The insurance industry often hires for pedigree: the right degree, the right school, and a polished background. But my guest, Misty Carson, proves that grit outperforms a resume every time. Her journey starts in extreme poverty in a trailer park, navigating life as a teen mom, and leads all the way to the top of the insurance game.In this episode, Misty shares the raw reality of how she went from surviving to thriving. We discuss how she translated the hustle of the car sales floor into insurance success, why non-traditional talent is the industry's biggest missed opportunity, and how she turned being "battle-tested" into her greatest competitive advantage. This is the story of what happens when you refuse to let your circumstances define your future.▶▶ Sign Up For Your Free Discovery Callhttps://calendly.com/aneary/strategy-sessionKEY MOMENTS(00:00:00) She Went From Poverty to Top Producer (00:00:56) The Origin Story: Escaping Poverty and Defying the Odds (00:07:06) The Turning Point: Learning to Bet on Yourself (00:09:34) How Selling Cars Prepared Her to Dominate Insurance (00:18:49) Why the Best Producers Don't Always Have "Perfect" Resumes (00:24:28) "Battle-Tested": Turning a Hard Past Into a Powerful BrandCONNECT WITH ANDY NEARY

It is 1927, and life in Mexico is changing with alarming speed. A nation that once found its strength and identity in faith is now facing a wave of hostility. The government has adopted a harsh, openly anti-Catholic stance, determined to uproot the very beliefs that shaped the hearts of the people. At that time, more than 90% of Mexicans saw the Catholic faith as the center of their lives. It was woven into every part of their story. Children were baptized in the Church, educated in its schools, married within its walls, cared for in its hospitals, and guided by its priests at the hour of death. For nearly five centuries, to be Mexican and to be Catholic were inseparable truths. But the government under President Plutarco Elías Calles set out to sever that connection by any means necessary. He seemed to ask himself, “How can I destroy the faith of an entire nation?” And under his leadership, one of the most brutal persecutions of the Church began. Foreign missionary priests were expelled. Catholic schools were shut down. Churches were padlocked, making the celebration of Mass illegal. Priests and nuns were forbidden to wear their habits or cassocks in public—doing so meant immediate arrest.Yet, despite the fear and danger, the faithful refused to bow. Their courage grew stronger in the face of oppression. Among them was a priest named Fr. Miguel Pro, a man whose bravery became a beacon of hope. Defying every government order, he continued to minister in secret. He baptized the newborn, prepared couples for marriage, taught the faith, and offered the sacraments whenever and wherever he could. Though police searched for him relentlessly, he continued his mission with joy and determination until at last he was captured.Fr. Miguel would be sentenced to die by firing squad. Before the soldiers aimed their rifles at the priest they asked if he had any final words. He raised his arms in the shape of a cross and cried out with unwavering courage: “LONG LIVE CHRIST THE KING!”The government printed the image of execution on the front pages of newspapers across the country, hoping to fill Catholics with fear. Instead, it filled them with strength. His final cry ignited a fire of faith that oppression could not extinguish. And so today, we remember a truth that Fr. Miguel's life and death proclaim clearly: only Christ truly satisfies the human heart. The joy and peace we long for will never be found in the false promises of our age. They cannot be found in money, possessions, status, or comfort. These things fade, disappoint, and leave us wanting more. But Christ never fails.Christ never fades. Christ alone is our peace. Christ alone is our joy. All other claimants to our hearts eventually fall silent. Only Jesus endures.VIVA CRISTO REY! --- Help Spread the Good News --- Father Brian's homilies are shared freely thanks to generous listeners like you. Dr. Aaron Hartman is a triple-board-certified physician, clinical researcher, and founder of Richmond Integrative & Functional Medicine. His medical career took a radical turn when conventional medicine failed his adopted daughter, Anna, who was born with cerebral palsy. Determined to find answers beyond pharmaceuticals and surgery, he dove into functional medicine—and watched his daughter make what specialists said was impossible progress. That experience reshaped his entire view of healthcare. Today, Dr. Hartman helps patients across the country reclaim their health when traditional medicine says “there’s nothing more we can do.” His new book, “ UnCurable: From Hopeless Diagnosis to Defying All Odds,” shares his personal and professional transformation and reveals what modern medicine often overlooks about the body’s ability to heal. We made some progress in the bracketing process for the NCAA playoffs this year! Every team that earned a first-round bye was actually awarded one. Seems like a low bar when you talk about it that way, but ... if there were a big sign up in the committee room, it would say, "1 year without giving a first-round bye to a team which didn't earn it via NPI." In the end, this bracket has a lot to like -- even though a number of teams are in the NCAA playoffs for at least the fifth consecutive year, 10 teams, in fact -- there are still a lot of new matchups. Susquehanna vs. W&J isn't seen very often. Concordia (Wis.) and Coe? LaGrange and Framingham State certainly not. Hanover and Grove City? How about the MIAA-WIAC crossover games? We talk with John Snell, the NCAA football championships committee chair for Division III, and he tells us what was important for the committee this year, and yes, a good part of it was restricting as many flights as possible and removing the chance of them from this bracket. Somehow, we knew this would happen, and wrote a whole song about it! Yes, there's a new parody in this edition of the podcast.  What are the best first-round games and the best second-round games? What team playing in the first round could advance a couple of rounds in this bracket? Also, what is semifinal sauce? And what would the Texas teams have to do, in theory, to keep from having to play each other so early in the playoffs? We hear you, we feel you, we ask the question. Plus, we take a bunch of your mailbag questions. We also hand out game balls, bring you through the crazy stats of the week, highlight the key goings-on in Region 1 through Region 6, get you games to look forward to next week. And we take your questions in the mailbag segment. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

