Can We Just Forget That Last Week Even Happened? Many MLS fans are still trying to figure out how to process a two month long break in the middle of the season. Most NYCFC fans had high expectations for this past week. A chance to advance to the semi-finals of the US Open Cup. A chance to change the narrative that the club never took the competition seriously. Pascal Jansen previously had said himself that the tournament was a great way to win a trophy. But after conceding the lone goal of the match in the 59th minute, NYCFC appeared to clean house and rest players for the next MLS match. If some NYCFC fans were not sure how to feel about the break, the last two matches will make you want to forget about the club for a while. This week Mike Anderer, Mike Allen and J.R. give their best takes on how NYCFC fell so low in such a short amount of time.

After projecting Mauricio Pochettino's World Cup roster in the last, this time Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Marcelo Balboa step into the hot seat themselves. The guys build their strongest possible 26-man USMNT squads for the 2026 World Cup, debating difficult omissions, surprise inclusions, and what the ideal balance looks like for a team hosting the biggest tournament in the sport. Marcelo reflects on the 1994 World Cup squad, sharing stories about how Bora Milutinović transformed a squad filled with free agents and underdogs into a team capable of getting out of the group on home soil. How does this current generation compare to the teams that followed? The crew ranks the best USMNT World Cup squads since 1994 and debates where today's team stacks up historically. Plus, the guys preview the final weekend of action for Americans abroad. And stateside, four teams remain in the hunt for the US Open Cup - who will lift the trophy and claim a place in tournament history? The Title Was Too Easy To Pick It felt like it had been 84 years since NYCFC won an MLS game. But it had only been seven regular season games and the only two victories were in the US Open Cup. Finally NYCFC broke out of their slump against a struggling Columbus Crew to slide back up the Eastern Conference table. This week Christian Smith fills in for J.R. with Mike and Mike as the three talk about Jansen’s coaching styles, the team’s response to the run of poor results and of course the hat trick by Hannes Wolf.
Hey, soccer fans! Do you belive in deja vu? The Chicago Fire's latest match - a loss to FC Cincinnati - sure felt like their prior outing against FCC just much worse. The Men in Red blew two one-goal leads, missed a PK in stoppage time, and conceded the game-winning PK just minutes later. Tune in as Nick vents his frustration with the lack of player execution and coaching failures. He focuses on a concerning trend of player rotation and substitutions from Gregg Berhalter and his staff. They appeared to be rotating players around their US Open Cup match vs. St. Louis City and their match against a bad Sporting Kansas City team, but then make no proactive subs to preserve the wins against Cincinnati in both matches. Join the crew as we breakdown a special 2 games in week! After getting knocked out of the US Open Cup, the Roos pulled out a tough 2-1 win over Union Omaha.
Welcome back to the Bayou City Soccer Podcast! This week, the guys are joined by German Benitez of Foxtrot Media to break down a strong bounce-back stretch for the Houston Dynamo. Houston kicked things off with a win over El Paso Locomotive in the US Open Cup, advancing to the next round, and followed it up with an impressive road result—grabbing all three points against Orlando City in MLS play.Looking ahead, the Dynamo face San Diego FC in a midweek clash that has all the makings of a trap game. While the California side has struggled in its second MLS season, they still boast dangerous attacking pieces like Anders Dreyer who can turn a game in an instant. Then it's on to Saturday, where Houston heads to Q2 Stadium to face Austin FC—a matchup that has historically been a tough one for the Dynamo. To wrap things up, we dive into Dynamo 2's continued unbeaten run and discuss the growing buzz around local youth talent, with several players knocking on the door of making a real impact at the first-team level.-All that and much more in this episode!-We invite you to follow us at Bayou City Soccer!-BayouCitySoccer.net-@BayouCitySoccer on Facebook, IG, and Twitter-Hit us up using our hashtag #AskBCS-Hosts:@rudysegura3 on Twitter@crisputallaz on Twitter-Again, BayouCitySoccer.net for everything!
The boys sat down to recap the match against Toronto FC in the six up in Canada. Austin FC was able to put up 3 goals, but unfortunately also conceded 3 to see this game end in a draw, where both teams took a point. B says it was a great point, while H isn't too happy about dropping the win in the final minutes. What do you think? The boys also went over the USOC defeat to Louisville and how things are gonna look for the club moving forward… Is Nico going to survive this season, or will he be let go? To finish off, the boys had a mini debate about whether the Rodos era has been “better” than Reynas and when Austin FC fans had the most fun supporting the team in club history.
