Remember When is a show that brings together football fans from across the UK to talk about the seismic moments that shaped their club's history - and had a massive impact on their own lives too. Rather than being about tribal division or comparing between the haves versus the have-nots, it's about the stories, the memories and the moments that unite us as football fans - whoever we support. This time, Remember When looks back at two of the most memorable FA Cup triumphs in English football history. Wimbledon and Portsmouth have suffered more than their fair share of hardship over the years, with trophy cabinets smaller than plenty of their Football League counterparts. But both clubs and their fans share an increasingly rare privilege: they won the FA Cup against the odds. Broadcaster Rick Edwards is joined by two guests who were right at the heart of the action. Marc Jones fell in love with Wimbledon after an inadvertent trip to Plough Lane in the 1980s and followed their ragtag bunch of cult heroes to the 1988 FA Cup final, where the Crazy Gang ended the day on that hallowed top Wembley step after beating a brilliant Liverpool team. Jeff Harris made a similar pilgrimage twenty years later, when his beloved Portsmouth scratched and clawed their way to the final of the 2008 FA Cup. He'd recently returned from working overseas for the British Army and watched Kanu and company complete their own journey to greatness at the new Wembley. Marc and Jeff share their hilarious and often heartfelt memories of seeing their local clubs reach footballing immortality. From that snowballing belief as their clubs marched through the rounds at the expense of numerous top-flight counterparts, to organising double-decker buses and flights back from military bases to make sure they joined friends and family at Wembley. They also remember the aftermath, as Jeff bolted back down to Portsmouth and joined in celebrations across the city while Marc caught sight of Wimbledon manager Bobby Gould bringing the trophy back to Plough Lane at the front of the team coach. They also touch on how these victories marked important moments in their own young lives, with football acting as the catalyst for moments of joy, melancholy and belonging. Remember When is a celebration of what football's all about: moments etched into history for the fans and players of two clubs who might never experience it again. This is Remember When… We Actually Won Something.

We have completed the Easter period and remain, somewhat inexplicably, in as strong a position as we started. 6th place, 3 points clear, with our destiny very much in our own hands. This merry bunch of sods will talk you through things, and also the general contempt towards the quality of the league this season. Sure, there's some questioning about "how good are we?" but also some "please just get us to the play-offs, we want another adventure". It's Joey, Neil, Dom and Gav for this one. We asked Paul but he blamed a crossbar for impairing his view at Plymouth, and thus, was unavailable to talk about it. Eddie breaks down his day at The Grove for a corporate golf outing. The start of the NHL and NBA playoffs has filled up some sporting diaries, but can Arsenal make it to a Champions League final? Or will PSG continue their recent European success, and will Barcelona or Inter Milan join them in Munich? We're then joined by Brett Johnson, CEO of Benevolent Capital, minority owner of Ipswich Town, and co-founder and owner of Rhode Island F.C. Ipswich have experience almost unprecedented success over the last couple of seasons, but what have been the keys to their success, what plans are in place for their return to the Championship, and can the gap between the Premier League and the Football League be closed? And does the introduction of promotion and relegation to the USL pose a serious threat to the MLS's place at the top of the US Soccer pyramid?

