In this episode, meet the hugely successful author Simon James Green.Simon writes books for a YA audience that include vital representation for LGBTQ+ teens. This has led to his books being vilified and even banned. Simon talks about growing up gay in the UK in the shadow of Clause 28, a time when being true to oneself seemed nearly impossible. Simon recounts his personal journey of gradual self-revelation—a roadmap marked by subtle hints and professional expressions rather than a single defining moment. This powerful narrative underscores the importance of visible LGBTQ+ role models and challenges the often unspoken assumption of heteronormativity. We explore the myriad ways people navigate their identities, reminding us all that creating safe spaces for genuine self-expression is vital. We also discuss the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, delving into the resurgence of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments and the book bans that Simon faces as an author. MAUREEN JOHNSON'S first stand-alone mystery in many years, DEATH AT MORNING HOUSE, features Marlowe Wexler, a queer teen who unlike Stevie, is no detective. Heartbroken after a disastrous date, she finds herself in a summer job working at a grand but dilapidated house in the Thousand Islands region of northern New York at the Canadian border. It's there she stumbles upon two mysteries—one in the present day and one kept concealed since the 1930s. The novel begins with a fire, though it wasn't Marlowe's fault. But she's sure that Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist. With her house-sitting career up in flames, Marlowe ends up as a tour guide at Morning House, a mansion built by Dr. Phillip Ralston, where he once lived with his wife, six adopted children, and young son. Marlowe uncovers a series of clues that lead her to the dreadful realization that the grounds of Morning House are hiding a horrific secret.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Clara Kumagai is from Canada, Japan and Ireland. Her fiction and non-fiction for children and adults has been published in The Stinging Fly, The Irish Times, Banshee and The Kyoto Journal. Her debut YA novel, Catfish Rolling blends magical realism with Japanese myth in a story about grief, memory and time. Catfish Rolling was nominated for the YOTO Carnegie Award, a finalist for the Great Reads Award and shortlisted for the 2023 KPMG Children's Books Ireland Awards. She lives and writes in Ireland. Here is the blurb from Clara's book: There's a catfish under the islands of Japan and when it rolls the land rises and falls. Sora hates the catfish whose rolling caused an earthquake so powerful it cracked time itself. It destroyed her home and took her mother. Now Sora and her scientist father live close to the zones – the wild and abandoned places where time runs faster or slower than normal. Sora is sensitive to the shifts, and her father recruits her help in exploring these liminal spaces. But it's dangerous there – and as she strays further inside in search of her mother, she finds that time distorts, memories fracture and shadows, a glimmer of things not entirely human, linger. After Sora's father goes missing, she has no choice but to venture into uncharted spaces within the time zones to find him, her mother and perhaps even the catfish itself... https://www.instagram.com/clarakiyoko https://x.com/clarakiyoko Do you have a question for the Ask Us Anything segment? For Elio Solis, eighth grade fizzes with change--his body teeming with hormones. His feelings that flow like lava. His relationship withPops, who's always telling him to man up, the Solis way. And especially Camelia, his first girlfriend. But when betrayal and heartbreak send Elio spiraling toward revenge, he doesn't anticipate that a fight to prove his manhood and defend Camelia's honor will lead to dire consequences--or that Camelia's not looking for a savior. Crackling with comedy and unflinching candor, Ultraviolet digs deep into themes of consent, puberty, masculinity, and the emotional lives of boys, as it challenges stereotypes and offers another way to be in the world. It speaks directly to tweens' and young teens' lived experiences and will make them feel seen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Part 2 of Dennis's conversation with author Abdi Nazemian focuses on his latest book Only This Beautiful Moment, which recently won the Stonewall Award from Young Adult Literature. Abdi talks about drawing inspiration for the multigenerational story from his own family, how he was able to write scenes set in Iran despite having left there when he was a child and the longing he feels for the country and it's people. He also talks about what it feels like to have his two most recent books banned in many schools, how that affects his bottom line and how he learned the hard way not to engage with online trolls. Other topics include: being an Associate Producer on the film Call Me By Your Name, going back to school to get his MBA, the power of telling the truth instead of chasing what you think the market wants, why young people give him hope, the perils of social media and why he chose to set a scene in the men's room of the late great Silver Lake piano bar The Other Side. https://www.abdinazemian.com
