Today, Mardi Winder-Adams speaks with Deborah Greenhut, who brings both a personal and professional lens to the world of caregiving. Deborah, the author of The Hoarder's Wife and host of The Share Giving Secret podcast, shares her own story of going through divorce at 60 after decades of caring for a husband with hoarding disorder and several cognitive diagnoses. What makes Deborah's experience especially relatable is the very human way she discusses the hidden and evident challenges that come with being a caregiver, especially when your partner's issues aren't always visible to others.Together, Mardi and Deborah unpack how different it can feel to care for someone dealing with mental health or cognitive issues compared to those with clear-cut physical illnesses. Deborah points out that these "hidden caregiver" roles often carry a double burden: not only do you have to manage the complexities and lack of predictability at home, but you also deal with limited or virtually no understanding from friends, family, or even professionals who might not recognize the true extent of what goes on behind closed doors. The conversation gets real about burnout and those moments when you feel completely alone, overwhelmed, and like no one else could possibly pick up the slack. Deborah talks honestly about the guilt and resentment that can creep in, and how easy it is to convince yourself that if you just try a little harder, everything might get better. She urges listeners not to wait until they're completely depleted before seeking help, and shares her advice for figuring out which areas of life are being most affected. This episode serves as a comforting reminder that nobody is meant to shoulder these responsibilities on their own. Deborah offers not just practical tips for managing stress but also a compassionate perspective for anyone struggling with the idea of stepping back or even leaving a relationship that has become unsustainable due to caregiving demands. Mardi and Deborah's talk is supportive and down-to-earth, making it a reassuring listen for anyone going through tough times as a caregiver, and a useful one for those looking for ways to lighten their load and care for themselves in the process.About the Guest:Deborah Greenhut's long marriage to a mentally disordered man changed her role to family caregiver. In Deborah's words, “Our conflict helped me uncover a missing piece in the puzzle of resilience”. In 2022, at age 70, she published a novel, “The Hoarder's Wife,” based on her story.Deborah wants to reach more struggling caregivers through public speaking. During her 50-year professional career, she has spoken on communication in academic, corporate, university, and non-profit settings. Following her divorce at age 60, she began to focus on caring to help preserve the resilience of caregivers have. Through her Substack publication she offers suggestions on negotiating with your family to prevent caregiver burnout and my podcast, “The Sharegiving Secret” amplifies those ideas with solutions. To schedule a conversation with Deborah: https://deborahgreenhut.com/ - request a complimentary session. To connect with Deborah:Website: www.deborahgreenhut.com Website: www.therationalcaregiver.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deborahgreenhut01/ Substack:https://nonnegotiablesforcaregivers.substack.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=substack_profile Substack: https://substack.com/@deborahgreenhut?utm_source=user-menu YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DeborahGreenhut-q4kAbout the Host: Mardi Winder-Adams is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. In this thought-provoking episode of Mark and Pete, titled “Radical Reform, World's Oldest Person, and Hoarder's Dilemma”, we dive into three headline-grabbing stories shaking the UK and beyond. First, we tackle the political earthquake caused by Nigel Farage and Reform UK, whose recent local election surge has left the Conservative Party reeling. What does this mean for Britain's political future? Next, we celebrate the remarkable life of Ethel Caterham, the newly crowned oldest person in the world at 115 years old. What's her secret to longevity, and what lessons can we draw from a life that spans two world wars, a pandemic, and the rise and fall of empires? Finally, we explore the WHO's classification of hoarding as a mental disorder, and what it means for how society views clutter, consumerism, and mental health. Is it time to clear the attic—or the stigma?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

In this candid episode, Warren and CeeCee dive deep into conference behaviors that drive HR pros to the brink of madness. From the Virginia SHRM conference comes Warren's unfiltered observations about attendees who disrupt sessions with incessant talking, take photos of every slide (complete with audible shutter sounds), and block hallways with impromptu meetings. The conversation reveals how technology use, spatial awareness, and self-restraint around free swag items have become defining elements of professional gatherings. The episode takes a fascinating turn when CeeCee makes a surprising confession about letting her SHRM certification lapse during her pregnancy. Now facing the daunting prospect of retaking the certification exam, she weighs the professional benefits against the considerable effort required. Warren offers counterpoint perspectives from his own certification journey, prompting a deeper discussion about the real-world value of these professional credentials. Their comparison of different certification levels reveals intriguing insights about test formats and preparation approaches that will resonate with anyone contemplating HR certification.Between stories about dental anxiety, AI-powered heckler detection, and the cultural significance of limited-edition company merchandise, this episode captures the authentic, unfiltered reality of HR life. Sara Dangerfield and her husband, Dan, lead Journey Church in Minot, ND. Fun fact: Sara's sister is married to Stephen's