How Did Ancient Humans Use The Acoustics Of Spaces Like Caves?

Science Friday

The sound of a choir performing in a cathedral is iconic for a reason. It's this beautiful human experience: being side-by-side with other people, feeling the sound vibrate through you, reverberating around the space. But how long has that been a part of our culture? And what role did sound play in the lives of people who lived during the Ice Age or the Stone Age? That's the focus of a growing field of archaeology called archaeoacoustics, where researchers use the scientific tools of today to investigate the role of sound and music in the past.To learn more, Host Flora Lichtman is joined by Margarita Díaz-Andreu, principal investigator of the Art Soundscapes project, and Rupert Till, head of the department of humanities at the University of Huddersfield in the UK.Guests: Dr. Margarita Díaz-Andreu is an ICREA professor at the University of Barcelona in Spain and principal investigator of the Art Soundscapes project. Dr. Rupert Till is a professor of music and head of the department humanities at the University of Huddersfield in the UK.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Stuff That Interests Me
Fifty tourists, one phone box and what Britain keeps throwing away

Stuff That Interests Me

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2025 7:04

Good Sunday to you,I am headed to Birmingham and Huddersfield week after next. If you are in either neck of the woods, come and see the show.Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's goneJoni MitchellBack in the 1980s I remember the newly privatised British Telecom, in its wisdom, decided to get rid of Britain's red telephone boxes and replace them with things made of glass or was it perspex? The originals were designed, I've since read, by one Giles Gilbert Scott, who got the gig as a result of a design competition. (I've since learned he also designed Battersea Power Station, so he was quality).British Telecom wanted a rebranding, so somebody at HQ decided to waste lord-knows-how-much money getting rid of however many phone boxes there were around the country - they're cast iron so this was not an easy job, nor a cheap one - and replace them with something better, which inevitably turned out to be worse. Here's the iconic before:Here's what they replaced them with:I barely remember these. You probably don't either. Because they were soon got rid of and replaced with these. Why did they bother? The glass replacements are just so bland you cannot not even describe them as ugly. They are just characterless nothings. Why people in corporations feel this need to glassify everything - it's happened to buildings as well, of course - is beyond me. I guess they think it's “dynamic”. (Indeed, they've done something similar to language).BT justified the rebranding by saying existing phone boxes got vandalised: prostitutes and mini cab drivers left their calling cards in them, people pissed in them. All of this is true, but there were other ways of dealing with these issues. (It's not unlike the many invented problems being cited today to justify hoisting digital ID on us). The bottom line is that the powers that be wanted a rebrand. Good for their egos, I guess. And thanks to the privatisation they now had bucket loads of capital to spend on it.Whatever. They spent a shedload and made it worse. So there I was walking along Parliament Square the other day and what did I see but a this huge queue of tourists lining up to have their photo taken by a phone box. Not one of the glass ones obviously. And I mean huge queue. See for yourself.I would say there are 40 or more people in that queue. If they each take 45 seconds for their photo, that's a good 30-minute wait. The rest of the world loves the English for who we are. For our history, our culture, our style, our character, our charm, our order, our beauty. That's why so many tourists flock here. Why are we incapable of appreciating ourselves and loving what we have created? - instead choosing to self-hate and apologise for what we have done. The rest of the world wants the England of red phone boxes, afternoon tea, good manners and Downton Abbey. They don't want England for its diversity (diversity is not London's greatest strength, despite what they mayor may tell you - London's greatest strength is that it is the capital of England, not Diversityland), nor for its gender-neutral toilets, glass fronted buildings, low trust communities or its street crime. They want England for the English. So the point of today's missive.A few years ago somebody got the no-doubt-very-well-paid gig erecting cycle sheds around the capital. Here was an opportunity to design something iconic, something which added to London - like the old red buses, black taxis, post boxes and, yes, the phone boxes. Things that characterise London, and thus things that people love London for. Here's what we got. They even put a picture of a bicycle on the side, just in case you're totally moronic.Talk about a wasted opportunity. They look like budget Anderson shelters. And what's the shelf life of one of those. Ten years, maybe? Can you see tourists seventy or eighty years from now queuing up for half an hour to get their photo taken next to one?Oh well.If you enjoyed reading this, please share it far and wide.Lots of things to share with you this week* Here ICYMI is this week's commentary:* Here is a piece from my comedy Substack about Prunella Scales, who died on Monday. It also contains an episode of a 1975 sitcom you've probably never heard of but in which she was absolutely brilliant. I urge you to watch it - you will thank me.* I made an appearance on Jeremy McKeown's new podcast, along with Tim Price, to talk gold.If you live in a Third World country, such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here.* And, finally, on Friday morning at 07.34 GMT, I became a grandad. Please welcome Cecilia (name not yet confirmed) to the group. As we are headed into Christmas present season, if you are unable to follow the tradition of the Wise Men and gift actual gold, how about a book about gold instead?I deal for anyone at home or at work. The signing of overseas players hasn't always meant adding quality to the competition, but this list of the very best certainly did. Although it's fair to say some made much more of an impact than others. For instance, the 'greatest player of all-time', Andrew Johns, made just three appearances for Warrington at the end of the 2005 season, and couldn't lead them to silverware. In the 1980s it was common practice for legendary NRL players to sign short-term contracts in England during the off-season 'Down Under'. More recently, imports have actually made their name in Super League, winning Grand Finals, Challenge Cups and earning recognition as the Man of Steel.Widely regarded as one of the games' finest players, Australian international player and coach, Mal Meninga, joined St Helens for the 1984/85 season and helped them win the Lancashire Cup and Premiership title. While Kiwi centre, Dean Bell, won seven successive Challenge Cup Finals with Wigan, including three as captain, and made such an impact he was the subject of 'This is Your Life' in 1993.Robbie Paul followed his brother Henry to Bradford and lit up the game making rugby league 'cool'. He was named 'Super League Player of the Season' aged just 20, whilst loose-forward Adrian Vowles with Castleford, centre Jamie Lyon at St Helens, full-back Brett Hodgson with Huddersfield and winger and goal-kicking machine Pat Richards at Wigan were all crowned the 'Man of Steel' between 1999 and 2010.Joining Robbie at the Bulls was 'The Volcano', Lesley Vainikolo. The huge New Zealand winger won two Super League titles and three Challenge Cup finals with Bradford scoring 149 tries in 152 games. And more recently, Wigan's Bevan French has really shone in Super League, not only winning silverware, but incredibly being named as 'Player of the Match' in three finals during 2024.So, who will take the accolade as the greatest import of all?

