On this episode of Overcoming Distractions, we are talking about burnout and what it can do to our body. When people are truly burned out, in most cases that causes trauma within the body. And that trauma can come in all types of forms. And when burnout is not addressed, it can take a person years in some cases to recover. Burnout is also becoming far more complex. For example, not all burnout is rooted in the workplace. You may have caregiving responsibilities which are adding to your chronic stress. So let's get into what burnout does to you as a human. The guest on this episode is Clinical Psychologist Dr. Claire Plumbly …author of….THE TRAUMA OF BURNOUT: How to Manage Your Nervous System Before It Manages You. First, Dr. Plumbly talks with Dave to clarify the differences between stress and burnout. The term burnout seems to be thrown around a little too loosely lately. Burnout is chronic stress unaddressed. Chronic stress leads to burnout. Dr. Plumbly talks about what chronic stress is doing to our bodies and our nervous system. Dr. Plumbly also discusses with Dave the various modes of burnout including the red mode and the green mode. Why most of us shut down when we are burned out and how to soothe the nervous system into green mode as she explains. She also explains the polyvagal theory of the nervous system. Understanding this can help us recover from burnout more effectively. Learn more about Dr. Clair Plumbly here as well as finding her book: https://www.drclaireplumbly.com/

Dr. Roger McFillin welcomes back Clinical Psychologist Dr. Riz Ahmad to explore a fundamental question: "Does nature make mistakes?" Challenging conventional psychiatric approaches, they argue that what we label as mental illness is actually be the body's natural signals for change. The psychologists contrast traditional mental health treatment with 'functional mental health', which focuses on root causes and the interconnection between physical and mental well-being rather than subjective labels and drugs. Through practical examples, they advocate for a paradigm shift that considers the whole person - from lifestyle and nutrition to relationships and spiritual health - ultimately calling for a healthcare system that heals rather than simply suppresses symptoms.Chapters00:00The Health Crisis: A Fragmented Narrative03:18 The Interconnectedness of Mind and Body06:45 Challenging Conventional Mental Health Paradigms10:35 The Dopamine Dilemma: Pleasure and Pain15:50 Nature's Signals: Understanding Symptoms20:59 The Role of Nature in Health25:55 The Complexity of Mental Health Treatment30:20 Exploring Consciousness Beyond the Material35:52 The Power of Intention and Interconnectedness41:07 Reconnecting with Our True Nature45:46 The Impact of Light on Mental Health48:44 Integrating Psychology and Functional Medicine52:26 The Flaws in Allopathic Medicine56:17 Redefining Mental Health and Optimal Well-Being01:00:11 Contrasting Standard and Functional Approaches to Teen Mental Health01:12:25 Understanding Trauma and Its Effects01:21:45 The Interconnectedness of Mind, Body, and Emotion RADICALLY GENUINE PODCASTDr. Roger McFillin / Radically Genuine WebsiteYouTube @RadicallyGenuineDr. Roger McFillin (@DrMcFillin) / XSubstack | Radically Genuine | Dr. Roger McFillinInstagram @radicallygenuineContact Radically GenuineConscious Clinician CollectivePLEASE SUPPORT OUR PARTNERS15% Off Pure Spectrum CBD (Code: RadicallyGenuine)10% off Lovetuner click here—-----------FREE DOWNLOAD! You may have heard or seen headlines lately with the concern over the impacts of social media on children and Anthony Albanese's recent announcement about age regulation and policy reform for when children will be legally able to access certain social media apps. These are all steps in the right direction, but what do we do in the meantime? And really, in the wise words of Clinical Psychologist – Dr. Charlotte Keating - without trying to implement some foundational and fundamental skills to your child's life, and your families – who is to say when they do turn 16 they will be ready to handle the world of online and social media? Further to this, Developmental Paediatrician Dr. Billy Garvey concurred that we don't just give our children a car license and the keys and say – drive! We start children with their Learners Permit and sit with them whilst they learn to drive, before they earn their license and the right to drive alone. This week's episode was a special one to Not Super. Woman, as we hosted our first community live event and had the privilege of both Dr. Charlotte Keating & Dr. Billy Garvey uniting to combine powers and give parents, their children and family units guidance on what are the steps we can take now, and rather than trying to find the silver bullet solution in the outside world. Let's start with looking within our own homes and the things we can control, as there is a lot we can't at the moment but we have time that can be spent well, whilst we wait . Do you hear yourself saying "I know what to do, I just need to do it"? - click here for your free audio book and journaling questions: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/book-free-resources—————————————————Meet Dr. Laurie