It was hard to tell who was more tired, LAFC after playing their 5th match in 15 days, or the Defenders, fresh from celebrating Scarf's 40th birthday. But the show must go on, both for our beloved Black and Gold, and for THE most LAFC podcast on Earth, Defenders of the Banc! Episode 237 relives the riveting 0-0 draw in Seattle, complete with yellow cards, substitutions, and one nice save from Stefan Frei. We looked tired, but keeping a high-powered Seattle squad off the scoresheet is no small feat. The defense looked great, and the offense was almost good enough to steal all 3 at Lumen. Also on this episode, Filly apologies to an entire city while Scarf gets some birthday love from Giorgio Chiellini! A huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of Scarf's 40th. It really does feel like millions!
After a masterful showing in Costa Rica, and fresh off another master class against New England, the boys in Black and Gold take on Alajuelense yet again for their 4th match in 12 days, this time at the friendly confines of BMO. We cover both CCL matches here on Episode 236!Winning the first leg comfortably, 3-0, and on the road, no less, meant that all LAFC had to do was avoid an epic collapse at home to move on to the quarterfinals of the 2023 CCL tournament. So what does LAFC decide to do? Make all of the millions (and millions!) sweat, of course. After giving up early goals in both halves, LAFC waited until the 83rd minute to put things on ice. Carlos Vela, El Rey himself, found himself 1v1 with the incredibly capable Costa Rican keeper Leonel Moreira. Unlike most of this match, there was nothing Moreira could do to keep the sheet clean, and Carlos's goal propels LAFC to a date (actually, two!) with the Tristan Blackmon and the Vancouver Whitecaps in April. We've got (at least) two more CCL games on the docket this season! We know this one is a little long, but also on this episode, Filly details his German ancestry as LAFC inks a deal with German giants Bayern Munich, Scarf regales us with tales of his trip down river in Costa Rica, and the boys get set for their 4th podcast in a week and a half! There's nothing like March Madness, in both the NCAA and MLS!
Didn't we just do this? (Yes!) And aren't we doing this again very soon? (Also yes!) It's a gauntlet of 5 matches in 15 days, and LAFC's beatdown of the Revolution means we are over the hump! It's Episode 235, the one where we welcome back club legend Latif Blessing!LAFC, fresh off their international spanking of Costa Rica's Alajuelense, head back to BMO for our third-ever showdown against Bruce Arena and the NE Revolution. Spoiler alert: It did not go well for Bruce's Boys. An early PK converted by Denis Bouanga (one of two for him), and goals by Timothy Tillman and Stipe Biuk capped off the 4-0 win for the Black and Gold. News wasn't all good, however, as Ryan Hollingshead left the match with a potentially serious upper-body injury in the 83'. We will wait and see what his status is for the coming weeks. We will cover both legs of the first round CCL tilt with Alajuelense on the next episode, but, for now, a very tired duo of Filly and Scarf breaking down New England will have to do! Enjoy the episode!
It's Opening Day for LAFC in 2023, and with that comes rings, banners, an incredible tifo, and, like the previous 5 seasons, 3 points! Here on Episode 234, listen to Filly and Scarf break down the win over Portland. Better yet, for the first time, head on over to YouTube, and you can now WATCH the Defenders do their thing! Before the match, all the pomp and circumstance that comes with winning your first MLS Cup was definitely present. All three pieces of hardware were there, with a matching banner for each. Maxime Crepeau and Gareth Bale brought out the Cup while all the players received their rings. Olly, Will Ferrell, and Aaron Donald were all at newly christened BMO Stadium. It was like the first day of school and graduation day all rolled into one! LAFC roared out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Carlos Vela, Mahala Opoku, and… GIORGIO CHIELLINI?!? Yes, the man who scored his first professional goal before Erik Duenas or Tony Leone was even born opens his LAFC ledger with our first goal of 2023! Scarf nearly died. Also on this episode, watch as the boys figure out which way to look as they try to look as natural as they can on video. We've got news about Chicho Arango, Mohamed Traore, and Adrien Perez as we look back at the first match in club history. With 4 more matches in 15 days, there's definitely going to be a lot of content coming in a short amount of time, so enjoy 234 while you can!

