Peter Hook reflects on 50 years of music, the emotional weight of performing Joy Division and New Order live, and the many memories and ghosts of his past. Tickets for Peter Hook & The Light, Australia 2026 Topics Include: New Order toured Australia as early as 1982, helped by Factory Australasia's local support. Hooky calls Australia the only place he never wants to leave — he still suffers leaving every time. Peter Hook and the Light played their seventh-ever gig in Melbourne on their first Australian tour. He is now working through every New Order and Joy Division album ever recorded live. Get Ready features songs never played live as New Order, with Steve Morris largely absent during recording. The band's Grammy came from Orgy's heavy metal cover of Blue Monday — Hook loves the weird covers most. He revealed a plan to stage a full New Order classical concert, eyeing the Sydney Opera House. Ian Curtis performed with absolute conviction every single night — something Bernard Sumner couldn't match early on. Hook recalls first seeing Ian smash up a venue at 2:30am, dancing through broken tables — terrifying and electrifying. That chaotic Stiff/Chiswick talent show led directly to Rob Gretton becoming Joy Division's manager. Ian's lyrics, Hook says, are heartbreaking up close — Love Will Tear Us Apart masks devastating words in euphoric music. Singing Ian's words himself has given Hook a profound new insight into what Curtis was actually expressing. Tony Wilson signed them with a handshake — no contracts — while other labels arrived with thick legal documents. Bernard Sumner found the Unknown Pleasures pulsar image in a textbook; nobody planned the iconic sleeve. Hooky was actually sued for bootlegging the Unknown Pleasures artwork — which Factory themselves had originally stolen. Ian Curtis reportedly wrote a letter complaining about how Closer sounded — a detail Hook only learned years later. During Closer sessions, Curtis was being torn apart: marriage collapsing, new love, epilepsy worsening, the band pushing forward. Hook deeply regrets not seeing Ian before his cremation — but a gravedigger privately told him where Curtis is actually buried. The inquest into Ian's death so disgusted the band they decided on the spot to continue as New Order. Joy Division was deliberately boxed away for 30 years; Bernard called playing those songs "miserable" and refused to continue. Bobby Gillespie suggested the album playback concept so Hook could faithfully recreate Martin Hannett's studio sound live. Watching his son learn Joy Division bass lines at the same age Hook was then felt like staring into the past. Performing these songs, Hook says he is "living surrounded by ghosts" of collaborators now gone. The K-93 sessions saw Killing Joke's Geordie Walker move into Hook's Manchester home for six weeks, causing complete chaos. Those lost K-93 tapes mysteriously surfaced after the label went bankrupt — and Jaz Coleman promptly went silent again. Suede - Europe Is Our Playground (Demo)Suede - Europe Is Our PlaygroundSuede - W.S.D.Suede - Every Monday Morning ComesSuede - The Sound of The StreetsSuede - This Time

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the English post-rock band Bark Psychosis (as well as some other general stuff) in (just under) twenty five minutes.Originally, Bark Psychosis was a quartet of Graham Sutton, Daniel Gish, John Ling and Mark Simnett. This line-up (with contributions from other passing members) recorded early singles and EPs plus the debut album Hex, before gradually dissolving over the course of 1994, with Sutton moving on to his drum and bass project Boymerang and to production work. Sutton reformed the group in 2004 without any of the other previous members, as a flexible project in which he was supported by a shifting roster of guest musicians (including Talk Talk drummer Lee Harris and experimental guitarist Colin Bradley of Dual). In 2005, Bark Psychosis released the 400 Winters EP. This featured three Dustsucker album tracks 'deconstructed and reassembled' by Colin Bradley.Bark Psychosis has been dormant since 2005, mainly due to Sutton concentrating on his work as a producer. Pendulum Man was featured in the 2008 movie Definitely, Maybe. In 2017 Hex was reissued on vinyl and CD on Fire Records.I do hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Everyone needs a Beach Boy break every now and then, and I'm happy as a clam to announce this sharp left turn with Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, as we take a mutual descent into the heart of darkness. Our examination of every last triumphantly bleak release by post-punk progenitors Joy Division is a dependably in-depth celebration of this great band's “eerie spatially.”Here's just a few of the many things that Stuart discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:An exploration of their early punk years as Warsaw; The band's feeling that producer Martin Hannett never properly captured their real sound in the studio;A side discussion about the successful bands of the 1960s who we feel are vastly overrated; The pricelessly uncouth way in which they kicked their original drummer out of the band;Whether or not this is Stuart's favorite debut album of all time; And an in-depth rundown of Unknown Pleasures and a bunch of early singles and EPs.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. You've seen the shirt. You've heard bands talk about how they influenced them. Now listen for yourself as we become the best podcast on Joy Division and their debut album, "Unknown Pleasures." We talk scariest songs, Matt gives a review of the latest episode, and Aaron tells us how you can always go home. Next week, Wild is the Wind by Nina Simone!
First of all, let's be clear. Can we possibly be the best Ray Charles podcast and the best ever about this box set called The Birth of Soul, without Matt? Probably not, but three of us got together on a school night and tried. We find out how Aaron gets his weather (wild), how my uncle was in the Miami Sound Machine, and we dive into Spotify Leagues. Rob talks beds on the plane; you will never guess how Aaron says Swordfish. (Actually, I bet you could.) and Russell is living it up in Vegas. Then we hear the greatest story of all time and finally drag ourselves to talk about this 53-song, 3-cd, 140-minute-long box set. Set your watch to deep sleep and join us as we talk about Soul music and why so many of these songs make us think about how we could circumcise a gnat. Next week we don't talk about the BBQ and we talk Joy Division with Unknown Pleasures. Call or text the Bext Line at 802-277 BECK.
