Hey, soccer fans! Major League Soccer's summer transfer window has officially closed, and the Chicago Fire made eight moves on deadline day. They brought four new players in and moved four players out, not counting the prior loan of defender Christopher Cupps to Greenock Morton. Did the club meet their roster needs of improved midfield, attacking depth, and support on the backline? Nick breaks it all down, including how the transfers address those needs, concerns on the roster status, and how the revamped team will look on the pitch. Players In: Johan Gomez, Andreas Hanche-Olsen, Anzor Mekvabishvili, Noah Allen Players Out: Viktor Radojevic, Jason Shokalook, Dylan Borso, Joel Waterman Also, congrats to winger Philip Zinckernagel and the club for renegotiating his contract and making him a Designated Player! It's a well-deserved and well-earned contract for Zinck, who has been a star for both the Men in Red and the league. Tune in and join the conversation! In the modern game of football, the supporter has a particularly strong voice. Often the fan’s voice is represented with their finance, other times by their social media influence, and other times the voice is presented with violence. The relationship between an ardent supporter and the football team can be a tenuous one at times. It mirrors often the human relationship with God — we deny authority, we rise up and rebel, and more. Soccer Psalm 14 (as a reflection of Psalm 14) considers how the need for a response from the Owner (from God) against the foolish rebellion. God’s presence with the righteous and upright makes all the difference. The Soccer Psalms, is a self-published book available on Amazon which is also in Spanish, British English, Portuguese, and French. All books are available globally on Amazon and contain 31 psalms that have been translated into “soccer psalms” — with words, language, and metaphors that connect soccer to God’s Word. I also include some reflection on the context and writing as well as some questions for reflection. Check out the collection below: The Soccer Psalms From the Touchline is a short-feature (10-15 min) podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Instead, they left with a 3-1 loss, another frustrating performance and even more questions about where this season is headed. Chucky Lozano delivered in his emotional return to San Diego, scoring against his former club and looking like the Galaxy's most dangerous player. Sergi Roberto also made an immediate impression off the bench, giving LA a glimpse of what its midfield could become as he works toward full fitness.  But the individual positives can't hide the bigger problem. The Galaxy have one win in their last nine games, and an offense loaded with recognizable names continues to struggle. LA has scored just five goals over its last six matches despite ranking near the top of MLS in shots on target. Joseph Paintsil's form is becoming a serious concern, Robert Taylor continues to make a case for more minutes, and the podcast asks a question that suddenly doesn't seem so crazy: Should Taylor start over Paintsil? Then there's Greg Vanney. With 11 games remaining, the Galaxy need to produce at a dramatically higher rate than they have all season. The schedule isn't getting easier, the teams around them have games in hand, and simply sneaking into the playoffs may no longer be enough to settle questions about Vanney's future. And hovering over everything is Riqui Puig. His return to full training could finally be approaching in September, but after nearly two years without hearing directly from him, it's time to hear where Puig believes he is physically, mentally, and in his Galaxy future.  Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter break down the San Diego loss, the controversial disallowed goal, Lozano's performance, Roberto's debut, Paintsil's struggles, Puig's return, the increasingly unforgiving playoff math, and the mounting pressure on the people responsible for turning this roster into a winner. The Galaxy have spent months talking about what this team could become. Now they're almost out of time to prove it. -- Follow Corner of the Galaxy All Season Long Corner of the Galaxy is kicking off Season 18 and has surpassed 1,300 episodes! As the longest-running team-specific podcast in Major League Soccer, we've been covering the LA Galaxy through championships, rebuilds, blockbuster signings, unforgettable moments, and everything in between. The Seattle Sounders' winless run continued in Matchday 23 with a 2-2 draw vs. Chicago Fire FC at Lumen Field, but the Rave Green did get a memorable club debut from new No. 9 Dejan Jovelic. Does the super Serbian raise Seattle's ceiling in the race for trophies in 2026, or will it take more for the squad to emerge from its summer doldrums? That's one of the topics we'll discuss, along with the continued emergence of Sebastian Gomez, a look at the center back situation and the potential impact of the injury returns of Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris.Later on, we'll jump around the league to discuss a standout performance from Philadelphia Union rising star Cavan Sullivan, a four-goal outburst from Lionel Messi, and a tense interaction between Chucky Lozano and Mikey Varas' in the LA Galaxy's match against San Diego FC.☕️ Lobbing Scorchers Kickoff is presented by QED Coffee, a Seattle-based roaster, coffee shop, and coffee subscription service. Another Playoff Format? MLS Discusses Massive Post-Season Changes