It's Episode 228, and there is PLENTY to talk about! The boys are back in Burbank, and we are beyond excited for the 2023 Preseason to get underway! In this episode, JT and Larry are back, Gareth Bale and Sebas Mendez are gone, and the rumors for Chicho and Mahala are in full effect. Houston has a problem on their backline, LAFC needs a midfielder (or three), and ADAMA DIOMANDE is back in MLS (and with Bob!). Also on this episode, Nathan Ordaz turns 19, Max Bretos gets a bite at the Apple, and LAFC pays out several investors, including Filly's favorite, Tony Robbins. Defenders, we hope to see you all out in Coachella, especially for the Toronto match and the return of Dio! Until then, we'll get our stuff together for Episode 229!
Defenders! The boys are indeed back in town! LAFC has returned to the Performance Center, and Filly and Scarf are BACK in World Famous Filimonster Studios! On this episode, we chat about all the transactions in the 2023 off-season so far. Latif is gone, and Scarf is crushed. Filly may have less representation from the five boroughs at the Banc if the Will Kuntz rumors are true. Ryan Hollingshead and the most Black and Gold mustache of all time are back! Aaron Long has entered the building! And unlike last year, LAFC actually selects a few guys in the MLS SuperDraft. It's a busy offseason, and we are well underway! We remember Pelé, we celebrate Messi, and we look at all things LAFC in Qatar. We also take a look at the schedule, including St. Louis entering the fray, away days at Nashville, Charlotte, and Austin, and a game against New England that, all of a sudden, means much, much more in March. We are so happy to be back, and we can't wait for the season to kick off in just 49 days! So much more to come in the next few weeks, so stay tuned, Defenders!

On a very special and very different episode of Defenders of the Banc, we partner with LAFC and the good people at Santa Monica Brew Works for an incredibly entertaining watch party for the USMNT's maiden voyage in the 2022 World Cup, their match against Gareth Bale and Wales. Listen along with the Defenders as we watch the 1-1 draw between the United States and Wales. We bring on a TON of guests, including Rich Orosco, Jimmy and Cassie Lopez, Tony from Heart of LAFC, Len Lanzi, Chris Lafferty, George Salameh, two incredibly well-spoken middle schoolers, Luca and Sebastian, and two guys who played soccer with Haji Wright at Culver City Middle School! It's an absolute blast!Again, a HUGE thank you to LAFC for asking us to be a part of this special day, to Santa Monica Brew Works for being a wonderful host, and to our sponsor, FLEX, for being there every step of the way!

LAFC has won MLS Cup! LAFC has won MLS Cup!!! After a match now considered the best final in MLS history, and the most intense emotional roller coaster in a 5-year history of intense emotional rollercoasters, LAFC has won MLS Cup!The matchup was #1 in the West, LAFC, against #1 in the East, the Philadelphia Union, for the first time in an MLS Final since 2003, and it lived up to every bit of the hype and billing. The two best teams produced an all-time great match, filled with improbable moments, incredible performances, and a storybook ending that Hollywood couldn't begin to script. Say it with us one more time: LAFC has won MLS Cup!LAFC drew first blood, as Kellyn Acosta bent a free kick off of midfielder Jack McGlynn's head and past Andre Blake for an early 1-0 lead. Philadelphia equalized just before the hour mark off a great feed from Jose Martinez to Daniel Gazdag, and the drama had just begun. LAFC looked to have won it off a bit of set magic in the 83rd minute. Carlos Vela found Jesus David Murillo with a beautiful corner kick, and LAFC looked to be on their way to glory! But just 2 minutes later, Jack Elliott found a header of his own off a set piece to level the match at 2 and send us into Extra Time. Seven minutes into the first 15-minute period, Carlos Vela came off for Gareth Bale. Yes, Bale, the Welsh superstar who had played just 176 Black and Gold minutes since September, would be asked to replace the Captain. The first 15 minutes came and went without much fanfare, but, as Samuel L. Jackson said in Jurassic Park, "Hold on to your butts."After a horrific injury to Maxime Crepeau on a play that likely saved a sure Union goal and resulted in a straight red for Crepeau, the former Union product John McCarthy entered the match in the 117th minute of the MLS Cup Final. Because of the injury, we would see 9 full minutes of stoppage time. Four minutes in, McCarthy would make one fantastic save on Julian Carranza, but the ensuing rebound would be put home by Elliott for his second goal of the match, and one that surely looked to be a Cup winner.LAFC, Chiqui Palacios, and Gareth Bale had other ideas, however. After a 1-2 between Ilie and Chiqui, Palacios raced to the goal line, flicked a beautiful cross into the box towards a streaking Bale, who got perfect position on the 6'6" Elliott and headed it home for a 127th-minute equalizer!!! LAFC had found a way to get it to PK's! On paper, it looked to be David vs. Goliath, as McCarthy, the MLS journeyman, would take on the reigning MLS Keeper of the Year in Andre Blake. But the match is never played on paper; this is Latitude 36 Bermudagrass, and this is the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, Banc of California Stadium. After a miss by Glesnes, McCarthy stoned both Jose Martinez AND Kai Wagner, and with Ilie Sanchez's successful attempt, LAFC would win the shootout, 3-0, and take home our first MLS Cup. One more time, with feeling: LAFC has won MLS Cup!

