological thriller Girl Taken, which also stars Alfie Allen as the creepiest teacher you'd never hope to meet. Ian Smith is a comedian who mines his own anxieties for his art - be that his Radio 4 series called "Ian Smith is Stressed", the unintentionally hilarious news from his hometown in the Northern News Podcast or his new tour, "Footspa Half Empty".The comic, actor and Dead Ringers impressionist Jess Robinson's very funny and also very sad new memoir contrasts her own twentysomething exploits as a stage ingenue with her Jewish Grandmother's diaries at the same age - Life Is Rosi: Grandma, Me and Our Diaries at 23. Grandma Rosi loved music, boyfriends and having a laugh too but was enduring Germany during the rise of Hitler at the same time. And as they head out on tour, we have performance from The Charlatan's new album We Are Love. Christiani Pitts stops by to chat about her journey from playing a scene stealing cow in a church nativity play to leading Broadway blockbusters. She shares a hilarious story about how a miscommunication led to her performing stand up comedy at a nightclub at age eleven for an event associated with Dave Chappelle, and how her parents supported her dreams while navigating the tricky world of early industry scams. We dive deep into her experience starring in King Kong, discussing the technical insanity of acting opposite a massive puppet and how she manifested doing an action movie on stage. She also opens up about her current role in Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), exploring how the show handles mental health with subtle physicality, the "simplistically complex" set design, and the joy of balancing life as a Broadway star and a mom to a daughter who thinks she is also in the cast. Christiani Pitts is a history making performer who received critical acclaim playing Anne Darrow in the Broadway production of King Kong. After previously starring as Jane in A Bronx Tale, she played Beverly in the Netflix romantic comedy Resort to Love and starred as Pernessa in Power Book III: Raising Kanan, with additional credits including Elementary, Evil, The Good Fight, Blue Bloods, and Dead Ringers. She is currently starring as Robin in the new Broadway musical Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). Set in present-day, a disgraced former Secret Service office and a Jesuit professor join forces to delve into the mysteries surrounding the events of November 22, 1963. Fixated on deciphering the conspiracies behind the history-changing assassination, they are oblivious to the fact that the cabal is still active—and may face an end as bloody as the carnage in Dealey Plaza. Will they be able to uncover the truth in time? Or will they become two more footnotes in history? Chris Hauty was born in 1956 in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Delaware, a geographic and cultural relocation made more tolerable by virtue of his relative youth and an obsession with Greek mythology. He graduated from Reed College, in Portland, Oregon, then moved to New York, where he supported his playwriting habit as a bike messenger and graphic artist. His plays produced Off-Off-Broadway included South of American Business and Shut Eye, Big Mouth. The sale of his first screenplay, Don Coyote, to 20th Century Fox prompted a move to Los Angeles. Employed for the last thirty years as a screenwriter, he has worked for every major movie studio, in nearly all genres, and in collaboration with Hollywood professionals ranging from Mel Gibson to Jessica Alba. #chrishauty #authorpodcast #speakingofwriterspodcast #podcast

Greg and Jenius kick off a new month of goodies with Deadcember and they start with 1988's Dead Ringers!
Jan Ravens, the acclaimed impressionist at the heart of Dead Ringers, grew up learning to change the mood of a room long before she ever changed her voice on stage. In this conversation with James O Brien, she reflects on a childhood shaped by humour, instability and her father's illness, and how those early pressures sharpened the instincts that later defined her career. She traces the journey from school impressions to Cambridge Footlights, becoming the first woman to direct its revue, and the leap from Carrott's Lib to Spitting Image and beyond. Jan talks candidly about ambition, class, resilience and the unexpected power of comedy to steady you when life feels uncertain. It is an honest, warm and often very funny look at how she found her place in British satire.Find out more about Dead Ringers 25th Anniversary tour here

Dia Duit agus Fáilte Hello & Welcome mo charasIn this episode, I explore old Irish mourning traditions, drawing from my visits to the Ulster Folk Museum and the Doagh Famine Village. I speak about the wake customs, the keeners, and the cultural roots behind these rituals, honouring how our ancestors held grief as a communal, sacred experience.Throughout the episode, I share a heart-chakra candle blessing, gentle drumming, and my own short keening-style lament at the end — offered not as performance, but as remembrance. This episode creates a soft space where grief is honoured, witnessed, and held, rather than something to fix or rush through.A grounded journey into Irish heritage, healing, and the sacredness of mourning.Timestamps 00:24 Introduction 02:59 Remembrance Candle Blessing02:54 Lighting Remembrance Candle 03:31 Heart chakra Bowl & Candle 04:16 Remembrance Candle & Drumming 05:51 Bean Chaoineadh - Keening Woman 06:47 Keening Explained 13:03 Old Irish Wake Set Up13:22 Old Irish Wake Explained 15:13 Dead Ringer 16:45 Other Old Irish Traditions (mirrors/clocks)17:45 Snuff At The Irish Wake 19:51 Poitín Irish Moonshine 21:51 Reflections on Irish Wake Traditions 26:58 Touching On My Grief Experience 34:48 Final Blessing 36:08 Keening Song Translation 36:42 My Keening Song If you'd like to watch the full video version of this episode, it's up now on my YouTube — Temple of Hazehttps://www.youtube.com/@TempleofHazeSlán go fóill - Bye for nowHazel

David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist who creates a teleportation process using telepods. Geena Davis, who was Goldblum's real-life partner during the filming, plays the ambitious journalist Veronica who falls in love with Brundle. Coming in at approximately an hour and 36 minutes, Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 movie (which was based on a 1957 short story) packs a lot in, getting right to the mad scientist's lab then plenty of body horror, experiments with flesh, and a bizarre transformation. Brundle, who teleports himself during a drunken pity party, did so with a fly on board. Since the computer doesn't know what to do with these two separate entities, it fuses them, resulting in Brundlefly, and utter tragedy. Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, talks about what makes Cronenberg's The Fly so memorable and why unhappy endings are the best kind.-Daisy Koenig, a graduate of Winthrop University's design program, is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Charleston, SC. Would you choose to have an identical twin? Someone who looked so much like you, that even your own mother couldn't always tell the two of you apart? Someone whom friends and even lovers couldn't distinguish you from? Someone who experienced the world in a way so similar to your own, that no one else could ever possibly be able to relate to you quite like they could. Could be fun! But as you'll see... it could be also dangerous. For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com
