Welcome to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. To mark our 100th episode, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper revisit one of the game's true pioneers: Herbert Chapman. Long before his Arsenal legacy, Chapman transformed Huddersfield Town in the 1920s, laying the groundwork for modern football and guiding them to become the first club to win three consecutive top-flight league titles.A century later, Jonathan and Rob delve into the tactical innovations, strategic thinking, and leadership that defined Chapman's revolutionary approach. This episode brings Huddersfield's golden era to life—and shows how Chapman's influence still echoes through the game today, both on and off the pitch.00:00 Introduction and Milestone Celebration01:13 Herbert Chapman's Early Life and Career03:31 Chapman's Tactical Innovations11:19 Leeds City and Wartime Contributions22:07 Post-War Challenges and Huddersfield Opportunity27:44 Brighton's Replay and the Stuffed Donkey Incident28:49 The Controversial FA Cup Final30:33 Chapman's Tactical Innovations34:00 Huddersfield's Rise to Glory41:52 The Closest Title Race Ever?46:32 Chapman's Legacy and Move to Arsenal48:33 Conclusion and Reflections on Chapman's Impact Hosted on Acast. In today's podcast, I'm diving into a thought-provoking—and often heartbreaking—topic: mental illness in Tudor England. From moon-induced madness and “uterine vapours” to melancholy queens and frenzied courtiers, the Tudor understanding of mental health was a complex mix of medicine, superstition, religion, and fear. Did you know Jane Boleyn's breakdown led Henry VIII to change the law so she could be executed? Or that people paid to watch the inmates of Bedlam Hospital for entertainment? And what about Richard Pace, Henry VIII's secretary, who was said to tear his clothes and rant? I'll explore how Tudor people defined and treated mental illness, the roles of institutions like Bedlam, beliefs about the four humours, “wandering wombs,” and how the Dissolution of the Monasteries impacted care for the mentally ill. We'll meet real historical figures—from Queen Mary I to court fools considered holy—and look at how the legal system, family, and Church responded to mental illness. Inspired by my research with Clare Cherry and Amelia Sceats' brilliant thesis, this is a deep dive into a rarely discussed but important aspect of Tudor life. Like, subscribe, and share your thoughts in the comments—how do you think society's view of mental illness has changed? #TudorHistory #MentalHealthHistory #JaneBoleyn #AnneBoleyn #Bedlam #HistoryVideo #ClaireRidgway #TudorMadness #HistoricalTruths #HenryVIII Sceats, Amelia G. Send us a textI'm really pleased today to be welcoming Georgia Vine to Bedside Reading. Georgia is an OT and is the author of Occupational Therapy, Disability Activism and Me, Challenging Ableism in Healthcare, which is a bit of a mouthful of a title for a very slim and absolutely brilliant, brilliant book.Georgia is an OT, she is an educator at the University of Huddersfield and she also is disabled. She has cerebral palsy and this book is based on her own experiences through the education system, higher education, occupational therapy training, and the enormous hurdles which she had to leap over in order to become registered with the health professionals regulatory body, and which absolutely astonished me because I thought that the health service might have moved on somewhat in its ableist attitudes. Georgia's blog is here https://notsoterriblepalsy.com/Georgia reassures me during the course of the podcast that perhaps things have got better. I really hope they have. and with activists like her flying the flag, perhaps the world of healthcare is going to become even better at supporting students and staff who have disabilities, but also have so much to offer and so much insight into the system.Georgia is obviously incredibly talented. She is so, so wise and insightful drawing on her own experiences and experiences beyond what you might expect somebody in their 20s to have experienced, presumably as a result of her own disability. I absolutely love the book. It's really challenged me as an educator. It's really challenged me as a doctor and in a good way and to really, really think about what people can do and to start adopting a much, much more strengths-based framework in everything that I do in supporting my learners. So I'm hugely grateful to Georgia for writing it, and it was a real pleasure to talk to her about it.Find Georgia on instagram here https://www.instagram.com/notsoterriblepalsy

Lee was a pro goalkeeper at Manchester United and then joined Kieran McKenna's staff as a forwards coach, before recently taking the job at Huddersfield. Player development is often associated with the youth game, but Lee explains how the staff at Ipswich approach the detail and how elements like science, data, analysis and psychology are incorporated along the way. Phenomenal insight and an inspiring journey!!

