„Voetbal is alles voor me, voetbal is mijn leven.” Support the show: https://krant.nl/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How great were the FA Cup pioneers — and were Wanderers the first truly great cup team? In this special episode of By Far The Greatest Team, Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney are joined by brilliant football history guest Phil Craig to travel right back to the birth of the FA Cup — from its Victorian amateur origins to the moment football began its journey from gentlemanly pastime to national obsession. This is the story of the world's oldest football competition before it became the FA Cup we know today: no fixed pitch markings, teams changing ends after goals, clubs withdrawing at will, replays, byes, railway journeys, public-school networks, and a cast of extraordinary football pioneers. At the centre of it all stands Charles Alcock, the organiser and visionary behind the competition, and Wanderers, the wandering, aristocratic, brilliantly connected team who dominated the earliest years of the Cup. But this episode is about much more than one club. Graham, Jamie and Phil explore the rise of early FA Cup giants like Royal Engineers, Oxford University, Queen's Park, Old Etonians, Marlow, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Olympic and Blackburn Rovers, tracing how the competition evolved from an amateur southern gentleman's tournament into the proving ground for professionalism, northern power and the modern game. From the first FA Cup final in 1872 to the symbolic working-class breakthrough of Blackburn Olympic in 1883, this is a story of changing rules, changing tactics, changing class structures — and football slowly becoming the people's game. Were Wanderers simply the best connected team of their age, or should they be remembered as one of football's first great sides? The FA Cup was chaotic from the start The early tournament featured withdrawals, walkovers, replays, unusual rules and teams who barely resembled modern clubs. Wanderers were football's first cup specialists With five FA Cup wins in the competition's first seven seasons, Wanderers became the defining team of the FA Cup's earliest era. Charles Alcock helped invent football's competitive future His vision for a national knockout tournament gave football one of its most enduring institutions. The Cup tells the story of football's social shift From public schools and old boys' networks to mill towns, factories and northern professionalism, the FA Cup became a mirror of Victorian Britain. Blackburn Olympic changed everything Their 1883 victory over Old Etonians marked one of the great symbolic turning points in football history. Blackburn Rovers' point against Coventry City has put them within touching distance of Championship safety ahead of a huge midweek of games. Elliott Jackson and Ryan Hildred discuss that and plenty more on the latest episode of Arte et Labore podcast. Though there was disappointment after Bobby Thomas' late equaliser, Rovers extended their gap over the bottom three to five points after results over the weekend. It means they could wrap up survival with a win at Sheffield United and a favour elsewhere. That would give them 10 days to relax rather than sweat over a final-day showdown against Leicester City. Saints barely had to get out of second gear at times, but still got the job done comfortably, with Cyle Larin, Ryan Manning and Cameron Archer on the scoresheet as the unbeaten run stretched to 18 matches in all competitions. The panel discuss a performance built on control, pressing and squad depth, and ask whether Cameron Archer's best display in a Saints shirt could yet give him an important role to play in the final weeks of the season. There's also discussion around rotation, game management, and whether Southampton are now handling this stage of the campaign like a team that knows exactly what it's doing. And then there's the wider picture. With Ipswich slipping up, Saints are now just three points off the automatic promotion places. So has the conversation changed? Is this now a genuine charge for the top two rather than simply protecting a play-off place? The episode also looks ahead to Saturday's trip to Swansea, with score predictions, selection talk, and a sense that momentum is building at exactly the right time.We also share a quick update on the Yellows collection in the TSP Shop, plus the latest on Benali on Tour, which has now gone beyond its fundraising target for Saints Foundation. Benni McCarthy is a true South African football legend. He remains Bafana Bafana’s all-time leading scorer with 31 international goals and is the only South African ever to win the UEFA Champions League, having lifted the trophy with FC Porto in 2004. A decorated striker, he was joint top-scorer at the 1998 African Cup of Nations. In Europe he starred for top clubs – winning titles with Ajax in the Netherlands, and enjoying a “fabled” career at Porto (Champions League 2004) as well as spells at Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United in England. He finished his playing days back home with Orlando Pirates (2011–2013). McCarthy also broke ground off the pitch: as a pop culture icon, he featured in the 1998 Kwaito hit “Shibobo” by TKZee, which became South Africa’s fastest-selling single. These highlights – from “Shibobo” fame to sporting greatness – illustrate why his legacy is so celebrated. Hang out with Anele and The Club on 947 every weekday morning. On this week's show, we look back on the damp squib that was the abandoned game at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers. With little doubt that the game needed calling off, should there have been a contingency in place? Did we get away with one following the underwhelming first half performance? In other news, Harry Amass has had quite the month and picked up November's POTM gong. Was there ever any doubt? It wouldn't be a Monday night without some takeover talk. How are we feeling about the news that there still isn't a confirmed buyer in place, despite the administrators' deadline of last Friday? We also take advantage of having our 'new' Cup Squad member Tom 'Mr Meadows' Burton on the show as he gives us a rundown of how he became a shirt restoration sensation. Where does he get those Puma King templates from, and what's the deal with a Malaysian charity shop's fascination with our Diadora kits? All this and more! Hosted on Acast. There's chat around what went wrong and why things don't seem to be working for the Blues, with clips from Kieran McKenna after the frustrating result and performance. Then it's onto the bigger picture, with Ipswich seventh in the table and five points off second heading into the festive run of fixtures. Brad Friedel played his college ball at UCLA and had a stint at Liverpool before a longer and seriously fruitful one at Blackburn Rovers. He also stopped shots for Aston Villa and for Tottenham Hotspur, where in his final season he ran into a guy named Mauricio Pochettino. The goalkeeper, who was capped 82 times for the U.S. Men's National Team, got a front-row seat to the Argentine's methods when he came in and transformed the club, and his faith has never wavered that Pochettino will deliver now as head coach of the American team.We talked about all that when Friedel joined the show this Thanksgiving week, but we also got into a fascinating early chapter of his career. In 1995, he went off to Istanbul to play for Graeme Souness at Galatasaray. Along the way, he got a true taste of one of the world's most combustible football derbies, Galatasaray against Fenerbahce, the latest edition of which will play out this coming Monday.Friedel talked the derby, his times with Brian Clough and Kevin Keegan, and a bit about life in Istanbul.Get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast.
