While American tackle football has long been considered an exclusively male sport, this week's guest Russ Crawford ("Women's American Football: Breaking Barriers On and Off the Gridiron") takes us on an eye-opening journey over the decades that highlights the persistent and still-growing interest of women playing the game - including professionally. Anecdotal evidence abounds of amateur football competitions, collegiate intramural leagues, and even an 1926 NFL halftime exhibition featuring Frankford's "Lady Yellow Jackets" - proving women's intrigue with the sport. The women's game became more organized in 1965 with the launch of sports entrepreneur Sid Friedman's aspirational Women's Professional Football League, and later more forcefully in 1974 with the founding of the pioneering National Women's Football League - featuring notable teams such as the Houston Herricanes, Dallas Bluebonnets, Toledo Troopers, Oklahoma City Dolls, and Detroit Demons. Today, two robust national semi-pro outdoor leagues (the 60+ team Women's Football Alliance; the 18-club Women's National Football Conference), plus an increasingly evolved/credible indoor "X League" (fka as both the infamous "Lingerie," and later "Legends" Football League) - keep the women's gridiron game alive, with undoubtedly more pioneering to come. + + + PURCHASE Russ Crawford's book "Women's American Football: Breaking Barriers On and Off the Gridiron" in either hardcover or Kindle electronic versions NOW!
Don't worry everyone, Jared and Justin are here to rip that scab off and reopen the wound that was the Gonzaga game. They also cover some current events in their own lives--notably the rebirth of Justin's football career--as well as other news surrounding the sport of American football. They give you a recap of last week's games while looking ahead to this week's surprisingly (well, maybe not that surprising) tough road trip t0 Santa Clara and San Francisco. Lastly, they dip their feet into the waters of College Basketball and learn absolutely nothing once again. Enjoy!

The final episode of the Tour d'Écosse series covers the last three stages of the ride to visit each of Scotland's Football League grounds. Stage 13 of the trip takes Lionel and Simon from Montrose to Peterhead, via Aberdeen and a visit to Slains Castle, which inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. At 128 kilometres it's the longest stage of the entire tour too but, fortunately, it's somewhat tailwind-assisted. The following day, however, they battle a fierce headwind on the way to Elgin City's Borough Briggs, before the last leg takes them from Birnie to Dingwall, the home of the 42nd and final football club on their itinerary, Ross County. This episode also features a chat with Scotland's Commonwealth Games road race bronze medallist Finn Crockett, who supports Ross County. In total, over 15 days of cycling, they covered more than 1,300 kilometres and spent almost 58 hours in the saddle. The Tour d'Écosse was recorded by Lionel Birnie and Simon Gill. On the show this week, we welcome a bona fide legend - with 307 appearances for the Imps and 40 goals, Roger Holmes spanned two distinct eras; he played under Bill Anderson and alongside Andy Graver and was at the club when Dave Smith signed, and the embryonic 1976 team were being put together. He spent 12 years as a player with City and is a rare breed of one-club player. Even rarer was his feat of playing in three different divisions with City, all in the Football League. He was voted 36th in the 2007 poll looking for the club's best-ever players, and in 2020 he reached 41st in our top 100 players of a generation poll. We're honoured to have him talking about his career here on the podcast.

Stephen Guinan, author of "We are the Troopers: The Women of the Winningest Team in Pro Football History." The team in question, the Toledo Troopers, utterly dominated the National Women's Football League in the 1970s.
Author/team biographer Steve Guinan (We Are the Troopers: The Women of the Winningest Team in Pro Football History) helps us celebrate the return of football this week - with a look back at the unheralded story of the most dominant women's team of the 1970s -the Toledo Troopers. Winners of seven consecutive championships across two different leagues - Sid Friedman's barnstorming Women's Professional Football League (1971-72), and the pioneering true-pro successor National Women's Football League (1974-77) - the Troopers compiled an astounding 58-4-1 record over its nine years of life, including six seasons of undefeated play. Led by the league's most recognizable star Linda Jefferson and overseen by its hard-charging owner/head coach Bill Stout - the Troopers' roster was an unlikely assemblage of housewives, factory workers, hairdressers, former nuns, high school teachers, bartenders, mail carriers, pilots, and would-be drill sergeants - whose combined spirit, tenacity and simple "love for the game" helped create what even the hallowed Pro Football Hall of Fame officially recognizes as the “winningest team in professional football history.”
The FA Trophy gets underway with 79 ties and 158 Step 4 clubs getting it all started in the First Qualifying Round. We speak to two managers who have had unbeaten league starts and hope to transfer that form into an FA Trophy run too, although the league is always the priority. First up Newcastle Town's Robin Van de Laan. With over 300 Football League appearances and two Wembley finals he has plenty of experience to pass on the lads doing so well under him at the club where he not only runs the Academy but sits on the board and acts as first team manager. Returning to the show is former FA Trophy semi finalist Paul Smith. His Halesowen side have won 6 from 6 in the league this term topping the table but this weekend with the Trophy in focus, he recalls the near miss a few seasons ago and the Vase wins of 85 & 86 that sparked so much among the fans he knows will be getting behind his side this weekend. Executive Editor at The Non League Paper Jon Couch is on hand to round things off speaking managerial merry-go-rounds, table-toppers and the stories we will be reading in this weekend's edition.

