9 mei 2013. One of the unique attributes of the 2009 US Men's National Team that beat Spain in the Confederations Cup was the dynamic makeup of the roster. From established stars like Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, to young emerging talent like Jozy Altidore, as well as young talents like Jonathan Bornstein. But once player's story became well known because of its unlikelihood. Jay DeMerit was a starting center back for that team after working his way into England's top flight as part of Watford. However, he only played for Watford because Major League Soccer passed on him, he took a chance on himself and moved to England with few resources and a big dream. DeMerit joined Founding Futbol to talk about the 2009 Confederations Cup win over Spain, his path to the Premier League with Watford and how that helped him land a spot on the USMNT. DeMerit also shares his current endeavor -- RISExSHINE -- and why he is passionate about helping harness the reality of a device-driven world to help our youth become well rounded individuals through development multiple forms of intelligence. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Extra Time is an additional weekly episode that shares reactions and reflections from the chapters, and brings additional guests into the fold. The USA Soccercast is back to jumpstart the weekend with an action packed Episode 118! On this episode, we welcome Eric Schmitz from the World of Concacaf Podcast to help us debate one of the main topics of the week. First, we have discussion on the rumored 2024 home jersey for the USMNT and USWNT. U.S. Soccer needs a jersey identity, and the Waldos are it. However, we discuss the rumored jersey design and explain the need to identify something that U.S. Soccer fans can start to get behind ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Speaking of the 2026 World Cup, the rumors are all over the place: LA out, Vegas potentially in, and AT&T Stadium aka JerryWorld in the driver's seat to host the 2026 World Cup Final. Could SoFi Stadium, the most expensive stadium in the history of the world, really not host matches? It seems possible, and Jerry Jones and the Dallas committee is pulling out all the stops in an effort to host the final. After the break, we are joined by Eric Schmitz of the World of Concacaf Podcast to discuss a debate that was set in motion a couple days ago by Jozy Altidore's appearance on CBS Sports Golazo's “Kickin It” show. Eric Schmitz helps us break down which team could be the better one between the two teams (with some additions to each, because it helps balance how you discuss this). It's an awesome conversation that you won't want to miss. And you should chime in with your thoughts in the comments! Also, don't forget to follow us on Twitter and to tap into our Linktree, which will give you access to all our affiliate links: Fanatics, Homage, BreakingT, and the MLS Store. Fall is coming, which means a great chance to get some new stuff. Now, you'll be able to save some money on all the cool soccer apparel or anything else you're interested in wearing! And finally, tag us on Twitter or email USA Soccercast at Gmail dot com with any topic suggestions or questions for the show. We'd like to have a mailbag episode, and we could use your questions! Hey, Fire fans! Your Men in Red, the Chicago Fire, played the New England Revolution to a 3-3 draw at Gillette Stadium, behind goals from Georgios Koutsias, Maren Haile-Selassie, and an own goal from the Revs defense. However - and as per usual - the Fire were unable to hold the lead, giving up equalizing goals off of corner kicks to Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore. (And that was after Noel Buck opened things up for New England with a banger.) In the second half of the show, Nick looks forward to the mid-week matchup against Eastern Conference rival Toronto FC. TFC is coming off a solid win, but internal struggles between manager Bob Bradley and Italian star Federico Bernardeschi could undermine their chances of a win streak. If the Fire continue to play counter-attacking football, and Lorenzo Insigne and Richie Laryea can't pick up the slack, maybe the Men in Red from the States take the three points. As an Iraqi-American, Audie Attar's (@AudieAttar) parents saw athletic talent in him and nurtured it through high school and into college. Audie played football at UCLA before a fight got him kicked out of the school and landed him at Idaho State. The racial undercurrents of the fight, grounded in Islamophobia, did not stop Audie's team at UCLA from working hard to get him back on their side. Shortly after, Audie made his way back to UCLA before graduating and landing a role as an NFL agent. That was the start of Audie's sports management journey — and since then, he founded Paradigm Sports (@paradigmsports). Audie is referred to as “one of combat sports most powerful agents” according to an article in a 2017 MMA.com article, in case you are wondering how that's going. The launch of the 2022 FIFA World cup is just around the corner and the youngest team in USMNT history is set to represent the US on soccer's biggest stage. Former USMNT striker Jozy Altidore sat down with David Greene to relive his time representing the US in two World Cups. His 2009 goal led the US to upset Spain and break that country's 35-game winning streak. Some still consider it to be one of the most important wins in US men's soccer history. “It was like a flag bearer moment for us. We stuck our flag in the ground. It was a huge moment, a huge indication of where the sport in our country's going” said Altidore. Share your favorite World Cup moment with us on Twitter and follow us on Instagram. This is the fifth installment in our historical recap series, which is mostly just for patrons, and in this one we look back at a match against an opponent we face later this month in Qatar. In 2010, we got a draw! But our heroes weren't actually heroes (according to Greg), average players can do a job at the World Cup, and Jamie Carragher is still embarrassed after that Jozy Altidore run.
