Kellyn Acosta was a key member of the US Men's National Team that qualified for and then played in the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar. His journey to that tournament, and significance of his participation, is unique to the story of soccer in America. Acosta was born in Dallas, Texas and joined he FC Dallas youth system in 2009. He worked his way through the Development Academy, then onto the senior team in 2013. He emerged as a regular on the FC Dallas team and became recognized as a rising star in the US Soccer ecosystem. He finally broke through with the US Men's National Team in 2016, at a time of transition. The team was unsuccessful in its efforts to qualify for the World Cup; then a legendary group of veterans was transitioning out of the program and a young group introduced rapidly into the first team. Kellyn was part of that group and experienced the ebbs and flows of the transition before ultimately being a key contributor in the Qualifying cycle. He is the son of a Japanese father and an African American Mother. When he earned a roster spot for the 2022 World Cup, Kellyn became the first Asian American man to appear for the United States in a World Cup. He has played 11 seasons in the MLS and is an MLS Cup winner with LAFC. Kellyn currently is a member of Chicago Fire FC. It was a wild weekend the field in MLS with some big comebacks and masssive bounce back wins. But those don't even make the headlines! One of the greatest attacking players in history wants to move to MLS and the news has broken that Inter Miami holds KDB's Discovery Rights. On top of that the first place Vancouver Whitecaps who have already announced their intention to sell the club and now they have made serious moves on building a new soccer specific stadium. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Peter Vermes, one of the longest serving managers in the world, is out after a mutual decision in Kansas City. SKC has not won in their last 13 matches in all competitions, dating back to last September and it has been time for a change. But, Vermes deserved every opportunity and probably and extra chance or two to fix things because of all that he has meant to Kansas City and to the game in this country on the whole. He ultimately couldn't do it and a change was needed, but none of that tarnishes Vermes' legend. He won MLS Cup as a player and coach in Kansas City, won 3 Open Cups as a coach, is 3rd all-time in wins in MLS, and has coached the most games in league history. Beyond all that, as Andrew Wiebe and Aly Trost Martin and many others shared yesterday, he is just an all-around quality person. We'll see what's next for Vermes in the game, and we'll see if Kerry Zavagnin gets the opportunity to replace him in the long-term, he's the interim manager for now.Concacaf Champions Cup gets started again tonight with the quarterfinals. At least one MLS team will be in the semifinals as Miami travels to LAFC tomorrow night to start their series. The LA Galaxy are facing Tigres and Vancouver is playing Pumas. As Niko Moreno has told us on SDH AM (his Thursday 10:30am appearances are always a must for MLS fans), the Seattle Sounders made it official yesterday in signing English winger Ryan Kent.Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2nd round starts tonight with four matches. The highlight of the round will be in the Scenic City tomorrow night as Finley Stadium will see Chattanooga FC host the Chattanooga Red Wolves for the first time ever. The North Stand has been opened for the match and over 6,000 tickets have been distributed as of Sunday for the big event. The US U17's women's national team got qualifying for the World Cup started on the right foot with a 3-0 win in Trinidad and Tobago last night.Sheffield Wednesday have failed to pay their players for March due to "cashflow problems". This isn't the first time there have been financial issues for the current chairman for the Owls. Lyon is also in financial peril with auditors saying there is "significant uncertainty" over their continued existence. Debt has climbed almost 100 million Euros in the past year and an upcoming IPO and new shareholder financing might be vital to keeping things afloat for John Textor and Eagle Football Group. Premier League, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France, Coppa Italia, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, US Open Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup games all on the docket for today. Atlanta Soccer Tonight will be live on 92.9 The Game after Hawks basketball tonight, starting around 10:30pm. More Espresso coming Thursday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