Feed the Fire: A Chicago Fire Podcast

Hey, soccer fans! Major League Soccer has proposed a new playoff format to coincide with its new calendar. The proposal moves away from the current single-elimination tournament to a double-elimination tournament seeing up to 20 teams qualifying for the post-season. The top eight teams in the league will face double-elimination with lower finishing teams battling it out in a lose-and-go-home scenario. Teams are also re-seeded after every round to ensure teams with the better regular season record maintain home field advantage. This is a massive change to MLS's current format and a huge departure from anything in American sports. In fact, they consulted with the Australian Football Leaugue, who plays Aussie Rules Football, to come up with this format. Nick is extremely critical of this proposed change - there's no consistency within the league - this is perhaps the fifth or sixth playoff iteration in league history. The proposal also tries to incentivize the regular season but gives more worse teams the opportunity to make a post-season run. It's confusing to new fans of soccer and MLS, and looks purely like a business move to beef up a tv package offering. What do you think of the new proposal? How would you fix the MLS Cup Playoffs - assuming it's even broken? Tune in and join the conversation! Make sure you like & subscribe, rate & review, and keep growing the show. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian Premier League chat. The Whitecaps continue to fly high, extending their lead at the top of the MLS West with a comfortable win in Kansas City. We pick over the main talking points coming out of that one, chat about the great weekend of results elsewhere for the 'Caps, and look ahead to the Canadian Championship semi-final clash with CF Montreal. But the Whitecaps aren't resting on their laurels. With the MLS transfer market closing fast, Vancouver don't seem finished yet with another couple of additions rumoured. But with all these additions, and with how well the team is doing, it does create a little bit of a conundrum in terms of developing their younger players, with the danger of there being a logjam. We chat about a couple of loan deals and could this be helped if the 'Caps actually bought and run a CPL team of their own? We also look at the weekend's CPL action, and music-wise, The Fall wrap up their residency as our Artists of the Month with a final unique cover version, The Avons feature as our C86 era song, and we've a song about Brighton and Hove Albion in Wavelength. Lobbing Scorchers, Ari Liljenwall and Noah Riffe react to Adrian Hanauer's open letter to Sounders supporters, breaking down what the majority owner actually said, what he chose to leave out, and whether the messaging matches the moment for a fan base that has watched the season slip away. Lobbing Scorchers digs into whether the Sounders will actually add another reinforcement before the window closes. New signing Dejan Joveljić could give the attack the presence it has been missing, but with midfield questions still unresolved and injury risk piling up across the roster, is one striker really enough to salvage the playoff push? Ari and Noah round out the show with the results of a Lobbing Scorchers supporter poll, getting into who actually filled it out, why supporters still stand behind Brian Schmetzer despite the results, the growing criticism of Sounders spending, and the worsening sentiment across the fan base.Subscribe to the NEW Lobbing Scorchers Blog: www.lobbingscorchers.comFollow Lobbing Scorchers:YouTubeInstagramBlueskyTikTokFacebookAri LiljenwallNoah RiffeSPONSORSQED Coffee - a Seattle based roaster, coffee shop and coffee subscription service. Lozano returns to face his former club for the first time, bringing plenty of emotion to a match the Galaxy desperately need. But after three consecutive games with a red card, Greg Vanney says his team must control that emotion, keep 11 players on the field, and finally turn its revamped roster into points.  And reinforcements are arriving. Sergi Roberto is ready to play. The former Barcelona captain explains why he chose Los Angeles, the role Riqui Puig played in bringing him to the Galaxy, and his desire to help push the club into the playoffs. Vanney believes Roberto can become the on-field organizer the Galaxy have been missing — a player capable of controlling the midfield and raising the team's ceiling. There could also be one more roster move coming before Wednesday's transfer deadline, while the Galaxy continue to evaluate their remaining U22 Initiative opportunity or other needed positions. But everything eventually comes back to Saturday night. A win could vault the Galaxy right back into the crowded Western Conference playoff race. A loss would make the climb significantly harder. With Lozano walking into a hostile Snapdragon Stadium, Roberto ready to enter the midfield, and the pressure building around Vanney, this feels like one of those games that could define what comes next.  Is this finally the night the reloaded Galaxy become the team everyone thinks they can be?

