We have to spend our time learning. And our knowledge grows with one exposure at a time. We can speed up the process if we have examples to follow or get really focused but it still requires effort. No matter how old we become. Self-care is no different. If you’re feeling like you’re doing self-care wrong, you aren’t! It takes time to understand your intangible needs. The needs that are hidden beneath the surface and can’t always be verbalized. ”P.S. You’re doing great!Support the show (http://bit.ly/SelfCareDiaryTipJar)

I've been feeling what Michelle Obama has been feeling. A low grade depression that has become an undercurrent that ends up coloring everything around me. It has manifested outwardly in several ways. Most notably, I haven't been as consistent with posting podcast episodes because at the end of the day I have to ask myself, what will help me to feel 1% better? On most days it hasn't been trying to make sense of my self-care or emotions or actions or thoughts and then recording it for the world to hear. ”P.S. Or do I just keep moving forward and improvise? Today I left my phone in my car and by choice, it was 4 hours before I retrieved it again. I didn’t realize I was addicted to it, not really, until this moment.”P.S. You’re doing great!Support the show (http://bit.ly/SelfCareDiaryTipJar)

I’m Present-Focused by nature so it was different to allow myself to slip into Past-Focused mode and just stay there. If these concepts are foreign to you, never fear, check out previous episodes because I go into more details! I’ve just been in a state where I just haven’t wanted to do real-time reflection. It can actually get a bit exhausting when you’re constantly asking yourself, “What does this meaaaaaaan?” Sometimes it doesn’t mean anything at all.”P.S. Because why not? I was processing some pretty heavy emotions and they weren’t the kind that you just snap out of. I think we feel as though we need to “get better quick” because it’s uncomfortable for the people around us or we don’t want to be a burden but I let my emotions be exactly what they were. I didn’t water down what I was feeling. I didn’t feel like I needed to “be a certain way” because here’s one thing I feel confidently in: my “too much”ness is just the right amount. You can handle me at that level or not at all. Part of self-care for me is not apologizing for myself.”P.S. You’re doing great!Support the show (http://bit.ly/SelfCareDiaryTipJar)

I was feeling a lot of emotions and most of it was coming from conversations I was having, and I had just had enough. I know myself. I have a certain threshold and I had reached it. I didn’t want to have to be mindful of the words I was saying. I didn’t want to have to be overly aware of someone else’s emotional baggage and try to compensate for it. I didn’t want to have to care or be nurturing for anyone else because I was the one who needed the nurturing. And only I know what I truly need.”P.S. Don’t worry. I delivered them with a mask and gloves. I even said so right on the postcard to alleviate all fears. Pre-Covid days I would have actually knocked on doors but I had to get creative because I like knowing who my neighbors are. It’s also been harder to meet new people in general because meetups are happening online and people aren’t as receptive to chatting up a stranger out in the world, even if you’re both wearing masks. So the postcard was my way of saying hello first."P.S. You’re doing great!Support the show (http://bit.ly/SelfCareDiaryTipJar)

Really looking at what was coming in and deciding whether it was something I valued enough to actually stop and read RIGHT THEN. Since I’m not really on social media — I try but can never be consistent — email is where my dopamine gets the most hits. It’s why I’m on a gazillion email lists. It’s why I have a graveyard of PDFs that I never actually read but downloaded anyway just to see what people have to say. I love reading interesting things but I started to do an audit and realized that there were only maybe 5 or 6 emails from strangers that I actually looked forward to. The rest were just filler. It felt like noise. If I never received another email I probably wouldn’t miss it. So I decided to raise my standards as an experiment.”P.S. Celebration is not something that is locked into a certain day or time. There shouldn’t be a 24-hour expiration date. I like to think that it’s beyond. We have a tendency to pinpoint the hold up in our lives to ONE thing. Why? I haven’t got a clue, but one thing feels more manageable. One thing is often more painful than others in our lives at any given moment so it rises to the top of our minds. My question for you today is this: How are you deciding what’s valuable? What is it based on? We all have a point of reference that we’re using and I want to challenge all of us to burn it to the ground. I realized that I can be guilty of deciding what something is worth based on what feels realistic instead of how I want things to be. I typically want things to be over the top! It means that you are not required to need less. And no one else is either. That fact doesn’t change no matter the role you may be playing. Boss. Parent. Spouse. Friend. Child. In fact, it is not you who is selfish when you understand that you are at 85% and you need to do things to help you gain that 15% back. I can always count the ways but I’ve found that I can’t let my thoughts stop there. Things are never that black and white. There is always the ability to change, especially one’s mind, so in a way, there’s never really any threat to my freedom. Not ever. And that speaks directly to how we can approach our self-care. It doesn’t have to be this rigid idea in our lives. It doesn’t have to look one way. It can be whatever it needs to be on any given day because we are humans with human needs."P.S. She’s utterly fabulous, but the question, “Does this bring me joy?” has never really resonated with me. I actually like to ask, “Why does this bring me joy?” which you can hear more about in Episode 033 because it digs a little bit deeper than the surface. On any given day anything can bring me joy. A chocolate chip cookie fits the bill. But if I’m able to figure out why on THIS particular day in THIS particular moment something brings me joy, I’m able to replicate it. There is more than one way to reach joy and just like Pokemon, I want to connect them all. I just moved and I’m in the middle of some fun decluttering, which reminded me of another question I like to ask myself. “Do I love it enough to want to wear it every single day?”"P.S. I can’t fake it anymore. Seriously. If I go one day without 8 hours, the deficit is so great that I am literally a walking zombie. A cute zombie but I don’t want my thoughts to be the equivalent of “Braaainz.” When you are a night owl living in a daylight world, it can be hard out here in these circadian rhythm streets. So enough is enough. Today has been a “hitting snooze every 5 minutes” kind of day on all the random naps I’ve been taking. Getting just enough sleep to help me have just enough juice until the next responsibility. This is no way to live. And the crazy thing is that this is all avoidable."P.S. The first thought to pop into my head was, “You are superhuman!” because there was no way that I could have completed what she completed within the same amount of hours. I shared my thought immediately and she reminded me that I had packed my apartment, moved items from one place to another, and unpacked all in one day so I was superhuman too. We just have different strengths. This idea hasn’t left my mind all day."P.S. You’re doing great!Support the show (http://bit.ly/SelfCareDiaryTipJar)

