Let's talk numbers. The “enough number” concept is looking at the expenses in your life and business and determining a revenue goal or baseline for living comfortably instead of living in the cycle of incessant growth for growths sake. I've seen and heard this concept discussed in multiple workshops, YouTube videos, panels and podcasts over the years. Probably because establishing an "enough number" in the beginning is a good idea and fetishizing infinite, up and to the right, hockey stick growth is not only a bad idea but goes against many of our core values. But what I can't stop thinking about is: Maybe there are other ways to stay in integrity with our values and business growth without putting literal and subconscious caps on our potential revenue and impact? The world can feel like such a lonely place sometimes. You ever feel like there's not enough love and support to go around? Like, there's a severe shortage of compassion in the world, both for you and well, everyone? Me too, friends.  To get us into this topic, this week on It's OK, we cover grief comparisons, like whether divorce and death should be compared, or if the death of anyone should be compared to the loss of a pet. Of course the short answer is no: grief comparisons are never useful. For the long answer though - listen to the show.  This episode is basically my TED talk, if I had one, on how we create that support-filled world we all want (and deserve). It's my personal favorite episode of season one, brought to you again for this Valentine's day.    In this episode we cover: Why comparing divorce to death, or pet loss to child loss, is a Very. Bad. Idea. (usually) Is it ok to be sad about a musician or actor's death, even if you never met them?  How to treat compassion like an abundant resource AND have good boundaries all at the same  The path to the love-filled, support-rich world we all want (it's not easy, but it's worth it)  Terminology update: in this episode I use the term gender-fluid, but the term gender-expansive is more accurate.   Looking for a creative exploration of grief? This author talk featuring author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Rachel Cargle in conversation with Well-Read Black Girl founder, Glory Edim, was everything we'd hoped it would be. Each lady brought warmth and wisdom, discussing how African American literature serves not just as a mirror reflecting personal growth but also as a beacon calling for societal change. Their experiences, alongside the revelations shared from Rachel's memoir, A Renaissance of Our Own, shed light on the essential nature of storytelling in advocacy and the holistic approach to defining success that transcends material wealth. Our conversation turned to the struggle and beauty of remaining true to oneself amidst the demands of public life. We pondered the legacies of powerhouse figures like Oprah and Beyoncé, delving into how their examples of ambition and self-realization have influenced our personal and professional endeavors. This discussion was a reminder that our brightest potential lies within, waiting to be unlocked by embracing every facet of our identity. We wrapped up our heartfelt exchange by contemplating the balance between personal well-being and the fight for collective liberation, a conversation sparked by the poignant insights of Tony Kate Bombard and the impact of the Loveland Foundation. Can grief be an opportunity for growth and self-understanding? The answer, of course, is yes: but it's a bit more complex than that. This week, author, philanthropist, activist Rachel Cargle on survival optimism, the resilience narrative, and why questioning the stories you tell yourself - with curiosity and kindness - is a powerful path of healing.    In this episode we cover:  How was grief modeled for you growing up, and how does that affect later grief? Can your memory of childhood grief be…. entirely wrong? (or at least, inaccurate) Can you do grief wrong?  The difference between curiosity and judgment Is it ok to feel relieved when a sick person dies?  Rachel's new book, A Renaissance of Our Own   Want to talk with Megan directly? It's both/and.” - Rachel Cargle   “(As) I really look at my childhood and have to dust some things off, (I'm) also cleaning off the spaces where good things are. It's another week of our illuminating For the Love of Being Seen and Heard series. We're talking to people that are doing the life-changing work of helping each other see and hear each other–to see and hear communities that we are not a part of, to see and hear voices that have been traditionally silenced or marginalized, or even to see and hear ourselves in honest and affirming ways. Our guest this week is a powerful advocate, but with a tender heart who works in so many spaces that matter: feminism, racial justice, the arts, activism, self care and healing. Rachel Cargle is a writer and entrepreneur who has created powerful online learning spaces. She's a regular contributor to Cultured Magazine, The Cut and Atmos. She's been featured in the New York Times and Forbes