Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Reports yesterday from FOX and the Athletic indicate that Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah might not participate in the Concacaf Gold Cup this summer for the USMNT. Both are coming off long European seasons with Milan, but it's a huge blow for Mauricio Pochettino and the national team. This summer is the last opportunity to have an extended window to work with players ahead of next summer's World Cup. With Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah already missing due to the Club World Cup, Pochettino's job gets that much more difficult to look ahead to 2026. It does create some opportunities for players to impress and play their way into deeper consideration for key roles in the World Cup though. Perhaps Diego Luna SZN is upon us?Tottenham Hotspur won an uninspiring Europa League final 1-0 over Manchester United. I think my prediction of it having the feel of a relegation playoff came true, Spurs were defensive and very un-Ange like in the win but it got the job done. They are in the Champions League next year while Manchester United does have the feel of a relegated club at the moment. 16th in the Premier League, out of Europe in 2025-26, losing out on somewhere between $100-150M because of that, and while they say they don't have to sell players to add in the summer window, that doesn't really seem possible for a club that has lost more than double the allowed amount in the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Rules. I'm not sure if Manchester United can be what we've known them to be any time soon due to their financial situation. 4 comebacks highlighted Lamar Hunt US Open Cup play last night as Minnesota, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Austin advanced while DC United and Red Bulls needed penalty shootouts to join them. The inauguaral Concacaf W Champions Cup final will see Tigres host Gotham on Saturday. The hosts won 2-0 over Portland in their semifinal last night while Gotham won 3-1 over Club America. In Club World Cup updates:Endrick will miss the tournament for Real Madrid due to a hamstring injuryJesus Vallejo will not see his contract extended with Madrid for the tournament, he's out of contract this summer. Johnny Cardoso is Atleti's top target as a defensive midfielder, although it's unclear if they could get it done ahead of the tournament. Spurs have a priority transfer option on the USMNT midfielder. Dome Torrent, former Pep Guardiola assistant and last at Atletico San Luis in Liga MX, is the new manager of Monterrey ahead of the tournament. Boca Juniors have settled on Gustavo Quinteros as their top candidate to become their new manager, but Sevilla are also interested in the current Velez coach. Wydad are looking for a new manager as they have parted "mutually" with Rhulani Mokwena. They finished third in the Moroccan league this season, missing out on the Champions League, and they are facing a transfer ban amidst reports of Mokwena working for several months without being paid. Miguel Cardoso is leading Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa into the Champions League final this weekend with Egypt's Pyramids FC. It will be over two legs. Then he will turn his attention towards the Club World Cup where he wants to "showcase our full potential." New ticket options available for the matches in Atlanta, check out FIFA.com/tickets.More Morning Espresso to be served up tomorrow morning.
On the latest State of the Union episode, we highlight the FA Cup triumph for Crystal Palace, who ended a 119-year drought with a 1-0 win over Manchester City. Chris Richards played a starring role, becoming—along with Matt Turner—the first USMNT player to win the FA Cup since Tim Howard in 2004. In the Netherlands, Malik Tillman capped PSV's 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam, completing a remarkable Eredivisie turnaround where Ajax went from nine points up to one point behind. In Italy, Juventus took a step toward Champions League qualification as Weston McKennie and Tim Weah featured in a 2-0 win. Roma beat AC Milan 3-1 despite an assist from Pulisic. Meanwhile, Inter and Napoli drew, pushing the Serie A title race to the final day. In Germany, Gio Reyna's late appearance in Dortmund's 3-0 win sealed a UCL spot, though his emotional reaction hinted at a possible farewell. Where would you like Reyna to land next season? In La Liga, Lamine Yamal dazzled again, scoring his 17th goal in all competitions. Is he truly the best player in the world? MLS Rivalry Week saw intense matchups: Reus saved LA Galaxy with a free-kick, while Inter Miami's form collapsed in a 3-0 loss to Orlando. We closed the pid with a breakdown of the U.S. Gold Cup 60-man prelim roster, headlined by Pulisic, Balogun, and Tyler Adams, with debates on sleeper picks like Sebastian Berhalter. Alexi Lalas and David Mosse are fired up as American stars continue to make waves in Italy. Christian Pulisic delivered a goal and assist in AC Milan's 3-1 win over Bologna, while Weston McKennie set up Randal Kolo Muani in Juventus' draw with Lazio. The Serie A title race is heating up, with just one point separating Inter