For July's episode we discuss our favourite songs of 1983, so we've got lots of goth, synthpop, metal titans, electro, industrial, and beautiful ambient soundscapes. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Accept, Aztec Camera, Bananarama, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, David Bowie, Dio, Brian Eno, The Fall, Freur, Gene Loves Jezebel, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Corey Hart, Heaven 17, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Cyndi Lauper, Metallica, Merzbow, Ministry, The Pointer Sisters, R.E.M., Specimen, Suicidal Tendencies, Swans, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The The, U2, and Tom WaitsFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/534g5ENDcVYaw5oSgT7dvu?si=f7eae0414cdc47e5Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com
On the Saturday August 1, 2026 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we'll meet award-winning documentary filmmaker, director, producer, and editor Alison Elwood. Her standout music documentaries include the Emmy-nominated "Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time," the Critics' Choice Award-winning "The Go-Go's," "Let the Canary Sing" about Cyndi Lauper, and the acclaimed History of the Eagles. Her latest film is "Boy George & Culture Club." Then, we'll meet writer, screenwriter, and copywriter Edward Chisholm. His new book, “Murder in Paris '68,” is a work of narrative non-fiction that dives into the unsolved murder of Stevan Markovic, the Serbian bodyguard and associate of French film star Alain Delon. It was an immense scandal at the time, and Edward's book captures the whole story.

From the moment we saw the video for "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" on MTV, we can say there was no one who looked, dressed, or sounded like Boy George. There was also the music, which touched on Pop, Soul, and Reggae. Even through all the mania that surrounded the band, we never quite understood who they were and where they came from, until now. Director Alison Ellwood previously tackled the official story on the Eagles, Cyndi Lauper, and The Go-Go's. She now takes on Boy George and Culture Club, and there is a lot to unpack as she steps into our virtual studio to reveal all she learned in this new documentary, currently streaming everywhere. DCU Infighting on Supergirl? A Sleepy July Fourth Box Office and Sony Deals a Deadly Blow to Physical Media. All that and more coming up right after this.Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Five Star Review: Facebook Group comment from Oliver Griffin: I've listened to every episode since the beginning, one of my absolute favourite podcasts. Disagreements Over SupergirlSome questions of the failure of Supergirl at the box office may be getting answered, as The Hollywood Reporter learned last week about creative disputes between the studio and director Craig Gillespie with one insider saying “they were not creatively aligned.” While other insiders dispute this claim, the news does nothing to help the DCU's second feature film's outing. Other reports say the filmmakers knew last fall that the movie wasn't hitting its marks yet and James Gunn brought writer Jeremy Slater in to work on some reshoots. Slater wrote The Authority for DC under Gunn, a film that is now no longer being made. According to The Hollywood Reporter, music was one of the main issues of friction - especially the use of the cover of The Middle; apparently Gunn wanted Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Ultimately, two cuts of the film were tested - one by the studio and one by Gillespie - and the studio's film is what was released. There's a lot of nuance and likely unknown information, but given what we do know - is the DCU ship steering the right course right now?JayBox Office Slowdown While heavy hitters Toy Story 5, Michael, Obsession, and The Backrooms, are still steady at the box office, new releases seem to be struggling to stay even on par with predictions. Illumination's Minions & Monsters all but failed in the states, garnering only $37 million but looking ok with oversea ticket sales. Supergirl has barely crossed the $100 million mark. Both films look to struggle even more with Disney's live-action Moana getting ready to premiere, as well as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, hotly followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Is the Fourth of July weekend too hot for movies in cool theaters to do well?HayleyPhysical Media MeltdownThe downfall of physical media continues with an announcement from Sony: in January 2028 game disc production for all newly-released PlayStation