When Drinking Less Feels Hard: Alcohol Helps Me Relieve Stress

The Alcohol Minimalist Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 33:48

In this episode of the Alcohol Minimalist podcast, Molly kicks off the series When Drinking Less Feels Hard, inspired by real responses from the Alcohol Minimalist community about the hardest parts of changing drinking habits.Today's episode focuses on one of the five Alcohol Core Beliefs: Alcohol Helps Me Relieve Stress.Alcohol can feel like relief in the moment because it creates a short-term shift in the brain and body. But that does not mean it is actually reducing stress. Molly explains how alcohol can disrupt sleep, increase next-day anxiety, and keep the brain stuck in the loop of believing alcohol is necessary for relaxation. This episode helps you look at stress drinking with curiosity instead of shame, and offers a practical way to challenge the belief that alcohol is the best or only way to unwind. In This Episode Why alcohol feels calming at first  The difference between a state change and real stress relief  How alcohol can affect sleep, anxiety, and next-day resilience  Why the brain learns to associate alcohol with relief  How to use See, Soothe, Separate, and Shift to challenge the urge to drink Key TakeawayWanting relief is human. But alcohol often borrows calm from tomorrow instead of creating real relief today.Listener PracticeBefore drinking in response to stress, pause and complete this sentence:“I need a drink because…”Then use the Alcohol Core Beliefs process:See: I'm having the thought that alcohol will relieve this stress. Soothe: Of course my brain is offering this; I've practiced this pattern. Separate: The fact is I'm stressed. The story is that alcohol is required. Shift: I can create real relief before I decide what to drink.Choose one action that actually addresses the need underneath the urge.Resources Mentioned:Alcohol Core Beliefs MindmapSee, Soothe, Separate, ShiftWhen Drinking Less Feels Hard seriesLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

In this Think Thursday episode, Molly revisits the past episode on why habits can feel unbreakable—and why the real issue is often not the behavior itself, but the story we keep repeating about it.Your brain is not broken. It is designed to recognize patterns, conserve energy, and repeat what feels familiar. But when familiar patterns are fueled by negative self-talk, change can feel harder than it needs to be.Molly explains how the negativity bias keeps us focused on what went wrong and shares a simple framework to help interrupt old thought patterns: See, Soothe, Separate, and Shift. What You'll Learn Why your brain defaults to familiar habits.  How negative self-talk keeps old patterns alive.  Why one mistake can feel bigger than five wins.  How to separate facts from stories.  How to practice a next-best thought that supports change. Key TakeawayYour habit is not unbreakable. It is learned. And if your brain can learn one pattern, it can learn another. Changing your relationship with alcohol starts with changing the story you tell yourself about what is possible.Mentioned in This EpisodeThink Thursday Negativity bias  Negative self-talk  Habit change Alcohol Minimalist Facebook GroupMaking Peace with AlcoholUntil next time, choose peace. ★ Support this podcast ★

We often hear people say “step into success,” but what if the real key is learning how to “stress less into success”?  We welcome back Dat Tran, stress resiliency coach and founder of Dat Purpose LLC, for a conversation centered on sustainable high performance and the neuroscience behind resilience. Dat challenges the traditional narrative around stress by reframing it as something we do not eliminate, but something we can train ourselves to navigate more effectively. Unmanaged stress imposes hidden costs on leadership, relationships, decision-making, and long-term performance. Dat also introduces his five resiliency skills: Stress Magic, Strengthening, Stretch, Soothe, and Release. Listen for practical insight into how resilient leaders train themselves to stay present under pressure, develop stronger self-awareness, and intentionally do hard things until those hard things become easier Highlights include:  Why stress resiliency—not stress avoidance—is the future of sustainable leadership. Doubt is often the biggest stress trigger for high performers. Emotional brain vs. executive brain: how leaders can retrain their response to pressure Dat's evidence-based approach to building resilience and The 5 Skills of Stress Resiliency. “Do hard things until hard things feel easy.” Why the strongest leaders remain present even when life gets difficult. Most people treat emotional eating as a discipline problem. It isn't. It's a nervous system that learned to do what it was never properly taught. This episode breaks down why food became your go-to when pressure builds, why that makes complete sense, and what the pattern has actually been pointing toward all along. What we cover* Why food works so reliably when the pressure builds, and why that's the first thing to understand, not the first thing to fix* The nervous system's actual job, why it needs a route back to calm when the day presses on you, and how it learned to find one* Co-regulation: what it is, why most of us over 40 never got it, and what that missing education created in its place* The Substitute Teacher: how food stepped in when the real lesson was absent, why it held the room, and why the problem was never the substitute* Why the inner verdict, “I'm just weak when it comes to food,” is built on a premise that was never examined, only collected as evidence* What changes when the kitchen moment becomes a signal instead of a verdict, and what the nervous system has been asking for all alongReady to learn what your nervous system actually needs? The real curriculum is inside The Weight Loss Mindset Membership. How to Soothe Sunday Scaries and Start Your Week Right

