I hope I never get so lazy that I don't remember that this is all fantasyland. Newcastle United and Chelsea, in the Premier League, and we gave as good as we got. That still should boggle your minds. To remind me of how good the good times are, we have in the studio Paul Thomas and Greville Waterman. We think back to Chelsea at Griffin Park in the FA Cup, we talk about the matches of the last 5 days, and we look ahead to Arsenal away. Arsenal. In the league. Ok, that still boggles my mind.Text the pod!
Clint Scott and Dr. Mike Gustafson give you The Juice and discuss Team USA Hockey facing Canada in the Four Nations Championship, what could be done for Rip Griffin Park if it was to be renovated, Chance McMillian being placed in a boot, and what that means for Red Raider Basketball headed into the weekend. They also preview Texas Tech Baseball's home series vs. UC Irvine and who will start on the mound this week for the Red Raiders.

The season heats up fast, doesn't it?!? From the relative calm of a first week win we're suddenly playing three matches in 7 days. Liverpool and Colchester were lessons for Thomas Frank and warning shots for us all that there's a lot of drama coming in this 'dangerous forth season'.Apparently Ivan Toney is still at the club...well he was when I typed this - he may be gone by the time I hit 'publish'. Or we've got the lovable enigma for another 4 months. It's silly season, as guest Nick Green rightly puts it.Nick has some great memories of Griffin Park and growing up a Bee, and with Greville Waterman it's a fascinating conversation.Text the pod!

Old friend Lev Riley joins Tim and Greville this week in the ASFB studios for a really fascinating conversation. Lev tells us of his first trip to the Gtech, with side-trips to The Griffin pub and to the spot of old Griffin Park. It's (rightly) a bit of a sacred pilgrimage now for a visiting American Bees fan. The Gtech is great n'all...but I miss the old girl.It is the 10th year anniversary of promotion out of League One and fifteenth anniversary of our promotion from League Two, so we celebrate what a long, strange trip it's been with some memories from those campaigns. We look back a bit to the Everton match and look forward to the visit of our own noisy neighbours from Putney.

What a season. The Luton victory says as much about this lost season of such high expectations as any match could. Now that we are back to a near first team (ok...without Rico, Norgaard, Toney and DaSilva!!) we are rampant against a Luton side that really couldn't afford to be beaten. What could have been...This week Adam Harder and Greville Waterman join me in the ASFB studios. Adam is a fascinating and insightful guest that I've been eager for weeks to have on. He is here to discuss his experience as a Brentford fan, be it a walk down Braemar Road past Griffin Park to The Griffin pub or a Saturday morning pint of Guinness in the Red Lion with the lively crew that has grown there. We look back at the Luton match, and on to our effectively guaranteed future in the Premier League.

...there's no real reason to discuss Liverpool at all. Instead we talk his experiences around Griffin Park in the 1950s and 1960s. Really. What stories he has from a golden era of Brentford. Players I've heard of, he saw live! Greville Waterman and I sit at Malcolm's feet to hear stories of Tower, Cakebread, McDonald and many, many others.Whether you're a long-time Bee or just come to the club, this is a podcast worth your time.
An Argyle fan, who helped relegate the club. There wont be many with a story like Ryan Dickson, born in Saltash and an Argyle fan pretty much his entire life, Ryan grew up wanting to be like his heroes; Martin Phillips, Paul Wotton and Michael Evans. At 17 he got that chance, thrown in against Wigan Athletic, the runaway leaders in the Championship. Despite some impressive performances, injuries hampered his development and eventually a move to Brentford resurrected his career.A bit of a cult figure at Griffin Park, Dickson was destined for bigger things. Fulham and Southampton came calling and it was the pull of the south coast that tempted him. Training with the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he pushed on again. Then, at the end of the 2010/11 season, he helped relegate Argyle at Home Park. This is the story of Ryan Dickson.

