There may not be a game to dissect this week, but there is plenty going on at Sheffield Wednesday. We react to David Hirst's comments on his relationship with the club's former owner, discuss the ongoing interest in the club as the ownership situation continues to develop, and assess why Mike Ashley is a name that just won't go away.On the football side, we also look at reports linking Wednesday with young Everton defender Reece Welch — what kind of player is he, and would he make sense for the Owls?Whether it's off-the-pitch uncertainty or early transfer talk, there's never a quiet week at Hillsborough… Hosted on Acast. Marcus, Jim and Pete dust themselves down after a proper European goal fest, as Liverpool continue to suffer their worst run of form since the mid-1950s. Probably wasn't ideal that Virgil van Dijk was trying to referee the game from centre-back and PSV's Ivan Perišić kept slurping from the Fountain of Football Youth.Elsewhere, Arsenal reach another level against Bayern, Spurs put in a better showing against PSG and Sheffield Wednesday are faced with the grimmest ownership choice imaginable: merge with Sheffield United… or Mike Ashley. Mike Ashley buys Wiggle CRC: Ex-employee talks “shock” at retail giant's demise and staff's “hard and fast goodbye”, plus THAT Visma Giro helmet discussed

While the two topics discussed on episode 72 of the road.cc Podcast are both high on the cycling world's list of talking points this week, they notably sit at opposite ends of the seriousness spectrum (unless you take your time trial helmet debates very seriously, of course). In part one, George and Ryan are joined by a former Wiggle Chain Reaction Cycles employee, one of the 450-odd staff members laid off as part of the online retailer's demise and recent rumoured purchase by Mike Ashley's Frasers Group, who discussed what life was like behind the scenes at the beleaguered brand as Wiggle CRC lurched from crisis to crisis in recent months following the collapse of its parent company. The ex-employee also chats about the contrast between Wiggle's grand expansion plans and the struggling state of the bike industry, the “shock” of the company's collapse (amid hopes that it could continue on), and the abrupt, “hard and fast goodbye” dished out to its staff, and the future for Wiggle's house brands such as Vitus and dhb.Meanwhile, in an altogether more frivolous part two, Ryan and Jamie sit down to discuss the topic that's dominated the agenda at Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico this week: Visma-Lease a Bike's bonkers new Giro Aerohead time trial helmets (oh, and Bahrain-Victorious' fire service-style helmets, too). We ask the important questions: Has helmet design finally jumped the shark? Do these increasingly extravagant air-cheating shapes actually make a difference? Will the UCI ban Giro's bold new look? And, finally, was it designed by a five-year-old?

Alan chooses to focus on the positives in that Pollock is getting his chance and seems intent on proving his worth and cementing a place in the starting eleven and looking at the away form which is unbeaten in seven! Pete calls out the number of central midfielders is below the “two players for each position” threshold leaving TDB and Kone looking very leggy which whilst still working hard did affect the quality of their use of the ball.Wendover agrees that the players looked tired and asks why the transfer window has not been used to inject some fresh legs and energy into the squad. Always keen on a transfer window, Wendover fears that the hype over Dennis suggests that he might be the only incoming in the window (with 24 hours to go as we spoke).Caity joins us and points out that both Sema and Dennis are forced to play because of the lack of depth when they are clearly no where near 100% fit, Paul observes how once again Ben Hamer has won us a point with another outstanding display and asks why top players can play two games in a week and not look as tired. He further asks if our way of playing is further exacerbating the psychological element of “feeling” tired. Not convinced by either Bayo or Rajovic with the window closing asks what have Manga, Giaretta and Nani been doing? Paul is also dismissive of talk of building for next year as parachute money will be gone as loaned against already – might we be forced to sell Asprilla & Andrews and reverting to the Watford style of existence we had prior to the Pozzo takeover? However Paul is convinced that Val is, for all his faults, the right man to lead us next season too.Uncle Ron joins us and says if Gino has lost interest or if Watford has fallen down his list of priorities that he should sell and compares our situation to Newcastle under Mike Ashley. John joins us and offers “ying” to Ron's “yang” (or vice versa) and looks on the positive side and looks through the squad and thinks we have enough until Pete points out the midfield numbers are below the level of 2 for each position.COYH!!This Podcast has been created and uploaded by Do Not Scratch Your Eyes. Marcus, Vish, Pete and Jim are here to sing the Toon's praises and look over a cracking weekend of football. Aston Villa's '12-year-old on FIFA' approach proved hugely effective at Wolves, while Brother Brendy's got his swagger back and Everton's training ground becomes Merseyside's hottest nightclub. The star of his Nunaka Valley Elementary School club team in the 60's, Mike Ashley went on to cut his teeth in the Saskatchewan Junior League for the Weyburn Red Rings. That rough and tumble, rise and grind experience would pay dividends when he traded his stick for a clipboard. Coach Ashley amassed 10 state high school championships during his tenure behind the bench at Dimond (head), Service (assistant) and South Anchorage (head). He was also an assistant bench boss to Brush Christianson at UAA in the early 80's and took the helm of the Anchorage Aces for the 1992-1993 season.   Now retired from both coaching and teaching Mike is still heavily involved with USA Hockey as a Pacific District Evaluator for Alaska. He officiates youth/adult hockey and volunteers at high school hockey games as an off-ice official.     The 2019 Alaska High School Hall of Fame inductee has honest and intelligent takes on all the hot button topics about the state of Alaska hockey. Forever the rink rat, this rat has stories. A lot of stories! Manchester City were convincing winners and, along with last week's defeat to Liverpool, the team have been left in no doubt as to how much they must improve to challenge at the top of the table. But, how much can Newcastle's new management take inspiration from the rapid rise of Manchester's "noisy neighbours"? And, there's a reminder of how bad things used to be as Paul Ferris remembers dealing with Mike Ashley during Alan Shearer's short spell as manager. With Gary just back from ICFA in Florida, he discussed whether this will really be the year of re-emergence, with both the World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago and World Fantasy Convention in New Orleans in the offing. This led, as it does, to discussion of the Hugos, whether small categories with few nominations should be dropped, whether other categories should be added, and whether major historical studies such as Mike Ashley's five-volume The History of the Science-Fiction Magazines really have a chance of being seen because of availability issues, as compared to the increasingly broad definition of “related work.” Inevitably, we chatted about new or forthcoming books we're excited about. We both liked Guy Gavriel Kay's All the Seas of the World, Alix E. Harrow's A Mirror Mended, and Christopher Rowe's These Prisoning Hills, while Jonathan is tempted by Karen Joy Fowler's new novel Booth and Gary's about to start Samit Basu's The City Inside.  Of course, there are lots of digressions in between, including the nature of historical fiction and nostalgia for printed books in the age of e-books (at least for reviewers and critics).
