Happy Monday, my Friend! Welcome to Inside the Minds of Authors, and we are back to our regular scheduled of Monday night's releases. After 12 amazing days of new authors with exceptional books, this Monday it no exception. The award-winning historical fiction author, Ms. Alda P. Dobbs, is on the program this evening. I'm so exciting to be chatting with her. Ms. Alda is taking us back to 1913 and the world of twelve-year-old Petra Luna as she leads her family to safety in a “perilous journey to cross the U.S. border during the Mexican Revolution.” This incredible journey is based on a true story. I'm so inspired not only by this book but also by Ms. Alda's perseverance to bring her book to live. Alda talks about her inspiration for Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna and her newest book The Other Side of the River with Debbie and Lesley.
The Mexican Revolution in the early 20th Century was a pivotal moment in Mexican history, and it was also a pivotal moment in United States history, as huge numbers of Mexicans fled war-torn Mexico and headed to the US border. Many Mexican Americans in the US today are the descendants of refugees fleeing the Revolution. To understand more about the experience of immigrants who came to the United States during the Mexican Revolution, I'm speaking in this episode with writer Alda P. Dobbs, author of middle grade novels Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna and The Other Side of the River. Alda P. Dobbs and I discuss writing about the Mexican Revolution as well as her own family's history in her new novel, BAREFOOT DREAMS OF PETRA LUNA, and then translating that story into a second language. We talk about how Alda gained confidence as a writer, the advice she received from Avi, how she applied for grants and became “hardheaded,” found her literary agent, sold a book and wrote another during a pandemic, and so much more. Oh, and I accuse her of back engineering flying saucers while she was in the air force:) Alda P. Dobbs is the author of the upcoming novel Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna. She was born in a small town in northern Mexico but moved to San Antonio, Texas as a child. Alda studied physics and worked as an engineer before pursuing her love of storytelling. She's as passionate about connecting children to their past, their communities, different cultures and nature as she is about writing. Alda lives with her husband and two children outside Houston, Texas.