As daylight faded and the moorland sky burned a deep orange, the quiet stretch of the A640 near Huddersfield appeared serene. A local resident, David Sykes, was out jogging along a remote country road between the Nont Sarahs pub and the B6114 junction. The route, typically bypassed in favour of the faster M62 motorway, was nearly deserted. On the verge of the road lay a grim discovery; evidence that someone had chosen this isolated spot not just for its peaceful scenery, but they thought it would be the ideal place to dispose of a body… *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Eileen Macfarlane.Edited by Joel Porter at Dot Dot Dot Productions.Script editing, additional writing, illustrations and production direction by Rosanna FittonNarration, additional audio editing and mixing, and script editing by Benjamin Fitton. To get early ad-free access, including Season 1, sign up for They Walk Among PLUS, available from Patreon or Apple Podcasts.More information and episode references can be found on our website https://theywalkamonguspodcast.comMUSIC: Firewall by Cody Martin Dark Night by Cody Martin Forbidden Wing by Cody Martin Half Empty by Cody Martin Kalahari by Cody Martin Loaves & Fish by Cody Martin Storms Coming by Cody Martin Tesseract by Cody Martin Negative Thoughts by Craig Allen Fravel Gravity by Caleb Etheridge Enigma by Hill Unexpected Turn by Moments Stasis Interrupted by Dresden the Flamingo Rag Doll by Wicked Cinema Rogue Asset by Wicked Cinema The Curse by Wicked Cinema The Unexplained by Wicked Cinema Vanished by Wicked Cinema SOCIAL MEDIA: https://linktr.ee/TheyWalkAmongUsSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/theywalkamongus. Skies Turn Black are an electronic metal band from the North of England, taking influence from guitar driven heavy metal and incorporating features of dance music. Their brand of metal can chop and change genre, to go from being rich in 80's heavy metal nostalgia with riffs and huge choruses to keytar led synth sections with aggressive drops that still packs that heavy punch. Since the release of 'No Place Like Home' in 2018, Skies Turn Black have added a keytar to line up, diversifying their sound to explore what genre bending electronics can add to the heavy metal at the core of the band. The result has taken the heaviness of dance music such as dubstep, to create an impactful twist to your run of the mill metal. Since their appearance at Bloodstock 2023, the band have played across the UK, performing at sold out shows in Sunderland, Nottingham, Huddersfield and Bristol. Away from the stage, the band have worked tirelessly to refine their sound. The end result being their stunning new album 'Broken Hearts & Bad Habits'. The new album puts more focus than ever on hooks, whilst keeping the band's intricate guitar work and anthemic choruses. Every song on the album exposes a vulnerability, addressing personal issues of love and lust, heartbreak and depression, as each song undertakes a journey of self-worth. Each song can be categorised as either a “Broken Heart” or a “Bad Habit” song. 'Broken Hearts And Bad Habits' will be released on June 27th, 2025, via Sliptrick Records. We spoke to bassist Dan Woodhead about the new album, the work that has gone into it, Skies Turn Black's journey since we last spoke (Bloodstock 2023), and so much more. //The Wire//2300Z April 4, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: YEMENI HOUTHIS DOWN TWO AMERICAN DRONES, CONTRIBUTING TO CONTINUED HIGH TENSIONS. ECONOMIC INSTABILITY REMAINS FOLLOWING TARIFFS ANNOUNCEMENT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-United Kingdom: A 16-year-old boy was murdered after being stabbed in the neck in Huddersfield. So far, multiple attackers have been arrested in conjunction with the murder, however authorities have not identified the assailants.Red Sea/HOA: The situation involving American targeting of the Houthis in Yemen has deteriorated following the shootdown of two American drones within the past few days. Two MQ-9 Reaper drones were shot down by the Houthis, one in Hudaydah, the other over Ma'rib.Middle East: This afternoon the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center issued a maritime advisory warning of increased GPS jamming being detected in the Strait of Hormuz.AC: This is a classic tactic used by Iranian forces routinely, either for the hijacking of vessels, or for more wartime preparations. While it is possible that the jamming is the result of American warships using electronic countermeasures to defend against missiles, in this case this could be related to the recent uptick in Iranian forces stopping oil tankers allegedly engaging in the smuggling of petroleum products. Iranian authorities seized two vessels attempting to illegally export diesel fuel from Iran a few days ago for these reasons. However, considering that the overall security situation in the region remains tenuous, GPS jamming could be a sign of increasing defenses against a potential conflict.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - Various economic fallout continues as all sides of the issue interpret the recent tariff announcements in the context of economic stability. Others think that while this is a noble goal, this may not be possible in some industries as companies will simply keep production overseas, and pass the costs of tariffs on to consumers, since most major companies in the modern world are monopolies. Others still don't like taxes in any form whatsoever, which is an argument that often mistakenly conflates taxing a domestic population with taxing an overseas adversary. When Robert Wilson went to work at the Thornton & Ross pharmaceutical plant in Linthwaite, Huddersfield on the evening of January 16, 2020, he had no idea that he would never return home. The 53-year-old was carrying out a routine security check when he confronted two teenagers trespassing on the premises. What followed was a frenzied and senseless attack, in which Robert was subjected to an act of unimaginable violence. This harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of knife crime and the dangers posed by individuals willing to commit acts of extreme violence.