After 5 years, filled with near misses, heartbreaks, and some major disappointments, LAFC will finally get their first crack at MLS Cup! It's Episode 223, and we have to pinch ourselves on this one. LAFC is on to the FINAL! In a complete and utter decimation at the Banc, LAFC took Austin behind the woodshed for a 3-0 (or was it 4?) beating en route to the Western Conference crown! Goals by Chicho, Mahala, and a lovely gift from Austin's Maxi Urruti provided the offense while a complete team effort on defense secured our first clean sheet in postseason history. LAFC secures their third piece of hardware and the first that can sit permanently in the trophy case, the Western Conference Championship. The boys in Black and Gold now await the Philadelphia Union, in many ways our equal in the East. Also on 223, Filly 3:16 makes an appearance, apparently, Moussa Djitte is a house, The 3252 kill it yet again with their incredible tifo skills, and who knew Jamie Camil can crush the national anthem? It's a week of nerves, little sleep, and, hopefully, in the end, an incredible celebration as we await a home-cooked MLS Cup Final, but tonight... we celebrate!
It's Episode 222, and it's our Western Conference Final preview episode. LAFC readies itself to take on Austin FC, and the road to MLS Cup continues to run through the Banc. LAFC has knocked Carson out of the playoffs (again) behind a spectacular performance by #99 (again), and you can hear all about it here on Episode 221! Though we still have two more wins to go, tonight we celebrate LAFC's 3-2 triumph over the Galaxy!Somehow, after 17 matches in the Clasico Angelino, this rivalry still gives us magic every. single. time! LAFC went up early, something we thought we must do in order to win, behind a beautiful ball from Carlos Vela and an even better box out by Denis Bouanga to create enough space to finish. Right before the half, Samuel Grandsir draws the visitors back level with a strike from relative distance off a bad clearance. Both sides escape to the locker rooms level at 1. And the fireworks had just begun! With Captain Carlos coming off after about 75 minutes for Mahala, nervous time had clearly started. But this season's Ghanian game changer made a beautiful run into the box as Ryan Hollingshead's cross came through. Upon getting a small touch on it, the ball found Denis on the back post, and just like that, it's a brace for Bouanga! All LAFC had to do was hold on. Oops.Super sub Dejan Joveljic's rocket in the 84' drew us back level, but the man who has been our most consistent scorer for the last two seasons, Chicho Arango, would pull a rabbit out of a hat in stoppage! After a perfect Kellyn corner, the ball pinballed to Chicho's feet, and he simply doesn't miss from there! The Banc erupts, LAFC wins, 3-2, and we are back in the Western Conference Final! Also on this episode, Filly gets the hiccups while his cats run amok, Scarf looks after a player's child (?), and we send some lovely parting shots Raheem Edwards' way. Until 222, enjoy 221!

Episode 220 is a rare preview pod from the Defenders. The stage is set: LAFC. Carson. Winner plays for the West. And we wouldn't want it any other way!On this pod, we talk all things... Carson. Yup, you read that right. We deliberate and dissect almost every aspect of the team from just 13 miles down the road in preparation for our playoff tilt at the Banc, from players to watch, depth at each line, and everything in-between. We obviously talk a ton of LAFC, too, including who our "X" factor might be, how the "new guys" are fitting in, and what we need to do in order to come away with the W. Yes, it's nervous time around these parts, but we wouldn't want our path to the Cup to include anyone else at this stage of the journey. Bring on Carson! Also on this episode, we talk salaries, La Masia, and, for a very short amount of time, Brian Rodriguez. Scarf just can't quit him... We hope you enjoy this special episode, we'd love to know what you think of the matchup, and, most importantly, we hope to celebrate with you all on Episode 221!

