Ep 36: Why Do We Say "Men Are Trash”? VALENTINE'S SPECIAL

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2021 45:01

What do we mean when we say *men are trash*? What about the saying “not all men?” In this ep, we dive into nice guy culture and how the bar is so infamously low for men, and how that came to be. How has our feminism evolved over time? What did our feminism used to be like, before we knew what we know now? Plus Jess has a hot take on how women and femmes survive life with their cis-het male partners. We break down Valentine’s Day, anti-Valentines, gift giving and the internalized misogyny that inevitably comes with the big day. Also why is being alone such a terrible thing? Why do we have to have someone on Valentine’s Day to be validated? Why can we be curing cancer but our grandmothers don’t approve unless we have a man? Why are we meant to envy people in relationships with men? Mini disclaimer: What we talk about in this episode for the most part aren't our own original thoughts. These are ideas that other women and femmes, particularly black women and black femmes, have been working on, creating and developing for much longer. Nearly everything we’re saying is an extension of someone else’s idea that has been around for a while. Study and learn from black women; they’re the ones doing the work first with none of the credit. Personally, I’ve (Jess) been soaking up a lot of information from podcasts featuring people like Rachel Cargle, Salma El-Wardany, Bobo & Flex and white women like Clementine Ford and Sephy and Wing who also learned these concepts from likely the same black women as well as iconic activists and writers like Angela Davis and Chidera Eggerue (The Slumflower). Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2021 52:31

Well that got ~existential~ quickly. We discuss how social media has been burning us out and bringing us down as of late. Not just the typical comparing-ourselves-to-others, but also how it causes us to spiral into self-hatred when Instagram is forcing us to judge others or ourselves negatively, and how even the positive aspect of socials can be mentally draining. We get into the echochamber that we know all too well, and how it makes us feel like "walking entities of other people's opinions" and not so much ourselves (cue: quarter-life crisis). Winter during a pandemic has us all struggling hard, and scrolling on our phones for endless hours doesn't seem to be helping (shocker!), so we also go over what's been helping us stay off our phones and tune into who we truly are. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode heavily discusses eating disorders. We sit down with Devon Hoholuk, a health and wellness coach specializing in disordered eating and ethical, plant based nutrition. We talk about her approach to eating disorders and veganism, her experience with pregnancy while vegan AND during eating disorder recovery, being a vegan mom in a conservative farm town, and the harmful narratives society teaches us about food, weight and what it means to be “healthy.” Is a whole foods, plant based diet ideal? Where do eating disorders come from? How can we approach disordered eating and the desire for an ethical lifestyle? How can we eat mindfully for better digestion and experience with food? What is Devon’s advice for people who recognize themselves in the depths of diet culture or the pitfalls of an eating disorder, and her advice for concerned friends or family members? We also discuss gut health, how annoying and exclusive the vegan community can be, vegan mom groups, eating animal products when going vegan isn’t possible, and the societal and patriarchal pressure on women and people with uteruses when it comes to weight and “bouncing back” after a pregnancy. Thank you so much Devon. We hope you enjoy this episode! We’re back with more unsolicited advice this new year. From skipping breakfast to joining weight watchers, we’re finally drilling into diet culture. How our favourite fitness influencers perpetuate diet culture, how eating disorders are rooted in fatphobia, and all the things. We get into disordered eating, orthorexia, assigning “good” and “bad” to different foods, the Jubilee videos where people rank each other, society’s bs beauty standards, Victoria’s Secret, toxic Instagram posts, how diet culture disproportionately affects women and feminine people and soooo much more. Why do we all want to look like other people but we hate our own bodies? We get into the bs we’ve been fed since we were kids, like not giving into your cravings, and thinking a piece of cake would make you instantly gain weight (WHICH ISN’T A BAD THING). A good precursor to this episode is Ep 8: The Eating Disorder Episode. We acknowledge we are white, cis, straight, able-bodied, middle-upper-class women with very few marginalized intersections. In these episodes, we share information and knowledge by educators on race, from mostly black educators and creators, and only share knowledge we have confirmed with research. Any opinions are meant to support and do anything but dismiss black or Indigenous voices, or any persons of colour for that matter. We also realize that we, as white people, are inherently racist and are part of the problem. Our decision to try to educate other white people does not excuse us from participating in and benefiting from systems of oppression and discrimination. As Robin DiAngelo says, we are trying to be “less white” by trying not to oppress others. We compare ethical vegans with health-oriented vegans who become vegan solely for health reasons, vegan YouTubers, those attempting veganism and the potential harms in portraying veganism in a certain way. We also talk about vegan vs. plant-based lifestyles and what being a vegan truly means, our own personal lifestyles, relationships with food and individual journeys to health and wellness. Trigger warning: In this episode, we discuss eating disorders, obsessive exercise and obsessive eating. This podcast was recorded more than a month ago before the Black Lives Matter movement and since then, we have become much more educated on and mindful of colonial veganism and the inability for certain groups of people to access veganism. So a little disclaimer, we absolutely realize this truth and we are recording our next episode on Intersectional Veganism. Continuing the conversation on Black Lives Matter, we discuss and put to rest some controversial “opinions” on the matter, share what we learned this week about black and Indigenous history in Canada and America, dive into recent news and Black Lives Matter topics from a white ally perspective, and offer resources that we’ve been using to learn and educate ourselves.