Positively Living

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2026 18:29 Transcription Available

Text your thoughts and questions! If Sundays elicit a sense of dread or a creeping feeling of anxiety that builds as the day progresses, you are experiencing a very real psychological phenomenon known as the Sunday scaries. This anticipatory anxiety occurs when your brain projects into the unknown of the week ahead and treats that uncertainty like an immediate threat. Data shows you are genuinely not alone—recent studies from early 2026 reveal that a massive 88% of Americans experience this weekly dread. The good news is that you cannot simply logic your nervous system into relaxing, but you can take action. Taking small, deliberate steps interrupts the mental spiral, grounds your brain in the present, and allows you to reclaim your weekend. This week, episode 315 of the Positively Living® Podcast maps out a calm, intentional, and minimal weekly reset strategy that eases the transition back into your routine on your own terms.Key TakeawaysUnderstand Anticipatory Anxiety: Sunday dread is a physical threat response triggered by your brain projecting into an uncertain weekly schedule.Interrupt the Spiral: Small, intentional actions shift your brain away from worst-case future scenarios and ground you in the present.Establish a Calm Space: Clear your immediate environment before you plan, as visual clutter leads directly to cluttered thinking.Unplug for Clear Focus: Turn off all phone notifications for just five to ten minutes to allow your nervous system to focus without distraction.Empty Your Mental Storage: Complete a pen-and-paper mind sweep to capture pending tasks, free up cognitive capacity, and stop mental rumination.Practice Minimum Effective Planning: Avoid over-planning every hour, which creates rigidity and guarantees frustration when real life disrupts your schedule.Build a Skeleton Plan: Layout core commitments and just one key priority per day instead of an exhaustive, rigid task list.Focus on Monday Only: When completely depleted, plan only for the next day's non-negotiables and map out the rest of the week on Monday morning.Choose Your Best Window: Reset when your natural energy peaks, whether that means a quiet Sunday morning, Saturday afternoon, or Friday before closing down.Thank you for listening! Many infants respond well to white noise, quickly calming down when they hear the soothing sound. When a baby is fussy, crying, suffering from colic or not sleeping well, play this calming white noise and watch them quickly settle down. Bring peace to your infant and to your household with this relaxing baby sleep sound.Baby white noise is an effective way to soothe a crying infant and lull your newborn to sleep. White noise resembles sounds the baby heard in the womb, which has a calming effect. It also masks other distracting noises so that your baby can fall asleep and remain sleeping. While playing white noise for babies, it's important to keep tabs on the volume, because any white noise machine, smartphone, or computer can put out levels that are too loud for your child. It's recommended to play the sound at least a few feet from where your infant is sleeping and to keep the volume no louder than the sound of a soft shower.Parents can download an app to turn their smartphone into a sound level meter. One good, free, option is the sound level meter app created by the U.S. National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) available on the app store as the NIOSH SLM app.Soothe your crying baby and enjoy a moment of calm!At Relaxing White Noise, our goal is to help you sleep well. This episode is eight hours long with no advertisements in the middle, so you can use it as a sleeping sound throughout the night. Listening to our white noise sounds via the podcast gives you the freedom to lock your phone at night, keeping your bedroom dark as you fall asleep. Good morning! Let's fill your cup back up today. Today is Day 5 of our 7-Day Cortisol Reset, and we are focusing on Nurture. We're moving into the Solar Plexus to melt away the physical tension we carry in our gut when life gets too heavy. In This Episode: The City of Jewels: Understanding the power and the vulnerability of your third chakra. The Gut-Brain Connection: Why cortisol "hits" our stomach first and how to soothe the nerves there. The Golden Bath: A guided somatic practice to nurture your "doing" center back to health. A Little Message for Your Heart: My dear friend, I see how hard you've been working. I see the way you carry the 'to-do' lists, the expectations, and the dreams of so many people in that space right behind your naval. You have been so strong for so long. But today, I want to remind you that you don't have to 'earn' your right to be nurtured. You are not a machine that only deserves fuel when it's running. You are a living, breathing soul who deserves to feel warm, full, and cared for just because you exist. Let the golden light do the work today. Let yourself be the one who is held. You've nurtured the world—now, let the world nurture you. You are enough, even when you are doing absolutely nothing. This is day 5 of a 7-day meditation series, "The 7-Day Cortisol Reset," episodes 3500-3506. THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE -  THE 20-MINUTE TECH-GAP The Weekly Challenge: Wait exactly 20 minutes after waking up before you touch any digital device. Getting babies to sleep is big business, and a major source of stress for parents. There are many theories and methods: rock them, sing, let them cry it out. But now science has come to the rescue and we can finally put this question to bed. Hopefully.  According to a study published in September 2022 in Current Biology, “approximately 20%–30% of infants cry excessively and exhibit sleep difficulties for no apparent reason” which of course can be exhausting for most people but can become more serious in some cases. As the study points out, it causes “parental stress and even triggering impulsive child maltreatment in a small number of cases.” So finding a way to sooth babies is important. What did the scientists discover? How did they come to these conclusions? So how do you get the baby to sleep? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Chuck's Commentary - America Could Enter A “Reform Era” Post-Trump + Top 5 Most Absurd Awards Created To Soothe Trump's Ego