A 2-2 draw with CF Montreal featured Ruben Ramos Jr.'s first MLS goal, an outrageous backheel from Maya Yoshida and several encouraging performances. But JT Marcinkowski's second-half red card changed the match and continued an alarming trend: the Galaxy have now been shown a red card in three consecutive games and have six this season, tied for the MLS lead.  Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter break down the discipline problems that continue to cost the Galaxy valuable points — a particularly painful problem with the club sitting just outside the Western Conference playoff positions.  But there are reasons for optimism. Sergi Roberto is finally in Los Angeles and could be available this weekend, while João Klauss may also be nearing his return. Add them to Lozano, Kyogo, Paintsil and an improving group of young players, and Greg Vanney suddenly has options he hasn't had for much of the season.  And then there's Chucky Lozano. After three appearances with the Galaxy, the flashes are there — and the podcast explains why there's little concern about the lack of goals so far. More importantly, everything Josh has seen around the team suggests Lozano has fit into the locker room extremely well.  Now comes the game everyone has been waiting for: Lozano returns to San Diego to face his former club. Can the Galaxy keep 11 players on the field, unleash their increasingly dangerous attack, and turn a highly emotional night at Snapdragon Stadium into three desperately needed points?

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire front office continues its pursuit of midfield firepower during the summer transfer window. They have targeted Georgian international Anzor Mekvabishvili, currently playing in Romania's top flight. The Men in Red were turned down by his current club, Universitatea Craiova earlier this year, but the club have stuck with their valuation (reportedly a little above $2 million) and the deal looks close to getting done. The signing seems to fit the Fire's profile for recent midfield targets: Kevin De Bruyne, Patrick Berg, and Leon Goretzka. However, they've settled for Dje D'Avilla and Anton Saletros, whose performances in the midfield leave soemthing to be desired on a team with trophy aspirations. Tune in to hear Nick's takes on the transfer target, including how the Fire got to this point/what need they're trying to fill, what's the profile of Mekvabishvili, and how will he integrate to the team. If this signing goes the way the Fire want it to, Mekvabishvili will unlock the offense and control matches from his midfield position. If this is a bust, then the Fire will have another decent defensive midfielder taking up an international roster slot. What do you think about the transfer target? How will Mekvabishvili fare in Major League Soccer? For the Glory KC is back with the 192nd episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City have had an incredibly busy week. The last six days has seen the departure of fan favorite and Designated Player, Manu Garcia. The arrival of the fourth most expensive player in MLS history in Andre Luiz. A rumored even more expensive transfer of Nico Fernandez Mercau. But Saturday night may be the biggest news yet. Fabrizio Romano and Tom Bogert are reporting that Dejan Joveljic is moving within the conference to the Seattle Sounders! You'd think it'd be a massive transfer fee, but instead it's only $6 million for one of the best goal scorers in Major League Soccer. Yes, it's a 50 percent profit after only 18 months, but it's a stunner. We go through all the reasons this could be happening and try to make sense of the news. Did Dejan want out? Did he not like how the Manu saga went down this week? Sheena did live sleuthing on the podcast and noticed he'd been absent from their social media all week. When David Lee told us midweek that teams are calling about their players, it seems clear Dejan was always the answer, and he may have already been negotiating at that time.Beyond that, is Dejan just not a system fit for Lee and Rapha Wicky? Or perhaps Lee just wants his guys. The typical starting lineup only has two players that were around more than 11 months ago in Jake Davis and Zorhan Bassong. Is the General Allocation Money (GAM) just too much to pass up?We go through all the permutations. And we talk about what comes next. More Designated Players have to be arriving, right? We also went through all the big points from David Lee's press conference and tried to figure out what DPs Lee could sign. I threw out Cucho Hernandez as a former player who did great in MLS and Sheena went a lot more out of left field with USA-loving Erling Haaland. It's nonsense, but it least it was fun nonsense.Speaking of DPs, we talk about new signing Andre Luiz, the rumored transfer for Nico Fernandez and all the other fallout of the week for Sporting KC. It's weird to record a day before a game, but the news just became too much. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast, who knows when we'll have to record again with the transfer window closing in 11 days on September 2nd.We also talked about the game against St. Louis City SC, that SKC dominated but only got a draw out of. Taylor Calheira was one of the stars of the night and I guess is this team's starting striker now? What a wild week! The KC Current also earned a draw, but it felt more disappointing considering the quality of the two teams. Kansas City seemed to have all the advantages on the Seattle Reign but their comeback, like Sporting's, ended with only a tie.In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few more topics:SKC IIMLS Playoff Expansion... again?!?!UEFA, Concacaf and InfantinoArgentina punishedHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro - 0:00Sporting KC - 2:03KC Current - 1:23:46Digital Crawl - 1:33:07Upcoming GamesSporting KC @ Atlanta United, SUN, August 23rd at 6:00PM CST (Wooden Spoon Battle)SKC II @ Tacoma Defiance, MON, August 24th at 9:00PMKC Current vs. North Carolina Courage, SAT, August 29th at 5:30PMSporting KC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, SAT, August 29th at 7:30PMSKC II @ Whitecaps 2, SUN, August 30th at 6:00PMAs a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Playing with 10 men for the entire second half, the Galaxy battled to a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, snapping a six-game winless streak and moving within two points of the Western Conference playoff line.  On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy, Josh Guesman and Sophie Nicolaou break down Hirving “Chucky” Lozano's first start and home debut, the energy he's already bringing to the locker room, and why the Galaxy suddenly look like a much more dangerous team. Lozano played roughly 65 minutes, showing his ability to break pressure, combine with teammates, and create problems off the dribble.  But the night also belonged to 19-year-old Harbor Miller and goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. Miller created Joseph Paintsil's game-winning goal and continued his rapid emergence at right back, while Marcinkowski delivered another outstanding performance to preserve the shutout.  The show also tackles Lucas Sanabria's costly red card, the Galaxy's growing discipline problem, the improving defense, and the upcoming trip to Montreal—with Sergi Roberto potentially arriving as soon as Friday.  With 13 matches remaining, are we finally starting to see the team the Galaxy hoped they could become?

During the month of August, we’re going back to our Lessons from Lasso series we did over the past few years and re-airing some episodes to coincide with the new season of the hit-TV show Ted Lasso.  Today: Lesson 55 “Be Curious, Not Judgmental.” This episode originally aired September 13, 2023. Today, we look at how Christians need to balance curiosity and judgement. Sometimes we can feel as though we can't make any judgment calls, and that's just not true — we'll see what the Bible has to say about the balance. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Rev Brad and occasional guests touch on various issues around the topics of faith, family, and football (soccer). Also, don’t forget that you can listen in our app, SoccrChapUtd, in the Apple and Google store.

On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy: From the Box, Josh Guesman and Damian Calhoun break down Lozano's debut, Kyogo Furuhashi's first start, Emiro Garcés' third red card of the season, and another frustrating night for the Galaxy attack. The defense limited Houston's chances, but the Galaxy still lacked the progressive passing needed to supply Lozano, Kyogo and Joseph Paintsil. That makes the arrival of Sergi Roberto increasingly important as the club searches for a solution in midfield. The show also covers Miki Yamane's transfer to Urawa Red Diamonds, Harbor Miller's expected move into the starting right-back role, and the possibility of more roster moves. With 14 matches remaining and the Galaxy still within reach of the playoff line, the pressure is building.