as well. Her work centers around an invitation to pursue healing and growth, as well as re-imagining how systems that no longer serve us can be dismantled or changed to embrace justice and liberation. Her belief is that every one of us has power–the power to unlearn, relearn and reimagine–taking ourselves out of stuck spaces and creating places for understanding for everyone. Her thoughts on feminism are so insightful as she looks at how a well intentioned movement for the progress of women leaves out key communities and how reimagining how to see and hear the needs of every woman toward better conditions for all women. This powerful discussion centers around: An explanation and brief history of the feminist movement and how communities of color often are left behind in this work How the culture, both inside and outside of black communities often stereotype black women as workers, as strong, as able to bear pain differently than their white counterparts; and Rachel's work to help black women feel cared for–which leads to an amazing ripple effect on families, organizations and communities The Loveland Foundation, which gives black women access to black therapists, to self-care and to other resources that are so often not readily or affordably available  Simple ways that women can get involved in the conversation to become clear about this intersection of feminism and race by hearing and telling truths, and to engage in knowledge, empathy, and action.  Sometimes the truth can be hard to process, but when there is intentionality in how we exist in our efforts toward benefitting the condition of women, the result is liberation for all women.  * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I believe that when black women are poured into,  it really offers a ripple effect to most other places in our communities and societies.” - Rachel Cargle "The systems are insistent on us not being curious. If we're not curious, they must stay the same. And if they stay the same the people who built them to win will continue winning." - Rachel Cargle "A lot of what I didn't yet know was what it meant to be a black woman in the feminist movement,  in spaces full of white women who were having a very different experience than I was, and who were benefiting from the outcomes of our collective work--more than the black women who were doing equal amounts of the work--and sometimes even more of the work in these spaces." - Rachel Cargle "Empathy that doesn't just say,  'I'm so sorry this happened to you.'" It's empathy that says, 'how do I play into you not having your needs met?' And often there's an answer to that--it's because of my  privileges and how those make me blind to what your needs are." - Rachel Cargle “There is a necessity for us to be critical and to ask questions, and to have this radical empathy that insists that there can be no way that anyone else will rise without all of us doing it at the same time.” - Rachel Cargle “Truth allows us to change something.” - Rachel Cargle “When you're vulnerable in America as a black woman, you could die. Your children could die. Your family could die. That's the truth. So there has to be this balance of the fight and the tending, the fight, and the nourishing because one or the other can either harden you or dissolve you.”  - Rachel Cargle “Art's role is to remind us of humanity because if it wasn't there, we would get caught up in the robotics of systems. It's there to remind us that we're humans as well.” - Rachel Cargle Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Photo of Rachel from the Women's March in 2017 per Huffington Post article “Feminism is White Supremacy In Heels” an article by Rachel Cargle in Harper's Bazaar Elizabeth Cady Staton Ida B. Justice Rolando Acosta shares his story of growing up in the Dominican Republic and coming to New York at 14, finding opportunities by excelling academically and on the baseball field, and choosing the law and going to work at Legal Aid as a way of paying back the help that had been given to his family. Justice Acosta and his daughter Zila Acosta-Grimes compare notes on their upbringing and their privileges, and how they have learned to use privilege as power. Justice Acosta remembers for us his time building the Dominican community in Washington Heights and Inwood by building up social service infrastructure like Alianza Dominicana and Community Association of Progressive Dominicans alongside other community leaders like Adriano Espaillat and Dr. Raphael Lantigua. Justice Acosta also shares insights about the challenges of making change happen at the institutional level, delving into his own efforts to modernize the Appellate Division First Department while he was Presiding Justice. Justice Acosta talked with the ODEIB team about the importance of representation not just in the workplace and the boardroom, but in institutions of justice and as a building block of the rule of law. How might we honor and follow the authentic call of our purpose? This week, guest Rachel Cargle shares in a rich and enthralling conversation