In episode 28 of The One Fab Day Wedding Podcast, we're tackling an element of wedding planning that's pretty elusive - making your wedding unique. We're the first to admit that this is a confusing concept. After all, if you Google "unique wedding ideas", you're going to end up with a list of suggestions that are quite the opposite! But in reality, couples often find inspiration for their own personal touches by hearing about other weddings. Making your wedding unique is also about thinking outside the box, which is why we invited Aoife McElwain, the woman behind party phenomenon Singalong Social and author of the book Slow at Work, to share some cool details from her own wedding!Episode Breakdown: How to Make your Wedding UniqueWedding tip: Claire's nugget of wisdom this week is to make a plan for which friends, family members, and/or wedding party members should get buttonholes and corsages.Main topic: Today's main topic is making your wedding unique, but we don't mean exchanging vows during a bungee jump or hosting an underwater reception! We're talking about the sweet details and personal touches that make a wedding a true reflection of your personality. Think giving out little pots of your Granny's jam as wedding favours, or ditching the speeches for a table quiz! To kick off the conversation, we spoke to master party-thrower Aoife McElwain, who is best known as founder of Sing Along Social and author of the book Slow at Work. We hit on some really fun, unique wedding ideas over the course of this chat, so we hope you enjoy!Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “How do I put a disclaimer on the invite that basically says there's no pressure to come? How do I word this? Our wedding is on the Aran Islands so it may well require people taking Friday and Monday off work, as the wedding is Saturday, and the first ferry doesn't leave a lot of time to get ready. I absolutely want everyone to come, and friends in Australia have already booked flights home as soon as we set the date, but I want to acknowledge that it's far and awkward and that we won't be annoyed if people can't come.” Our advice this week includes a few handy suggestions for how to word the wedding invitations.Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Claire's recommending a spot of DIY to take your mind off the spreadsheets and supplier emails. Thanks for listening! This week on With Relish, Harry and Aoife explore one of life’s greatest conundrums: Is the internet the absolute best, or is it a load of crap? Well here is a plot spoiler… When it comes to food, it is probably somewhere in between, and that is what this episode is all about. Friend of the show, and online food loving veteran [Aoife McElwain]((https://www.instagram.com/aoifemcelwain/?hl=en)) joins us in studio to discuss the pros and cons of the world wide web, and how it has changed the way we eat, see and think about food. Aoife speaks about her early days as a blogger, the dangers of social media, how it is impacting what we see on our plate, and much much more. Check out Aoife’s fab 1st book; [Slow At Work]((https://www.gillbooks.ie/mind/mind/slow-at-work)) - How to work less, achieve more and regain your balance in an always-on world.
This week on Sparking Change, Aoife McElwain, food writer for The Irish Times and Totally Dublin, talks to Dil about her new book Slow to Work, and the importance of learning to slow down and manage your anxiety. Dill hears all about Aoife’s Aunt Linda – the name she gives her inner critic – and why naming that voice inside our head is a helpful way to externalise those thoughts. Slow at Work came about after Aoife reached the tipping point of burn out, just as her career was starting to take off, and she realised the importance of taking care of herself, in the short and long-term. Eventually, mental health issues crossed over into the physical, and Aoife realised first hand the importance of asking for help when we need it, and of taking some time out when we’ve taken on too much.
