We cover several interesting happenings around town this week on the Access Louisville podcast — including a nearly $36 million development that's under way in the Portland neighborhood. LBF Senior Reporter Joel Stinnett was on hand earlier this week for the ground breaking of Liminal, located at 1416-1426 Lytle Street.  Antecedent Development and its partners are working on the project, which aims to transform historic warehouses into 138 apartments and 20,000 square feet of commercial space. The development joins other major investments in Portland, pushing total revitalization efforts beyond $100 million. We discuss the distinctive look and feel of the project and its potential impact on the neighborhood. After that we talk about plans from Louisville-based Texas Roadhouse Inc. to replace its very first Louisville store, near Outer Loop, with an updated and more modern space nearby.Reporter Olivia Estright is on the show as well to talk about a couple stories that she has been working on this week, including the closure of two restaurants in New Albany, Indiana. The owner was trying out a plan for dual concepts in a space on State Street, but it didn't take, she explains. Estright also discusses the relocation of Mahonia, a plant shop that's moved from NuLu to St. Matthews. A big road construction project in NuLu was one of the reasons for the moves, she explained. After a break, Reporter Stephen P. Schmidt jumps on to chat about the United Soccer League, of which Louisville City FC is a part. As we've reported before the USL is launching a new top tier Division I, which will have a system of relegation and promotion. Soccer fans in the US have bemoaned the lack of such a system in Major League Soccer, so the new league is drawing plenty of interest. Schmidt recently penned a story in which he offers his take on what the league will look like when it launches in 2028. And that story is getting some traction with soccer fans nationally. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. 2025 STL City SC Season Review: The Honeymoon is Over!!!

Mecca of Banter

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2025 66:17

Introduction: As the dust settles on the tumultuous 2025 season for St. Louis City SC, fans and analysts alike find themselves reflecting on a year filled with disappointment and missed opportunities. From high expectations to a disheartening finish, this season review delves into the highs and lows that defined the team's performance, offering insights into what went wrong and what lies ahead.Main Content:1. The Season Overview: The 2025 season for St. Louis City SC was marked by a sense of hopelessness. As the hosts of the Mecca of Banter podcast discussed, the vibe can be summed up in two words: "hopelessly lost." With a lack of direction from the management and an underwhelming roster, fans were left wondering how the team could recover. The season concluded with a disappointing record of eight wins, eight draws, and 18 losses, placing the team 13th in the Western Conference.2. Key Issues: The podcast highlighted several critical issues that contributed to the team's struggles. One major point was the leadership and direction—or lack thereof—provided by the coaching staff. The team transitioned from an interim manager to hiring Olaf Melberg, who was expected to bring defensive stability. However, the results did not match expectations, with the team leaking goals and lacking a cohesive identity. The hosts lamented the team's failure to build on the momentum from the previous season and expressed frustration with the management's decisions.3. Player Performance: Despite the overall disappointing season, there were a few bright spots. Marcel Hartle emerged as a key player, stepping up in the absence of others and proving his worth on the field. He not only displayed leadership qualities but also scored some impressive goals, raising hopes for his future contributions. Additionally, the performance of goalkeeper Berkey was noted, as he continued to be a reliable presence for the team.4. The Honeymoon Phase is Over: The hosts noted that the initial excitement and optimism surrounding St. Louis City SC have faded, with the metaphorical "honeymoon phase" coming to an abrupt end. Fans who once felt invincible after a promising first season now face the reality of a struggling team. The discussion pointed to the need for a renewed focus on building a competitive squad that can reclaim the enthusiasm of the fan base.5. Looking Ahead: As the podcast concluded, the hosts expressed cautious hope for the future. They emphasized the importance of learning from the mistakes of the 2025 season and rebuilding for the upcoming year. The need for a solid strategy in player acquisition and management was underscored, as the team must not only improve its roster but also restore the confidence of its supporters. Conclusion: The 2025 season for St. Louis City SC serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in professional sports. With a combination of poor management decisions, underwhelming player performances, and a loss of identity, the team found itself in a difficult position. However, with a clear plan and the right adjustments, there is still hope for a brighter future. Fans will be watching closely as the organization looks to rebuild and reclaim its place in the competitive landscape of Major League Soccer. Key Takeaways:- The 2025 season was marked by disappointment and a lack of direction.- Key players like Marcel Hartle showed promise despite overall team struggles.- The honeymoon phase for fans is over, highlighting the need for change.- A clear strategy for the future will be essential for rebuilding the team's competitive edge.Tags for SEO: St. Louis City SC, MLS, 2025 season review, soccer analysis, team performance, sports management, Major League Soccer, St. Louis sports, soccer podcast, fan engagement.