with Ayana that calls forth themes of rootedness, truth, and renaissance. Rachel honors a rootedness that comes from deep connection to ancestry, to Blackness, and to the earth, and she recognizes the way the earth and its cycles offer us examples of what presence and reciprocity look like. As Rachel points out in her forthcoming book A Renaissance of Our Own, we are in need of a renaissance. Attuned to years of intense work around race and racial consciousness within the United States, Rachel uses the dreams and desires from this time as the raw materials for revolution, Rachel envisions a collective renaissance that centers on intergenerational conversation. Rooted in trust, how might we reimagine this world together? Rachel Elizabeth Cargle is an activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropic innovator. What would be different if we could all just tell the truth about our lives?   Welcome to SEASON THREE of It's OK that You're Not OK: the podcast (formerly known as Here After with Megan Devine).    I started this show to talk about grief, and it's grown to be so much more than that - it's become a place for real conversations about life, and love, and loss, and even… hope.   In season three, episode zero, we cover the name change (FKA: Here After with Megan Devine), explore the worlds we create when we decide to talk about difficult things, and get a little preview of this season's guests.    This season is FULL of deeply fascinating conversations with wonderful people. Guests include:   Baratunde Thurston on the twin arcs of grief and celebration that weave through his work as an author, speaker, and TV host.  Musician Sarah Ramey shares the joy of having her song featured in an episode of the hit series Wednesday, and the grief of being a person with a chronic illness in an industry that doesn't care if you're too sick to create more music.  Creative Live founder Chase Jarvis talks about whether a financially successful, able bodied white male is really allowed to feel grief or exhaustion.  Trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté describes how disallowing grief creates a disconnected, often violent world - and of course, what we can do about it.  And so many more conversations with kind, thoughtful people, like Rachel Cargle, Maggie Smith, Valarie Kaur, Pooja Lakshmin, Bill McKibben… the list is long, and I can't wait for you to meet them all.    About your host:   Psychotherapist and bestselling author Megan Devine is recognized as one of today's most insightful and original voices on grief, from life-altering losses to the everyday grief that we don't call grief. The world can feel like such a lonely place sometimes. You ever feel like there's not enough love and support to go around? Like, there's a severe shortage of compassion in the world, both for you and well, everyone? Me too, friends. To get us into this topic, this week on Here After with Megan Devine, we cover grief comparisons, like whether divorce and death should be compared, or the death of anyone should be compared to the loss of a pet. How to treat compassion like an abundant resource AND have good boundaries all at the same  The path to the love-filled, support-rich world we all want (it's not easy, but it's worth it)  Fun ideas to help you seed love and compassion in the world, plus the one habit to break and re-make Notable quote:  “It sounds pretty woo but compassion really is an expandable resource. Practicing inclusion and validation means people feel heard, and heard people hear people, which means the whole culture starts to change from one of vindictive “how dare you feel that way!” to at worst, a neutral, impartial kindness, and at best - well, being generous like this creates a world built and sustained by love.” - Megan Devine Resources:  Love in action! Check out this exceptionally non-extensive list of people to learn from as we grow the love filled world we all want:  Rachel Cargle, Alok Menon, Alice Wong, Free Mom Hugs, Farmer Veteran Coalition, Natalie Weaver, & Resting Waters Terminology update: in this episode, I use the term “gender fluid,” but the term  gender-expansive is more accurate. The “is there love available here?” question comes from Mark Silver. Get in touch:  Thanks for listening to this week's episode of Here After with Megan Devine. Who am I? What am I? What is my purpose? These are the kinds of questions that Nina and Anna's clients often come to them with. So many of us get caught up in our own conditioning and other people's identities that it becomes difficult to decipher who we really are. On today's episode, Anna and Nina discuss their thoughts and experiences with personal and social identity.  One of the greatest factors that muddles our relationship with identity is social media. Nina notes that there's a huge business of selling an image and use of façade marketing, especially in the world of fitness influencers. Anna and Nina talk about the importance of allowing yourself to experiment and honor what feels good without getting caught up in the ego or ideas of who you should be.  