It's the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. @FACupFactfile Phil Annets is on hand to feed stats and facts on the 112 ties before we talk to two managers involved in those ties. First up, Michael Clegg manager at Ashton United who have started brightly in the Northern Premier League and now embark on their FA Cup journey this weekend. Always honest and great value, his answer to the final question sums up Non-league perfectly. Also in FA Cup action are Grantham Town but in a week of upheaval their home tie has had to be switched, with their pitch needing to have emergency work done after being attacked by local crows searching for chafer grubs. Manager Matt Chatfield explains more and why the club are hoping for more support via their GoFundMe page whilst also juggling a league campaign and hopefully an FA Cup run. Jon Couch Executive Editor of the Non-League Paper helps round up the week's news including the streaming debate, players moving up in to the Football League and what's to come in this weekend's paper.
August was broadly rubbish. The Niis are aware of this. However, we now have some flat grass to play on and the transfer window has finally SLAMMED SHUT... and we didn't lose any of the fancy players we thought we might. Although we did lose lovely Dominic Hyam, who actually was one of the fancy players (even if he and many other people didn't realise it). That is ever such a shame. Stupid energy bills. So, after a few games and an equal amount of losses, things aren't quite perfect. Let's break things down for you. Shaun Cameron Wright-Phillips (born 25 October 1981) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Premier League and Football League for Manchester City, Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, in Major League Soccer for the New York Red Bulls, in the United Soccer League for the New York Red Bulls II and Phoenix Rising FC, and at senior international level for the England national team. Shaun joins Steven to talk about his incredible sporting career, the legacy living on through his family and what the future holds for the Wright-Phillips name, and how the game of football is changing. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's not enough to take the name you're given and lean on the history behind it. You have to put your own stamp on history. You have to try to do even better than those who came before you. The one thing you can't teach is raw talent. There are certain skills that are born into you, and that cannot be taught by any coach. There needs to be room for human error in football, especially when it comes to officiating. It adds to the drama and stokes debate, which is what keeps passion alive. Jake Smith is accompanied by Sam Macey to go over the key talking points from Pompey's 1-0 victory at Port Vale. The Blues have ended August at the summit of League One, having enjoyed an unbeaten start to the league campaign under Danny Cowley. On the show, the gaffer shares his feelings from Saturday's win and we also hear from homegrown midfielder Marlon Pack, who made his 500th Football League appearance at the weekend!
APBA Hall of Famer, former APBA Journal writer and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers statistician Ray Dunlap presents his league-building tips on Aug. 24, 2013, at the APBA Football Club's inaugural tournament at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Dunlap, co-founder of the Suncoast Football League in Tampa Bay, Florida, in 1979, lays out a wealth of knowledge — from the ideal number of teams in the league to how to keep members active. Aaron Paul is joined by EFL legend Jobi McAnuff and Port Vale left-back Mal Benning to talk all things Football League. The guys discuss Stoke's decision to sack Michael O'Neill after just one win in their opening five Championship games and who could replace him. Ipswich midfielder Lee Evans gives us some insight into what former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna is like to play for. And Crewe manager Alex Morris tells us whether it was awkward to take over from his friend and colleague David Artell after he was sacked last season.
Our next guest on the Official AFC Bournemouth Podcast is none other than Kieffer Moore, a man who only joined the club in January, but has had an unbelievable impact in fewer than ten club appearances. Not only did his strike against Nottingham Forest send us to the top flight, the forward has gone on to score on his Premier League debut just two days before his 30th birthday, making it four goals in six games for the Cherries. Since then, he's faced the likes of Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo, but still cites National League veteran Steve McNulty as his toughest opponent, as Moore spoke at length through the highs and lows of his career to date. The journey so far has seen him make four-hour round trips just to train, work in sweet shops to help pay his way and suffer a fractured skull shortly after breaking into the Football League. It's a podcast that you don't want to miss and one which promises plenty of laughs throughout.

On the eve of the last international break of the 2021/22 season, both Paul Warne and Karl Robinson were in a reflective mood, discussing their childhoods, footballing journeys and what they wanted to be when they grew up. Paul was a late bloomer as a player who went on to make over 260 appearances for the Millers before taking on the role as fitness coach and then manager. He also used to be a school teacher – something which he credits with helping shape his managerial philosophy. For Robinson, it was a very different path. He started coaching with Steve Heighway in Liverpool's academy before working with former England manager Sam Allardyce at Blackburn and eventually taking over from Paul Ince at MK Dons as the youngest manager in the Football League at 29. Paul's journey to becoming professional footballer is an emotional one filled with highs and lows. This is mirrored in the discussion with Karl, who has to pause the conversation to do something no first-team manager wants to and deliver a crushing blow to two Oxford youngsters.
