Preston & Child continue their #1 bestselling series featuring FBI Special Agent Pendergast and Constance Greene, as they take a final stand against New York's deadliest serial killer: Pendergast's own ancestor…and Constance's greatest enemy. About the Author The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child “stand head and shoulders above their rivals” (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Crooked River, Old Bones, Verses for the Dead, and City of Endless Night. In addition to his novels, Douglas Preston writes about archaeology for The New Yorker and National Geographic magazines. Lincoln Child is a Florida resident and former book editor who has published seven novels of his own, including bestsellers such as Full Wolf Moon and Deep Storm. My special guest is Kate Winkler Dawson here to discuss her new book American Sherlock about America's first and greatest forensic scientist. Get her book on Amazon. From the acclaimed author of Death in the Air ("Not since Devil in the White City has a book told such a harrowing tale"--Douglas Preston) comes the riveting story of the birth of criminal investigation in the twentieth century. Berkeley, California, 1933. In a lab filled with curiosities--beakers, microscopes, Bunsen burners, and hundreds upon hundreds of books--sat an investigator who would go on to crack at least two thousand cases in his forty-year career. Known as the "American Sherlock Holmes," Edward Oscar Heinrich was one of America's greatest--and first--forensic scientists, with an uncanny knack for finding clues, establishing evidence, and deducing answers with a skill that seemed almost supernatural. Heinrich was one of the nation's first expert witnesses, working in a time when the turmoil of Prohibition led to sensationalized crime reporting and only a small, systematic study of evidence. However with his brilliance, and commanding presence in both the courtroom and at crime scenes, Heinrich spearheaded the invention of a myriad of new forensic tools that police still use today, including blood spatter analysis, ballistics, lie-detector tests, and the use of fingerprints as courtroom evidence. His work, though not without its serious--some would say fatal--flaws, changed the course of American criminal investigation. Based on years of research and thousands of never-before-published primary source materials, American Sherlock captures the life of the man who pioneered the science our legal system now relies upon--as well as the limits of those techniques and the very human experts who wield them.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio]

We were visiting Italy for a year because we had a son, and my wife wanted to go to Italy and be with our young son there and to be with her mom and dad and get some support with the young son and stuff. And I was at a crossroads in my professional life. I did not like what I was doing and I got this idea that I was going to start writing fiction. Long story short, I got looking into these self-published authors and all, I was just like, I didn't even understand that existed until when we got to Italy. And then I realized in the drop of a hat. I'm going to be a fiction writer. My wife was nice enough to not disown me or leave me after that. But I decided to start writing books. I'm in Italy, in this country where I don't know, in the area, nobody speaks English whatsoever,

Bigfoot is an instantly recognizable figure. Through the decades, this elusive primate has been featured in movies and books, on coffee mugs, beer koozies, car polish, and CBD oil. Which begs the question: what is it about Bigfoot that's caught hold of our imaginations? Journalist and self-diagnosed skeptic John O'Connor is fascinated by Sasquatch. In The Secret History of Bigfoot: Field Notes on a North American Monster (Sourcebooks, 2024), he embarks on a quest through the North American wilds in search of Bigfoot, its myth and meaning. Alongside an eccentric cast of characters, he explores the zany and secretive world of "cryptozoology," tracking Bigfoot through ancient folklore to Harry and the Hendersons, while examining the forces behind our ever-widening belief in the supernatural. As O'Connor treks through the shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest, listens to firsthand accounts, and attends Bigfoot conventions, he's left wondering―what happens when the lines between myth and reality blur? Perfect for fans of Bill Bryson and Douglas Preston, and with sharp wit and an adventurous spirit, this heartfelt exploration of a cornerstone of American folklore unpacks why we believe in the things that we do, what that says about us, and how it shapes our world. John O'Connor was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and attended the creative writing program at Columbia University, where he wrote his thesis on competitive eating. His writing has appeared in The Believer, Quarterly West and Gastronomica, among other publications. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. “What really amazed me here was that so many of the authors who submitted stories wrote something completely outside their genre,” reflects best-selling author Douglas Preston, one of the project editors behind the dynamic new collaborative novel Fourteen Days. “This book is full of all kinds of weird stories.” Yes, it is. And so is podcast guest Douglas Preston, co-author of dozens of New York Times best-selling thrillers written with his longtime writing partner Lincoln Child—a shining example of what it means to write in collaboration. In all, Preston has published 39 books of fiction and non-fiction. In addition to books, Preston writes about archaeology and paleontology for the New Yorker. He has worked as an editor for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and taught nonfiction writing at Princeton University and is the recipient of numerous writing awards in the U.S. and Europe. He served as president of the Authors Guild from 2019 to 2023. Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Fourteen Days turns on a narrative frame written by Preston, with contributions from a disparate collection of contemporary writers, headed by fellow project editor Margaret Atwood. In addition to Atwood and Preston, the novel features the “voices” of Charlie Jane Anders, Joseph Cassara, Jennine Capó Crucet, Angie Cruz, Pat Cummings, Sylvia Day, Emma Donoghue, Dave Eggers, Diana Gabaldon, Tess Gerritsen, John Grisham, Maria Hinojosa, Mira Jacob, Erica Jong, CJ Lyons, Celeste Ng, Tommy Orange, Mary Pope Osborne, Alice Randall, Ishmael Reed, Roxana Robinson, Nelly Rosario, James Shapiro, Hampton Sides, R.L. Stine, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, Monique Truong, Scott Turow, Luis Alberto Urrea, Rachel Vail, Weike Wang, Caroline Randall Williams, De'Shawn Charles Winslow, and Meg Wolitzer. All proceeds from the book will be directed to the Authors Guild Foundation, the charitable and educational arm of the Authors Guild, dedicated to empowering all writers, from all backgrounds, at all stages of their careers. “One of the greatest fictional detectives of all time” (Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child) is in the sights of the Dead Hours Killer, a serial murderer on a ruthless mission. An airport killer targeting pilots expands his scope. Alex Cross Must Die.“Drop whatever you're doing, Detective Cross, and head to Reagan Airport,” DC Metro Police dispatch says. “A jet just crashed and exploded on the runway. The chief and the FBI want you and John Sampson there pronto.”Cross and Sampson race to the crash site. The plane didn't fail—it was shot down by a stolen Vietnam War–era machine gun. The list of experts who can operate the weapon is short. And time before another lethal strike runs even shorter. Especially for Detective Cross. Alex Cross Must Die. When best-selling thriller writer Douglas Preston began playing around with OpenAI's new chatbot, ChatGPT, he was, at first, impressed. But then he realized how much in-depth knowledge GPT had of the books he had written. When prompted, it supplied detailed plot summaries and descriptions of even minor characters. He was convinced it could only pull that off if it had read his books.Large language models, the kind of artificial intelligence underlying programs like ChatGPT, do not come into the world fully formed. They first have to be trained on incredibly large amounts of text. Douglas Preston, and 16 other authors, including George R.R. Martin, Jodi Piccoult, and Jonathan Franzen, were convinced that their novels had been used to train GPT without their permission. So, in September, they sued OpenAI for copyright infringement. This sort of thing seems to be happening a lot lately–one giant tech company or another "moves fast and breaks things," exploring the edges of what might or might not be allowed without first asking permission. On today's show, we try to make sense of what OpenAI allegedly did by training its AI on massive amounts of copyrighted material. Was that good? Was it bad? Was it legal? GDP Script/ Top Stories for Oct 24th Publish Date: Oct 23rd From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 24th and Happy 76th Birthday to actor Kevin Kline ***DAVE – BALANCING THE BUDGET*** Henssler: 15 I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by MOG. Gwinnett School Board Members Renew Calls For Equity After Graduation Rate Decline Program erases tattoos to help ex-gang members, sex workers rebuild lives Peachtree Corners Man Filed Fraudulent Insurance Claims For Fake Hospital Visits All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett School Board Members Renew Calls For Equity After Graduation Rate Decline Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) announced its class of 2023 graduation rate of 81.9%, falling short of the district's goal of 83.5% and the class of 2022's rate of 83.2%. Most ethnic and racial groups had graduation rates of at least 84%, with Asian students