Following a disappointing 3-0 defeat in El Tráfico, the Galaxy suddenly find themselves facing difficult questions about their roster, their attack, their playoff hopes, and whether time is beginning to run out for Greg Vanney. On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy, Josh Guesman is joined by LA Times soccer reporter Kevin Baxter to examine what happened at Dignity Health Sports Park—and why the performance may have revealed much deeper issues than a single rivalry loss. Are the Galaxy simply shorthanded after the departure of Gabriel Pec? Or are there structural problems that can't be solved until the transfer window delivers reinforcements? The discussion dives into the lack of attacking depth, the pressure now facing Will Kuntz and the front office, and why every match before the Leagues Cup break could determine whether the Galaxy remain in the playoff race -- or begin planning for 2027. The show also explores: - Why the Galaxy's offense has stalled since Gabriel Pec's departure - Whether Robert Taylor can provide immediate help - Greg Vanney's tactical options with a depleted roster - The latest transfer speculation and Designated Player outlook - Why Maya Yoshida's return and other injured players may not be enough - How MLS missed a massive opportunity following the 2026 FIFA World Cup - The importance of Wednesday's matchup with St. Louis City SC and why it already feels like a must-win. Josh and Kevin also tackle one of the biggest questions surrounding the club: If help isn't arriving immediately, how does this team survive the next month? It's an honest conversation about the Galaxy's current reality—what can be fixed, what can't, and whether the organization still has enough time to rescue a season that appears to be slipping away. If you're wondering whether the Galaxy are still capable of making a playoff push, whether Greg Vanney is coaching for his future, or what moves could reshape this roster before the transfer window closes, this episode has the insight you're looking for.

On this episode of Corner of the Galaxy, Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira break down everything surrounding Friday night's showdown with LAFC, including why this edition of El Tráfico could set the tone for the remainder of the Galaxy's 2026 campaign. The guys dive into the arrival of Finnish winger Robert Taylor, discussing where he fits into Greg Vanney's plans, whether the signing is being misunderstood by supporters, and why the veteran could end up playing a much larger role than many expect. They also explain why Maya Yoshida's new green card may be one of the biggest roster moves the Galaxy have made all season, potentially saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in international roster costs while creating valuable flexibility for the summer transfer window. Speaking of transfers... The conversation explores the latest Designated Player rumors, the search for attacking reinforcements, why the Galaxy's biggest signings may still be ahead, and how MLS roster rules continue to shape every move Will Kuntz makes behind the scenes. Plus: A complete El Tráfico preview Why Greg Vanney believes rivalry matches bring out the best in his squad How Robert Taylor fits the Galaxy's system The latest on transfer targets and Designated Player speculation Juan Mano Martinez's move to Liga MX Dylan Vanny and Ruben Ramos Jr. joining the U.S. U-20 National Team MLS schedule updates and what the second half of the season looks like Whether you're preparing for El Tráfico or trying to understand where the Galaxy's roster is headed over the next few weeks, this episode covers everything you need to know before kickoff. -- Corner of the Galaxy is kicking off Season 18, just a few shows past number 1,300! Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. We went to a mecca of football to film the latest episode. This conversation takes us to Turin, Italy, where we were in the Juventus Creator Lab with Italian football (I mean soccer for the Americans) legend and one of the best defenders of all time Giorgio Chiellini.Giorgio's career and playing style were defined by Juventus' very motto, fino alla fine (“until the end”). It's also a mentality that he brings to every aspect of life on and off the pitch. After an illustrious playing career at one of the world's biggest clubs, Juventus, and a career that also included two World Cup appearances for Italy and winning the Euro 2020 as the Captain of Italy, Giorgio came back home to Turin rejoin the club where he starred for 17 years: Juventus. Giorgio has gone from the pitch to the boardroom, helping to lead Juventus as the Director of Football Strategy. He has brought the player's perspective to the business side of football, balancing the nuances of sports and business.Despite the demands that Giorgio faced on the field as a player to maintain a standard of play at the highest levels of the game, he found time during his career to pursue his passion for business. He received his MBA while playing for Juventus and also was involved in the player development side in his final years as a player at LAFC. More recently, he became an investor in LAFC and in Mercury13, a multi-club investor in women's football teams, including FC Como. He's also an active investor in the European startup community.Giorgio and I had a wide-ranging and fascinating conversation that covered several dimensions of the business of sport. We discussed:How teams, owners, and investors can balance both the sport and business aspects of the game. What it means for sports now that players