An episode from May 2014 with more comedy than the alliterative title would suggest. Dave Hill wanted to frighten himself on purpose, so he flew to northern Mexico to stay with an old college friend who had become the chaplain of a prison the cartels were running themselves. There is a pizza party, a borrowed guitar, and a man with a machete. (Content note: suicidal ideation, suicide) CJ Hostetter graduated into the 2009 economy, moved back in with their divorcing parents, and stopped feeling anything at all. Then a gunshot went off across the street. Tyler Phillips took a pizza order from a caller who volunteered his full name and street address. The street turned out to be real. The hotel business apparently didn't get the memo that everything is supposed to be terrible. Consumers feel squeezed. Credit-card debt keeps climbing. Business travel remains soft. Hotel construction faces the same cost and financing challenges we've discussed for years. Yet hotels keep performing, people keep traveling and owners keep making deals. So what's actually holding this market together? I asked Bruce Ford, SVP at Lodging Econometrics, to help me make sense of it. We talked about why event travel continues to deliver, how hotels can offer deals without destroying their rates and why the biggest opportunity ahead may have less to do with building new hotels. One number caught my attention: Bruce expects the industry to renovate or convert between 325,000 and 375,000 rooms during each of the next couple of years. That could create a very different hotel investment market than many people expect, with major implications for owners, brands, management companies and industry suppliers. Watch my latest #NoVacancyNews conversation with Bruce to hear where he sees the hotel market heading next. Actabl gives you the power to profit. Visit Actabl.com. Wall Street has spent years warning about a recession, weak consumer spending, and an inevitable stock market correction. But what if the data tells a completely different story? In this interview, Chris Galipeau, Head Market Strategist at Franklin Templeton, joins Maggie Lake to explain why the U.S. economy remains far more resilient than many investors believe. He shares why corporate earnings continue to surprise to the upside, why the U.S. consumer is still driving economic growth, and why today's bearish narrative doesn't align with what's happening beneath the surface. Chris also breaks down why AI may become a productivity boom rather than a job killer, where he sees the biggest investment opportunities beyond the Magnificent Seven, why small-cap stocks could outperform, and the one Federal Reserve policy mistake that could threaten the current bull market. Topics discussed: -Why recession fears keep missing the mark -The real outlook for the U.S. economy -Stock market outlook for 2026 -AI investing and corporate productivity -Why earnings matter more than politics or geopolitics -Small-cap stocks vs. the Magnificent Seven -Federal Reserve policy and inflation risks =Where investors should be looking next Whether you're investing for retirement, managing a portfolio, or trying to understand where markets go from here, this conversation offers a data-driven perspective on the economy, stocks, AI, and long-term investing.

Leadership isn't defined by a title, it's revealed through how we serve, connect, and empower others. In Part 2 of our conversation with Dr. DeAngela Burns-Wallace, we dive into her book Made for This and explore how faith, purpose, courage, and authentic relationships shape meaningful leadership. She shares why investing in people always creates lasting impact and how leading with compassion builds stronger communities. From mentoring future leaders to navigating uncertainty with confidence, this episode offers practical wisdom for anyone striving to live and lead with intention. Dr. Burns-Wallace reminds us that our greatest legacy isn't what we accomplish. It's the lives we encourage, uplift, and inspire along the way. Key Takeaways: Leadership begins with relationships, proving that genuine connection creates stronger teams, deeper trust, and more meaningful results than authority alone. Leading through uncertainty requires both courage and compassion, allowing us to make difficult decisions while staying grounded in our values. Everyone has unique gifts and a purpose, and embracing those talents with confidence creates lasting impact in our communities and workplaces. Mentorship and sponsorship change lives by opening doors, encouraging growth, and helping others recognize potential they may not yet see in themselves. The greatest legacy isn't measured by titles or achievements, but by the people we've empowered, the lives we've influenced, and the opportunities we've created for others. Patrick K. O'Donnell, guest author, describes how, in the war's final hours, Robert E. Lee faced a monumental decision: follow Jefferson Davis's orders to scatter his army into the mountains to conduct guerrilla warfare, or surrender. Leechose to put "America first," rejecting the insurgency path to avoid subjecting the South to generations of further destruction. This act of statesmanship led to the meeting at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, where Grantoffered exceptionally favorable terms, allowing Confederate officers to keep their sidearms and horses. The surrender was marked by mutual respect, exemplified by Union General Joshua Chamberlain ordering a salute to the surrendering Confederates as "honor meeting honor." After the war, John Singleton Mosby underwent a radical transformation; he became a close personal friend of Ulysses S. Grant and served as his campaign manager in Virginia. Defying local sentiment, Mosby joined the Republican Party, famously remarking that "hell is being a Republican in Virginia." He later served as a diplomat in Hong Kong, where he fought against human trafficking. In his final years, Mosby befriended a young George S. Patton, and it is believed that Patton's future mastery of maneuver warfare was influenced by the aging partisan's tactical lessons. The story of the "Unvanquished" thus concludes with a narrative of reconciliation, showing how these former shadow warriors helped forge the foundations of modern America and its special operations legacy. The Unvanquished (8)1922
