Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is a thrilling reimagining of the classic detective tale, blending high-octane action with sharp wit. Robert Downey Jr. delivers a captivating performance as the eccentric detective, while Jude Law's portrayal of Watson provides a perfect balance of logic and loyalty. The film's dynamic visuals and fast-paced editing breathe new life into Victorian London, making it feel both vibrant and dangerous. On this episode of the daily, I'm interviewing, mystery, author and thriller author Sonny Hudson. He tells us all about his books. He's currently written five books. Four out of those books is a series based on the Jessica Jansen novels and he's currently working on a sixth book. You can find all of his books through Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Noble online. And also, Amazon. You could also find his books to Kindle Unlimited and also Kindle. He has them in Hardback covers paperback and Kindle. His Website is: sonnyhudsonauthor.I've spent my entire career in the technology industry, and while that may seem like it's a million miles away from writing fiction, it was actually a job that I had back in ancient times (a.k.a, the 90's) that sparked my interest. At the time I was working for a Fortune 10 company providing pre-sales technical support to our (thousands) of sales people around the globe, and one of my team's responsibilities was producing a bi-monthly newsletter. This was not the typical little 2-3 page newsletter: each issue was between 36-56 pages. Writing and co-editing articles for this newsletter quickly became my favorite part of the job, and everything else quickly started to feel like an interruption of my writing. Each issue was distributed to approximately 5,000 people, and it was consistently recognized and awarded for its excellence.Once the writing bug was unleashed, I wanted to write a full-length novel and finally accomplished that goal in 2008 when I wrote and published 'Let the Truth Be Told', a political-action thriller that readers compared to David Baldacci, Robert Ludlum, Brad Thor, and Tom Clancy. I was very happy with the reviews and resultant sales, not to mention the learning opportunities as I made my first foray into the book world.I currently reside in Williamsburg, VA and I'm a member of James River Writers (Richmond, VA) and actively participate in their workshops and learning activities to improve my writing and industry knowledge. I continue to pursue my writing and am passionate about creating more stories and characters, and I'm currently working on the outlines for two new manuscripts. The first book in my new ‘Jessica Jansen Thriller' series, ‘The Murder Game', was released in December, 2022 and became a hit! The second book in the series, ‘Glitz. Glamour. Murder.' was released in the fall of 2023, and that was followed by ‘Blood & Vengeance' in September, 2024. My latest release, ‘Divine Deception - Blind Faith. False Hope' will be released on Tuesday, November 18th, 2025 for hardback & paperback; Kindle & KU versions hit the market on Tuesday, October 21st. If you're a fan of crime thrillers by authors like David Baldacci, James Patterson, Lincoln Child, J.D. Robb, and Stuart Woods, you'll likely love the ‘Jessica Jansen Thriller' series!

E632 - Shelley Grandy - Devious Web - A bingeworthy mystery thriller through business and politicsShelley Grandy, Canadian author of the tech‑thriller Devious Web, joins the show to talk about her path from journalism and corporate communications into fiction, and how her real‑world experience in high‑tech and politics shaped the novel. Born in Timmins and now living in Trenton, Ontario, Shelley spent years as a reporter and then as a writer in the telecom and fibre‑optics world, eventually running her own PR firm. That background in data, networks, and media handling feeds directly into Devious Web, which follows Tom Oliver, a Toronto tech CEO whose data‑analytics company becomes the center of a dangerous conspiracy just as he's about to sell to a Silicon Valley buyer. The story weaves together business intrigue, family tensions, politics, and a homicide investigation led by Tom's detective friend, with Shelley using interviews and media moments in the book to naturally explain complex technology and U.S. issues like gerrymandering for general readers.Shelley also opens up about the reality of being a debut novelist later in life: finishing the manuscript isn't the finish line, it's the starting gun. She describes the emotional and practical challenges of claiming the title “author,” battling imposter syndrome, and then having to learn social media, build a website, start a newsletter, and get comfortable showing up in public to market the book. For someone used to writing behind the scenes, events like speaking at the National Women's Show in Toronto, experimenting with Instagram, and nurturing an email list are all part of what she calls “The Journey”—the ongoing process she chronicles on her blog. Her training as a journalist still shapes her fiction: she writes in tight, scene‑based chapters that she can easily imagine on screen, focuses on strong openings, and then has to consciously slow down to add colour, atmosphere, and richer description.A big part of the conversation dives into how Devious Web blends entertainment with timely themes. Shelley talks about drawing on her long‑standing interest in U.S. politics—especially the Trump era and debates over democracy—to bring gerrymandering, data analytics, and the misuse of personal information into the plot without turning the book into a lecture. She explains gerrymandering in plain language, connects it to modern data‑driven targeting, and hints at how the wrong hands using the right software could tip the balance of power, all while keeping the focus on mystery, character, and suspense. The book also reflects her personal passions: there's a romantic subplot, horses and equestrian life, Canadian settings she knows intimately (from Toronto restaurants and banks to Honey Harbour and Caledon stables), and vivid secondary characters like Patrick, the charming Irish “bad boy” whose Las Vegas misadventures were especially fun for her to write. Shelley even shares how she fact‑checked locations after the pandemic by revisiting them in person, turning research into a kind of mini‑adventure.https://www.shelleygrandy.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

