In this episode of The UK Flooring Podcast, Tom sits down with Dean Smith, owner of DCS Flooring Limited, for an honest conversation about growing a commercial flooring business, stepping away from the tools and finding a better balance between work and family life.Dean shares how he followed his dad into flooring after leaving college, before choosing a different route and building a business focused mainly on commercial projects. However, years of fitting demanding floors during the day, quoting at night and carrying the pressure of running a business began to take its toll. Dean found himself physically exhausted, struggling to make the numbers work and bringing the stress of the business home with him. That pressure eventually contributed to the breakdown of his relationship and forced him to reconsider what he wanted from his business and his life.Dean explains how taking on more fitters and coming off the tools helped him regain control. Although the transition was difficult, and the work initially struggled to catch up with the size of the team, it allowed him to focus on winning projects, managing the business and spending more time with his children. The conversation also explores the realities of managing employees, staying organised, using AI and automation, and why business owners can become so focused on systems that they forget the basic task of bringing new work through the door. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeHow Dean progressed from working alongside his dad to running DCS Flooring LimitedWhy he chose commercial flooring instead of following his dad into domestic retailThe physical and emotional impact of fitting floors while trying to run a businessHow business pressure affected Dean's relationship and family lifeWhy working harder did not necessarily mean making more moneyThe challenges of employing people before the workload has caught upWhy getting off the tools became a major turning pointHow Dean keeps his team happy through fairness, good pay and sensible working hoursWhy every employee is motivated by something differentHow early mornings help Dean complete his most important workWhy enjoying your job is often a choice rather than something that simply happensHow Dean uses ChatGPT, CRM systems and an AI receptionist in the businessThe risks of automating too much of the customer journeyWhy systems and processes can become a distraction from salesDean's plans to grow the company without losing the freedom he has createdMemorable Quote“We can all go to work and earn money, but ultimately you need to go to work and enjoy yourself.”Speaker InformationDean Smith is the owner of DCS Flooring Limited, a commercial flooring contractor based in Leicestershire. After spending much of his career fitting floors himself, Dean is now focused on growing his team, improving the company's systems and building a business that gives him more control, freedom and time with his family.Follow DCS Flooring Limited on Instagram:@dcsflooringltdVisit the DCS Flooring website:www.dcsflooringltd.co.ukWhere to Find The UK Flooring PodcastListen to The UK Flooring Podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or watch the latest episodes through the Cockerill & Co YouTube channel.Follow The UK Flooring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn for new episodes, clips and conversations from across the flooring industry. In this episode, Al and Jenny meet Justin Gill. Justin became a follower of Jesus as a young man in his native Pakistan from where he immigrated to the UK. Immersed in post-industrial English communities for twenty years, he became well acquainted with the complex realities of race, poverty, religion, and questions of belonging. This conversation explores the turbulent relationship between Christianity, Islam and secularisation in a time of cultural and political instability. Justin senses that God has brought him, as a Christian, into Muslim contexts, and to be among the indigenous English working class. His love for peoples and place is evident in his deep understanding of these different communities' reactions to deindustrialisation, and how their responses to current tensions express their distinct histories and worldviews. Tying all this together is his deep conviction of Christ as Redeemer and His presence in hard, conflicted places.Justin Gill works with the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC), advising on cross-cultural mission in a network that links more than 50,000 Christians across the UK. Justin speaks here in a personal capacity. Born and raised in North Pakistan, he was an advisor on minority affairs to a political party and led relief operations following the 2005 earthquake. Moving to the UK in 2006, he gained an MSc in Development and Project Planning at Bradford University and lived in North Yorkshire. He continues to support evangelical church networks in Pakistan. He now lives in Leicestershire and attends Knighton Free Church. For Justin Gillhttps://fiec.org.uk/people/justin-gillhttps://fiec.org.uk/who-we-are/staffhttps://uk.linkedin.com/in/justin-gill-fiechttps://x.com/Justin4Gillhttps://fiec.org.uk/resources/moving-towards-intercultural-churchhttps://fiec.org.uk/resources/should-every-church-be-multi-racialFor Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/aboutFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetworkBooks:Forming Communities of Hope in the Great Unravelling: Leadership in a Changing World (with Roy Searle)Joining God in the Great UnravellingLeadership, God's Agency and DisruptionsJoining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our TimeFor Jenny Sinclair:Substack: https://t4cg.substack.com/s/from-jenny-sinclairWebsite: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/ Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

Today Ben is in the Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire borderlands meeting Tom Hawthorne who is farm manager for Flawborough Farms, farming 3200 hectares of cereals, forage maize and whole crop silage both for the home farm and contracting for 13 other landowners. The Hawthorne family have been farming at Flawborough since 1956 when Tom's grandfather Charles inherited the farm from his godfather. With heavy land winter crops are the mainstay for the farm including Oilseed rape, Wheat, and Beans. Minimal cultivations have been used since the 1960s. Over time, the business has gradually increased its arable area through contracting.