We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and World Cup chat and interviews. The long wait is almost over for the big MLS Western Conference semi-final between the Whitecaps and LAFC. We set the scene for the match-up and hear thoughts from Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen, Whitecaps centre-back Tristan Blackmon, MLS studio analyst Dax McCarty, and MLS match analyst Maurice Edu about the game and the playoff rivalry. We also sit down for a chat with a man who's been through these games for the last two years and is back fit and ready to go in this one, Whitecaps striker Brian White. Our feature interview this episode is with Whitecaps club reporter Sarita Patel. We chat with Sarita about her broadcasting journey so far, her time in Vancouver, and the wild year that 2025 has been, with hopefully more to come! In a monumental week for the league, we look at the MLS schedule change, the move to a fall to spring season, and the changes to MLS' Apple TV deal. Plus we talk World Cup 2026 qualifiers, more anger-inducing ticket releases, and Canada crashing out of the U17 World Cup in an epic, but ugly, penalty shootout. Music-wise, Camper van Beethoven continue their residency as our Album of the Month, we've two Britpop songs from Powder and Soda, and a Siberian post punk techno band feature in Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.27: Intro - Rise win NSL championship, SFU women threepeat 11.35: MLS schedule change official and full of benefits 36.15: MLS and Apple TV deal tweak better for all concerned 44.25: Whitecaps vs LAFC preview with Sorensen and Blackmon 64.05: Brian White interview 73.35: MLS analysts Dax McCarty and Maurice Edu talk Whitecaps vs LAFC 84.50: More Whitecaps vs LAFC chat 100.00: Interview with Whitecaps club reporter Sarita Patel 137.10: Exciting weekend of World Cup qualifiers 149.55: The 2026 World Cup ticket farce seemingly getting worse 157.37: Canada crash out of U17 World Cup in ugly shootout loss 167.00: Wavelength - Kapitalifting 38 - War Is Not A Football Match