The Chuck ToddCast: Meet the Press

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 64:33 Transcription Available

Chuck Todd explores whether the United States is on the verge of a new reform era — and argues that the signs are more promising than you might think. Starting with a constitutional amendment now circulating in Congress to nullify presidential pardons, backed by both a Maryland Democrat and Republican Don Bacon to give it bipartisan credibility, Todd makes the case that the pardon power has been so thoroughly abused — from Biden's preemptive pardons giving Trump political cover, to Trump intermediaries allegedly being paid for sold pardons — that the kind of structural corruption requiring structural repair is now undeniable. He puts this moment in historical context, drawing parallels to the reform cascades that produced the 16th Amendment (born from rampant income inequality), the 17th Amendment (born from a corruption scandal involving the sale of Senate seats), and the 19th Amendment (born when democracy itself felt like it was slipping away), while cautioning that not every reform era gets it right — the 18th Amendment and Prohibition being a case study in moral panic and overcorrection. His broader argument is that reform eras tend to cascade once they begin, that the tools to demand a better democratic structure already exist, and that if Congress shifts from debating revenge to debating reforms, that alone represents meaningful progress. Finally, Chuck gives his reaction the Munich Security Conference, offers up his ToddCast Top 5 “Most Absurd Awards Created To Soothe Trump’s Ego” and answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. Sometimes when nothing else helps, playing baby white noise can be an effective tool to quickly calm a crying, colicky infant. When a baby is fussy, suffering from colic or not sleeping well, play this soothing white noise and watch them quickly settle down. Bring peace to your infant and to your household with this relaxing baby sleep sound. While playing white noise for babies, it's important to keep tabs on the volume, because any white noise machine, smartphone, or computer can put out levels that are too loud for your child. It's recommended to play the sound at least a few feet from where your infant is sleeping and to keep the volume no louder than the sound of a soft shower. Parents can download an app to turn their smartphone into a sound level meter. One good, free, option is the sound level meter app created by the U.S. National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) available on the app store as the NIOSH SLM app. This episode was originally published in 2021. Sign Up for Mostly Dry January--The DailyIn this episode of the Alcohol Minimalist podcast, Molly tackles a common end-of-year mindset trap: the “sin and repent” cycle. It's the idea that December is for overindulgence and January is for repentance—a pattern that often reinforces all-or-nothing thinking and keeps us stuck in old drinking habits.Through personal reflections and practical coaching, Molly unpacks the power of permission-giving thoughts like “It's the holidays, I deserve this” or “I'll get back on track in January.” These seemingly harmless ideas delay change, undermine self-trust, and reinforce avoidance patterns. But there's a better way—and it starts by practicing mindful thought shifts right now, not later. With her See, Soothe, Separate, Shift method and a science-backed approach to building new thought habits, Molly shows listeners how to move through the holiday season with more clarity, agency, and peace. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why the “I'll be good in January” mindset is not harmless—and how it reinforces habits you're trying to breakWhat permission-giving thoughts sound like and why they feel so rationalHow delaying behavior change until January trains your brain to avoid discomfortThe difference between self-compassion and excuse-makingHow to use the See, Soothe, Separate, Shift framework to rewire your thinking in real timeKey Quote“It's not a willpower problem—it's a pattern problem. You can begin noticing and shifting thoughts right now—before the year ends.Ask yourself:Is this a self-compassionate thought?Or is it a permission-giving excuse? What's one small choice I can make today that aligns with who I'm becoming?Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week.
