This week on Queer News with Anna DeShawn — we're talking legal wins and loses, representation on-screen, and unmatched excellence on the basketball court. A U.S. federal appeals court deals a blow to Trump's anti-trans military ban, affirming the right of our trans siblings to serve with pride. But across the pond, the UK Supreme Court drops a devastating ruling stripping trans people of legal recognition.  In culture, we lift up the groundbreaking TLC show Jay & Pamela — a love story breaking barriers around disability, queerness, and visibility. We mourn the cancellation of Clean Slate, Laverne Cox's bold sitcom, and celebrate WNBA icon Candace Parker as the LA Sparks announce her jersey retirement this Pride Month. And to close, we honor Black lesbian poet Pat Parker for Lesbian Visibility Week with her searing classic, my lover is a woman. This episode is a ride through pain, pride, power — and the poetry that keeps us grounded. Let's get into it, family.

#374 Clean Slate or Public Record? Should Juvenile Offenses Be Erased at 18?

The Niall Boylan Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2025 89:39

In this episode, Niall asks: Should juvenile criminal records be wiped clean once someone turns 18, or should past offenses follow them into adulthood? The discussion is sparked by a growing debate over whether young offenders deserve a fresh start or if their past mistakes should remain on record. Some callers think everyone deserves a second chance. They argue that teenagers make mistakes, and those shouldn't define them for the rest of their lives. A minor offense at 15—like shoplifting or a fight—shouldn't ruin job prospects or future opportunities. They believe wiping juvenile records at 18 allows young people to move on, contribute to society, and avoid being trapped in a cycle of crime. However, some acknowledge that serious crimes should still be treated differently, with records sealed but not erased immediately. While other callers feel actions have consequences. They argue that turning 18 doesn't magically erase what someone did at 16, especially if the crime was serious. Employers, colleges, and even the justice system should have access to juvenile records to assess character and risk. Some believe that instead of automatic record-clearing, cases should be reviewed individually—while minor offenses may be erased, more serious ones should stay on record.Niall reflects on the passionate debate, weighing both perspectives on fairness versus accountability. Should we allow young offenders to turn over a new leaf at 18, or does wiping their records risk ignoring patterns of criminal behavior? The conversation leaves listeners with an important question: Where should we draw the line between rehabilitation and responsibility?

In this episode, Danni sits down with Chris Gimple from Clean Slate Clinic to talk about some of the things that shocked him in early sobriety. One of the biggest surprises was getting comfortable with boredom. Without alcohol, life can feel a little dull at times, especially when we've spent so long caught up in chaos. Chris opens up about how many of us unknowingly become accustomed to that sense of constant drama, and how adjusting to a calmer life takes time.Disturbed sleep patterns were another challenge, something many people experience when first quitting alcohol. Chris also describes what he calls the “lost puppy syndrome”—that feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself when drinking is no longer part of your life. But as the brain begins to reboot and adjust, things start to shift. He talks about the power of delayed gratification and how putting in the work leads to real, lasting rewards. Most importantly, he reminds us that change doesn't happen without action, and that a relapse doesn't mean you're back to square one and that it can be a therapeutic tool. After NBC screwed up Charles Star's booking by dropping The Hunting Party series premiere weeks early, it's fitting (?) that he should, instead, join us for a Prime Video original movie about a scheduling snafu: the Nicholas Stoller-written and -directed You're Cordially Invited, starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon at war over a wedding venue. Did it leave us wanting to toss rice, or toss our cookies? Listen to find out. Around The Dial takes us to Clean Slate, The Hunting Party (Charles watched it so he might as well warn the community about it), Band Of Brothers, and just a whisper about the imminent third season of Reacher. Sarah pitches "Forks" from The Bear for induction into The Canon. Then, after naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time that tests our TV and movie knowledge SAT-style. In this episode, hosts Ash and Dusty explore the challenges and opportunities that the New Year presents for individuals with ADHD. They delve into the concept of clean slate thinking and how it can be both a trap and a motivational tool. While traditional New Year's resolutions can often feel overwhelming due to heightened expectations, Ash shares a personal practice of choosing a word to guide intentions throughout the year. This approach helps in maintaining focus and aligning actions with personal values, without the pressure of strict resolutions. The conversation shifts to the difficulties of maintaining routines amidst disruptions, such as holidays or life changes, and how these disruptions can significantly impact those with ADHD. Dusty introduces the idea of an "11-month year," allowing January to serve as an adjustment period rather than a time for rigorous goal-setting. Both hosts emphasize the importance of curiosity, awareness, and non-judgment in managing routines and personal goals. They encourage listeners to find humor and joy in setting unique, personal intentions that align with what truly matters to them, rather than succumbing to societal pressures of productivity.