And one of the things I’m MOST excited about is activating what Gretchen Rubin calls “The Clean Slate.” In her book all about habits, Better Than Before, she mentions that a new situation makes it much easier to change habits. If you move to a new city, change jobs or schools, or have a new routine, you no longer have your old cues. The things that trigger certain behaviors."P.S. You're doing great! When people can walk away from you: let them walk. It’s another way of saying, “Don’t try and force a relationship. If someone is not willing to stay in it, release them. Those that are meant to stay…will.” I had a recent conversation where the topic of friendship came up and I realized that I was still a bit conflicted over how well I’m maintaining relationships as I age. It seemed to be so much easier when I was younger but now in my late 30s it’s just different. So it requires adjusting your expectations."P.S. The reason why some things are working in my life and why some things aren’t. Whether we are aware or not, we all start things off with intentions. Relationships. Businesses. Hobbies. Whatever. We create a fundamental base level of boundaries. This is what being successful in this looks like. These are the things I don’t want. And until we reevaluate those boundaries, we process every experience through that lens. If something is rubbing us the wrong way…it probably isn’t what you originally had in mind."P.S. A Deep Work day with lots of mental energy, and because of that, I had to pull out all the tricks to keep my mind focused and engaged as the hours started to tick by. Have you ever felt, “I just don’t want to do this!” Not forever, mind you. But just…not today. Except you can’t push it off. When those moments arrive, I like to pull out the alarm on my phone."P.S. Our frustrations. Our concerns. Our unmet needs. Onto other people. It might feel good in the moment but we have to be careful of just how much we’re dumping, especially if they aren’t professionals trained to handle it. Be honest. Is it a grocery store bag amount or is it the amount of bags used in the TV Show Hoarders? We can all handle a little bit of other people’s stuff. That’s what being in community is all about. On a good day our bags are never so full of our own stuff that we can’t take a little bit of someone else’s but if you know you’re having a Hoarder level day, it’s time to self-soothe."P.S. During your last day, did you pee when you needed to? We’ve all been there. We have to go….so bad. You’re mentally singing, “I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go right now,” but you don’t. Because you’re in a meeting. Or you’re in a conversation. Or you’re driving. Or you’re teaching. Or you’re taking care of a little one. Or you are at the dinner table. Peeing when you need to pee is your first defense of making sure that your needs are met. Every time that you don’t, you are unconsciously telling yourself that your needs don’t matter."P.S. That’s why I created a self-care motivator framework that’s easy to understand and can be a game-changer. It definitely was for me. There are three motivators based on your relationship with time. You can listen to Episode 060 to learn about being future-focused. Episode 066 is all about being present-focused. Today, we go over the final motivator…being Past-Focused."P.S. I was certain that there was no coming back from it. Why oh why didn’t I do this or that? It happened as recently as last week. Listen to Episode 057. I had seriously weakened my self-trust with a decision I had made. But I’m happy to report that I got through it. Cue the confetti! I focused on being strategic about the end result that I ultimately wanted. I just did the very next thing that I could do. And then the next thing. And eventually, it worked out. I’m convinced that it will ALWAYS work out, no matter what our thing is, even in the current world that we are in, because there is always the next thing that you can do."Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dionneandselfcare/Let’s be pen pals at hello@dionneandselfcare.comP.S.