brother -- so Sara and Stephen are basically in-law...in-laws (or something like that). Sara recently published her first book -- Leading Spiritual Hoarders. In this episode, we talk about the importance of being a disciple who makes disciples. We talk about how people become spiritual hoarders by keeping the good news about Jesus to themselves instead of sharing it with others. Sara shares practical advice, like creating a list of 100 people you see throughout a typical week -- to determine if they are following Jesus, not a a follower, or unknown -- in order to be intentional with conversations. “There's something in the atmosphere that makes everything seem exaggerated.”Talking About Powell & Pressburger's 1947 film Black Narcissus with our guest, screenwriter James HandelIn this episode of Movies We Like, screenwriter James Handel joins hosts Andy Nelson and Pete Wright to discuss Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1947 masterpiece Black Narcissus, along with Handel's fascinating career writing genre-bending films like The Last Horror Movie, The Hoarder, and his latest psychological dramedy The Trouble with Jessica. From Philosophy to FilmBefore diving into Black Narcissus, Handel shares candid insights about his journey from philosophy student to screenwriter, starting with an unproduced vampire script and eventually leading to successful collaborations with directors Julian Richards and Matt Winn. He discusses how his background in philosophy influences his approach to moral dilemmas and character psychology in his screenplays, particularly evident in The Trouble with Jessica's darkly comic exploration of ethics and human nature.A Masterpiece of Psychological DramaThe conversation then turns to Black Narcissus, examining how Powell and Pressburger crafted this visually stunning psychological drama about Anglican nuns attempting to establish a convent in the Himalayas. The group discusses the film's groundbreaking technical achievements, with Jack Cardiff's Oscar-winning Technicolor cinematography bringing the entirely studio-shot production to vivid life. They explore how the film masterfully depicts the psychological deterioration of the nuns as they struggle with repressed desires, loss of faith, and the overwhelming power of their environment, all while maintaining a remarkable balance between expressionism and restraint.Black Narcissus remains a masterclass in psychological storytelling and visual craftsmanship, demonstrating how thoughtful restraint and artistic innovation can create an unforgettable cinematic experience. We thoroughly enjoyed diving deep into this classic with James Handel, whose own work carries forward the tradition of examining complex moral questions through compelling drama.Film SundriesWatch our conversation on YouTube!Watch this on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at LetterboxdScript OptionsTheatrical trailerOriginal Material Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Jess Kidd was brought up in London as part of a large family from county Mayo and has been praised for her unique fictional voice. Her debut, Himself, was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards in 2016. She won the Costa Short Story Award the same year. Her second novel, The Hoarder (published as Mr. Flood's Last Resort in the U.S.), was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year 2019. Both books were BBC Radio 2 Book Club Picks. Her Victorian detective tale Things in Jars, was released to critical acclaim. Jess's work has been described as ‘Gabriel García Márquez meets The Pogues.' Jess' first children's book Everyday Magic came out in February 2021, published by Canongate. The fourth novel, The Night Ship, will be published in August 2022. She is also developing her own original TV projects with leading U.K. and international TV producers. Kidd (The Next Ship) pivots to cozies with this delightful series launch about a nun who forsakes her vows to search for a former novice. In 1954, Sister Nora Breen's friend and former trainee, Frieda Brogan, abruptly stops sending her letters. Frieda's last known address is the Gulls Nest, a forlorn boarding house in the English town of Gore-on-Sea, and a frightened Nora asks to be released from her monastery after 30 years to track Frieda down. Nora takes a room at the Gulls Nest, ingratiates herself with its ragtag collection of boarders, and soon realizes she's not the only one concealing a secret past. As she starts to dig into Frieda's stay there, other boarders begin to die under unusual circumstances, making her wonder whether Frieda might have met a similar fate. At first a thorn in the side of Detective Inspector Rideout, who's assigned to investigate the deaths, the intelligent and outspoken Nora gradually gains the policeman's respect. Elegant prose, vivid characterizations, and a fascinating protagonist add up to a thoroughly enjoyable mystery. Readers will be eager for the sequel.

The squad investigates the murder of Bobbi O'Rourke, a book author who'd written about her life as a teen prostitute. Carisi finds out the victim was just posing as the writer for public appearances because no one has ever seen the real Bobbi. Fin traces the royalty payments to the home of Joe and Ben Edelman (Judd Hirsch and Wallace Shawn), two bickering, old Jewish men who have lived as hoarders and shut-ins for decades. Benson learns there is no Bobbi; Ben wrote the sexually-explicit book under the pseudonym. But before they let the brothers go, Carisi discovers their dead mother's body in a locked freezer. ADA Peter Stone charges the Edelmans with murder. Based on the book, Olivia believes Ben might be a past sexual assault victim. Rollins learns Joe was also molested, but the brothers have never told each other about their trauma. At trial, Joe takes the blame for smothering their dying mother decades ago - then has a massive heart attack. Visiting his older brother's death bed, Ben finally shares his secret. We're talking about Special Victims Unit season twenty episode ten "Alta Kockers."