For the Glory KC is back with the 153rd episode of the show! Before you do anything else, can you take our Sporting KC and MLS fan survey? Thanks! The main event, for the second straight week, are the KC Current who shook up the soccer world. First, Vlatko Andonovski is out as the coach but is promoted? It felt weird to us as well. Sheena and I talk through the sudden change and shed some light on the move and all the other front office changes around the Kansas City Current. Then we can't avoid the pain of discussing the premature end to the season for KC, as NJ/NY Gotham bounced them from the playoffs unexpectedly late in extra time. We break down the injuries, the decisions that led to those, the games highs and lows and everything in between. And before the sadness ends, we have to discuss the departure of Hailie Mace from the Current. And another KC Current player is on the move too. Plus, the KC Current are up for nearly all the awards.Sporting Kansas City were less in the news, but Major League Soccer on the whole made massive waves this week. First, they announced a schedule change to a "winter" schedule in 2027. In between there will be one more "regular" season, then a mini season they are calling a "sprint" to start 2027 before the full switch to the summer to spring move in July of 2027. We break down our feelings on the moves and try to capture each side of the equation (for more depth, check out my Op-Ed on the subject). The league also confirmed big changes with the Apple TV deal, including the end of MLS Season Pass.Beyond that, there are rumors of more changes, including the elimination of conferences and a new five division MLS setup. Sheena was very upset at my proposed divisions from nearly a year ago! And of course, MLS may change their playoffs again too. Before we depart, Ike Opara and Sporting KC II made news too, and SKC even signed a player, Cielo Tschantret. If only every week of the offseason was as busy as this one! It's a long episode, but maybe there won't be anything that happens this week?In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:NWSL expanding to Atlanta and another city in 2028USMNT and US U-17 updatesFIFA is raising ticket prices again for the World CupMissouri State comes up short in the CUSA finalHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Vlatko is out as the KC Current coach - 9:37KC Current vs. Gotham playoff stunner - 34:30Hailie Mace departs KC - 1:09:27MLS “Winter” Schedule & other big changes - 1:23:20SKC Round-up - 2:01:48Digital Crawl - 2:07:12Upcoming GamesUSMNT vs. Uruguay, Tues, Nov 18th at 6:00PM CSTMLS playoffs resume Saturday As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. The group jokes about aliens, mental shielding, and Guy's emergency hat deployment skills before shifting into the week's Apple news. They begin with VisionOS 26.2 Beta, noting incremental improvements such as fixes for stylus pressure, stability updates, and lingering bugs in AirDrop visibility, SharePlay DRM playback, and subscription syncing. The panel agrees the update feels like a tightening pass while everyone waits for the next major feature drop. Apple's newest immersive video, "Flight Ready," filmed with Navy F-18s, sparks lively discussion. The group praises the cinematic quality—especially nighttime carrier deck landings and aerial shots—but several mention Apple's signature issue with immersive content: the feeling that "people are way too close to your face." The panel also highlights the increasing amount of third-party immersive Vision Pro content, including music videos, training simulations, and niche experiences created in tools like DaVinci Resolve, signaling that spatial content creation is slowly becoming more accessible. Eric shares his in-store test of the Vision Pro M5, where he focused on widgets, Safari multitasking, virtual displays, and system responsiveness. He intentionally pushed the device hard to see if it stutters—and it didn't. Dave walks through updates in iOS/iPadOS/watchOS/tvOS 26.2 betas, pointing out UI refinements such as expanded Liquid Glass styling, an improved Alarm interface, app sorting options in Game Library, and message-pinning in CarPlay. CarPlay itself becomes a heated topic—Dave explains how answering a call sometimes instantly hangs up afterward. Marty expresses frustration over automotive UI "reactions" in group chats while driving. The general consensus: CarPlay is great… except when it isn't. The group digs into macOS 26.2 (Tahoe) with mixed reactions. While some see improvements, Jeff notes memory issues and audio stack quirks still need addressing. 1Password's new behavior—unlocking automatically after system login—splits the panel. Some appreciate fewer prompts, while others insist on strict manual unlocking for security. A retrospective on five years of Apple's M-series chips follows. Marty mentions real-world benefits moving from M4 to M5, Jeff feels his M2 Pro is still strong, Dave says his M4 Pro Mac mini is now his main machine, and Guy jokes that old Intel Macs were basically "space heaters with keyboards." Chris Armas is a 2025 inductee into the US Soccer Hall of Fame. During his playing career, he played 12 seasons in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, and was a 5x MLS Best XI selection, an MLS and US Open Cup Champion, and played 66 games for the US National Team. The 2000 US Soccer Player of the Year and 2005 MLS Comeback Player of the Year, untimely injuries derailed his inclusion in the 2002 and 2006 US World Cup teams. After retireing from playing, Chris began a coaching career that has taken him to assistant coach roles at Manchester United and Leeds United, as well as MLS Head Coaching stops with the NY Red Bulls (2018 Supporters Shield winners), Toronto FC, and in 2024-2025 the Colorado Rapids. In 2024, he led the Rapids to a remarkable improvement of 23 points, finishing 7th after finishing dead last in 2023. For this he was named an MLSCoach of the Year finalist. In 2025, the Rapids missed out on the playoffs on the final day, and Armas and the Rapids agreed to part ways. In our conversation today, Chris and John discuss the importance of building strong relationships with athletes, establishing trust, and helping each player get better. We discuss his time in England, meeting Sir Alex Ferguson, the British press, and his time in Colorado including the the joys of 2024 and the heartbreak of missing out on the 2025 players due to a stoppage time goal. You will see that Chris is humble, authentic, and driven to keep coaching and learning, and its a wonderful conversation to understand the humanity needed to coach at the top level.  BOOK A SPEAKER: Interested in having John or one of our speaking team come to your school, club or coaching event?
