Welcome to the Vikings Daily Opener for May 22nd, 2023. In today's episode, we have some interesting news and stories for you. First, we have US Senator Amy Kloubuchar honoring Bud Grant, who is a national hero, with an act of congress that recognizes his achievements with the Minnesota Vikings. Bud Grant's son, Mike Grant, was presented with the act of congress at a memorial held for his father at U.S. Bank Stadium. Grant was the legendary head coach of the Vikings who passed away at the age of 95. Next, we have an article reporting that Zoltan Buday of Pro Football Focus, who identified Khyiris Tonga as the Minnesota Vikings' breakout candidate. Tonga, a defensive lineman, is expected to play a big role on the Minnesota defense as a starting interior defender. He excelled as a pass rusher and was good against the run, making him a potential gem for the Vikings. Moving on, we have a report on the 2024 NFL draft prospects by Tyler Forness. He has identified Caleb Williams, the USC quarterback, as the top prospect for the upcoming draft. Williams won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and has all the traits of an elite quarterback. J.J. McCarthy, the Michigan quarterback, and Michael Penix Jr., the Washington quarterback, are also top prospects for the draft. In addition, Tyler Forness writes about how Mekhi Blackmon, a USC cornerback selected by the Vikings, can impact the Vikings defense. Blackmon was ranked at 185 on the consensus board, but the Vikings selected him early because of his skill set. Finally, we have Pro Football Network's Arif Hasan ranking the Vikings as one of the league's worst defenses. Despite the hiring of defensive coordinator Brian Flores and upgrades to the defense, many don't expect the Vikings to see significant improvement on that side of the ball. That's all for today's episode of the Vikings Daily Opener. Stay tuned for more news and stories on the Minnesota Vikings. What do we say? SKOL VIKINGS! Hosted by Dave Stefano @Luft_Krigare. Mike Grant recently published a book called (Re)Making A Sandwich. It's a creative nonfiction memoir that follows him for 6 years as he goes through treatment to fulfill the requirements of an intensive diversion program for habitual drunk drivers. Early in his recovery he started running as a way to manage emotions and stress. He was running to parks with his son who was 4 when he got sober, which was about a 1/2 mile away. He kept at it and in his 9.5 years of recovery he has run 6 marathons, 2 50 mile races, and completed his first 100 mile ultra marathon this past August. He also went back to school to work in addiction, he has his LCSW and is a certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He has partnered with the Alano Club here in Portland to create a running club called RUN TRG. The TRG stands for The Recovery Gym which is a gym that is funded by a SAMSHA grant which provides free CrossFit classes for people who identify in recovery 3 times a day M-F and a class on Saturday. Part of the grant allows for a running club which we created. They have 3 organized runs per week that are led by an amazing coach and myself. They have races that they train for as a group and individual races as well. If you are doing the training runs the club will help cover the cost of the races to get people training for events. It's the best recovery he has been a part of. They're like family, people are meeting goals and pushing themselves to do things that they didn't know they were capable of. Plus they have almost no one relapse, which is the real goal right! Mike is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He currently works as an addiction therapist for Kaiser Permanente and as an adjunct professor in the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program at Portland Community College. Mike received his Bachelors and Master of Social Work degrees from Portland State University. Mike is a member of the RUN TRG running group for people who identify in recovery. Mike enjoys training for ultra-marathons in his spare time and has recently completed both a 100 and 50 mile endurance race. Mike is working towards starting a private practice called Aid Station Sports Performance Therapy to help people meet performance goals in 2022. Mike lives with his son in Portland, Oregon.
We are happy and proud to announce our second release in this so difficult year 2021. Music, at least for us, was an important factor to get through well mentally, always keeping the smile and remembering the long club nights when we seemed to be almost unstoppable and forgot everything around us. Where everything became one and trivialities no longer counted. Where everyone was like the other. We also had this feeling when we got to know Pietro aka Peter LC (@petermlc) from Italy through our label buddy @berlinanton, who runs his project and label @discodiscorecords. His tracks convinced and during the first video call it turned out that Pietro is a super nice, likeable guy - who already shows his extraordinary talent in his young years. Mastered by Nico Lahs (@nico-lahs) who recently released an EP on Mike Grant's legendary M&G label, we are happy to present this super fresh sounding deep house 4-tracker strictly designed for the dancefloor.