True leadership begins with service, grows through community, and creates opportunities that last for generations. Dr. DeAngela Burns-Wallace shares how her family's legacy of compassion, the wisdom of her grandmother, and her Kansas City roots shaped her journey from public service to leading the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. She reflects the importance of showing up for others, leading with intention, and remembering that meaningful impact is built through relationships, not titles. Throughout the conversation, Dr. DeAngela explores how mentorship, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and collaboration can transform communities and expand opportunity for future generations. She also offers a powerful reminder that rest is an essential part of leadership, allowing us to serve others with greater purpose, clarity, and compassion. Her story is an inspiring call to invest in people, strengthen community, and create a legacy that empowers others to thrive. Key Takeaways: The strongest leaders are those who show up consistently, invest in others, and lead with compassion. Strong relationships, collaboration, and shared purpose are the foundation for building thriving communities. Protecting your time and energy allows you to serve others with greater clarity, purpose, and impact. Sharing knowledge, opening doors, connecting people, and amplifying others can transform lives just as powerfully as funding. Creating access to education, entrepreneurship, and economic mobility helps individuals, families, and communities build a stronger future together. Ronald White, guest author, recounts how, in June 1864, Chamberlain led a perilous frontal assault at Petersburg, where he was struck by a minié ball that traveled through his hips, shattering internal blood vessels and his bladder. Surgeons gave him only a 10% chance of survival, and he wrote a heart-wrenching final farewell to Fanny from his hospital bed. Defying medical expectations, he survived the infection-riddled environment and returned to the field to command a brigade during the final pursuit of Lee's army. At Appomattox, General Grant chose him to preside over the formal surrender ceremony of the Confederate infantry. During this event, Chamberlain sparked decades of controversy by ordering a "marching salute" to the defeated Southern soldiers to honor their courage. This act of reconciliation underscored his belief that the war's end required bringing both sides back together as one nation despite the deep scars of conflict. In this episode of the Dyslexia Explored Podcast, hosts Darius Namdaran and Jo Lee speak with Alex Chaparro, a former realtor of 37 years who became an author and neurodiversity coach. Alex explains how his journal, originally a private operations manual, unexpectedly became his book The Dreamer's Guide to Achieving in Uncertain Times, rooted in erasing limiting labels and rewriting his own narrative. He describes early school experiences of being unable to read, bullying, and creatively hiding difficulties, then a seventh-grade shift where he rapidly improved his reading level. The conversation explores impostor syndrome, perfectionism, disclosure, and redefining labels' “small print.” Alex shares returning to finish college with accommodations, his later ADHD diagnosis, and how self-acceptance helped him lose 200 pounds, regain mobility, and find joy and purpose in coaching. This podcast is sponsored by ivvi. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Political correspondent Ariela Karmel and reporter Amy Spiro join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. It's been an intensive week for lawmakers, reports Karmel, as the government begins dissolving the Knesset to trigger earlier elections and accelerates several controversial pieces of legislation. Karmel discusses the attorney general bill, a final effort by the right-leaning coalition to remove what remains of the only checks and balances on executive power in Israel. Another element of the attorney general legislation is intended to allow elected officials to operate with less scrutiny, says Karmel, making it more difficult to open investigations or indictments against a prime minister or cabinet members. After singer Noam Bettan garnered second place in the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night, Spiro discusses the surprising result, given the intensive politics behind the competition, with several countries that dropped out of the contest in protest of Israel's participation. If Bettan had won first place, Spiro notes that it would have complicated decisions about having Israel host the Eurovision next year, but notes that the song contest has survived other wars, boycotts and geopolitical dramas.