at 92.6% and Hispanic students at 70%. Students participating in the free and reduced lunch program graduated at a rate of 78.2%, and students with disabilities graduated at 69.4%. The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the class of 2023 was noted. The district also highlighted the need for resource allocation and equity within the district. STORY 2: Program erases tattoos to help ex-gang members, sex workers rebuild lives In Los Angeles, a program is helping former gang members and sex workers remove tattoos in exchange for community service and science education to help them turn their lives around. Removing such tattoos can reduce exposure to violence and trauma and make individuals less vulnerable to being targeted. The program has led to success stories, including one participant who became a Secret Service agent. Tattoos related to gangs and sex work can hinder individuals in finding jobs or joining the military. The study found that 88% of the program's clients desired tattoo removal to transition to a healthier life, with 81% reporting success in achieving their goals after tattoo removal. STORY 3: Peachtree Corners Man Filed Fraudulent Insurance Claims For Fake Hospital Visits Kenneth Allen, a Peachtree Corners man, is being sought by state investigators for allegedly defrauding his insurance company by submitting fraudulent claims for hospital visits that never occurred. Between August 2019 and March 2021, Allen filed eight claims with his insurance company for various hospital visits across metro Atlanta, claiming treatment for multiple injuries under his supplemental health insurance policy. The investigation revealed that the hospital visits never happened, and the documents used to support the claims were forged. Allen received approximately $6,100 from these false claims. He is now facing insurance fraud and forgery charges, with investigators currently searching for him. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: PEGGY SLAPPY – TOM WAGES OBITS – ESOG STORY 4: AI is causing panic for authors. Now the courts are involved Prominent authors, including Douglas Preston, John Grisham, and George R.R. Martin, are participating in a proposed class action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI developer of copyright infringement. They claim that OpenAI copied their works to train AI systems like ChatGPT without permission or compensation, which competes with authors for readers and money. OpenAI argues that training an AI system falls under fair use protections. The publishing industry is grappling with AI systems generating text and data using copyrighted materials without consent or compensation. Several authors' groups and individual authors have filed similar lawsuits, and the industry is seeking ways to address the issue, including attribution standards. STORY 5: Police Searching for Men Who Allegedly Stole Over $4K in Merchandise from a Lowe's in Lilburn Two men are being sought by Gwinnett County police for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a Lowe's store in Lilburn. The incident occurred on September 26 when the suspects entered the store, grabbed a garbage bin, and filled it with breakers and other items. They walked out of the store without paying for the items, loaded them into a black BMW sedan, and fled the scene. The stolen merchandise is estimated to be worth $4,074. The police are seeking information about the suspects and have requested public assistance. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to their arrest and indictment. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: JACKSON - INGLES 7 – LAWRENCVILLE STORY 6: Peachtree Road Baptist Church to Celebrate 170th anniversary Peachtree Road Baptist Church, located in Suwanee, Georgia, is celebrating its 170th anniversary. The church, originally organized as Sheepfield Baptist Church in 1853, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. The celebration is scheduled for Sunday, October 28, and will feature a talk on the church's history by former pastor Preston Moore, a video presentation, and a message from the current pastor, Jay Reed. The church campus has expanded over the years and now includes various facilities, such as a sanctuary, office space, Sunday School building, gymnasium, fellowship hall, mission houses, parsonages, a cemetery dating back to the Civil War, and more. Additionally, the church is home to Global Baptist Church Planters, which supports church development worldwide. STORY 7: The search for a man who went missing on Lake Lanier while jumping off a jet ski will resumed on Monday. Walter Guardado vanished at East Bank Park on Buford Dam Road after jumping off his jet ski. His girlfriend, who was with him, couldn't locate him after he jumped into the water. Search efforts by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services and the Hall County Fire Department extended into Saturday night and continued Sunday morning. We'll have final thoughts after this.