We're really excited to welcome Modern House Quintet to the podcast. The Parisian duo have been putting out some superb freewheeling analog jams in recent times, focusing on slow-burning grooves and melodic improvisation (see also some lush sounds under their Cyclades moniker). Their wonderful mix for us is almost entirely comprised of unreleased material, all made by their own fair hands as is the Monologues Podcast way. *How would you describe your sound?* It’s always a tricky question. I would say that I try to do different things every time. A concrete example : the new release (CYC 003) contains five tracks which are quite unalike : one is a piano and guitar "housy" piece. The other is more dub-techno oriented. The third one has a more delicate house feeling, whereas the next one has a breakbeat-jungle vibe. The final one is kind of a vibraphonic interlude. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Lots of immense jazz musicians : Milt Jackson, Red Garland, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagan, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Clifford Brown, Kenny Clarke. Within the electronic scene : Lars Bartkhun, Basic Channel, Mike Grant, Omar S, Anthony Nicholson, Ron Trent, Volcov. Outside the electronic scene : Steve Reich and Philip Glass. On a different perspective, there is also the work of the dubplates & mastering engineers: Helmut Erler, Christoph Grote-Beverborg or Rashad Becker. The lacquering/cutting process has always been fascinating to me. It’s not an "influence" strictly speaking, obviously, but their work is impressive and it is inspiring somehow, yes. There are also soundtracks and movies, of course : as such, the italian TV show "Gomorra" is a wonder ("Suburra" as well by the way). The guys from Mokadelic did an incredible work. And I really like Eric Rohmer's movies, even though there is little music in them. All these things have, one way or another, an influence. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The mix gathers strictly unreleased productions and one song previously released in 2018, on the Modern House Quintet label. I tried to do something varied, quite heterogenous so that the listener - and me - cannot be bored. Therefore, some songs are more techno, some have a sort of an ethereal atmosphere whereas others have a more "housy" feeling. Some are sketches whereas others are more "completed". About the tracklisting, I simply wrote "unreleased" with a short indication next to it, merely because I don’t have an accurate title yet, haha. Tracklist:1. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the atmospheric one)2. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy/vibraphonic one)3. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the slow techno one)4. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the arpeggio one)5. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the techno bassy one)6. Modern House Quintet - LD 3 (MHQ 008)7. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the strictly techno one)8. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy one)9. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jungle/breakbeat one) Want more music? For his 5th contribution to Avenue Red we welcome back the Saint Petersburg-born, one-of-a-kind record digger/collector/DJ Dmitry Gusev with yet another hot blend of aces. "Hello friends! This mix was recorded about 3 years ago, but I still really like the music I put together in this particular mix... and now I want to release the mix here on Avenue Red, where I think it finally belongs. I had no particular idea for this mix. I spontaneously selected 3-4 current tracks from 2014 and the rest are tracks from different decades. But I always say: it does not matter from which decade track comes, only the quality counts. Here you will find tracks from 1990 to 2014 which all fit together very well. I use many tracks from true Chicago and Detroit legends: Derrick Carter, Dez Andres, Scott Grooves, Kai Alce, Mike Grant, Glenn Underground and many more. Many tracks are personal favourites for many years. I can say this for sure: House music will never die! I think this mix will fit very well to coming summers. This mix like all my mixes was a vinyl only session recorded in one take. Enjoy it. A little later I will post a full Playlist." Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Mike Grant/Moods & Grooves on Facebook: goo.gl/IIyWhD @mikegrant50 http://www.big50entertainment.com/ At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin. Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills. During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open. During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast. Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance. In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Additionally, he’s remixed the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” been selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selected and participated in DEMF/Movement, and included in the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

On today's episode, Duane speaks with Mike Grant about his recovery story and how he used running as a tool to help him through his recovery process. Mike currently works in the health care system as a licensed clinical social worker. He primarily works with people stuck in addiction. He's an alcohol and drug counselor and the author of (Re)Making A Sandwich: An Addiction Case Study. As a lover of ultra marathons, Mike started a local running club for people in recovery and they have organized runs and done races together. Mike grew up with some anger issues as a result of things that happened in his home. He started drinking at 13 years old and thought it would help him for many years. Instead, drinking at such a young age stunted his emotional development. He lacked the emotional skill set he needed to make good decisions in his life.Part of Mike's story was being a habitual DUI offender. After being placed on county probation due to multiple DUI offenses, Mike finally realized that the consequences of his drinking could negatively affect his son. He got tired of backtracking his life with law issues, financial issues, and everything else he couldn't juggle or keep straight because of his relationship with alcohol. Knowing that he needed mandated treatment for himself, Mike did a three-year diversion program that changed his life and he has been sober ever since. The diversion program was more of a life management program to him than a non-drinking program because he learned how to live life in a lot of ways.Ultimately, working with people in active addiction allows Mike to connect with the rawness of what addiction really is. There's no romanticizing it from the side of recovery because he knows what it's really like. In this episode, you will hear:Mike's alcohol addiction and recovery journeyHow he invested in his progress through runningHow to make the huge mental shift from “I can't” to “I can”How running helps some people in recoveryWhy grit is a transferable skill you can bring from addiction to recovery Key Quotes:[07:02] - "I would make some progress in something and then alcohol would knock me back or my behaviors while drinking would knock me back."[12:04] - "I've shifted this perspective of shame-based thinking where I can't do something to why can't I?"[13:27] - "If you actually enjoy the work that you're doing, it can make a workweek more tolerable."[14:31] - "Running is a metaphor for so many things. You have to do it. No one can do it for you. Set goals. You get out there and do it."[19:01] - "When you're in recovery, building grit is so important because you've got to weather some difficult things."[19:28] - “Grit is a transferable skill from your addiction…if you can use those skills that you learned in your addiction and bring to your recovery, that grit will get you far.”[22:33] - “Life doesn't have to be changed overnight. You just do little consistent things and get back to it, and monumental things can happen in 10 years.”[26:09] - “Life is messy and beating yourself up over it isn't going to help.”Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
