Hearing the Christmas story outside of the holiday can bring a new context. Today, let's focus on Mary and Joseph as new parents in this story: (Luke 2:12-19 MSG) The angel said, “Don't be afraid. I'm here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed. Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself.Consider for a moment this strange truth: God entrusted His Son that He sent to redeem the world to a man and woman who were sinners. The same scenario that started the mess to begin with. At least, the first couple wasn't sinners in the beginning. But Mary and Joseph were. Why would He do something so illogical? Simple. To redeem everything that went wrong the first time through the same method: Obeying His direction through free will, free choice.Read the last verse one more time: Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself.When life got hard, when being the Messiah's mom was difficult, when following God's plan looked crazy, when Jesus was on His way to the cross, Mary held on to the God of messes and miracles, of shepherds and angels, of death and new life.When life gets hard for you, maybe as a parent, when being your kid's parent is difficult, when following God's plan looks crazy, when fear, pain, and struggle are in your face, hold on to the God of messes and miracles, of shepherds and angels, of death and new life. Hold onto the things of God in your heart, deep within you.Let's pray: “Lord Jesus, what awesome parents You must have had. Help me to take as much care with my children as Mary and Joseph did with You. Hold me close while I keep You in my heart. As above, so below. Amen”

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Romans 8:31-33 Without a Doubt! There are very few things you can say without a doubt. When making plans, you can’t say they will happen without a doubt. When someone asks you a difficult question, can you always answer confidently, without a doubt? Thankfully, we can answer life’s most crucial question without a doubt, and not because we’re so smart, but because God is so great! Life’s most crucial question is, “Am I right with God?” or “Will God let me into heaven?” Some people struggle to answer those questions without a doubt. Those doubts come from the reality of sin. God is holy and perfect; we are not. Just one sin is enough to bar us from heaven, and we've committed more than one. More than we can count. It would be presumptuous to believe we can simply walk through heaven’s gates, except that God assures us of this without doubt or hesitation. God is for us! He’s on our side. He says that our sins are forgiven. This removes any and every shred of doubt. Who can bring any charges against us that will stick? Our own doubts and guilty conscience might try to tell us we aren’t forgiven or worthy, but they don’t call the shots! God does. He has justified us. That means he declares, with absolute authority, that we are not guilty because he’s forgiven all our sins. And if any doubt should remain, here’s proof: God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. This is how the guilty are declared innocent and the accused become acquitted, without a doubt. God spared no expense to make things right between you and him. God left heaven and carried a cross to make heaven your home. It’s yours through Christ, without a doubt. Romans 8:28 It’s All Good! “It’s all good!” someone might say. We might tell ourselves, “It’s all good,” even when it’s not. Even when it doesn’t seem good, we try to remain optimistic, look at the brighter side, and have faith that it will all work out. The Christian faith is not merely faith that all things will work out. It’s faith in the God and Savior who works out all things for eternal good. This Bible verse is not a promise that only good and pleasant things will happen to you if you just love God enough. It’s a reminder that those who love God and are loved by God will experience all sorts of things that don’t seem good and pleasant. When something challenging or tragic comes into your life, you might be tempted to wonder, “Does God have something against me? Is that why bad things are happening?” You may doubt that God is really on your side. But here is his assurance: He's not working against you; he’s working for you and for your good! Jesus shows us how true this promise is. No one in the world would naturally see someone nailed to a cross and think, “That’s good.” Yet, in that way, God was at work to accomplish the greatest good—the forgiveness of our sins and eternal life with him. That’s good! When things happen in life that the world does not see as good, we have God’s promise that even this he will work out for good. It could be good personally for you because the thing that initially causes pain or sorrow could be God’s way of shaping you, strengthening you, or sparing you from greater physical or spiritual danger. It could bring good into the lives of others around you. If you’ve been through something, you are better equipped to encourage someone else who’s going through it too. It really is all good when we find ourselves in the loving arms of the God who works in all things for our eternal good! Slatton were honored to welcome Jacqueline Larsen as guest to the show.   About Jacqueline Larsen, 2025 Dole Caregiver Fellow, North Carolina:   Jacqueline Larsen cares for her husband, Jeffery (Jeff) Larsen, a retired Air Force pararescueman (PJ) who served for 18 years and deployed 20 times. From a young age, Jeff knew he wanted to become a PJ and serve his country. After graduating high school in 2010, he enlisted in the Air Force, completed the rigorous training, and earned his place in the elite unit. Over the years, he sustained multiple injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), carpal tunnel in both hands, shoulder pain, and herniated discs, which ultimately led to his medical retirement.   