Milan and Napoli. In the Netherlands, PSV moved closer to securing the title after a comeback win over Feyenoord, with Malik Tillman and Richard Ledezma starting. Over in Germany, Dortmund crashed Xabi Alonso's farewell match, as his Real Madrid future comes into focus. After the fourth El Clásico of the season, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti officially announced he's headed to coach Brazil. Despite a hat trick from Mbappé, it was Lamine Yamal and Raphinha who powered Barcelona to victory. Where does Yamal stack up in the Ballon d'Or conversations? Back home, MLS delivered drama: Philly and Columbus drew in a top-of-the-table showdown, Diego Luna bagged his 7th goal in 11 matches, Minnesota dominated Inter Miami, and Brian White notched a brace to lift Vancouver. In #AskAlexi, the guys discuss the LA Galaxy possibly moving on from Greg Vanney and dive into the costs of World Cup tickets. When the US Men's National Team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, it was a setback to the growth of soccer in America. The disappointment of that failed qualification triggered changes at the top of the team, and a concerted effort to integrate a new group of young talent that could get the team back to the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2022. Players like Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Antonee Robinson, Kellyn Acosta and others became fixtures of the starting XI through 2018 and into the 2019 Gold Cup in an effort to gain the experience needed to excel on the international stage. Aaron Long was in that group of players. He worked his way into the national team picture after becoming a stalwart defender under Jesse Marsch for the NY Red Bulls. Once he landed on the senior team roster, his impact was felt. Long became a starter and team captain. Then, after fighting through injuries, figured into the final stages of the World Cup Qualifiers before making the roster for the team's trip to Qatar. Long joined Founding Futbol to talk about his journey through MLS and onto the national team. He discusses how then coach Gregg Berhalter gave the team clear focus on a return to the world's biggest tournament, and what it was like learning to win with a young group of players. Long also reflects on the importance of the USMNT return to the World Cup, and how it helped continue to elevate the game in America. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America.Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com. Tab argues the best players are already in the pool and backs Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Yunus Musah as the team's core, while questioning Gio Reyna's long-term role. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. The Concacaf Nations League semifinals will be played tonight as the USMNT hosts Panama at 7pm followed by Canada vs. Mexico at 10:30pm, you can watch both on Paramount+. Excited to see a fully healthy Tyler Adams working under Mauricio Pochettino, curious to see if Josh Sargent can be the player for the USMNT that he's been at Norwich, and I want to see if Weston McKennie's desired "nastiness" comes out tonight in the team. With meaningful games few and far between for the USMNT between now and the World Cup opener next June, this is an important test for Pochettino and the team. Lots of eyes on Jesse Marsch and Canada as well against a Mexico side that has not been impressive for a little while now. Japan booked their spot in the 2026 World Cup this morning with a 2-0 win over Bahrain. Takefusa Kubo scored a goal and assisted on the opener. They are the first to achieve qualification, joining the hosts for next summer's tournament. Australia moved a step closer with a 5-1 win over Indonesia this morning as well.4 upsets in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup last night as El Farolito, Little Rock Rangers, and Virginia Dream knocked off pro teams to advance. The Des Moines Menace, stacked with former pros, also won although it's hard to put it in the same group as the other amateur teams. Sacha Kljestan scored twice as the Menace defeated Sporting Kansas City II. One element of the USL promotion and relegation announcement yesterday that came out after the fact is that it is contingent on the first division professional league launching. Paul McDonough feels that it wouldn't be as "authentic" if it just includes the current USL Championship and USL League One setup. According to the USSF Pro League Standard, they'll need 12 teams in 3 time zones and in stadiums of at least 15,000 seats to start a first division professional league. I'm just hoping that the plans are more concerned with long-term sustainability than short-term buzz. A new 7v7 event is launching internationally for women's teams called the World Sevens Football. The idea is for it be like grand slam events throughout the year and with a $5 million purse for each event. The first is set for May in Portugal and will include top women's professional clubs. Will it include current women's professional players? UEFA Nations League quarterfinals today, Italy will be shorthanded against Germany at Mateo Retegui is out with a thigh injury.