On the show this time round is universally adored comic Nathan Caton, stand-up legend and host of That's My Team podcast. He's used to hearing his guests talk passionately about their football clubs, but for Ultimate XI Nathan himself is in the spotlight as manager of his boyhood club Brentford. Along with many other Bees fans, Nathan remembers the times before their Premier League achievements where Brentford were forced to wallow in the doldrums of League Two, but the side he picks reflects the years of transition and highlights the development of talent and transfer market savviness that took the west London side to their current heights. Featuring an obscenely attacking line-up from front to back, but particularly at the front, it was a true pleasure to hear the joy in Nathan's voice as he describes some of the heroes he's watched grace the turf at Griffin Park, and listening to him talk you can't help but get swept up in the buzz surrounding the Brentford story. Brentford F.C. Brentford Football Club is a professional football club based in Brentford, West London, England. They compete in the Premier League, the highest tier of English football, having gained promotion via the playoffs at the end of the 2020–21 Championship season. Nicknamed "the Bees", the club was founded in 1889 and played home matches at Griffin Park from 1904 before moving to Gtech Community Stadium in 2020. Their main rivals are fellow West London based clubs Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. Brentford initially played amateur football before they entered the London League in 1896 and finished as runners-up of the Second Division and then the First Division to win election into the Southern League in 1898. They won the Southern League Second Division in 1900–01 and were elected into the Football League in 1920. Brentford won the Third Division South title in 1932–33 and the Second Division title in 1934–35. The club enjoyed a successful spell in the top flight of English football, reaching a peak of fifth in the First Division, in 1935–36, their highest ever league finish, before three relegations left them in the Fourth Division by 1962. They were crowned Fourth Division champions in 1962–63, but were relegated in 1966 and again in 1973 after gaining promotion in 1971–72. Brentford spent 14 seasons in the Third Division after gaining promotion in 1977–78 and went on to win the Third Division title in 1991–92, though were relegated again in 1993. Brentford were relegated into the fourth tier in 1998 and won promotion as champions in the 1998–99 campaign. The club were relegated in 2007 and won promotion as champions of League Two in 2008–09 and then were promoted out of League One in 2013–14. They had unsuccessful Championship play-off campaigns in 2015 and 2020. Brentford have a poor record in finals, finishing as runners-up in three Associate Members' Cup / Football League Trophy finals (1985, 2001 and 2011) and losing four play-off finals (the 1997 Second Division final, 2002 Second Division final, 2013 League One final and 2020 Championship final). However, Brentford won the 2021 Championship final to be promoted to the highest level for the first time since the 1946–47 season. With Fulham coming to Griffin Park at the weekend, the Beesotted crew (and Sammy from Fulhamish podcast) met up at The Hydrant pub right next door to Monument station to discuss last minute goals and all sorts. On the menu for today was the QPR match - and Brentford's soft underbelly which has allowed teams to continually score soft goals against us whilst in winning positions. Ian Holloway's rant against QPR and Brentford fans. Dan Bentley - should he be dropped? Plus they recalled last minute goals that caused joy in some cases ... and tears in the other. Plus we spoke to Gemma from Brentford LGBT group LGBTees about the rainbow laces campaign being championed by football clubs up and down the country at the moment - with the Beesotted crew questioning whether the campaign should be getting more support from players (Twitter @lgbt_bees, Facebook: LGBeeTBrentford, Insta: LGBeeT_Brentford, Email LGBeeTBrentford@gmail.com) Plus we discussed favourite Fulham v Brentford matches and look forward to the big match at the weekend. Bob Booker was special guest at the first ever matchday social - held on the morning of the Millwall match at The Globe, Brentford. Bob - straight off the back of his book Ooh Ah - came to Brentford to give his unfiltered version of tales from his time at Griffin Park in the 70s, 80s and 90s. And a hilarious afternoon it was too. From him recalling the day when his mum met Terry Hurlock's dad who revealed to her his not so reputable occupation. To telling the tale of the team's team bonding session in Cyprus in preparation (or lack of preparation) for the Leyland Daf Final against Wigan. Proper tales. Proper jokes. Thanks of The Globe for hosting the event and Fullers for their complimentary pints of London Pride Unfiltered for the fans (and Bob of course) in the house. And of course, a big thanks to Bob Booker for entertaining us .
Coming out of the early-mid-season-late-early-season international break, Brentford should still be buoyed by the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough and ready to put the Lions to the sword at Griffin Park on Saturday. With a plethora of A-team players limbering up in the B-team earlier this week, there could be some welcome fresh legs in contention soon, however, Millwall have had a decentish start to the campaign (well its better than ours!) and they're not heading west just for a the fun of a knees up on a barge or a zeppelin… it's shaping up to be a PROPER London derby on no mistake. Please we talk to James Blewett - Millwall Half Way Line (@MillwallJDB) - about The Lions' start to this season, George Saville, Tony Craig and the Millwall Zeppelin This week's podcast took place in the Old Packhorse on Chiswick Green: hosted by Dave Lane, with Billy The Bee, Savvy Bee and ‘Shed End' Matt Allard.