They also touch on the consequences of having a lack of coherent sense of identity. It usually results in a lack of compassion and acceptance of others, which creates an environment where people are afraid to affirm themselves and live freely. Anna and Nina round out their conversation by describing what they identify as and how that shapes their everyday lives.  Listen to the episode on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-be-human/id1575612024 (Apple Podcasts), https://open.spotify.com/show/1V8taFSZQDpMcXkrP5dGrs?si=PtYeksWSRLGn_vu1vWBvMw&dl_branch=1 (Spotify), https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS9yTHpBOUg2Mg (Google Podcasts), https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa34c28b-2ac5-49cb-9fc7-15328379d789 (Amazon Music), https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-how-to-be-human-84625355/ (iHeartRadio), https://www.stitcher.com/show/how-to-be-human-5 (Stitcher), or on your favorite podcast platform Topics Covered: The struggles of working with different identities as a Tarot reader  The obsession with being a social media star and selling an image Getting more comfortable with calling out people who create unsafe and exclusive environments  The problem with choosing your identity instead of internalizing your own values Discovering one's personal potential  Resources Mentioned: https://ystudios.com/insights-people/influence-on-identity (Y Studios - What Factors Really Influence Identity?)  https://www.newyorker.com/books/under-review/how-social-media-shapes-our-identity (The New Yorker - How Social Media Shapes Our Identity By Nausicaa Renner)  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/science-choice/201412/basics-identity (Psychology Today - Basics of Identity )  https://open.spotify.com/show/0podj5AKLOFvJAS1raltmw?si=efa2fb3e766f44a4 (Sounds Like a Cult Podcast)  https://rachelcargle.com (Rachel Cargle)  http://ihartericka.com (Ericka Hart) Get in Touch: https://howtobehumanpod.com/ (How to Be Human) https://www.instagram.com/howtobehumanpod/ (How to Be Human Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/annatoonk/ (Anna's Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/ninaendrst/ (Nina's Instagram) https://www.annatoonk.com/ (Book a session with Anna) https://ninaendrsthealth.com/ (Book a session with Nina)

In her most recent book, Women Talk Money, Rebecca created a collection of 29 essays by different female writers who explore the profound impact of money on women's lives. The collection includes previously unpublished essays by trailblazing writers, activists, and models, such as Alice Walker, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Rachel Cargle, Tracy McMillan and more. Rebecca is the author of several bestselling books; a speaker who has appeared at over four hundred universities, literary conferences, and corporate campuses; and a DEI consultant for several Fortune 500 companies. She is the co-founder of the Third Wave Fund, an organization that gives grants to women and transgender youth working for social justice. Walker was named by Time magazine as one of the most influential leaders of her generation. She lives in Los Angeles. WOMEN TALK MONEY: Breaking the Taboo is a searing anthology of essays exploring the profound impact of money on women's lives, edited by prominent feminist and writer Rebecca Walker (Simon & Schuster). This collection lifts the veil on how women talk about money and unflinchingly recounts the power of money to impact health, define relationships, and shape female identity. These deeply resonant essays are full of courage and vulnerability as these writers explore the far reaches of the shame, humiliation, anxiety—or sometimes joy or relief—that can surround the taboo topic of money. You ever feel like there's not enough love and support to go around? Like, there's a severe shortage of compassion in the world, both for you and well, everyone? Me too, friends. This episode is basically my TED talk, if I had one, on how we create that support-filled world we all want (and deserve). It's my personal favorite episode of season one.  In this episode we cover: Why comparing divorce to death, or pet loss to child loss, is a Very. Bad. Idea. (usually) Is it ok to be sad about a musician or actor's death, even if you never met them?  How to treat compassion like an abundant resource AND have good boundaries all at the same  The path to the love-filled, support-rich world we all want (it's not easy, but it's worth it)    Want your questions answered on the show? Practicing inclusion and validation means people feel heard, and heard people hear people, which means the whole culture starts to change from one of vindictive “how dare you feel that way!” to at worst, a neutral, impartial kindness, and at best - well, being generous like this creates a world built and sustained by love.” - Megan Devine Questions to Carry with you: Fun ideas to help you seed love and compassion in the world, plus the one habit to break and re-make Resources:  Love in action!