In episode 297 of the Kite Podcast, Will Evans and Ben Eagle are joined by Rob Daykin from Daykin Partnership, Shropshire farmer Tim Downes, event host and Leicestershire farmer Will Armitage and Dorset farmer Sophie Gregory, as well as podcast producer Becki Reay. They discuss the evolution of the organic dairy sector, and the upcoming organic dairy conference run by the Organic Dairy Round Table, taking place in Leicestershire next week. The Organic Dairy Roundtable has been key in bringing farmers, processors, and retailers together around a shared goal of promoting organic dairy. It creates space for open, honest discussions and constructive challenge. As chair Sophie Gregory highlights, the focus is on giving the sector a voice, direction and turning conversations into real action. The episode dives deep into the state of the organic dairy market, which has seen fluctuations over the years. Will Armitage explains how the Roundtable has helped the sector respond to market signals and make sure farmers are heard. A big theme throughout is the need for farmers to work together to tackle market challenges. No milk market update from Chris Walkland this week. Last week we took the Lento box to capture the natural soundscapes of rural Leicestershire and Rutland. Our visit coincided with the warmest May temperatures on record and as it turned out the most powerful thunderstorms we'd ever experienced. On the evening of 26 May huge storm clouds swept into the valley, centering exactly over a remote wooded area where we'd left the Lento box tied to a tree to capture the natural soundscape. An hour later the storm was still directly overhead with ear-splitting thunderclaps and fork lightning. We crossed our fingers that the mics would be alright. We collected the box the next morning. The mics survived but the box was drenched. In this episode we're sharing the hour leading up to those lightning strikes. Listening is a rare opportunity to experience the sound-feel of being within an empty rural woodland as the trees and wildlife prepare to ride out the on-coming tumult. Gain full aural immersion of this woodland soundscape with headphones or ear pods. The clarity and spatial reverberances of the spring birdsong. The 360 degree humming created by millions of tiny bees and other insects engaged in their daily foraging. Hear how a small deer picks its way over the leaf litter and pauses right beneath the tree holding the mics. Was it curious about the Lento box? Its footfalls seem to suggest it was. Pheasants can also be heard wandering the forest floor nearby, and mewing to each other in ways we haven't heard before. Baa'ings of sheep and lambs from the surrounding fields echo in the spaces between the trees. As this passage of time progresses towards the 50 minute mark the sky above the woodland has gone from a bright spring blue to the densest of heavy clouded grey. The landscape has dimmed into a premature dusk, punctuated only by intense electrical flashes. It can feel so dangerous to us even from within sturdy buildings, and yet thunderstorms and the way the wildlife respond to them with only leaves and branches for protection are all just part and parcel of life on Earth. * In the last few minutes of this 62 minute passage of time some owls can be heard hooting shortly after the first major roll of thunder cracks open the rapidly darkening sky. ** This is Launde Park Wood Nature Reserve, an ancient woodland of 57 Hectares, managed by Leicester and Rutland Wildlife Trust. *** Next time we'll share the next hour, but be prepared, it's one of the most tumultuous hours we've ever recorded!