Rugby League Top 10: Dramatic Endings

There's nothing more dramatic than a game which is won or lost in the last meaningful moment. These are the ones which live longest in the memory for fans and players alike and which bring both tears of joy and despair in equal measure. And, when it's on the biggest stage, those memories last a lifetime. Some are lifted by the iconic commentary that sits alongside them. “Long fancies it, Long fancies it. It's wide to West, it's wide to West... ” makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up to this day as Chris Joynt finished off an incredibly desperate last play for St Helens against Bradford that ultimately led to a Grand Final victory.Occasionally, these dramatic endings also settle city rivalries. David Hodgson for Rovers against FC at Magic Weekend and Chris Green the other way around the following year to equal the score for example. Whilst others have more major consequence, such as Shaun Johnson breaking English hearts at Wembley in the World Cup semi-final or Gareth O'Brien's huge drop-goal in the Million Pound Game which capped off an incredible comeback by Salford in golden point extra-time.Then there's the drama of the helicopter hovering over the Pennines, waiting to see where the trophy was heading, when Ryan Hall's last second try for Leeds at Huddersfield secured the League Leaders' Shield and completed part two of the Rhinos treble campaign. While Jack Welsby's try on the hooter for his home town club against their fiercest rivals in the Covid hit Grand Final was equally dramatic despite hardly anyone being there to witness it. The players waited anxiously for the video referee to check it was a try and when confirmed went absolutely wild, even though there was no-one else there to celebrate with them! The more personal the occasion, the more memorable is the ending, and there's absolutely nothing worse than losing that way, but nothing beats winning like that either.

As daylight faded and the moorland sky burned a deep orange, the quiet stretch of the A640 near Huddersfield appeared serene. A local resident, David Sykes, was out jogging along a remote country road between the Nont Sarahs pub and the B6114 junction. The route, typically bypassed in favour of the faster M62 motorway, was nearly deserted.