Middle Grade and YA Author, Ali Terese shares her chaotically funny voice and community-oriented message, in FREE PERIOD, a cry of protest spotlighting both the undeserved shame young people feel around menstruation and the importance of friendship to all who experience it. Best friends Helen and Gracie are pranking their way through middle school when a stinky stunt lands them in the front office — again. Because nothing else has curbed their chaos, the principal orders the best friends to do the unthinkable: care about something, anything, to make them stop! So, they join the school's Community Action Club with plans to do as little as humanly possible. But when Helen is caught unprepared by an early period and bleeds through her pants — they were gold lamé! — the girls take over the club's campaign for maxi pads in bathrooms for all students who menstruate. In the name of period equity, the two friends use everything from over-the-top baked goods to glitter gluing for change. But nothing can prepare them for a clueless school board (ew), an annoying little sister (ugh), and crushes (oh my!). As Helen and Gracie find themselves closer to change and in deeper trouble than ever before, they must decide if they care enough to keep going . . . even if it costs them their friendship.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Happy Monday, my Friend! Welcome to Inside the Minds of Authors. The podcast that is dedicated to bringing you passionate authors with exciting books. We are excited you are joining us this evening. Today, we have debut Fantasy-YA Author, Mr. Jim Hepburn with us. He is chatting with us about his debut novel, Hunted by Fire. Like many young men in high school cursed with a dash of creativity, Jim found a love for writing, which everybody else thought was practically useless. Those folks urged him to get good at math and science instead, and so he worked at those, but he was never sure if he could hack them out at a university level. After he graduated from said university with an arts degree (where he had to read an awful lot), he wondered what other young people had gone through the same thing. It's always been his dream to inspire young men and women to pursue STEM projects. As he thinks the world could use as many helping hands as it can get and he thinks they are up to the challenge. To learn more about Jim, you can follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/authorjimhepburn/. Taryn Souders was born in Dallas, Texas and lived all over before settling down in Florida with her husband, David, and their three kids. She never started out planning to be a writer—she was a middle school math teacher for a couple years. But, being a voracious reader as a kid it gave her a love for words (and working with middle-schoolers gave her a sense of humor). It seemed like a good idea to combine the two (words and humor) and voila, a book was born. Sally Apokedak of the Apokedak Literary Agency represents her, and she couldn't ask for a more hardworking, insightful, integrity-filled agent. She has been blessed in her friendship with her and hope there are many more years (and books) to come. On Today's Show “If you write about the world as it is, there's too much of a danger of it just feeding into our assumption that everything that we live with is right and normal. Whereas if you start to say, well wait, let's project this into the future, or let's see where this comes from in the past, suddenly it opens up a whole new vista about what the present is doing." - M.T. Anderson M.T. Anderson's home in small-town Vermont is rumored to be haunted and he relishes the ghost stories told about it. Despite his analog lifestyle and lack of belief in the paranormal, he spends a lot of his time dreaming up sci-fi and fantasy adventures. Aside from just being fun, he considers the genre to hold a unique power in removing our own preconceived ideas and giving us fresh eyes to rethink our values and society. M.T. has demonstrated that ability in books like Feed, Landscape with Invisible Hand, and even his historical fiction duology Octavian Nothing. But to realize the power of the genres, he had to overcome the stigma that sci-fi and fantasy were inferior to traditional realism, or as he calls it, “New York realism.”In this episode, M.T. takes us on his own journey to embracing these genres as a writer, he talks about the growing relevance of their ability to offer societal critiques and representation in the increasingly hostile censorship movements, and he tells us about his new story where he uses a new perspective to learn about the world (his dog's).For his reading challenge, Hometown Lore, M.T. challenges readers to find the magic and weird stories hidden in their hometowns. Reading challenges from other author guests are always available at thereadingculturepod.com.This episode's Beanstack featured librarian is Iuyana Miller, the media specialist at Young Middle School in Atlanta. Along with being the 2022 Media Specialist of the Year for Atlanta Public Schools, she is also referred to as the “book fairy” by her elementary students. Iyuana shares a story of how she ventured beyond her comfort zone to meet her middle school kids where they are and engage them more than she ever imagined.ContentsChapter 1 - The Ghost and the Corgi (2:07)Chapter 2 - The Forest of Massachusetts (4:44)Chapter 3 - Moominland Midwinter (in winter) (9:46)Chapter 4 - Building on ruins (16:08)Chapter 5 - Aliens Make Everything Better (20:18)Chapter 6 - The truth behind the fantasy (26:37)Chapter 7 - The magical dog (31:22)Chapter 8 - Hometown Lore (34:17)Chapter 9 - Beanstack Featured Librarian (36:05)Links thereadingculturepod.com thereadingculturepod.com/mt-anderson M.T.