console games will be discontinued. While this certainly follows a trend we've been seeing over the last few years in regards to physical media, there's an expected backlash that comes with this major statement. Though Sony points to consumer preferences with facts as the cause for this decision, there's certainly a population still desiring the physical versions of games. The pros and cons also include smaller developers having more opportunity, but data space being sacrificed. For the gamers on our panel, what's your reaction to this news?JayComing up in the Lightning Round: Kachow! Obsession breakout star Inde Navarette has reportedly met with Jake Schrier, who directed Thunderbolts*, and was quoted as saying that if she was asked to do a Marvel movie, she would.Law and Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay will host the 2026 Emmys on September 14th. We are still in the midst of our summer holiday. And oh, what a sweltering summer it is turning out to be! Because of this, rather than producing a brand-new episode today, I’m bringing you an episode from nearly six years ago which celebrated a landmark birthday of mine, which is a playlist of a few of my favorite pop divas, my association with some of whom stretches all the way back to my childhood. But what a motley assortment it is! Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Barbara Cook, Eartha Kitt, Juliette Gréco, ABBA, Barbra Streisand, Bonnie Raitt, Cyndi Lauper, Billie Holiday, Eurythmics, Jackie DeShannon, Dolly Parton, Laura Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Yma Sumac, the recently departed Nicole Croisille, Linda Ronstadt, Freda Payne, Joey Heatherton, Dinah Washington, Dalida, Aretha, and of course my beloved Dusty. This is a playlist worthy of any diva-loving late-middle aged homosexual that any lover of occasionally good music and usually fantastic singing can enjoy. The episode begins with a memorial tribute to the late Erie Mills. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
This week on Wiser Than Me, Julia sits down with 73-year-old style and music legend Cyndi Lauper. The pair talk premonitions, pop hits, and why she thinks she owes Steven Spielberg a decades-overdue apology note. From singing in the shower as a kid to writing the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, Cyndi talks about her creative chaos, and standing up to anyone who tells her to “just sing.” She opens up about marriage, activism, and why flowers apparently wave back when you're famous. WWE is holding its Night of Champions show next weekend and I've got PREDICTIONS, including for the King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring finals, thoughts on what happened on Smackdown and why Sami Zayn should win the WWE championship in Riyadh. But it was also a WILD WEEK FOR TNA and I'm covering more TNA news in this one episode than I've ever done in the 19 years of this podcast... with thoughts on Tessa Blanchard LEAVING TNA, Tommy Dreamer "mutually" parting ways with the company (sure thing), Sami Callihan making some noise on his way out after getting the axe and questions about exactly how much money TNA is getting out of this AMC deal as talent continues to flee.On the AEW side, Jim Ross is back in the hospital again, FTR is taking time away from the ring and thoughts on Maya World's SHOCKING WIN over Athena in the Owen Hart tournament and where things may be headed there with Mercedes Mone in the finals.Plus, the death of Duke Doherty, thoughts on Cyndi Lauper getting her own WWE action figure and what that means for the Hall of Fame, could a Razor Ramon World title run have worked and my review for the new TOY STORY 5 movie.Support my sponsors this week by using the links below!EXPRESSVPN ▶ Get an extra FOUR MONTHS FREE of the #1 trusted VPN at http://www.expressvpn.com/solomonsterZOCDOC ▶ Visit http://www.zocdoc.com/solomonster to find and INSTANTLY book a doctor you love today!WIX HARMONY ▶ The NEW WAY to create websites! Consider this Fat Friday! - we're doing the legendary Mardi Gras tune "Iko Iko" this week but first we have to reverse the parade back to the 50s to hear the source, James 'Sugar Boy' Crawford & His Cane Cutters and "Jockomo." It's got a real carnival feel and Sugar Boy blows out the mic! The spy boys then scout rival krewe The Dixie Cups version, "Iko Iko," from 1965. We dispute the lore that the song was totally spontaneous, but that doesn't stop us from loving the rhythm and the subdued vocals. The song is always a sure-fire hit, and so we discuss high-charting renditions by Natasha England and then Belle Stars, and there's also some album filler from Cyndi Lauper! IKO!
