Send us a textThe most dangerous scam isn't the one you've never heard of, it's the one that feels urgent, secret, and strangely personal.  Take It To The Board host Donna DiMaggio Berger sits down with Paul Greenwood, who led San Diego's elder abuse prosecution unit for 22 years, to unpack how fraudsters weaponize emotion, AI, and routine technology to separate people from their savings. From “Granny, I'm in jail” calls to deepfake audio, from bogus jury-duty warrants to polished romance profiles, they trace the tactics that work across ages and communities—and show you how to avoid disaster. Together, Donna and Paul explain why the core script rarely changes: act now, tell no one, pay in untraceable ways. He shares the S.C.A.M. method—Stop, Check, Ask, Mention—as a simple, repeatable defense that anyone can use before clicking a link or transferring funds.  They dig into voice cloning, video generation, and how call centers in repurposed casinos run large-scale romance-investment schemes. You'll hear why isolation is a critical red flag, how caregivers and even professionals can exploit access, and how a short letter to your parent's bank can trigger real oversight. They also describe the first-hour playbook if you've been hit: contact your bank, file a police report, and submit to ic3.gov while reaching out to merchants or crypto kiosks to freeze wallets fast. For condo and HOA leaders, this conversation doubles as a toolkit for community safety: host fraud-prevention workshops, use clear language in newsletters, and create a simple reporting pathway that protects privacy while mobilizing help. Paul's courtroom stories reveal the true cost of fraud—lost homes, shattered health, and lingering shame—and why judges, banks, and families must treat it with the seriousness it deserves. You'll leave with practical steps, tested scripts, and resources to share with parents, neighbors, and boards. Conversation Highlights:A breakdown of the most common scams targeting consumers todayThe three red flags every listener should memorize before answering a call, opening an email, or clicking a linkHow victims can move past shame and take action—reporting scams and starting the recovery processWhich scams are surging right now (romance, tech support, government impostors, investment and crypto) and what makes each one so convincingThe one bank or retailer safeguard that could prevent a significant portion of scam losses if implemented tomorrowDebunking the myth that only older generations fall victim to scams—and how Millennials and Gen Z are targeted differentlyHow HOAs and condo associations can play a meaningful role in fraud prevention, from newsletters and lobby screens to manager trainingRed flags that expose illegitimate door-to-door contractors after storms—and what associations should communicate to residents right awayA one-minute checklist listeners can use to protect themselves and their families, covering phones, email, banking, passwords, and credit freezesThe single scam line everyone should hang up on immediatelyRelated Links:Resource: Common Frauds and ScamsArticle: Government Issues Scam Alert for Corporate Transparency ActResource: What are some common types of scams?

Reports of financial exploitation of vulnerable adults in Minnesota has steadily risen since 2021. According to data from the Minnesota Department of Human Services via the Vulnerable Adult Maltreatment Dashboard, reports of abuse or exploitation have gone up from 55,000 to over 66,000. Vulnerable adult is a legal category for adults who have difficulty caring for themselves without help. It includes people with disabilities as well as older people in assisted living or nursing homes. A new state law allows a court to more quickly step in if an older adult is being scammed or stolen from — a judge can even freeze assets under the law, which took effect Jan. 1. Amanda Vickstrom is the executive director of the nonprofit Minnesota Elder Justice Center and joined Minnesota Now host Nina Moini to talk more about the data.

This week, we sit down with Al Pascual, CEO and founder of Scamnetic, to talk about fraud from the inside out. Al didn't come up through product or engineering. He started his career chasing real fraud cases, shaped early on by parents who were cops and a first job in a bank fraud department. That hands-on experience is what pushed him from treating fraud as “just a job” to seeing it as his lane.We get into the scam patterns that worry him most right now, including pig butchering and sextortion schemes that still aren't getting enough mainstream attention. Al makes a clear case that fraud isn't primarily a data or tooling problem. It's a human one. Psychology, pressure, shame, and timing matter more than most defenses want to admit. When a big fraud story hits the news, he explains how coverage often misses the point by focusing on the tech and ignoring the manipulation. Al shares one of the strangest cases he's worked, and what it taught him about how creative and absurd fraudsters can be. We also tackle the reality of AI-enabled scams, including voice cloning. How common is it really, and who's actually at risk? Kevin is skeptical he'd fall for it, while Laura shares a story about a friend losing $500 to a gift card scam, a reminder that real people get caught all the time. This one is a grounded, sometimes funny, and occasionally unsettling look at how fraud really works, and why understanding people matters as much as understanding systems.A recognized expert on cybercrime, Al Pascual is the CEO and Founder of Scamnetic. Scamnetic is a software solution for scam detection and protection that uses AI to analyze incoming communications in real time and flag or score risk before someone falls for a scam. A successful technology entrepreneur and a former managing executive of Javelin Strategy & Research, Al has spent his career laser-focused on protecting consumers and organizations from financially motivated crimes. His past research on consumer identity theft has been cited by hundreds of media outlets and presented at conferences around the world. Al cut his teeth fighting fraudsters at HSBC, Goldman Sachs, and FIS, where during his time as an investigator, his work resulted in the arrest of more than four hundred suspects.