Jacqueline met Jeff in early 2020 through a dating app—just as she was about to give up on dating to focus on fixing up her newly purchased farm. Jeff had only recently joined the app as a New Year's resolution, and the two instantly connected. Their relationship quickly deepened, and by July 2020, they had eloped, with plans to celebrate with friends and family later that summer. However, on the eve of their planned celebration, tragedy struck when he fell when trying to move bales of hay on his own, leaving him quadriplegic. At the time, Jacqueline was eight weeks pregnant with their second child and navigating the overwhelming reality of Jeff's hospitalization during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.   Jeff spent months in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, including the Shepherd Center in Atlanta and the VA in Augusta, before finally returning home just before Christmas. Since then, Jacqueline has dedicated herself to his care, balancing physical and occupational therapy sessions, pain management treatments, and adaptive rehabilitation activities that help Jeff regain independence. He is working toward riding a hand bike, using adaptive equipment for long-range shooting, and assisting with farm chores from his wheelchair.   Their family, which includes their two sons, 11-year-old Lucas and 4-year-old Jackson, have adapted to a new normal—one filled with resilience, adjustments, and an emphasis on kindness and understanding. They have learned that while their family is not able to do all the things other families can do, they now create quality time where they can celebrate with new traditions. The boys have learned to be kind, courteous, and helpful to all people.   Living in rural North Carolina, just outside Fort Bragg, Jacqueline faced challenges securing reliable respite care due to the limitations of the VA Caregiver Support Program and Tricare's lack of in-network providers in their county. Her experience has fueled her advocacy for systemic change to better support veteran caregivers, particularly those who have had to leave successful careers due to their caregiving responsibilities.   She is passionate about raising awareness of the financial strain that unpaid caregiving places on families, including the burden of student loans for caregivers who can no longer pursue their careers.   Currently, Jacqueline is working to turn their hobby farm into a sustainable business that will provide employment opportunities for both her and Jeff.   About the Dole Caregiver Fellowship:   The Elizabeth Dole Foundation Dole Caregiver Fellows Program is a selective leadership and advocacy fellowship for individuals who provide care and support to wounded, ill, or injured service members and veterans of all generations. Participants—spouses, parents, adult children, friends, or other loved ones—are chosen from across the United States to represent caregivers across their communities and nationally.   During a two-year term, Fellows receive training, build networks, and work with policymakers, organizations, and the public to raise awareness of the value of caregivers and the challenges they face. And if it does, what exactly are we losing?For generations, Raleigh was simply the bicycle. Not a bicycle brand among many, but the bicycle you knew. Children wanted a Chopper, teenagers wanted something faster, adults rode Raleighs to work, to the shops and, quite often, into a hedge because bicycle brakes in those days seemed to regard stopping as more of a suggestion.Founded in Nottingham in the nineteenth century, Raleigh became one of the great names of British manufacturing. At its peak it was producing enormous numbers of bikes, exporting around the world and employing thousands of people. The Raleigh Chopper became a genuine cultural icon. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:29-33 Why Do You Doubt? Have you ever been worried about something and doubted that it would be ok? But then you get through it, and you wonder “why did I doubt?” The answer is simple: because you didn’t know the outcome. You didn’t have hindsight to know it would all work out. Jesus asked Peter that simple question after he rescued him from the stormy waters. Why do you doubt? The answer was simple: because Peter took his eyes off Jesus. When you take your eyes of faith off Jesus and you look to your own abilities or only see the storms of life instead of the power and promise of Jesus, doubts surge. It can seem like we can’t keep our heads above water. It can seem like we are drowning. If we stop looking to Jesus as the answer to life’s biggest problem, which is sin, we truly are in over our heads with no way to bail out. But Jesus came to the rescue. He saved us from drowning in our sins and doubts, and he preserves our lives so that neither doubt nor death overtakes us. After Jesus rescued Peter, he got in the boat with Peter. Jesus doesn’t leave us alone to be tossed around by chance. He remains with us to bring a steady calm to a turbulent life. He keeps us afloat with his love and promise. There’s no need to doubt. Even when you can’t see him physically, Jesus strolls across the storms of life. Jesus gives us the foresight to know that in all things, he is with us, keeping us afloat by his grace. He gives us the faith that triumphs over doubt and the foresight to know that one day we will be with him in heaven. Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive my doubts, calm my fears, and uplift me by your grace.