You wanted it. You got it! At least some of you did - we all know how Vince feels about it. But luckily the soccer gods don't care about Vince's feelings and we've got ourselves a derby in the second round of the 2022 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. LAFC will host the Galaxy on Thursday at Banc. Max and Vince aren't going to waste any time this week, they dive right into the playoffs with nearly an hour of talk about LAFC versus Galaxy. We've got midfield talk. Vince breaks down Puig vs Cifu. Max talks about the chess match between Steve Cherundolo and Greg Vanney. Oh, and did we mention there's Carlos Vela and Chicharito squaring off in a winner-takes-all match?! There are so many angles to approach this match from. If you weren't already, this podcast will get you pumped. And if you're already there, it'll give you all the fine details you crave.
Y el 'palomazo' de Carlos Vela en concierto de Christian Nodal
It's Episode 219, and the Supporters Shield is home! Yes, we played Nashville, and sure, we lost, but that result was but an afterthought to the all-day celebration at the Banc as the Shield came home.LAFC actually played a great game, as they generated 29 shots and 14 on target, but Joe Willis had ideas to spoil our celebration for at least a few hours. Save after save by Willis and a back post, set-piece header by Teal Bunbury allowed Nashville to come away with a 1-0 win and a good view of the party that resumed right after as the Shield took center pitch. Thoughts of Mo, the success of 2019, and a world pre-pandemic couldn't help but flood our minds as the Shield was brought to center pitch by KC and Sujin. LAFC now has 11 days off (at least) as we wait for the winner of Carson vs. Nashville. You'll hear all about that on Episode 220, but until then, enjoy 219, and enjoy the celebration!
It's Episode 218, and it's a celebration!!! Thanks to Denis Bouanga, Carlos Vela, and our fearless leader, Steve Cherundolo, the Supporters Shield is coming back to the Banc! All LAFC had to do was head to a house of horrors, Providence Park, and win for the first time in 12 matches on turf and beat Portland for the first time in 7 matches. The first half was everything you've come to know and love from an LAFC/Timbers tilt: physical, frustrating, and plenty of quality crosses by Portland. A scoreless first half gave way to a much more frenetic second. Vintage Carlos Vela would make an appearance, scoring an incredible left-footed strike from the top of the box to put LAFC up one. A header from Asprilla off another Portland cross in the 81st minute would be the equalizer, and the Shield hopes looked like they might have to wait until Decision Day. Until...It looked like LAFC would have a sure penalty kick, especially after Ismail Elfath took a day and a half with VAR. Alas, it was merely ruled a corner, and LAFC would need some stoppage time magic. Enter Denis Bouanga. #99 knifed his way into the box, fought through two defenders, and somehow still had enough on it to slot it past Ivacic for a 95th minute stoppage time, Supporters Shield winner! Bouanga's first goal in Black and Gold is a history maker!Next week, LAFC closes out their 2022 regular season with a party at the Banc, which will also include a match against Walker Zimmerman and Nashville. The Shield is coming back home, and you can join the party with us on Episode 219!
Revenge is a dish best served at the Banc, and LAFC was able to enact some on Houston with a 3-1 beating behind a pair of PK's from the Captain. The three points were huge, as LAFC now wrestles back control of their Supporters Shield destiny from Philadelphia. A Corey Baird 25th minute goal was sandwiched between two Carlos Vela penalty kick finishes, and LAFC headed to the half up 2-1. Our secret weapon, Ryan Hollingshead, added to his defender-leading goal tally just after halftime, and that was all LAFC would need. 3-1 to the good guys! Also on Episode 217, a glass of Scotch accompanies a rant or two by Filly, Scarf sells a bunch of LAFC cards, and the Black and Gold are, again, Champions League bound! We'll take a short international break along with MLS, and you should do the same until 218!
This is a very special episode of the podcast. Normally, Max and Vince take some time to think before sharing their thoughts on the most recent LAFC performance. But this time, it couldn't wait. The guys get right into the 1-1 draw in Minnesota. Let's face it. It's been a rough six matches for LAFC. The team has dealt with all kinds of adversity and won just once. But Minnesota was different. Yes, they still didn't win. But in light of the circumstances, coming from behind thanks to a Carlos Vela curler in the second half gave us some hope. Max and Vince go through what was an interesting starting lineup that featured a lot of guys in unfamiliar roles and probably something we'll never see again in 2022. The guys break down the play of Gareth Bale, Chicho Arango, Carlos Vela, and Kellyn Acosta. And they get into why this feels miserable but isn't necessarily a time to panic as LAFC returns home to face Houston on Sunday. All that and more on a new episode of Inside LAFC: The Max + Vince podcast.

Luis Suarez needs a new club to prepare for the World Cup, is LAFC the right move? Christian don't think so! Luis Suarez has left Ateltico Madrid and is rumored to be going back to Nacional in Uruguay, his boyhood club. Rumor is he'd be willing to join LAFC but not until after the World Cup. Remember, that's next season for MLS and LAFC. If he joins LAFC, that makes LAFC the favorites to win the league this year, no? Would Gareth Bale stay to play with Luis Suarez? How would he fit in with Gareth Bale, Carlos Vela, and Chiellini who are already there? This could be one memorable LAFC season.
