The Merrickville Book Emporium and a charity sale at my work had a few really wonderful books for me this week! Then, I'll be on a book buying break for now. On the 1st of November I'll choose the 25 books I'll be reading until... well, when I am done reading them I suppose. This is part of the 'Read what you own' challenge and it comes at a good time. For now, I'll show some of the wonderful books that ended up being part of my last book haul. Merrickville itself is a perfect little Halloween town, but the real horror was finding a wrecked copy of Stephen King's Night Shift at a charity book sale. In Episode 89, Elizabeth Barnhill (book buyer for Fabled Bookshop) goes behind-the-scenes about what it's like to buy books for an independent bookstore. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights How Elizabeth got her job as book buyer at Fabled Bookshop with no “official” previous experience (and if the owner was nervous to hire someone with no experience). The most surprising thing Elizabeth discovered about being a book buyer. What Elizabeth's relationship with publishing sales reps looks like (including how far in advance they meet). What happens when Elizabeth ends up not liking a book she's ordered for the store. How far in advance of publication date Elizabeth reads and orders books. How Elizabeth factors in other readers' opinions of a book into her orders (traditional media reviews, early readers on #bookstagram, etc). How Elizabeth handles ordering in relation to trends (and her take on the trends of 2021). How Elizabeth decides how many of a particular book to order. How COVID impacted her ordering. The biggest book buy she's ever done for a single book. How Elizabeth decides how much of each order should comprise a specific genre. What the initial book buy for Fabled looked like when it first opened. How Elizabeth decides which books to feature most prominently around the store. If she hand sells books she doesn't personally like. Over on that channel, I have the video version of the podcast as well as behind the scenes vlogs. The other day, I decided to start doing a few tag videos. And, I realised this particular tag would be great for the Thriller Novel Nerd Podcast. So, in this show, I’m going to answer the questions in the book-buying tag and discuss my book buying habits with you. To join in on the discussion come on over to the Thriller Novel Nerd Book Club Facebook group and share your book buying habits with me, under the podcast episode. The Facebook Group is new, and I’m tragically all alone. So come on over and join me. I’ll leave a link to the group in the show notes in your favourite podcasting app. I almost forgot to share this with you. The original creator of the tag is Megan Olivier. She doesn’t have a podcast, but I’ll link her YouTube channel below and a link to the original video.   Here are the questions: Where do you buy your books? Do you ever pre-orders book and if so, do you do this in-store or online? On average, how many books do you buy a month? Do you use your local library? If so, how my books can you or do you borrow at a time? What is your opinion on library books? How do you feel about charity shop or second-hand books? Do you keep your read and TBR pile together on the same bookshelf or not? Do you plan to read all of the books that you own? What do you do with books you own that you feel you will never read or did not enjoy? Have you ever donated books? Have you ever been on a book buying ban? Do you feel that you buy too many books? This week, I talk about my plan with my husband to stop buying books and DVDs for six months, and what this means for the climate (hint: not much). I talk more generally about deprivation as a source of joy and look into the Unread Shelf Project (theunreadshelf.com), which also includes book-buying bans as a way to get reading. And there are shout-outs to BookMooch (bookmooch.com), Emily Atkin's HEATED newsletter, the podcast "Drilled: The Mad Men of Climate Change," and the German-language podcast "Sauercrowded," which features me as a guest in this month's episode.

Are you ready and prepared to sell more books during this Christmas season? Last year, we did a 90-day push to publish our books before the biggest book buying season of the year, Christmas. And it was a HUGE success. Many authors published their books and accomplished so much. This year, we are doing a 90-day accountability group all around the topic of book marketing and selling more books. You can still choose to focus on writing and publishing your book by going through my PUBLISH module, but if you already have a book published, I recommend that you join us to focus on selling more books during the biggest book buying season of the year, Christmas. >>90-Day Accountability Group How does it work? Starting in September, every Wednesday at 3pm EST, our education coordinator, Kim Steadman, will meet with you inside the private Facebook group for Author Audience Academy. It will be a time to share your goals, what you accomplished and get help for where you are stuck. Whether it’s weight loss, paying off debt or publishing and marketing books; accountability WORKS! It simply works. I hope you’ll join us! If you’re not a member yet, you can join us here: www.authoraudienceacademy.com/options >>90-Day Platform Plan I have created a brand new 90-day Platform Plan with a suggested strategy for using the training inside Author Audience Academy to sell more books. You can find it inside the PLATFORM module here: http://members.shelleyhitz.com/lessons/view/51020 >>Marketing Minute Training Along with the 90-day book marketing map, we will also be starting something brand new this September. So fun! It’s called the Marketing Minute Training (MMT). Our education coordinator, Kim Steadman, will be creating short 5-minute videos covering one marketing task each week. Then, our plan is for it to only take 10 minutes for you to actually implement the MMT action for your book. That’s a total of 15 minutes per week. Our goal with the MMT is to create small bite-size marketing actions that correspond with that month's overall 90-Day Platform Plan activities. That way, for these first 90-Days, every single MMT action is a piece in the 90-Day Platform Plan so no one feels overwhelmed! Do you have 15 minutes per week? If so, we’ve got you covered with the new Marketing Minute Training that you can watch AND implement in just 15 minutes per week. Woot! >>VIP Day: The Author Automation System This month, inside Author Audience Academy, we will have a full VIP Day instead of the Clarity Call. This is an extra bonus for all members and is a real world value of $199. I will be sharing this same information in Canada next month where authors are paying $199 to attend. However, you get this as a bonus to your membership. Woot! Date: August 31, 2017 Time: 9am - 4pm mountain (11am - 6pm eastern) ==> Get the link to join and download the worksheets here: http://members.shelleyhitz.com/lessons/view/51028 Whew! There is so much excitement happening this Fall inside Author Audience Academy. Are you in? If you’re a current member, you’re set and ready to go. Have you been on the fence about joining? If so, I recommend you join us for these amazing Fall events that will help prepare you to sell more books this Christmas season. You can join us today for just $177/quarter or $499/year here: www.authoraudienceacademy.com/options Blessings, Shelley p.s. My heart is truly to help you get results. I see so many authors struggle with marketing their books and want to help you move forward. Let’s do this together along with an amazing community of hundreds of authors.
