JOHN LINCOLN (WILLIAMS) chats to Paul Burke about his new novel GREY IN THE DARK, a journey in American crime fiction, CLR James and South Wales. GREY IN THE DARK: Too many people loved Kelly Rowland. One of them killed her, but was it the man in prison for her murder? Gethin Grey and the Last Resort Legals team investigate another miscarriage of justice, taking them from post-industrial dereliction of the South Wales Valleys to the gated communities of the Cardiff docklands.Gethin Grey is back in the game. His wife may have left him and he's struggling with life as a single father, but now he's got his biggest case in years. The brutal murder of a young woman called Kelly Rowland has been the talk of the South Wales valleys. Even the conviction of a neighbour, a builder called Morgan Hopkins, failed to stop the gossip. There were too many other suspects still around, among them a pair of coppers: brother and sister. So Gethin was delighted when Morgan's family stumped up the money to pay him and his Last Resort Legals team to reinvestigate the case. But when a new lead takes him undercover into a support group for recovering addicts, Gethin has to confront his own demons.Moving from the former mining towns of the valleys to the shiny new waterfront developments of Cardiff, taking in adult puppet shows and piercing parlors, derelict mines and country clubs, Grey In The Dark lays bare a world in which sex and money collide and everyone has their secrets.John Lincoln is the transparent pseudonym of John Williams, the novelist, biographer and crime fiction reviewer for the Mail on Sunday. His first book Into The Badlands explores 'a vital mix of literary criticism, personality profile, and imaginary geography' (New Statesman and Society) and has become a crime fiction classic. His true crime account of a notorious miscarriage of justice, Bloody Valentine, is a cult classic, described by Benjamin Zephaniah as his favourite book. Since then he's written eight more books including the Cardiff Trilogy of novels and biographies of Michael X, Shirley Bassey, Eartha Kitt & CLR James. His latest novel Grey in the Dark is the second Gethin Grey mystery.Laugharne Weekend 24-26th March. As you can guess by the spoiler-y title, I’m going to discuss 13 crime, mystery, thriller and Suspense novels featuring characters who are journalists. I’ve decided to divide this episode up into two parts, the first is “books I want to read” and the second is “books I’ve read.” My love of characters who are journalists stems from two places. The first is my love of the Superman story. And, the second which is directly related to the first, is my love of the hit 90’s TV show, Lois and Clark. I’m not going to lie, fourteen-year-old me had a massive crush on Dean Cain. Not Dean Cain as Superman but Dean Cain as Clark Kent. What can I say? I live me a nerd. But, I also loved Lois—I could relate to her. She was stubborn, ambitious, and was obsessed with her work. Fourteen-year-old Amelia wanted to be Lois Lane when she grew up. Honestly, there’s a part of me that still does. My Personal Tastes in Books This episode initially had sixteen books, but as I was curating this list, I realised that two of the books contained plots centred around the deaths of toddlers or young children. My family has been through the tragedy of losing an older baby to SIDS when I was five years old. As I’ve grown up, got married, and considered having my own children, I’ve discovered that this event has had a profound effect on me. So, I removed the books from my to be read list, because I will probably find them quite triggering. In general, I tend to stop reading books that feature the investigations of crimes against children and minors under the age of eighteen. I did start reading a book that opened with the aftermath of the death of a young teenage girl, and I got the hint that the crime had a sexual element, I immediately closed the book, and I have no intention of picking it back up. And, there are certain curse words or racial slang that I can’t handle, so I deleted another book for that reason as well, as other reasons. I’m not saying those three books were bad, they were just not for me. Also, it’s worth pointing out that those books had a significant number of good reviews. So, without further ado, let’s get into my list of books featuring characters who are journalists. Books I Want to Read See Her Run by Peggy Townsend The Dying Hour by Rick Mofina The Poet by Michael Connelly False truth (Jordan Fox Mystery Series) by Diane Capri and Beth Dexter The Secret Patient by Vaughan W. Smith Books I’ve Read Absolute Truth by Peter James Anonymous Source by A. C. Fuller Don’t Tell Meg by Paul J. Are you struggling to figure out how to start your novel? Quite often we place much emphasis on the first sentence or paragraph and not to the large scene. In three-act-structure, this scene is referred to as the ordinary world. In this episode, we are going to discuss why this scene is so important and I'll share seven tips to help you write a great ordinary world scene. Before we dive into this episode, I want to point out a few necessary pieces of information. I'm a thriller writer. By admitting this, I would like to point out that my story structure method