The LA Galaxy find themselves on the road again this weekend, as they travel to Minnesota to face adverse weather and stiff opposition in Loons on March 22, 2025, as they look for their first MLS win and their first three points of the campaign. They'll face a motivated and scrappy Minnesota United side, who will be eager to get revenge for last year's MLS Cup playoff elimination and will be hoping to erase a sour 3-3 draw away from recent memory in which they blew a three-goal lead. The Galaxy has a good chance to get that first victory and ruin the host's day, as the loons have several key absences missing through international duty. With the conditions favorable for LA, can they take advantage of a depleted MNUFC team and get their first win of the MLS season on Saturday?
The LA Galaxy picked up their first point of the season with a spirited 1-1 away draw against the Portland Timbers on Sunday, March 16. The MLS Cup champions continued their improved play in the road draw, with the side that defeated Herediano midweek called back into action against the Timbers. And they once again showed why they ran out overwhelming winners in the Champions Cup, with several energetic and solid performances leading the way for the Galaxy to get a result in a place that hasn't been kind to LA. With two straight, improved performances under their belt, how close is this team to the LA Galaxy team that won the champs their sixth star and do they have another level to give before they match those title-winning heights? Special Guest Justin Ruderman
The Los Angeles Galaxy picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday, March 12 with a dominant 4-1 win over Costa Rican Champion Herediano in the second leg of the Champions Cup at Dignity Health Sports Park to advance from the Round of 16 and earn a date with Tigres in the quarterfinals. The MLS Cup champion finally woke from their slumber with an improved performance led by the players pressed into service due to the injuries LA has sustained. And they took their opportunities with both hands, as they were the catalyst for a complete performance that Greg Vanney will be hoping is the turn-around moment in the season. With a motivating win under their belt, important players ready to come back from injury and contribute the squad, and the heaviest part of March's congested fixture period mostly over, will the LA Galaxy be able to turn around their season from a less-than-ideal start when they visit the road against Portland over the weekend?
Herc had a candid chat with Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, talking through his soccer journey from amateur football to winning the MLS Cup with the Crew. Plus, Herc shares his thoughts on the debate that positions Antonee Robinson as one of the best left-backs in the world.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

fWotD Episode 2868: 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 12 March 2025 is 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season. The 2020 season was Seattle Sounders FC's twelfth season in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of professional club soccer in the United States. It was the 37th season played by a professional team bearing the Sounders name, which had originated in 1974 with the first incarnation of the franchise. The team was under the management of Brian Schmetzer in his fourth full MLS season as head coach of the Sounders.Seattle were the reigning MLS Cup champions, having defeated Toronto FC 3–1 in the 2019 final at their home stadium, CenturyLink Field (renamed Lumen Field in November 2020). The season began with two home matches but was suspended on March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the second Sounders match had reduced attendance due to the pandemic's spread in the Seattle metropolitan area. MLS resumed with a special tournament in July hosted in the Orlando area, and teams returned home a month later to play in matches behind closed doors. The Sounders only played 22 regular season matches, mostly against opponents in the Western Conference, due to a shortened schedule and several canceled matches. The 2020 Campeones Cup was canceled along with the 2020 U. S. Open Cup.Seattle qualified for the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs as the second-placed team in the Western Conference, determined by points per game due to the unbalanced number of games played by MLS teams during the season. The Sounders defeated Los Angeles FC, FC Dallas, and Minnesota United FC at home to win a second consecutive conference championship and qualify for MLS Cup 2020, where they lost 3–0 to Columbus Crew SC.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:46 UTC on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

The new MLS season is upon us! Expectations for FC Cincinnati are higher than ever before, but every journey starts with a single step. The biggest hurdle may be to bust the ghosts from the past season—the Orange & Blue lost both matchups against the eventual 2024 MLS Cup finalists, the New York Red Bulls. Head coach Sandro Schwarz has retooled by exchanging youth for European experience with some big names incorporated into the roster over the past few years. Will that be the key to get New York their next bit of silverware? Will FCC rediscover the key to beating the Bulls? We sit down with Daniel from Area Sports Network to see if we can learn anything from the past year and if the Red Bulls' staunch defense from last season is penetrable. (Maybe even ask who the next villain could be in the rivalry?) Tune in and trade threads with us! #MLS #FCCincinnati #soccer Become a Patron! Special thanks to this month's new Patreon signups. Hello Rank Squad! It's nearly time for kick-off in MLS' 30th season, so we thought it was the right time to sit down and take a look at how things are shaping up ahead of a landmark campaign. We start with Dean's new hometown club of San Diego FC, examining how the 30th franchise in the league are looking ahead of their maiden voyage in the Western Conference; before moving things on to the contenders to challenge for the Supporters' Shield, and, later on, MLS Cup. We examine reigning champions LA Galaxy, their crosstown rivals Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders in the West, with a word to the San Jose Earthquakes; before heading over East to take a peek at Supporters' Shield holders Inter Miami, big-spending Atlanta United, a new era at FC Cincinnati, and the Dean Smith evolutions at Charlotte FC. Finally, we move onto the individual players and new signings who could make all the difference, from 2024 MVP Lionel Messi, through the fresh strikers of Emmanuel Latte Lath and Kevin Denkey, Wilfried Zaha at Charlotte, the returning Miguel Almiron, a big intra-league transfer in Evander, and many more. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