Brucewww.drlauriebruce.comDr. Bruce States…“Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with a wide range of individuals and have sat alongside thousands of clients as they have shared their stories of pain, suffering and trauma. All of us, in some form or another, have received unhelpful messages that have impacted our sense of self. Some of us have received more toxic messages than others. Many of us falsely believe that our worth and value is based upon what we accomplish, how we look or what we can do for others. Psychotherapy is the process of developing a healing relationship with a safe “guide” who helps you to identify the origin of the toxic messages (when possible) and more importantly, “unlearn” those messages. True healing comes from recognizing that we are all born with inherent worth and that learning to love and care for ourselves unconditionally is possible and necessary. If you are going to engage in therapy or any type of coaching, it is essential that you understand that not all therapists and coaches are the same. Bad therapy or coaching can, at best, be unhelpful and at worst, traumatic. What makes a great therapist? Is there a type of therapy that is better for my issue? What are the red flags that I should be aware of as I start with a new therapist? Is there much of a difference between therapy and coaching? These are the kinds of questions that I hope to answer for you as you embark on your journey of healing.Dr. Bruce encourages you to check out her free resources, podcast and blog at www.drlauriebruce.com ——————————————-DO YOU WANT EXTRA SUPPORT & ACCOUNTABILILTY? Delanie Fischer is joined by psychotherapists, Katie McKenna and Helen Villiers, to discuss the impact of being raised by a narcissistic parent, and how it affects the entire family system. Katie and Helen provide everyday examples of what these dynamics can look like, why it can be extremely challenging for a survivor of this type of abuse to acknowledge their own experience (and why there's no such thing as an "empath"), and what steps can be taken towards healing and unlearning unhealthy behaviors. As we are closing the chapter on this year's summer season with the celebration of Labor Day here in the US, we thought it would be perfect to revisit our conversation with clinical psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy from episode 146. Besides being a psychologist, Dr. Becky is also a mother of three and founder of Good Inside, the expert-guided, community-powered platform equipping parents with a new way of seeing and solving challenges at home. With a new school year starting, there will be many transitions for our kids. And for us as parents! Dr. Becky's insight on parenting is so valuable as we go into this fall season. She opens up the conversation on a lot of topics that usually happen behind closed doors and has great advice on how to approach our children's changing behaviors when going through transitional times like the start of a new school year. Dr. Becky encourages us that no matter where we are in our motherhood and parenting journey, it's never too late to re-evaluate our behaviors and start to make a change.Follow Dr. Becky on InstagramDr. Becky's WebsiteDr. Becky's Online WorkshopsPurchase Dr. Becky's Book; Good InsideLet's connect!HERSELF PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastHERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

Send us a Text Message."Our traumas can either be our greatest problem or our greatest superpower," (Dr. Robyn Koslowitz). Which do you believe it is? Reflect on childhood trauma with Dr. Koslowitz, a nationally recognized clinical psychologist, who dives deep into her personal journey and professional insights to help us understand how trauma can be hidden beneath a child's seemingly calm exterior. Dr. Koslowitz emphasizes the necessity for creating supportive environments for children who have faced significant hardships. This episode offers valuable strategies to help traumatized students maintain a productive learning zone without crossing the threshold into overwhelm. Practical techniques such as allowing children to express their worries and teaching them how to compartmentalize their concerns are discussed. We also highlight the pivotal role of social and emotional learning (SEL) in aiding children to comprehend their stress responses and develop essential emotional regulation skills. Moreover, we provide guidance for teachers on recognizing when additional support is needed for students dealing with significant challenges. Dr. Koslowitz shares insights from her upcoming book, "Post-Traumatic Parenting," to illustrate how trauma can manifest in everyday parenting scenarios. By examining the concept of secret ACEs and their influence on parenting, she offers tools they need for success. Join us for an enlightening conversation that bridges understanding and actionable advice, aimed at fostering resilience in both children and parents.More: Post-Traumatic Parenting podcast Instagram: drkoslowtizpsychologySupport the Show. Please subscribe and share this podcast with a friend to spread the good!If you find value to this podcast, consider becoming a supporter with a $3 subscription.
