Warning 18+ Adult Content Lyn talks to Dr. Liat Yakir, author of the book "Brief History of Love," about the biology of love, as well as the three stages of love - attraction, infatuation, and attachment - and the role of hormones like testosterone, oestrogen, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin in each stage. Dr Yakir looks at the challenges faced in long-term relationships, the importance of maintaining high oxytocin levels, and provides insights on how to sustain a healthy relationship. KEY TAKEAWAYS Love can be divided into three stages - attraction, infatuation, and attachment, each characterised by different hormones and emotions. To sustain a healthy relationship, focus on activities that elevate oxytocin levels such as hugging, kissing, dancing, and sharing burdens. Shift the focus from penetration to overall intimacy, including touch, eye contact, and skin-to-skin contact, to enhance sexual satisfaction in long-term relationships. Learning to fight efficiently and reconcile within one and a half hours after a disagreement can lead to a more stable and fulfilling relationship. Embrace authenticity in relationships, appreciate each other's traits, and prioritise self-love to attract a partner who complements rather than completes you. BEST MOMENTS "We need to divide love into three stages... attraction, infatuation, and attachment. In every stage, we have different hormones that play in our brain and our body." "We named love only the stage that we become crazy about the person or about love, not even about the person, but about feeling to be in love." "We need to understand that this is part of nature, this is part of our biology. We can outsmart it and we can win, but we have to understand that it will take effort." "We need to change how we think about sex... It's not about the number of penetrations but about the times we were sexual with each other, about the intimacy rather than the actual penetration." "It isn't about looking for somebody to complete you. It's about feeling complete within yourself and then attracting a partner that's going to complement you, not complete you." Israel wasn't slamming the door on renewed indirect prisoner swap negotiations with Hamas when it this week barred David Barnea, the head of Mossad, the country's foreign intelligence agency, from travelling to Qatar to explore possibilities for renewed exchanges. Instead, it was maneuvering for greater leverage in potential talks and expressing doubts about whether Hamas could deliver a second temporary truce in the Gaza war that would make further prisoner swaps possible.

When it comes to hormones, everyone has them all, but their levels are where things get interesting. How chemicals affect estrogen signaling in the brain is the research focus of Troy Roepke, Rutgers, who talks to co-hosts Anne Chappelle and David Faulkner about how gender is not easily defined biologically, what it is like to be a “fabulously queer” professor, and how science can better serve the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities.About the GuestTroy Roepke, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Department of Animal Sciences, where their research goal is for a greater understanding of the interaction between novel steroid (estrogen) signaling pathways, neuroendocrine functions, maternal and adult diets, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals on homeostatic functions controlled by the hypothalamus, as well as the long-term consequences of maternal exposures to low doses of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in model species and how these maternal exposures may affect normal adult offspring physiological functions. In addition to their teaching and lab duties, Dr. Roepke serves as Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Dr. Roepke believes one of the most important aspects of being an openly queer professor is to create a lab environment that is supportive of all historically excluded students and trainees, especially LGBTQ+ students. They believe that great science happens when one creates a supportive, diverse, and inclusive environment that prioritizes teamwork, positivity, and respect wherein each team member feels welcomed and encouraged to bring their true authentic selves to the lab.Dr. Roepke received a doctorate in physiology with a designated emphasis in reproductive biology from the University of California Davis in 2005. Their postdoctoral training was at Oregon Health & Science University, studying the neuroendocrinology of estrogens from 2005 to 2011 where they were the recipient of a K99/R00 Pathways to Independence Award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to study how endocrine disruptors influence metabolism.

Dealing with your child's additional health diagnosis on top of T1D can ramp up the stress and anxiety for parents. Today's question comes from a parent who is navigating this difficult road with her teen. Join us to hear the conversation.Show Highlights:Guest: Janelle, whose daughter Michaela (16) was diagnosed with T1D at age 12Testing has recently revealed that Michaela has a very rare antibody syndrome in which 75% of her dosed insulin is not usable, which leaves her needing unusual amounts of insulin. The unpredictability of her levels with this antibody syndrome adds a new layer of stress, and her doctors aren't even sure of what to do.Janelle's Question: “Why does this new diagnosis feel like we are going through the initial T1D diagnosis all over again, including the grief and other strong emotions that we have felt before?”JoAnne's Answer: “There is a fear of the unknown with this new diagnosis, and I applaud you for the way you are talking about it. I think that getting connected with support can be helpful in many ways, and you can often find these people on various social media platforms. It is also important to find medical providers who may be at the most elite institutions and have knowledge of her rare condition. It is scary to be dealing with something like this fluctuating and life-threatening condition without having the right care team in place. Since you have said that your daughter doesn't want to wear an insulin pump, now might not be the right time to take that step. With that being said, if the short-acting insulin does not induce the antibody syndrome and the long-acting insulin does, that would be a very good reason to put her on a pump. I'm all for letting the child make the decision on that, but it's not just ‘her body' if you, her parents, are deeply involved. As with any other illness or disorder, people don't always get to choose their treatment. Regarding the emotional piece of this situation, this is a stressful experience, and you are having to navigate and manage this as the rock for your family. I encourage you to hold steady and know that you are advocating for your daughter and holding the line for your family. Being there for your family is powerful, but it's not a permanent situation. You need support. Having more resources and more community around you can help, even though it would be a very small community who also deals with this rare condition. As always, the larger T1D community is always helpful for support.” Resources:Visit my website for available resources and upcoming courses/webinars: www.diabetessweettalk.com *Visit my website to get my Self-Care Kit to bring more ease and balance into your diabetes management routine! *For help with the emotional and parenting challenges of facing T1D management, join one of our live recording sessions by clicking the banner at the top of the website homepage. *For help in diabetes management, check out Sweet Talk's Put Diabetes In Its Place coaching course. In this portion of this series featuring the tender stories of individuals learning about the complexities of the LDS eternal marriage theology first hand, Valerie visits with Cindy, a woman brave enough to share her story of her two marriages. Her first marriage was the result of young Cindy's desire to please her orthodox family, her ward, and her church by marrying the Mormon “ideal man” despite her own reservations and internal discomfort. Listen in as she shares her tender memories as an idealistic young woman trying to earn love, measure up to her learned ideas of enoughness in a patriarchal system, and finally her eventual strength to divorce and truly begin her journey to selfhood. When she fell in love with a “non-member” [insert a gasp here, please] she was consoled by the hope that eventually he would see the light, conform, convert, and therefore make everything okay. What unfolds is a beautiful story of deep love, compassion, and patience…on the part of Cindy's husband, as he waited for her to grow up and realize that their marriage was precious just exactly as they each were—different, complex, and accepting of the otherness of the other. Cindy's story is evidence that marriage is not about right belief and religious conformity. It is about patience, grace, and love. ____________________________________________________Contact Valerie at info@valeriehamaker.com to get on a waitlist for one of her space limited processing/support groups mentioned in this episode: New group forming April 2023. ____________________________________________________ To financially support the Latter Day Struggles podcast, donate via Venmo @valerie-hamaker (last 4 digits 3447 if applicable) and THANK YOU for so many enquiring on how to support our work! ____________________________________________________
