In the latest episode of The Vegan Pod we're diving into the history of veganism, tracing the movement's roots back to the founding of The Vegan Society in 1944 and exploring how it has grown and evolved over the decades. We're fortunate to have two incredible guests with us for this episode. First, we're joined by Kim Stallwood, an animal rights author and scholar with decades of experience in the movement. Also joining us is Matthew Cole, a sociologist and lecturer whose research has explored veganism, anti-veganism and the cultural construction of human-animal relations. Together, they explore the founding of The Vegan Society and unpack some of the challenges faced by vegans over the years.  The views expressed by guests on The Vegan Pod are not necessarily the views of The Vegan Society.

#40 Buzzworthy Bites: Navigating the Avocado Vegan Controversy

The Keto Vegan

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2024 18:07

In this episode Rachel, having been asked a number of times if she's actually vegan because she has bought an avocado, thought it was time to explore the issue and create an episode to answer questions such as these: are almonds and avocados vegan? can vegans eat avocado? do vegans eat avocados? how are avocados not vegan? why aren't avocados vegan? why is veganism so associated with avocados? fellow vegans do you purchase and consume avocados?   For a keto-vegan avocados are an excellent choice of food because their nutritional values, per 100g, are: fat 19.5, carbs 2.9, protein 1.9 fibre 3.4. They also include 485 mg of potassium, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), vitamin E, and magnesium.   Find out how Rachel thinks we can change the world; if she remembers the first time she ever had some avocado; and whether she does or does not buy them.   It is claimed that avocados have been blamed for driving millennials to the brink of financial ruin, (this links to an Australian article claiming that eating Avocados on toast is costing millennials the price of a house deposit! Take this article with a pinch of salt I feel!) Avocados also then became a health hazard with the proliferation of “avocado hand” injuries (caused by sloppy attempts to remove the pit with a chef's knife). Finally, and Rachel thinks this is the biggest controversy QI asked that fateful question around avocados not being vegan. The Vegan Society, who created the word ‘vegan' and ‘veganism' states the definition of being a vegan: "is a way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ... In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."  In an ideal world, we would live entirely independent of animals, and would not take advantage of their natural processes. But the definition acknowledges that it is not possible for every individual to completely avoid all forms of exploitation. Because many crops, in the mass quantity needed, are difficult to cultivate naturally, they rely on bees which are taken, in their hives, on backs of trucks, long distances across California, USA. This is known as migratory bee-keeping. In this thought-provoking episode, Niall delves into the contentious topic of animal welfare and the perceived hypocrisy of meat consumption. The discussion is prompted by a message from a vegan listener who challenges the inconsistency of loving pets while consuming animals as food.Niall begins by presenting findings from a survey commissioned by Future Normal and The Vegan Society, revealing that nearly half of meat-eaters in Britain feel hypocritical for loving certain animals, such as dogs, while consuming others, such as pigs. The survey highlights the internal conflict experienced by many individuals who grapple with guilt and contradictory values regarding animal welfare.Listeners weigh in on the debate, offering diverse perspectives on the ethical implications of meat consumption and animal care. Some callers argue that consuming meat while claiming to care about animals constitutes hypocrisy, emphasizing the need for individuals to align their actions with their professed values. They advocate for transitioning to a cruelty-free lifestyle and adopting ethical dietary choices that prioritize animal welfare.Conversely, other callers push back against the notion of labeling meat-eaters as hypocrites, asserting that loving pets and consuming meat are not mutually exclusive behaviors. They contend that many meat-eaters genuinely care about animal welfare and support humane farming practices, challenging the oversimplification of complex dietary choices. As the discussion unfolds, Niall facilitates a respectful exchange of viewpoints, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own attitudes towards animal welfare and dietary habits. In the wrap-up, Niall reflects on the nuanced nature of the debate, acknowledging the challenges inherent in reconciling personal values with societal norms and cultural practices. He emphasizes the importance of continued dialogue and introspection in addressing issues related to animal welfare and ethical consumption.

Astrid Prevost is an ethical vegan and aspiring dietician. Those boundaries are being tested now, by a cooking class that demands Astrid use animal products or risk failing. This is what happened to Mathias during a preventive incarceration. He was left with no access to vegan meals during 11 months, and sometimes could not eat anything for days as all dishes were cooked with dairy or eggs. Although he was in perfect health before being held in custody, he came out of detention malnourished and with several nutrient deficiencies. Today, Mathias and his lawyer are taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights: if they win, this will have consequences in all 46 member countries of the Council of Europe. Hannah Coyne, Campaigns Manager from The Vegan Society joins me on this week's episode to chat about The Vegan Society's 'Live Vegan for Less' campaign. Many people still believe that vegan food is always more expensive than non-vegan food. Whilst some of the latest plant-based alternatives to meat and cheese are exciting, the cost can also add up. We know from experience that being vegan doesn't have to break the bank. Live Vegan for Less aims to demonstrate a more cost-effective way of preparing nutritious vegan meals, showing that vegan living can be affordable for all. Casper spoke to Claire Insley, spokesperson for the Vegan Society of Aotearoa, about the impact of our diets on climate change and how it might be possible to reduce emissions by having more people transition to plant-based.