I've written in several genres, formats and mediums over the years. Each has its own requirements, expectations and parameters: short stories, novellas (generally under 40,000 words), novels, poetry, screenplays, television scripts, and stage plays. For now let's focus on some working definitions for genre fiction, nonfiction, and biography/autobiography. For that past 15 years I've written primarily mysteries, thrillers, and some horror/supernatural fiction. I've also written countless blog posts, columns and articles, but that's for another day and would require more words than most people want to read on this, so let's narrow it down. Note that a lot of these apply to the genres in any form: movies, stories, TV shows, books and more.

Author and accomplished musician Nick Greenberg welcomes readers into the heart of Cincinnati, where pierogi slinging food truck chef Anton Cherny is about to make a series of bad decisions in the new book The Culinary Caper. When readers meet Anton, he is up to his eyeballs in debt and desperate to find a way out of his dire situation. Enter Ricky, Anton's old art school buddy, who has concocted a daring solution: art thievery. The plan is straightforward. While catering parties for members of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals teams, who are unknowingly buying priceless works of previously pilfered art, Anton and Ricky swap out the paintings with forgeries, then return the originals to the insurance company for the generous reward money. Easy-peasy, until Anton discovers that his new girlfriend is the daughter of a ruthless Russian mob boss. Adding to his plateful of anxieties are the emotional and financial strains of supporting a son he's never met, fielding threats from a Tolstoy-quoting loan shark, and mounting tension with his food truck partner. Will Chef Anton have to face the reality that his goose is cooked? Or can he employ his culinary expertise to prevail over the multifaceted morass in which he finds himself? The Culinary Caper is part of a highly entertaining three-book series from Greenberg that blends equal measures of food, music, humor, crime and romance with eccentric characters and unlikely escapades. In the story, Annie Bustamante, a celebrated filmmaker and comic book artist, gets a chance to work on her favorite superhero, The Lethal Lynx. Despite her excitement, she's wary of the offer, and her suspicions grow when she receives anonymous warnings not to trust anyone. The novel also explores Annie as a single mother with a precocious teenage daughter who has a tumultuous relationship with her own mother. Laurie Dove is a do-er. She likes to keep busy. Alongside writing for numerous places like CNN, Animal Planet, the LA Business Journal, and many more, Laurie was elected local Mayor back in 2015, has a Masters Degree from Harvard, and has just published 'Mask of the Deer Woman'.It tells the story of Carrie Starr. Once a detective in Chicago, Carrie has hit rock-bottom after a personal tragedy and returned to the reservation in which she grew up to be their local Marshal. When a college student goes missing, Carrie must wrestle with the reasons why her own daughter disappeared. We discuss why Laurie has found time to write for pleasure when she makes money writing for other people, also how she dealt with the ambiguity of magical realism, and why she likes to sneak up on the story. You can hear how fiction comes from character, how hard it is to find an organic ending to the first novel in a series, and why the only way to find out how to write novels... is to write novels. This week's episode is sponsored by the 'Charley Scott Mysteries', by Vanessa Westermann. Gareth Rubin is back with one of the few Sherlock Holmes books officially authorised and certified by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle estate. It's called 'Holmes and Moriarty', and tells the story of two of fiction's greatest adversaries being forced to form an alliance, to face a threat bigger than anything that's gone before. It's Gareth's 4th published novel, coming after 'Liberation Square', 'The Winter Agent', and 'The Turnglass'. They're high-concept historical thrillers that twist the way stories are told. We talk about the pressure of writing a Holmes story, and how concerned he was with getting the small details correct. You can hear how he went about planning the clues, the tricks and the mystery, and why he has to escape to somewhere incredibly dull to write. Also we discuss how, surprisingly, for a published author... Gareth doesn't enjoy writing. He likes being published... but not the act of getting words down. It's your last chance to get 10% off Writer's Rising 2024, one of the biggest writing retreats of the year.