Derby came to Griffin Park and parked their bus on the pitch. Brentford passed around them - 84% possession at one stage - but couldn't find a way through. Until the 86th minute. Derby's football was described as one fan as anti-football. Fans in the pub discussed that point plus lots more. #dcfc
Two more games played. Still no wins. Things are starting to get desperate. After a 1-1 draw against Reading - where Brentford should have bad the game wrapped up after 45 minutes - the Bees put out a much changed side against Norwich and were well and truly turned over. The fans weren't happy. How much longer can this go on for. The Beesotted came together for a solemn session in The Distillers pub in Fulham Palace Road - just down from Hammersmith station - where they drowned their sorrows in all manner of assorted Pride unfiltered beer and Black Cab stout. Did it make things any clearer? Not really. In the boozer: Billy Grant Dave Lane Matt Allard Lots and lots of questions including: The Reading and Norwich matches. Were Brentford justified in fielding a weakened side? Were the crowd justified booing the players? Taking away 1200 or so Norwich fans there were around 3500 Brentford fans in the stadium for the Norwich match. About as many as we took to Birmingham 7 years ago in the same round of the same cup. If the club can't be bothered to take it seriously then should they be upset if the fans don't take it seriously? Are Brentford lacking a leader? Is the balance of the team wrong? Are results now Dean Smith's responsibility or the Director of Footballs' responsibility? Plus we discuss the forthcoming social on Saturday 14th October on the morning of the Millwall home match which will feature a conversation and Q&A with Brentford legend Bobby Booker. We discuss random stuff from the forthcoming Big Griffin Park book. Lionel Road. The appointment of a woman to the Brentford board. With Brentford FC recently announcing changes in plans to the proposed new Brentford stadium at Lionel Road, Beesotted, BIAS (Brentford Independent Supporters Organisation), Bees United and the Griffin Park Grapevine decided it would be incredibly beneficial for fans and club execs to meet up to discuss the changes. The forum would give an opportunity for fans to ask questions to the club on the rational for the new stadium plans as well as give the club opportunity to clarify a number of points which were unclear after the recent announcement. And even after Matthew Benham's recent statement - which went some way to clearing a number of issues - (http://beesotted.com/?p=22946) fans still felt that the forum was useful. They were able to get more understanding on how the ‘premium seating' was going to work at Griffin Park. And were able to put pressure on the club to look at increasing the potential standing allocation from 1200 to over 2k fans - and possibly even more. Most importantly, the club have promised more dialogue in the future over the next stages of designing the inside of the stadium. On the panel: Billy Grant - Beesotted (chair) Gemma Teale - BIAS Cliff Crown - Brentford Chairman Mark Devlin - Brentford CEO Nity Raj - Brentford Director and Smart Odds CEO Dave Merritt - Bees United Director plus Trevor Inns - Griffin Park Grapevine - on the floor mic
The club announcements regarding the amended plans to the new stadium design and the implications of a reduced capacity and layout of the Lionel Road Stadium is the hot top of the week. The Beesotted crew talks at length and air their personal thoughts on a significant story and share their honest hopes and fears about leaving Griffin Park. There are also details of the joint fans forum hosted by Beesotted, BIAS, Bees United and the Griffin Park Grapevine, which takes place at St Paul's Church Hall, Brentford, on Saturday August 26, between 12:30 and 2pm before the Wolves home game. We also talk about the Bees' start to the season: looking back to the Nottingham Forest and Bristol City games, as well as forward to this weekend's trip to Ipswich Town and the League Cup clash with Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road next week. Brentford scored three. But let in four goals at Griffin Park. Two games. No points. Not exactly the start to the season they were expecting. After going one up and being in command, the Bees allowed forest to go 2-1 up at half time. It was all downhill from then. We spoke to Bees fans, Forest fans and Football on 5's Colin Murray in the pub after the match. #nffc #brentfordfc