In our last edition before the World Cup break, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes are joined by the distinguished author and journalist Duncan Hamilton. Duncan has written almost twenty books on various aspects of football and cricket including three William Sports Book of the Year winners. Among those twenty are biographies of George Best, Harold Larwood and Neville Cardus, a fascinating portrait of Brian Clough called Provided You Don't Kiss Me and his latest Answered Prayers about Alf Ramsey and the winning of the World Cup. You would think that there was nothing left to say about 1966 but by concentrating on the rather tortured character of Alf Ramsey, Duncan makes us relive that whole experience with fresh insight. In particular Duncan promotes the importance in Alf's life of the Spurs manager Arthur Rowe, the now almost forgotten manager of the Tottenham Hotspur side that won the League Championship in the 1950-51 season. His tactics came to be called “push and run” and in Alf Ramsey, Rowe found a willing student. To discover all sorts of fascinating details about Alf and the 1966 World Cup triumph download the latest podcast. And just to re-iterate: Colin, Jon and their indefatigable producer, Paul, are arriving at the World Cup like all the players – utterly knackered. In order to recharge the batteries, they will have a close season where they will not be found drunk and disorderly in a nightclub in Ibiza. Instead, they will be back bright eyed and bushy-tailed for the new season towards the end of August. If you really can't wait till then and you want to see them all in operation you will be able to find them at the Nevill Holt Festival in the glorious Leicestershire countryside near Market Harborough at 4.45pm on Saturday 13 June. Nottingham Forest take a 1-0 lead to Villa Park as they host Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final second leg. It's a slender advantage but Forest go into the game on the back of a 10 match unbeaten run and five wins in a row. Villa are fifth in the Premier League and have lost three games in a row but can Forest make it to the final in Istanbul? Their cause would certainly be helped if Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare and Dan Ndoye are passed fit. #nffc #nottinghamforest Matt Davies is joined by Dan Cook and Steve Battlemuch to preview the game in full.

Early Life and Cultural BackgroundBorn in Kenya in 1969, Alka moved to Leicester as a toddler. Raised in a strict Hindu household, she grew up with defined gender expectations: girls were encouraged to pursue education only as a precursor to arranged marriages within their caste. Despite an early interest in crime and pathology sparked by Agatha Christie novels, Alka initially followed a conventional path, working in insurance for nine years. The Turning Point: Defiance and DutyAlka's entry into the police was a profound act of personal rebellion and courage. Facing an unwanted arranged marriage to a man living abroad, she chose to break the engagement. This decision, coupled with her desire to join the police—a profession her family deemed unsuitable for a woman—resulted in her being asked to leave her family home and a long-term estrangement from her father, who was himself a traffic warden. In 1997, without knowing where she would live, Alka posted her acceptance to Leicestershire Police.Career Highlights and ChallengesAlka joined the service in 1998, training at Ashford during a time when Asian female officers were a "rarity". Her career spanned several diverse roles:Frontline Policing: She served in rural areas like Ashby and Coalville, where she faced significant racial abuse from the community.Specialized Units: She spent time in the Youth Offending Team, which allowed her to balance work with raising her children.Detective Work: Alka eventually became a detective, working in child abuse investigation, serious and complex crime, and a secondment in Counter Corruption, which she described as her toughest role due to the emotional weight of investigating colleagues.Mutual Aid: Near the end of her career, she assisted in Merseyside following the tragic murders of three children.Legacy and RetirementThroughout her 27-year career, Alka balanced the "heavy lifting" of being a mother, wife, and professional. She remains a staunch believer in meritocracy, refusing to join identity-specific police associations and instead focusing on her skills as an investigator.Upon retiring, she transitioned into her "second vocation": sports safeguarding. She currently works with the Leicester City Football Club Academy, aligning her professional expertise with her lifelong passion for sport. Despite the personal sacrifices, Alka maintains that she would do it all again "100%"The Story & Inspiration#BreakingBarriers#CulturalIdentity#ResilienceStory#WomenWhoInspire#PersonalGrowth#OvercomingObstacles#CourageousConversations#TrailblazerPolice & Detective Life#PolicePodcast#ThinBlueLineUK#DetectiveWork#WomenInPolicing#LeicestershirePolice#LawEnforcement#TrueCrimeCommunity#BehindTheBadgeCulture & Representation#SouthAsianExcellence#BritishAsian#RepresentationMatters#Leicester#ShatteringGlassCeilings#EmpoweredWomenCareer & Transition#CareerPivot#SportsSafeguarding#LCFC#SecondAct#ProfessionalDevelopment#WorkingMomsNiche & Catchy#FromPatrolToPitch#DefyingExpectations#DetectiveAlka#PodcastSpotlight Hosted on Acast. In the summer of 1976, one of the hottest on record, a young man's body was found in a ditch on a lonely Leicestershire road. At first, it looked like a hit-and-run. It wasn't. 25-year-old plumber Gary Toms had been in a relationship with a married woman named Marlene Evans. Her estranged husband, Harold Evans, had spent months watching the relationship develop, attending court for breach of the peace, attempting suicide, and quietly acquiring a pistol. At the turn of the twentieth century, a pattern of unusual deaths began to surface, when three unrelated women were found drowned in their bathtubs, following a fit or a feinting. The cases seemed unconnected, scattered across towns and surnames, until the similarities grew too precise to ignore. At the center of the widening suspicion was a man named George Joseph Smith, though very few actually knew him by that name until reports of his crimes began to filter into the newspapers, and purely by chance, people around the country began connecting the dots. Derek Hunt is an award-winning glass artist and educator, a Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an accredited stained glass conservator. He designs and makes glass artworks for public spaces, private homes and churches using methods to include traditional stained glass as well as working with new techniques such as screen and digital printing to push the creative boundaries of the medium. In addition to creating and restoring stained glass works, Hunt hosts specialist Master Classes throughout the year at his studio in Leicestershire, teaching adults glass painting methods and techniques. Additionally, he runs a popular YouTube channel making inspirational videos and tutorials as well as podcasts with his favorite stained glass artists. His Instagram is part promotion and part inspiration for anyone interested in the medieval art and craft of stained glass. Says Hunt: "My ambition is to ensure new stained glass not only survives but thrives in the 21st Century, and the very best way to do that is to inspire the next generation." Born in 1962, Hunt is a mentor for stained glass artists on the BBC series Make it at Market. He earned his B.A. (Hons) Degree in Art and Design from Edinburgh Art School, 1980 – '84. He established his studio, Limelight Studios Ltd., in 1985. The artist won a Guildford Design Award for his 9-panel memorial window at St. Martin's Church, East Horsley, Guildford in 2025. Other notable Hunt works include a new north aisle window for St. Mary's Church , Melton Mowbray in memory of John Plumb, a major church benefactor. The Tree of Life includes the coat of arms for Melton Borough Council and Melton Mowbray Town Estate. Other local references include a pork pie and Stilton cheese, and a dove with a brush dipped in red paint. This refers to an 1837 incident in which a drunk Marquis of Waterford and friends painted Melton Mowbray's toll-bar and other buildings red. For John Rylands University Library Manchester, Hunt created an 11-meter-tall glass sculpture entitled Totem, situated in the new extension to the Manchester University Library. Using a combination of digital printing and bonded handmade antique glass, the sculpture is back lit with an arrangement of LED lights. The design includes various visual references to the library's archive collections of important first edition books. Hunt has also undertaken stained glass conservation work on a number of notable buildings including Glasgow Cathedral, Coventry Cathedral, Kenilworth Castle Warwickshire, Oscott College Birmingham, Staveley Hall Derbyshire, Ayscoughfee Hall Lincolnshire, Manor Lodge Sheffield and Nevill Holt Hall Leicestershire. Says Hunt: "I help artists build their skills, confidence and creative style in stained glass. If you want to learn all about creating beautiful stained glass you've come to the right place. I'll help you navigate your creative journey, giving you the confidence to create. It's safe to say I've got lots of experience on everything to do with designing, making and conserving stained glass. Every project is unique, with a focus on collaboration and community engagement being at the heart of my many commissions."