Defying Conventions: Women's Courage, Agency, and Healing in Historical Fiction with Cinda Gault

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2025 25:08

On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with novelist and scholar Cinda Gault about how historical fiction can restore women's voices and model resilient mindsets. From Isabel Gunn (who disguised herself to work the Canadian fur trade) to the turbulent reforms of the 1970s, Cinda explains how story lets us “step into another consciousness,” building empathy, agency, and practical courage. We examine autonomy, meaningful work, creative risk-taking, and how today's listeners can challenge quiet social constraints without glorifying conflict. This conversation is direct, reflective, and designed for searchers interested in women's history, trauma-informed healing, creative practice, and mental well-being.   About the guest  : Cinda Gault is a Canadian novelist and scholar whose books—This Godforsaken Place, A Small Compass, and Everything I Hope For—center women who defy expectations and choose meaningful lives. Her background spans domestic-violence advocacy, corrections, and a PhD focused on Canadian women's writing.   Key takeaways: Story as empathy technology: Fiction lets readers inhabit another mind, shifting beliefs faster than argument and supporting emotional healing and mental flexibility. Agency over approval: Gault's protagonists define meaning for themselves, accept mistakes, and iterate—useful for reducing shame spirals and building resilient habits. Historical context, modern tools: Legal and cultural shifts (education access, financial autonomy, reproductive rights in Canada) expanded options; listeners can pair this progress with personal boundaries and values. Defying quiet constraints: Even without explicit barriers, conventions around caregiving, career, and creativity can box people in; naming them creates space for choice. Courage as a daily practice: Small risks (new skills, new roles) build identity strength—adventure is often a mindset before it's a voyage. Research to reclamation: Unearthing figures like Isabel Gunn or referencing Annie Oakley reframes women not as exceptions but as agents within their eras. Craft note for creators: Real tension (not constant harmony) drives story; in life, anticipate challenges and choose responses aligned with your values. Practical reflection: Ask, “What one step would make my life more meaningful this week?” Then act, review, and adjust.   How to connect with the guest   Website: search for “Cinda Gault” to find her official site, book details, and a free History of Storytelling webinar. We are always asking ourselves, asking others, or others are asking us: what can I do to fight FOR democracy and fight AGAINST Trump's autocracy, dictatorship, and authoritarianism? Glenn sat down with Miles Taylor to discuss a new approach: DEFIANCE.org. Miles has set the standard for standing up to Trump's lawlessness, his threats, and his despicable and insatiable appetite for revenge. Miles decided to create DEFIANCE.org, described as follows: “WHAT CAN I DO?”"We built a club to answer that question. Each month, we give you options to fight back — peacefully, lawfully, and defiantly — against Trump's authoritarian takeover. You choose what missions to support. Then we take action together."DEFIANCE.org is described as: "A CLUB FOR COURAGEOUS AMERICANS"Link to website: https://www.defiance.org/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Beware The Devil's Knot - DogmanIn the rural Truman County of the 1940s, the Dumeyer family—Will, Georgia, and their children Bobby and young Cassandra—lived on a farm bordering the eerie Devil's Knot, a dense, legend-shrouded hollow said to swallow people whole. Will, a fearless hunter, returned from World War II only to face bizarre attacks on their livestock: a massive, bipedal canine-like creature tore apart animals and left enormous tracks. On the opening day of deer season in 1947, Will ventured into the Knot and vanished, leaving Georgia increasingly unhinged as she reported werewolf assaults to skeptical authorities. The community searched everywhere but the Knot, fueling rumors that Will fled his "crazy" wife. Years later, 12-year-old Bobby, burdened with farm chores and known for school pranks, took a risky shortcut through the Knot to reach home before dark, believing his father's spirit protected him. One winter evening, after detention, he returned to find his seven-year-old sister Cassi missing from school. Defying his terrified mother's pleas, Bobby entered the Knot unarmed to search for her, instructing Georgia to alert the sheriff. Deputies followed but found only echoes, glowing red eyes, and unearthly growls in the suffocating darkness. As hope faded, a rifle shot rang out, followed by a howl and Cassi's blood-soaked emergence, whispering only, "He saved me." Bobby was never seen again. The tragedy shattered the family: Georgia and a mute, haunted Cassi were institutionalized, the farm sold, and the Knot's legends swelled with the Dumeyers' names. Tales spread of a protective Bobby—bloodied ghost with a rusted rifle—who guides lost children who call to him. Decades on, journalist Chig Chesterfield, interviewing elderly survivor Gordon Hightower for a Halloween story, uncovers these truths. At 12, Chig himself dared the Knot on a campout dare, emerging shaken after a spectral Bobby led him through horrors, forever binding him to the legend.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support
