My guest is Ceylon Andi Hickman, director of the charity Football Beyond Borders (FBB). We're discussing how football is making a positive change to young people's lives, especially in their education. The charity has worked with footballers, including Marcus Rashford and Chris Smalling, and is proven to help children do well at school. Ceylon is also a centre-half for Dulwich Hamlet Women, so we also discuss the progressive culture around the South London club. They have been promoted since the time of recording, so congratulations to them.
A plant-based athlete and investor, Chris Smalling is dedicated to creating a more sustainable future for the planet. Chris currently plays for Serie A giants AS Roma, moving to Italy in 2020 from Manchester United, having played over 200 games for the club, and winning 31 caps for England in the process. Chris set up ForGood in 2020 to play a key role in accelerating the ecosystem that actively invests and champions the next generation of responsible businesses, with the ambition to drive a movement of doing things for good. Chris is also a Patron of Football Beyond Borders, a UK-based nonprofit that uses the power of football to change the lives of young people, and has recently co-founded athlete-led venture vehicle, The Players Fund. In today's episode, we discuss: His pathway to football: How finishing school and a prospective place at university gave Chris a decision to make when it came to turning professional. How can the industry provide more opportunities for academy players to finish their education and still play top level football? What did having options do for Chris' mindset when it came to handling pressure and potential failure in football? How does Chris use his experience in dressing rooms and high-performance environments to benefit his business ventures? The key influences in Chris' career: From agents to family to financial advisors; the key team who support players and the importance of getting the right people around you. What it was like to have Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger trying to sign Chris and what influenced his decision to join Manchester United. Playing with your idols and the nerves of walking into a dressing room with Ferdinand, Vidic, Giggs, and Scholes. The challenges with balancing family and intensive travel commitments, and the speed at which your life can be uprooted to another city or country. How being welcomed to Roma and a love of the city and people made the transition so enjoyable. Business and Sport: What does Chris do away from the pitch and what are the motivations behind his business ambitions? Are business opportunities available to all athletes or do you have to go out and find them? The Players Fund: a joint venture between Chris and a number of other sports stars, what is the purpose of creating a vehicle driven by athletes? Whose responsibility is it to provide an environment where footballers in particular feel prepared and able to get into business and trust the environment? A life after football: what to do when your identity is wrapped up in your profession and how to put a plan in place for the ‘next step'.
England are through to the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in history. But while the Lionesses are excelling in Australia and New Zealand, what's it like for girls playing football back in the UK? Are they feeling the impact of England's success? Samerah, Charlotte, and Isabelle, teenagers involved in the Football Beyond Borders programme, share their experiences, and Anita speaks to Ceylon Andi Hickman, the charity's director of external relations, about how to ensure the legacy of the World Cup reaches girls from all backgrounds. A 22 year old woman has denied carrying out an illegal abortion during lockdown. Bethany Cox was accused of two charges on Tuesday in relation to using drugs and poison to end a pregnancy in July 2020. She pleaded not guilty to the charges in court and has been released on bail. Anita Rani speaks to Hannah Al-Othman, a reporter for the Sunday Times who was in court. It's A level results today across the UK for hundreds and thousands of students. The proportion of A or A* grades is 27.2% down from a peak of nearly 45% in the pandemic. That means it is more or less back to where it was in 2019, the last year of exams before COVID. Grainne Hallahan, senior analyst from TES Magazine, looks into how girls performed. In 2023, a survey of 10,000 university students found that only 14 percent of pupils who had been in the care system progressed to higher education by age 19, compared to 47 percent of all other pupils. Anita is joined by Kim Emenike, who was in care as a child and Katharine Sacks-Jones, Chief Executive of the charity, Become, which supports young care leavers to discuss the challenges they face. TV presenter Sarah Greene, most well-known for her work on Blue Peter and Going Live is back on our screens with a brand new BBC 1 quiz show, The Finish Line. She joins Anita Rani to reflect on her career and to tell us all about her new role. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt Studio manager: Steve Greenwood

We speak to ‘sports royalty' Baroness Sue Campbell about her life-long mission to change the lives of women and girls through sport and to journalist Suzy Wrack about the history of the game. Meet Ceylon! Ceylon and I recorded this interview together on zoom almost 2 months ago now! I could relate to SO much of what Ceylon said about the power of football to create change. I really loved this chat, and hope you do too! Ceylon has been described as an underdog who works to advocate for other underdogs. She is the head of Impact and Girls Participation at Football Beyond Borders - an organisation that uses football to create change in the lives of young people. Within this role, Ceylon has designed a specific program for girls that provides disadvantaged, ‘at risk' girls with a safe space to explore their emotions, build trusted relationships, engage in their education and develop a love for football. When Ceylon started, there were only 16 girls in the program. Today, there are hundreds. As well as this, Ceylon is a contributor for the Guardian's football weekly, plays for Dulwich Hamlet FC, and is a lifelong Liverpool fan. Enjoy!
