Doop! The Union project is fully mature, and they took years of frustrations out on Toronto FC. Andrew, David, Doyle and Calen give Jim Curtin and Philadelphia their due and wonder whether a double is in the cards. A double is possible because the Supporters’ Shield is back, as the decision not to award the trophy in 2020 was reversed by the Supporters’ Shield Foundation. Doyle is, of course, a Shield truther, and he says this proves the trophy means more than it ever has before. Calen, meanwhile, is back on the Carlos Vela hype train, even if LAFC’s star still looks a half step slow. Alicia Rodriguez (SBNation) also drops by to drop some Chicharito and Guillermo Barros Schelotto takes and explain what’s going on in San Jose and Sacramento. 8:00 – Huge win for the Union! What’s it mean, and now what?   25:07 – LAFC gets Carlos Vela back and they’re back in the MLS Cup convo   37:02 – INTERVIEW: Alicia Rodriguez on LAFC, Chicharito, Guillermo Barros Schelotto   58:16 – Playoff races heat up! So who are we watching down the stretch?   1:03:04 – Nagbe? Zelarayan? Maxi? Vela? What’s the biggest return from injury?   1:07:54 – 22U22 and Aron Johannsson in the mailbag!

We take a closer look at the league that has become the destination of choice for young American players by interviewing people who regularly talk or write about Werder Bremen, Hannover 96, Schalke and Dortmund. Josh Sargent, Bobby Wood, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic are the main events in this episode, but each guest gave a good sense of each club’s overall situation and addressed the rising population of Americans in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga academies. Greg and I had planned to talk about Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and Gladbach to talk about Timmy Chandler, John Brooks and Fabian Johnson, but we ran out of time, as you’ll see. 1:25 Patrick Davey from the podcast Radio Free Weser, on Josh Sargent, the cocoon of development that’s being built around him including Claudio Pizarro's mentorship, Sargent's prospects for first-team minutes, the bullish case for Werder Bremen this season and some quick thoughts on Aron Johannsson and Isaiah Young. Podcast: https://rfwpod.podbean.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/RFWPod 41:15 Ansgar Loecke from the HannoverliebtMSR (German-language) podcast, on the modest expectations for Bobby Wood at Hannover, a club that’s no stranger to Americans and one that should be a good place for Wood to get his groove back. We also briefly discuss Hannover’s efforts to revamp the academy, and Chris Gloster’s situation. Podcast: https://meinsportradio.de/2018/05/09/hannoverliebt-klassenerhalt/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ansgar_L 1:15:00 Jack Mangan from the FC Schalke 04 Podcast, on a big year for Weston McKennie that’s full of opportunity, as well as Haji Wright, Nick Taitague, Zyen Jones and even Chris Richards at Bayern. Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/fc-scahlke-04-podcast/id1263701061 Twitter: https://twitter.com/JMMangan 2:02:10 Lars Pollman from the Yellow Wall Podcast, on an ultimately disappointing 2017/18 for Christian Pulisic and for Dortmund, the still open possibility of a transfer, and the high hopes for the young American winger in the season upcoming. Lars also discusses Lucien Favre as a manager, projects what would be a successful statistical season for Pulisic, and we venture into Lars’s NFL fandom. Monday means a rotating cast, with Ben ‘The Researcher’ Baer up first to help Andrew and David break down a wild, goal-heavy Week 22! Andrea Pirlo started for the first time and Frank Lampard made his debut off the bench, but NYCFC still lost. What gives? Then D.C. United and RSL combined for 10 goals in a match that left Ben Olsen hoarse before Orlando City dropped a nickel on Columbus. Speaking of the Lions, history maker Cyle Larin calls in to talk Kaka, Canada and Rookie of the Year honors. Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about the rest of the weekend. Nick Rosano jumps in to break down THAT red card on Jozy Altidore, New York’s brotherly love and a comparison between the airport mobs that greeted Didier Drogba and Giovani Dos Santos on arrival. Oh, and CONCACAF Champions League starts on Tuesday. Which MLS team is best equipped to make a run? In the mailbag, Aron Johannsson’s flirtation with Real Salt Lake starts the conversation before another tough weekend for US national team centerbacks comes to the fore. Plus, which MLS players would you put in your foot gold twosome?

World Cup fever is raging right now in the US and Japan, and Andrew, Simon, and David are on board. They open up with Emma Hayes’ reaction to the semifinals, and the full breakdown of the final matchup to come. Fortunately, as if there wasn’t enough soccer on the radar, the US Open Cup is rolling along as well. Get the lowdown on the Round of 16 action as well as the quarterfinals. In the second segment, get your MLS fill: all the weekend’s games, what to watch for, and who needs it most. Next up, a fun and informative conversation with ETR's guru of youth development, Tampa Bay Rowdies head coach Thomas Rongen. Rongen brought Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Freddy Adu through the U-20s, and reminisces about a player who could have outshone them all in Charles Renken. He also discusses Jordan Morris, the future of the Rowdies, and the next step for development in the US and Canada. In the mailbag, it’s all USMNT. What message did Jurgen Klinsmann send Clint Dempsey by giving Bradley the armband? Plus, who is Aron Johannsson’s MLS comparable?
