Here's a fact you may not know: Minnesota is home to the oldest continuously-operating Alano Club in the world. It's a space for addiction recovery meetings and fellowship, and it's a beautiful building, too — a historic mansion in South Minneapolis. It's also the setting for a comedy show next week featuring four Minnesota comedians. It's called “Recovery Riot: A sober night of stand-up comedy.” All proceeds will benefit the Alano Club. Patrick Strait is one of the organizers behind the show. He talked with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.

Mike Grant recently published a book called (Re)Making A Sandwich. It's a creative nonfiction memoir that follows him for 6 years as he goes through treatment to fulfill the requirements of an intensive diversion program for habitual drunk drivers. Early in his recovery he started running as a way to manage emotions and stress. He was running to parks with his son who was 4 when he got sober, which was about a 1/2 mile away. He kept at it and in his 9.5 years of recovery he has run 6 marathons, 2 50 mile races, and completed his first 100 mile ultra marathon this past August. He also went back to school to work in addiction, he has his LCSW and is a certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He has partnered with the Alano Club here in Portland to create a running club called RUN TRG. The TRG stands for The Recovery Gym which is a gym that is funded by a SAMSHA grant which provides free CrossFit classes for people who identify in recovery 3 times a day M-F and a class on Saturday. Part of the grant allows for a running club which we created. They have 3 organized runs per week that are led by an amazing coach and myself. They have races that they train for as a group and individual races as well. If you are doing the training runs the club will help cover the cost of the races to get people training for events. It's the best recovery he has been a part of. They're like family, people are meeting goals and pushing themselves to do things that they didn't know they were capable of. Plus they have almost no one relapse, which is the real goal right! Mike is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He currently works as an addiction therapist for Kaiser Permanente and as an adjunct professor in the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program at Portland Community College. Mike received his Bachelors and Master of Social Work degrees from Portland State University. Mike is a member of the RUN TRG running group for people who identify in recovery. Mike enjoys training for ultra-marathons in his spare time and has recently completed both a 100 and 50 mile endurance race. Mike is working towards starting a private practice called Aid Station Sports Performance Therapy to help people meet performance goals in 2022. Mike lives with his son in Portland, Oregon.
Hello friends! Portland-based singer/songwriter, Kasey Anderson is my guest for episode 1060! He has two new albums recorded years ago that came out in April, Let The Bloody Moon Rise and it's live companion, Wednesday Night, 'Round Nine. Go to kaseyandersonmusic.com for music, videos, tour dates and more. We have a great conversation about how the last decade has seen him go from promising singer/songwriter to succumbing to addiction, being incarcerated, getting in recovery, starting a family and dedicating himself to helping others in recovery through Alano Club of Portland, being a "gradually retiring songwriter", his time during the pandemic and much more! I had a great time getting to know Kasey. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Find millions of songs and thousands of podcasts including How Did I Get Here? on Spotify. Early on in my sobriety, I had a friend who would not let go of a particular feeling of being wronged. She suffered daily, over the course of 2-3 weeks. Gradually she stopped going to meetings and stopped coming to the Alano Club. I remember learning one Friday night that she was out with some “old playmates”. I tried to speak with my friend, but she did not want to hear all the reasons she had to be grateful. She seemed to prefer the needless suffering over something out of her control. I finally said to her, “maybe you should go get drunk.” Do you know what? That was the only advice she was willing to take. Fortunately, she came to her senses in a couple of days and was able to make it back to AA. To my knowledge, she is sober to this very day. She was one of the lucky of the lucky ones The post Episode #199- Tuesday The Fix: Letting Go of Needless Suffering appeared first on Recovery Guy.

For many people in addiction recovery, going to in-person meetings regularly is what makes the difference between sobriety and relapse. The Alano Club of Portland is part of a coalition providing online resources to support those in recovery, and is among those working to provide more online meetings. The Alano Club’s Brent Canode joins us to tell us more and about what still needs to be done to support people without internet access. We also talk with Katie Crocker, who has been sober for 9 years and volunteers with the group Tempest, focused on recovery for women and those who identify as women.
It's not uncommon to see people consuming coffee, cigarettes, and sugary snacks at an AA meeting. A recent article in the "Street Roots" newspaper highlighted the role of unhealthy eating in recovery. We talk with two people who are trying to change that with a focus on fitness and healthy recipes. Brent Canode is the executive director of Alano Club of Portland, which runs the Recovery Gym. Liv Pennelle is a writer, founder of Liv’s Recovery Kitchen and co-host of the Breaking Free podcast.
Can We Chose Thanks for tuning into this podcast. As we all know, our addicted life left us without any choice. We had become internally convinced that we no longer had any power. Once we came to that realization, our addiction went deeper and deeper. Many of those like us would eventually die as a direct result of our alcohol and drug consumption. As we entered sobriety and began (little by little) to see through the lens of recovery we began taking things back. We learned to let go of the things that held us hostage and began to choose things that gave us freedom. In this episode, I explore the ways we can choose and the power we must do so. I utilize the writings of Bill Wilson and his excerpts from As Bill Sees It as my primary source of reference. This book contains such great truths and it is in a topical format. Finding specific information is made easy. You can find this book at https://www.aa.org/assets/en_US/aa-literature/b-5-as-bill-sees-it or you can pick one up on Amazon or at your local Alano Club. “Can We Choose”, you bet we can! The longer we live out our sober life, according to the Plan of Recovery, we make better choices. I love being able to choose, instead of having life choices made for me, don't you?