With one league game and one cup game under their belt, Brentford fans have more idea of what to expect this season. Or do they? First up is Gary Roberts and Francis Joseph - a footballing double act if ever there is one. Theres two guys were hilarious. Forming a lethal striking partnership back in the 80s playing in the team with the killer midfield of Stan Bowles, Terry Hurlock and Chris Kamara, you could see that the Roberts/Joseph bond was still there 30 years later. They had the audience in stitches - cracking joke after joke. Gary Roberts claimed that he had invented the Cruyff turn - years before the master of the Cruyff turn Johan Cryff had actually coined the phrase. Francis Joseph told the audience how he was ‘tapped up' (allegedly) by Brentford in the bar after a match at Griffin Park after just destroying The Bees - scoring two goals in Wimbledon's comeback which saw them win 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half time. They talk about Stan Bowles' dodgy entourage - some sort of West London mafia. Another week, another couple of wins as the Bees racked up two 2-0 victories against Bristol City and Leeds United within 3 days of each other to continue their winning streak. But it was the performances that had everyone talking from fans in the pub to Leeds managed Gary Monk who claimed that "outstanding" Bees were one of the best sides he had seen this season. The Beesotted Crew met up at The Salutation Pub in King Street Hammersmith to shoot the breeze discussing the matches at the weekend, pontificating on whether there is ever a perfect situation for all fans, discussed their new video project which documents fans and Griffin Park which will be no more in a few years time ... discussed the forthcoming Fulham game - where Bees fans have been given 2800 tickets ... plus we discuss the changing face of Cardiff City football club and similar clubs - like Orient and Charlton - whose owners came in with positive and intentions (in some cases) but failed to deliver what the fans expected resulting in a decimation of the fanbase and a loss of soul of the club. Huddersfield came to Griffin Park chasing promotion points. The Bees were coming off a good win against Forest. What a difference 72 hours makes. After being torn apart by a vey good Chelsea side (4-0) where Brentford quite simply didn't really turn up, Aston Villa came to Griffin Park for the first time in 60 years and were torn apart by an absolutely rabid Brentford side to record their first victory against Villa ever (3-0). The Beesotted crew met in the Virtual Joint pub to discuss the Bees' contrasting fortunes over the two matches as well as reflecting on the transfer window that slammed shut a couple of hours after the Villa fail whistle that saw Hogan leave the nest for Villa for £12m and Sergi Canos join the Bees from Norwich. Brentford were unlucky against Newcastle. So they come again - ready to rhumble against Wigan this weekend and hopefully get themselves back on track with 3 points. The Beesotted crew linked up at the funky The Old Packhorse Pub in Chiswick to discuss celebrity photobombing, which Brentford celebrity they would get out of there, exactly where Brentford have got talent and even revealed their preferred Saturday takeaway in a distinctly (and quite silly) Ant and Dec themed podcast after the lads' appearance at Griffin Park at the weekend and consequentially being all over Bees fans' social media for the next few days. Getting back on track .. the crew also discussed the Newcastle match itself … the transfer window … ask are Saunders and McCormack off? … after the tribunal awarded Southend £1.1m for Bentley we also asked whether we are getting value for money for investments … Liberal Nick rants about not being able to choose your seat at Chelsea (or most football matches) … and we speak to Worbo from Wigan blog Latics Speyk (http://bit.ly/2iMhjSB) ….. After losing to Norwich 5-0, there was a hell of a lot to discuss as the Beesotted crew met in The Madhatter Hotel in Stamford St near The South Bank just South of the River. Brentford fans at the Norwich match were clearly angry with the team's display and lack of action then to rectify a team that was failing to pump on all cylinders - never mind one. They discussed the team's display, why we were so impotent, whether we were lacking in experience and leadership, had Smith lost the dressing room or were the players just not playing for the shirt. Also, with the heated discussions in the dressing room after the match, did we have another ‘Stevenage moment' - a replica of the moment when Brentford lost to bottom of the table Stevenage and had a 90 minute heated exchange in the dressing room .. a moment in time that turned then manager Uwe Rosler's season around from hanging n a thread to unbeaten run? We also discussed the rumours of Danish Coach Thomas Frank who was touted by Danish media to be joining Brentford's coaching staff imminently. Pls there was the £400k price tag put on John Egan - a bargain at half the price was the common consensus.