New Year Of Intentions, Nertz to Resolutions. Why start the year lying? Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.       -Alice Morse Earle- Let's get anti-inflammatory!  Drinking hot lemon water in the morning is a popular ritual that offers several practical health benefits, though it is often surrounded by some common myths. While it isn't a "miracle cure," it is an excellent way to kickstart your body's essential functions. Myth vs. Reality The Claim The Reality "It detoxes your body." Your liver and kidneys handle detoxing 24/7. Lemon water doesn't "flush" toxins, but its hydrating effect helps your kidneys filter waste more easily. "It melts fat/boosts metabolism." There is no evidence that lemon water directly burns fat. However, it can help with weight management by replacing high-calorie drinks or reducing hunger before a meal. "It alkalizes your blood." While lemon juice is alkalizing after metabolism, it cannot change the pH level of your blood (which is strictly regulated by your body). ADD The Anti-Inflammatory Duo: Turmeric & Black Pepper Turmeric is famous for curcumin, a compound with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. However, curcumin is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb on its own. The Science: Adding a pinch of black pepper contains piperine, which has been shown to increase curcumin absorption by up to 2,000%. Goal: Reducing joint pain and systemic inflammation. How to add: 1/4 tsp turmeric powder + a crack of fresh black pepper. 2. The Digestive Aid: Fresh Ginger Ginger contains gingerol, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It's particularly effective at soothing the digestive tract and reducing "gut inflammation." The Benefit: It stimulates digestive enzymes and can help reduce bloating or morning nausea. Goal: Improved gut health and reduced muscle soreness. Combining red-fleshed apples (such as the Redlove or Weirouge varieties) with celery in a juice creates a potent, anti-inflammatory beverage that is nutritionally superior to standard green apple and celery mixes. While regular apples have white flesh, red-fleshed apples are "bio-fortified" by nature, containing significantly higher levels of antioxidants throughout the entire fruit, not just the skin. People work hard to steal money. After a year of reflection, I'm back with a sound that feels like home. "Hold Me Close" is officially out—think cinematic soul meets raw, intimate storytelling. The wait is over. Let's dance.

And if you've ever wondered how to find a plastic surgeon you can truly trust, both doctors share the exact questions they'd want their own family members to ask. If you've ever taken thyroid medication exactly as prescribed… and still struggled with fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, anxiety, or feeling "off," you've probably wondered: "Are thyroid meds a scam?" In this episode, Priscilla breaks down this emotionally loaded question with science, clarity, and a dose of tough love. Instead of blaming the medication—or blaming yourself—she exposes the real issue: the conventional thyroid model promises results it was never designed to deliver. You'll learn why so many women feel no different (or worse) on medication, the six biggest "missed pieces" keeping your metabolism stuck, and how to finally create a metabolic environment where your thyroid meds can actually work. This episode is a must-listen if you've ever been told: "Your labs are normal." "Your symptoms aren't related to your thyroid." "There's nothing else you can do." "Just take this pill and come back in six months." Spoiler: your frustration is valid, and you're not crazy. In This Episode, We Cover:

The documents suggest that while Meta has taken steps to reduce fraudulent ads, it has also focused on managing how those scams are seen by regulators — including making certain scam ads harder to find when authorities search Meta’s public Ad Library. To unpack what this means for users, regulators, and South Africa’s own digital safety landscape, Amy MacIver is joined by Jan Vermeulen, Editor at MyBroadband.co.za, one of the country’s leading online IT and technology news platforms. Afternoon Drive with John Maytham is the late afternoon show on CapeTalk. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic, and weather. We talked to economist Paul Krugman, who has a great new piece on his Substack casting a lot of much-needed skepticism on the deal.
