Who Are Ya?

Blackpool was the scene of our first ever Who Are Ya episode, where we joined an Anti-Oyston protest march. Thanks to the hard work, dedication and persistence of Blackpool FC supporters, they Oystons have at long last been ousted.  Nearly two years after we recorded the first Who Are Ya, we joined the Blackpool fans again - as the Bloomfield Road turnstiles welcomed back so many old friends. This episode is different from our usual club-focussed approach as we explore football’s relationship with tragedy. The history of football has unfortunately been littered with tragic events, but has football changed how it deals with death? Can football be a force for good in dealing with grief, or has the media turned death into spectacle?

Crewe Alexandra are known all across the UK for their investment in young talent and producing the stars of the future.  The Railwaymen have had mixed fortunes in League Two this season, but fans have an opportunity to directly air their grievances to the manager David Artell.  However, grey clouds hang overhead, as fans come to terms with the aftermath of the football sexual abuse scandal. How has this changed things at Gresty Road? We went to find out.

In this episode we speak to an International Manager. Justin Walley was the manager of the Matebeleland football team in the 2018 conifa world cup. His is a football journey that’s taken him from Leicestershire to Zimbabwe via setting up a team Latvia and travelling the world in the name of football . His book ‘One football no nets’ the story of Matebeleland’s journey to the alternative world cup in London is out now. We chat about the book, CONIFA, meeting Bruce Grobbelear in a car park and what it is that inspired Justin to travel the world in search of football. Ben flies to Rome in the latest episode of Who Are Ya to see Lazio in action. After the game, every time he tells people about his football experience, it always gets the same response. Brentford are not a football club that you'd expect to be in the top flight. The last time they were there was in the 1930s. Queen’s Park FC are Scotland’s oldest football club. A truly unique beast, Queen’s Park are not your typical Scottish League Two side – not only do they play at Hampden Park, they’re also the only amateur side in Scotland’s professional leagues. But their future at Hampden, and thus their amateur status, may be under threat due to circumstances beyond their control. We travelled to Glasgow to find out from fans of The Spiders what makes their club so special, from their traditions, to the people who make Queen's Park what it is. Hello and welcome to Who Are Ya, a monthly podcast about the football clubs of Great Britain.  Well, that’s what it was. We’ve decided to change it up a little, shower you with more content.  An episode every month isn’t as frequent as we’d like, so we came up with the idea of additional episodes - outside of the usual Who Are Ya pod format that we know and love. We’re going to be introducing an additional podcast every month that hopefully adds a bit more colour and depth to the issues we talk about on the podcast. These could be interviews, casual conversations, mini documentaries or something else entirely. We think these will be worth listening to if you’re a fan of what we do at all - It goes without saying that if we didn’t think the episodes were worth a listen we wouldn’t release them for you.  For our first Who Are Ya Talks… this is the full interview I recorded with Jim Keoghan, who featured heavily in our protest clubs episode and is the author of Punk Football. You may have heard some of this in the episode, but we had a really interesting chat so here is the full thing. After that, Dave and I recently spoke about Who Are Ya on one of our favourite football podcasts - A Team of John O Sheas. They basically gave us a platform to share the creative process and our thoughts behind this podcast. A clip from that will be coming after the interview.

Formed, for various reasons, in protest against another club, these fans were forced to make a horrid decision when they started a new team. We talk to FC United fans about life as a non-league protest club, to AFC Liverpool's founder, to a once disgruntled now happy Northwich fan and to fan-owned club expert and author Jim Keoghan. We've talked to many fans who aren't happy with the current situation at their club, these fans went through that too, but now they've done something to change that - let's see how they're getting on and ask the fans of Britain's protest clubs… Who Are Ya?