For the Glory KC is back with the 176th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City had what was potentially the lowest moment on the field in club history. At the very least, in recent memory. So, a week after talking about expectations, Sheena and I are trying to align on the state of the team. Fans are rightfully upset with the performances of the week, particularly the showing in the US Open Cup against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.Fans are calling for Raphel Wicky's job, David Lee's job, Peter Mallouk to (already) sell the team, and for the release or purge of almost every player on the roster. What is rational and what is irrational? We try to break it all down.Plus, we weave through the moments in the USOC game as well as the loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night. We knew this season would start slow and have some lows, but I'm not sure anyone thought it would be quite this low. We also talk about quite the remarkable stat when it comes to losing and SKC in recent seasons and where it sits in history. Outside of the events on the field, there were also a couple notable moments off the field. Cavan Sullivan was apparently inquired about by Lee and Alan Pulido is out at Chivas. The KC Current lifted up the week with their Teal Rising Cup win last weekend over Palmeiras, but that feels like an eternity ago. We briefly relive that game, and I talk about Haley Hopkins ascent up the roster and perhaps into the starting lineup in an NWSL game.In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:World Cup Fan Fest Lineup, Parking and BusesUSWNT resultsNWSL calendar flip -- Fall to Spring?Javier Mascherano out in MiamiHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro & World Cup Trophy - 0:00Sporting KC - 6:30KC Current - 1:08:08Digital Crawl - 1:14:04Upcoming GamesKC Current @ Washington Spirit, FRI, April 24th at 7:00PM CSTSporting KC @ Chicago Fire, SAT, April 25th at 7:30PMSKC II vs. Houston Dynamo 2, SUN, April 26th at 7:00PMAs a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. This week's episode hits on all the big stories in American soccer. Thomas Pinzone from The Blazing Musket podcast sits in as co-host to help Jason cover the game from post to post. We start with Matt Crocker's sudden departure as sporting director from US Soccer. Did Crocker make any headway on the big problems facing the game in the US? How will we judge his tenure? Then Jason and Thomas discuss Javier Mascherano quitting on Inter Miami seven games into a title defense season. Was there drama behind the scences? MLS went two-and-two in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Mexican opposition. The guys get into the problems MLS faces in the CCC and the wide issues with a tournament that only two leagues can win. There's round-up of the US Open Cup action from this week with a special note for the cupsets sprung by lower division teams and some love for the SOCCER HERITAGE moments like the plethora of lines on the surface in Mount Vernon, NY for Westchester SC's match against NYCFC. Finally, Jason springs on Thomas the story of the Fernando Mendoza photo shoot that has an eerie similarity to a photo shoot featuring the 2002 USMNT. Photogs apparently can't say not to an athlete sipping from a water fountain. Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire - the winningest MLS team in US Open Cup history - advanced to the Round of 16 after a 2-1 victory over Detroit City FC. The Men in Red dominated the first half, and Jason Shokalook scored a brace in his first start for the Fire first team. However, a DCFC goal, a red card to Puso Dithejane, and a freight train all in the span of five minutes propelled the USL Championship side to nearly equalizing. In what was a chaotic second half, the Fire survive and advance to take on St. Louis City SC in the next round. Nick also previews the upcoming match against FC Cincinatti. He predicts a draw, but notes that both teams have lots of roster questions due to injuries and the defenses may be prone to lapses. Cincy will also be without key player Kevin Denkey, who will be serving a red card suspension. Can the Fire take advantage and extend their win streak to four matches? Hey, soccer fans! Nick is back recapping the Chicago Fire's 1-0 victory over Atlanta United. The Five Stripes couldn't find the back of the net due to the outstanding defensive performances by Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Jack Elliott. Despite their pressue and opportunities, the Men in Red scored once thanks to Maren Haile-Selassie, filling in at striker for the injured Hugo Cuypers. The Fire are grinding out wins and ride a three-game win streak into their next match-ups: a US Open Cup game against Detroit City FC and a regular season game against FC Cincinnati. Can they keep the momentum going? Nick also talks about updates from around MLS, including CF Montreal firing their coach, Philadelphia Union getting their first win, and Columbus Crew star Wasem Abou Ali tearing his ACL. For the Glory KC is back with the 175th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City have climbed to a three-game losing streak after their 3-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night. And that's after being up 1-0 early in the game off of Jacob Bartlett's first career goal. The joy on his face of scoring was quickly replaced with disappointed looks as Sporting were on the back foot for much of the last 15+ minutes of the half before finally conceding. But really, what should Sporting KC and their fans expect from this team?Sheena and I debate all the reasons things may be the way they are. From roster building to youthful inexperience and down to specific players and of course coaching and the front office. We also get into a few other SKC related stories, including Zorhan Bassong's new/old injury, Matt Besler and Cliff Illig being honored (and a Heart and Goal Podcast side conversation), SKC Academy news and the announcement of the "Soccer Capital Summer" watch parties at Sporting Park. Plus, I make the case Sporting KC should go for it with the US Open Cup on Tuesday. The KC Current are on an extended international break, but that just means it's Teal Rising Week. The Current attempted to defend the Teal Rising Cup with a victory over Corinthians to earn a spot in the finals.