Today we welcome Exeter City CEO Joe Gorman. This show is long in the making. One of the most requested guests we have had. Why? Well Exeter are one of football's biggest rarities; a fan owned club. This means they cannot rely on the wealth and exuberance enjoyed by many to succeed on and off the pitch. They actually have to try and make the business make sense. Punching above their weight for many years, the club sits in League One alongside mega rich teams like Birmingham and Wrexham, and are more than competitive. So how does a club owned by 4700 fans paying £24 a year compete at the top level? How have they turned a £5m investment into the academy to a return of £20m. And why is Joe adamant this is a club here to be the best football team, not just to pat on the head and applaud for doing things unusually well. A truly unique model. A truly unique conversation. This is the other side of the ‘Business of Football'. On today's show we discuss: Exeter: A Fan-Owned Club: What does it mean to be owned by the fans and how does it actually work when you have over 4700 ‘owners' involved in the club? Is Joe's job made easier or harder without having the pressures exerted on management by demanding multi-millionaire owners chasing the glories of Premier League football? How does the business of the club actually work in the context of making decisions to spend money. Is it consensus driven? The importance of building trust: “the fans need to know I have the best interests of the club at heart” Why this is more than a club to patronise for doing well off the field and how Joe, along with manager Gary Caldwell, is installing a winning culture from top to bottom. Would the club ever look for investment away from the fanbase? A Unique Playing Model: When you can't go out and spend millions on a star player, how do Exeter uncover talent who fit their model? The importance of creating value for top teams by nurturing talent and being a home that clubs want to send their brightest young players to. Buying players for 5-figures and selling them for 7-figures; winning for Exeter is more than just 3 points on the pitch. The value of the sell-on clause: why having a percentage sale on players sold is such a valuable cash flow addition. The fanbase needs to understand and get behind this business model for it to work. How do they relate to a team with pure ideals that may have a ‘success ceiling'? Competing in the EFL: The financial disparity between clubs even in League One is becoming more apparent than ever. How do Exeter leverage their unique model to compete with big spenders? Are clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham good for the Football League? Whose responsibility is it to capitalise on the increased exposure afforded to the football league with big investors and TV deals now a common occurrence? Why does Joe fear wage inflation will be the thing that makes competing on a manageable playing field too hard to navigate? And to our amazing partner: Orreco https://www.orreco.com/

The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
If you are in England on the nice Spring weekend of March 22nd, I hope you didn't book the trip to see a Premier League game. Because there are none. It's a dreaded national team break again. But on the other hand, that weekend may also be one of the best to soak in English football culture, because it's the Annual “Non-League Day," an annual, grassroots-led spotlight on non-professional football in England, a chance for those clubs to "promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football," for fans who don't follow the big clubs across the country to show support for their local amateur side - and a chance for the educated soccer fan to look into the bottom of the English league pyramid, and find there is a lot of vibrancy, passion and sacrifices there. Today, in preparation, we are highlighting that day and the work and volunteers surrounding it, with James Doe, who founded the Non League Day in 2010 as a kind of social media experiment, and has overseen its growth to something that is now supported by the Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselvesHELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Non-League Day websiteNLD on X and InstagramThe English Football League System explained on WikipediaNEW: send me a text message! Hallo. Neil here. I'm not on this week's podcast and yet I demand full responsible for uploading it. I'm currently swigging a Friday afternoon pint in a place that's too noisy, so have no idea what the episode is about, but all I know is that it's going to be a national sensation. Hello Rank Squad!Today we decided to take a look at the current state of the Premier League, which has had an exclusive winners club since it broke away from the Football League in 1992. Seven teams have won a 'Premier League' title since that time, and we wanted to take a look at who could become the eighth. (Yes, we know football didn't begin in 1992, but it makes for an interesting discussion...) Dean walks us through his top five contenders to join that winner's circle, discussing Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, and why each should look to the future with hope and optimism. Jack doesn't agree with them all, but that's part of the fun. Before we get into that, there's time to discuss the goings on from the FA Cup at the weekend - which Dean looks at through a personal lens, and the levels between Fulham and Manchester United throughout his life; whilst Jack is just excited that there's a real possibility we see a new name on the trophy this season. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

We also explore the complexities of disagreeing with others around you at football, and not losing your shit when somebody tells you to stop being so loud. If that's not enough, we also talk about Coventry City IN FULL. Please note: We have strong love feelings for all the Cov players and many humans in general. Today Virginia is chatting with Frankie De La Cretaz. Frankie is an award-winning journalist whose work sits at the intersection of sports, gender and culture. They are the co-author of Hail Mary, the rise and fall of the National Women's Football League, and their writing has been featured in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Atlantic and more.Frankie also writes Out of Your League, a newsletter about queer sports and pop culture, which I consider a must-subscribe. If you have been remotely following the issues of trans women in sports, you likely already know how well Frankie calls out that bias and discrimination. As Frankie points out, the way bodies are policed and controlled in the sports world is really just a microcosm of how the bodies of queer, trans, and otherwise marginalized folks are being policed and controlled throughout our culture right now.So even if you think you don't care about sports, I promise you'll care about this conversation. If you find today's episode valuable, please consider supporting our work with a paid subscription!Guest interviews are always free on Burnt Toast, but paid subscriptions enable us to pay guests for their time, labor and expertise.
