It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. Mayrhofer, on behalf of the California Historical Association, Native Sons of the Golden West, Native Daughters of the Golden West, and The San Diegans. The flag is composed of three vertical bars, from left to right, red, white and gold. In the center white field is the official seal of the City and beneath it the date "1542," the year explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first entered San Diego Bay and claimed the area for Spain. The use of the three vertical bars is reminiscent of the colors of the flag of Spain, which flew over Cabrillo's ship. Official City of San Diego Seal The official seal of the City of San Diego consists of a coat of arms within a circle. Above the arms are the names of the City and the state, and below the arms is the City’s official motto. official seal of the City of San Diego In 1913, the City Council authorized the City Clerk to invite design submissions for an official seal. The previous seal depicted an outdated cityscape. The winning design was the work of architect Carleton Monroe Winslow (1876-1946). Winslow would go onto design multiple buildings for the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park, and the Bishop's School in La Jolla. The new seal was adopted by Resolution 17024 on April 15, 1914. Segment 6 - LA JOLLA SUCCESSION & HOT TAKE La Jollans Are Trying to Divorce San Diego (Again) Since the 1950s San Diegans living in the La Jolla neighborhood have been uncomfortable with their semi-separate status. What they’ve really wanted is to be independent. Every effort thus far has failed – will the latest one be any different? School District Closes PB Park Because of Dog Poop and Holes During the Thursday recording of the Voice of San Diego Podcast, San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava dropped some news: “The joint use field at Crown Point Junior Music Academy is going to be closed to the public because of the dogs and the dog owners that have beaten up the field so badly that it is now unplayable and dangerous for the students.” LaCava predicted more of San Diego Unified’s joint-use fields would close in the future. “I think the school district is finally going to say ‘Enough is enough. We cant risk the health of our students,’” LaCava said. Scott Lewis, CEO and editor in chief at Voice of San Diego. *The podcast may contain sensitive topics. Listener discretion is advised. This podcast is part 2 of a two part series. Operation Broken BladeIn August 2025, the U.S. Federal Government agencies including DOJ, FBI, and IRS joined with the Los Angeles Police Department to arrest 11 members of the Hoover Criminal Street Gang for sex trafficking children and adults along the Figueroa Corridor in south Los Angeles. The individuals are facing a 31 count indictment charges as well as Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Figueroa Corridor in Los Angeles has been a well-known area for street prostitution for many years with local officials turning a blind eye to the seriousness of the issue. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli is quoted as saying: “There are no meaningful consequences for their conduct under California State Law, so the federal government- aided by its local law enforcement partners- will step in to make sure these criminals face lengthy prison sentences. Today's operation is the first step in returning the Figueroa Corridor - long know as prostitution haven – back to its residents who have suffered for too long while criminals were allowed to run amok."Multiple articles regarding this incident state that Amaya Armstead, a female, (aka “Lady Duck”) is the case's lead defendant and the de factor leader of the group. She is accused of trafficking a 14-year-old girl. She is also accused of attacking and beating a young girl working for her, holding her down by the hair and kicking and kneeing her, while the young girl screamed she was pregnant. The young female victims were recruited by the Hoover Gang members through social media and personally. Many came from out of state and were seduced into believing they would live a life of luxury and be taken care of. Once they arrived they were drugged and forced to work long hours soliciting clients and performing commercial sext acts on the Figueroa Corridor. Million Kids applauds the efforts to take down these violent gang members who have been allowed to recruit and exploit young girls and operate in broad daylight. Until Federal Government Organizations joined with local law enforcement, it seemed few civic leaders would do what it takes to rescue the girls and prosecute hard core gang members who preyed on the most vulnerable. This seems to be a sex trafficking and money laundering case that deserves to be prosecuted under RICO.