reflects this genre. This is the reason I started off with the story hook and not the ordinary world scene. A thriller novel starts off with a crime being committed or with the discovery of a crime. If you're writing a romance, you may want to not have the hook as a separate scene but an element within the ordinary world scene. Once again, before we get started, I would like to point out this episode will contain a few minor spoilers from the thriller novel, Sanctus by Simon Toyne. This episode is the second instalment of my three-act structure mini-series. If you've just joined me on this podcast then, I will link the previous two episodes, the hook, and three-act structure below. Today, I will focus on the next plot point in the first act. This plot point is the ordinary world. Thanks for listening!Check out the Blog PostPlot and Story Structure: The Ordinary World | authorpreneurpodcast.com/the-ordinary-world/Check out the Previous EpisodesWhat is Three-Act-Structure? | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/iap012-three-act-structure/How to Write a Great Story Hook in a Novel | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/iap013-the-story-hook/ Tools & ResourcesAsk a Question on Writing | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/question/Your Questions on writing, editing and Self Publishing Answered | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/question/faq/Support the Podcast by buying me a coffee | https://www.buymeacoffee.com/authordhayWant podcast episode updates sent straight to your inbox? | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/podcast/tap/ Connect with Me on Social MediaTwitter: @WriterADHayFacebook: www.facebook.com/authorpreneurpodcastFB group: The Authorpreneur Podcast CommunityInstagram: @authorpreneurpodcastYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/authorpreneurpodcast/videosGoodreads: www.goodreads.com/authoradhay

So, how do you start a story? How do you hook the reader from the very first page? In the literary world, there is a lot of talk about how to write an inciting first line or paragraph, but if you're in the early stages of crafting a story, this advice is useless. There's a step you need to take before you put pen to paper. This step is outlining your story and structuring it in such a way that hooks the reader. And, how do you achieve this? By creating an irresistible story hook.In this episode, I discuss the first plot point in a story, which is the hook. Before we get started, I would like to point out this episode will contain a few minor spoilers from Sanctus by Simon Toyne. So, spoiler alert. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of an irresistible story hook, I'm going to unpack the scenes leading up to the introduction to the protagonist's ordinary world. Why? So you can see first hand how a reader reacts to his story hook. Thanks for listening!Check out the Blog PostPlot and Story Structure: The Hook | authorpreneurpodcast.com/iap013-the-story-hook/ Tools & ResourcesAsk a Question on Writing | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/question/Your Questions on writing, editing and Self Publishing Answered | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/question/faq/Support the Podcast by buying me a coffee | https://www.buymeacoffee.com/authordhayWant podcast episode updates sent straight to your inbox? | https://authorpreneurpodcast.com/podcast/tap/ Connect with Me on Social MediaTwitter: @WriterADHayFacebook: www.facebook.com/authorpreneurpodcastFB group: The Authorpreneur Podcast CommunityInstagram: @authorpreneurpodcastYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/authorpreneurpodcast/videosGoodreads: www.goodreads.com/authoradhay

Bestselling thriller writer Simon Toyne explores his writing routine! In 2007, bored in a job and dreaming of telling stories, Simon quit to finally get one down. Only, he didn't do things by halves. Simon moved his whole family across the channel for a French adventure with the idea that in 7 months, he would finish his first book. The slight issue was... he had no idea what it would be about. Cue a stormy sea crossing, a last-minute hotel booking to get any sleep they could manage, the spindly spire of a cathedral, and an image of a story that he would dedicate the next year to writing. His novel 'Sanctus' was the bestselling debut thriller of 2011, and has been translated into over 20 languages. It's the tale of an old religious order, a secret that could change the world, and a race against time to discover it. Simon talks about how his writing style has changed over the years, how he analysed other books to make sure his sold well, and how he planned his new series 'Solomon Creed' in a completely different way. Our Distinguished Diary today is the weird and wonderful writing routine of Charles Dickens, where we learn how one of the greatest authors in history energised his imagination. And you've just tucked into your second pain au chocolat of the day, while someone is screaming Edith Piaf lyrics into your ears, although you're desperately trying to listen to the random, coffee-shop jazz that's slowly floating from the speakers in the corner. @writerspod writersroutine@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