can have bigger social followings than their clubs or leagues. How Juventus has built and amplified its brand through initiatives like the Creator Lab.How clubs like Juventus can help players build their off-field brand while maintaining a high-quality on-field product. How Giorgio's work off the field while playing informed how he wanted to spend his time post-career in business. What Giorgio's day-to-day is like as Director of Football Strategy for Juventus. Why Giorgio invested in LAFC and what he thinks about the future of the MLS.What American owners and investors can learn from European soccer clubs and owners, and what European clubs and owners can learn from American owners and investors. Thanks, Giorgio, for sharing your wisdom, expertise, and enthusiasm at the intersection of sports and business.Note: this episode was filmed in October 2025 with a plan to publish the conversation around the World Cup.Show Notes00:00 Split Second Decision01:06 A Message from Our Sponsor, Ultimus02:10 Meet Giorgio Chiellini04:17 What Is the Juventus Creator Lab04:36 Building Fans Through Content05:27 Football Brand Goes Global06:15 Revenue From Winning06:43 Two Hearts One Club07:52 Winning Versus Storytelling08:40 Fans Everywhere Now09:27 Too Many Games Problem09:51 Stakeholders and Calendar11:00 Owner Advice Communication11:28 From Kid to Club 14:12 Film Study for Matches15:02 The Saka Tactical Foul17:26 Social Media and Mental Health29:32 US World Cup Reality29:45 Grassroots Long Game30:09 MLS and USL Momentum30:14 Stadiums and Growth30:20 MLS Season vs Playoffs30:46 Supporters Shield Incentives31:11 Travel and Rest Mentality31:33 Europe Stakes Comparison31:54 Highlights Era Question32:24 Bite-Sized Sports Culture33:40 Choosing What to Watch33:55 Sports Must Adapt34:33 Owners Business View35:15 TV Rights and Strategy36:05 Institutional Money Trend36:42 Why Funds Love Sports37:04 Balancing Profit and Emotion38:12 Fiduciary Duty vs Winning39:15 Permanent Capital Advantage40:42 Mission Values Legacy41:54 Juventus DNA and Family44:31 Leadership Lessons Learned45:38 From Captain to Executive47:05 Humanity and Energy48:21 Player to Business Challenges50:00 Investing in Italian Startups51:47 How He Picks Investments52:43 Innovation and AI in Sport53:16 Favorite Alternative Investment54:34 Profitability and Winning55:21 ClosingA Word from Our Sponsor, UltimusThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus, the full-service fund administrator and transfer agent powering asset managers in private and public markets. Travis, Darren, and Vince recap LAFC's 1-0 home win over the Seattle Sounders in a strangely high-stakes May match that most likely wouldn't have impacted Marc Dos Santos's job status, BUT COULD've... and DID end LAFC's two-month winless run at BMO Stadium. Hany Mukhtar's hat trick is enough for Nashville as LAFC's losing skid hits 4 matches. On this episode, we break down the emotional rollercoaster that is the Seattle Sounders, from the season's best win straight into the worst loss, the end of the home undefeated streak, and a worrying stretch of form that was only partially salvaged by the Earthquakes win. We talk Moose's tooth, then dive into some obligatory striker discourse, including a discussion on whether Seattle's investment in Jordan Morris was justified, and what Craig Waibel's response might be if asked about urgency at the striker position. Then, we widen out to the Western Conference, debate which team is clearly superior to Seattle, and preview LAFC as the next opponent: what's the vibe going into that matchup at BMO Stadium and how should Seattle approach it?Follow Lobbing Scorchers: YouTube Instagram Bluesky TikTok Facebook Ari Liljenwall Noah Riffe Niko MorenoSPONSORS☕️ Lobbing Scorchers Kickoff is presented by QED Coffee a Seattle based roaster, coffee shop and coffee subscription service. Chris Wittyngham, Tony Meola, and Benny Feilhaber react to the news that Johnny Cardoso will require ankle surgery, and what it could mean for the makeup of the USMNT squad. With Christian Pulisic, Tanner Tessmann, and Tim Weah also dealing with late-season knocks, how worried should U.S. fans be about the mounting injury list? The crew also breaks down what Mauricio Pochettino and his staff learned while scouting over the weekend, whether Jack McGlynn's brace vs. LAFC earned him a closer look, and if Poch is making a mistake by limiting his pre-World Cup camp to just 26 players. Plus, with Cardoso likely out of contention for the World Cup, the guys revisit their projected roster. If Pochettino switches back to a back four, how many defenders does he need to bring? Producer's Note: This episode ends with the crew's reaction to Atlético Madrid confirming that Johnny Cardoso suffered a high-grade ankle sprain. The news broke during the show, which is why the opening discussion around Atlético's Champions League semifinal exit does not mention the injury or its potential World Cup implications. Jimmy Conrad, Tony Meola, and (eventually) Charlie Davies discuss Liga MX's dominance over MLS in the Concacaf Champions Cup following Nashville and LAFC's elimination from the competition. Staying in Mexico, the guys react to Javier Aguirre threatening to leave Liga MX players off his World Cup squad unless they report for a month-long national team camp. USMNT legend Clint Mathis joins to reflect on his 2002 World Cup heroics, almost joining Bayern Munich, and playing with a chip on his shoulder. And the crew reacts to breaking news out of Spain as Atletico Madrid confirm Johnny Cardoso has suffered a high-grade ankle sprain.