In one of his final acts as president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador pushed through a contentious judicial reform. López Obrador celebrated the overhaul of the judiciary as a necessity and an important legacy of his government.A primary concern is that the reform weakens judicial independence, reducing checks and balances on the government. There are fears the election process could be open to political influence, reducing the judiciary's autonomy from government and strengthening the Morena party's dominance. There are also concerns that organized crime groups could interfere in the election of judges, threatening access to justice for victims and further inflating impunity levels. On The LatinNews Podcast this week, we speak to Julio Ríos-Figueroa, Associate Professor at the Department of Law at ITAM in Mexico City. Fresh from the whirlwind that was the IPMS National Convention in Hampton, Virginia, we're bursting with stories, impressions, and a renewed passion for scale modeling. What draws thousands of modelers to this annual pilgrimage? Beyond the spectacular contest entries and vendor treasures, it's the profound sense of community that keeps us counting down the days until next year. The vendor floor transformed into what can only be described as the world's largest traveling hobby shop. Squadron's presence was nothing short of spectacular – their massive booth complete with video games, sound system, and even their trailer parked inside the convention hall. We caught up with Brandon Lowe amid the constant stream of eager customers to discuss how they manage to outdo themselves each year. Our microphones captured fascinating conversations with niche vendors carving out unique spaces in the hobby. From 3D-printed Gundam accessories to exquisitely crafted diorama buildings, these entrepreneurs represent the evolving landscape of scale modeling. We also previewed the 2026 Fort Wayne convention with Mr. Figueroa, whose enthusiasm for themed awards highlighting underrepresented genres signals an exciting future for the hobby. The true heart of our experience, however, was the personal connections. We shared an Airbnb with modeling friends we met just three years ago, developing deep bonds through our shared passion. Dozens of listeners stopped by our table, transforming digital connections into meaningful face-to-face conversations that felt like reunions rather than introductions.Among the many discussions sparked during the convention was a thoughtful debate about competition in modeling. Does competing actually make modelers better without meaningful feedback? This question resonated particularly after connecting with Bob Bear, whose ornithopter model drew crowds, and observing on-site building sessions with modelers like Ben Pluth and Frank Blanton.Whether you're planning your first national convention visit or reminiscing about Hampton, join us for this celebration of what makes the modeling community extraordinary. That's a skill we don't practice enough.” — Andrew Jenzer (17:54)On repetition & efficiency “If you come out of a residency, you already know this stuff. The key is organizing it and verbalizing it quickly and efficiently, because there's a time component. If everyone had unlimited time, 99% would pass.” — Aaron (18:57)On facing the challenge “When I was nervous before the exam, I reminded myself: this is all stuff I've seen, I currently do, or have done. They just want to know I can do it safely. That mindset helped me calm down and let the answers flow.” — Aaron (36:18)On the value of board certification “The process makes you a better surgeon and provider. You start to connect things laterally, and it makes you incredibly safe for your patients. That's why it's worth it.” — Andrew Jenzer (41:20)On overcoming fear of failure “What's the worst that happens? You fail, you retake it. You're still an oral surgeon. Don't let fear stop you from going for it.” — Aaron (42:53)On teaching & mentorship “Follow your heart. If you're passionate about teaching, you can change the trajectory for residents and future surgeons. The world always needs more people willing to mentor.” — Andrew Jenzer (09:49)On patient safety & exam priorities “The exam isn't about knowing every obscure disease. It's about proving you can safely manage the common conditions — asthma, diabetes — the things you'll see every day.” — Andrew Jenzer (31:59)On commitment to the specialty “There are people before us who fought for us to be in hospitals, to do cancer and cosmetic surgery. Whether or not you do that, board certification preserves the scope of our specialty.” — Aaron (42:53)Questions:(03:45) “How did you guys think up the Oral Boards Review Course?”(04:50) “Was the fellowship one year or two? And what was it like for you personally?” (09:09) “Where are you guys practicing right now?”(15:43) “When should someone start preparing for the oral boards — is now too early or too late?”(23:37) “How should we structure group study sessions to best simulate the real exam?”(29:12) “Besides starting too late, what are the biggest mistakes people make preparing for this exam?”Now available on:- Dr. Gallagher's Podcast & YouTube Channel- Dose of Dental Podcast #168

In this episode of the Wharton Fintech podcast, Djavaneh sits down with Robbie Figueroa, co-founder and former COO of Maza, now Chief Business Officer at Flex following Maza and Flex's merger in late 2024. Robbie shares how growing up in Queens with immigrant parents from Brazil and Ecuador inspired him to tackle financial exclusion. From onboarding thousands of users to building ITIN application tools and automating entity formation, Maza met customers where they were, and grew alongside them. We discuss: How Maza identified and served Spanish-speaking solopreneurs Why distribution often beats product innovation in fintech The strategic fit between Maza and Flex and what's next Robbie also shares hard-won advice for early-stage founders and reflects on what it takes to build products that truly resonate with underserved users. Whether you're passionate about inclusive fintech, curious about startup pivots, or exploring founder-to-operator transitions, this episode is full of insight.
Expert on China-Iran relations William Figueroa joins PTO to talk about the relationship between China and Iran in the wake of the twelve day war between Iran and Israel. We chatted about why China's backing for Iran has been - and is likely to continue to be - relatively limited as China balances support for Iran with its other interest in West Asia. We also talked about the extent to which Xi Jinping and the Chinese leadership are happy to see the US bogged down in the Middle East, and we spoke about whether the scale of Israeli violence and expansionism may lead China to take a more overtly pro-Iran position.