In Episode #190 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to legendary bassist Peter Hook, co-founder of Joy Division and New Order. Peter Hook & the Light will soon tour North America, the UK, and Ireland. The band will perform the full Substance albums by Joy Division and New Order on live dates. Peter Hook first revisited the seminal Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures in May 2010 for a commemorative charity concert and has followed it each year by performing subsequent albums from the repertoire of his bands, Joy Division and New Order. Peter Hook & The Light have since moved through each of those albums, culminating in the Factory Records Substance compilations, and recently celebrated over four decades of the continuing influence of Joy Division and Ian Curtis with the Joy Division: A Celebration concerts where both of the band's albums were played in full. In this interview, Peter discusses his time with Joy Division and New Order, working with Damon Albarn on Gorillaz, the upcoming tour, and more. Jordan and Alex don their most severe clothing and geometric haircuts to dive in the Big Bang of post-punk and goth: Joy Division's “Unknown Pleasures!” They'll trace the band's origins to a pre-fame Sex Pistols gig in Manchester attended by virtually every member of the city's musical luminaries to the maddening conditions of recording with insane genius producer Martin Hannett, who maybe tried to suffocate and/or poison their drummer? They'll also re-litigate 1980s Manchester's most famous rock feud…among people who aren't in the Smiths: Joy Division/ New Order's Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner! Also get ready to be so sad hearing about Ian Curtis' life! The shadow(play) of this band and this record in particular, looms large. From its iconic cover to the deification of singer Ian Curtis after his suicide shortly after the albums release to their transformation into the stadium filling New Order afterward, everything about Joy Division feels big and important. But what about the music itself? Sure it influenced everyone from The Cure to U2, Tears For fears to Interpol but does it hold up on its own merits in 2024? We dig into the fading new dawn and attempt to remember everything. I discuss Joy Division's iconic 1979 debut album, Unknown Pleasures.
Filmmaker, critic, and cultural historian Bill Mousoulis has forged a career as, in the truest sense of the word, an independent filmmaker in Australia. His filmography spans over decades, with his works showcasing a keen sense of curiosity for the world around him, whether it be Greece, Melbourne, or as in his latest film My Darling in Stirling, the humble city of Stirling in the Adelaide Hills. In the following interview, recorded ahead of the world premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival, Bill talks about the inspiration for My Darling in Stirling, while also touching on what it means to be an Australian filmmaker working right now.I've long respected and looked up to Bill for his work alongside Chris Luscri as they champion Australian independent cinema with their ongoing screenings under the banner of Unknown Pleasures, all the while Bill has fostered a support for alternative Australian cinema with his website Pure Shit. It was a pleasure to be able to talk with Bill about his work, both as a filmmaker and a writer. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I welcome another fantastic musician this week who I found on TikTok named Dusty Gannon, who is the lead singer and guitarist of the goth rock band Vision Video. You can find Dusty online playing good music, wearing perfect goth makeup, and doing a hilariously charming character named 'Goth Dad.' But all of those things led him to where he is today... playing music for a living! I happily welcome Dusty on the show to share his story about serving in the military and becoming a fireman, what led him to making videos online, and finally his unsinkable album just so happens to be Joy Division's 1979 album, Unknown Pleasures. Peter Saville is a man of the moment—and has been, again and again, throughout the past five decades. Raised in Manchester, England, in the sixties—in tandem with the growing prominence of counterculture, the rise of anti-war sentiments, and the birth of pop—Saville developed early on a keen eye and ear for the zeitgeist, or what he terms “nowness.” In his adolescence, he took up a fervent interest in music and in record covers in particular, and went on to art school to study graphic design. In his final year, he was commissioned to design the very first posters for the punk music venue The Factory, which would soon morph into the legendary independent record label Factory Records. Across his prolific, nearly 50-year-long career in graphic design and art direction, Saville has created album covers for Joy Division and New Order (most iconically, the one for Joy Division's debut studio album, Unknown Pleasures); branding for clients including Ferragamo, Burberry, and Aston Martin; and more recently, even Kvadrat fabric designs—each drawing inspiration from the spirit of their times—that can be called nothing short of era-defining. Woven across all of his work are provocative dialogues between past, present, and future. On this episode, Saville speaks with Andrew about coming of age in the punk and post-punk worlds, the increasing impossibility of tracking “nowness,” and creating literal signs of the times.Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Peter Saville[12:11] Kvadrat Technicolour[01:10:48] Power, Corruption & Lies album cover[42:21] Factory Records[50:15] FAC1 poster[50:15] Haçienda[53:13] FAC 2[29:23] Unknown Pleasures album cover[01:22:13] Closer album cover[01:24:43] “Blue Monday” cover[01:35:44] The Apartment[01:39:29] Show Studio

The lads join up with former guest Erik Marks to discuss Joy Division's 1979 seminal post-punk monolith "Unknown Pleasures". Despite a distinct lack of blastbeats and major 7th chords, both Jim and Patrick manage to find some things they like about it. Also, wait... has Jim's name actually been Tim this whole time? That would certainly be embarrassing to admit nearly 100 episodes in.
